A gaming mouse that is not detected or keeps disconnecting is usually recoverable without replacing it. Start by identifying whether it is wired USB, uses a USB wireless receiver, or connects over Bluetooth, then check power and the physical connection before changing drivers or buying hardware. A different USB port, a direct connection that bypasses a hub, a receiver reset, or a fresh Bluetooth pairing often isolates the cause.

This guide covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so driver and firmware availability may now depend on your PC manufacturer. The exact reset, pairing, firmware, and replacement-receiver procedure remains specific to the mouse model.

First, identify how the mouse connects

The correct fix depends on the connection path. A wired mouse has a cable and USB plug; a 2.4 GHz wireless mouse has a small USB receiver; a Bluetooth mouse pairs directly with the computer and may not include a receiver.

Connection type Common symptoms Start here
Wired USB No lights, cursor stops, Windows repeatedly connects and disconnects Check cable and power, then try another USB port without a hub
USB wireless receiver Mouse works intermittently, receiver is not recognized, cursor freezes at a distance Charge or replace batteries, reconnect the receiver, then test another port
Bluetooth Mouse is listed but will not pair, disappears, or drops after a period of use Check Bluetooth, charge, range, pairing mode, power management, and adapter drivers

If you are unsure, look at the mouse and its accessories before changing Windows settings. A removable USB dongle indicates a receiver model. A mouse that appears in Windows under Bluetooth and devices is using Bluetooth, although some receiver models can also support Bluetooth.

Work through the safe checks first

1. Confirm power, cable condition, and the sensor

  1. Turn the mouse on if it has a physical switch. Look for an indicator light or other sign that it is receiving power.
  2. For a rechargeable mouse, charge it with the supplied or known-good cable. For a battery-powered mouse, reseat the batteries or install fresh ones in the correct orientation.
  3. Inspect the cable, plug, and strain relief for cuts, kinks, bent contacts, or a loose connection. A cable that works only when held at one angle is a hardware warning, not a Windows setting.
  4. Turn the mouse over and clear dirt from the optical sensor. A blocked sensor can look like a connection failure because the pointer does not move even though the device is powered.

If there are no lights and no response on any computer, continue to the cross-test section before spending time on software. A battery, cable, switch, or internal electronics fault is more likely than a driver problem in that situation.

2. Restart the connection

For a wired mouse, unplug it, wait briefly for Windows to unload the device, and plug it back in firmly. For a receiver model, unplug the receiver, wait about 10 seconds, and plug it into the USB port again. Microsoft describes this as a basic reset for USB wireless devices. Turn the mouse off and on as well if it has a power switch.

Fix a wired USB gaming mouse

Try another USB port

  1. Unplug the mouse.
  2. Connect it directly to a different USB port on the computer.
  3. Wait for Windows to announce or otherwise register the device, then move the pointer.

A port on the other side of a desktop or a different port on a laptop helps distinguish a bad connector from a mouse fault. Do not use an adapter while testing if you can avoid it.

Bypass the USB hub

If the mouse is connected through a monitor, keyboard, docking station, or unpowered hub, remove that device from the path and connect the mouse directly to the PC. If the hub has its own power supply, verify that it is switched on and firmly connected. A direct connection that works while the hub connection fails points to the hub, its cable, or its power—not necessarily the mouse.

Interpret intermittent USB behavior

  • Works in one port only: the unused port or its host controller may be the problem. Keep testing other peripherals in that port and install PC-manufacturer updates if several devices fail there.
  • Disconnects when the cable moves: stop bending the cable and test another cable only if the mouse uses a detachable, model-compatible cable. Do not assume every USB cable supports the mouse’s data connection.
  • Fails through a hub but works directly: leave it directly connected for gaming or replace the hub with a powered, compatible one.
  • Never powers on: check the switch, cable, batteries, and another PC before treating it as a driver issue.

Reset a USB wireless receiver

Reconnect the receiver

  1. Turn the mouse off if its design allows it.
  2. Remove the USB wireless receiver from the computer.
  3. Wait approximately 10 seconds.
  4. Insert the receiver directly into another USB port, avoiding a hub during the test.
  5. Turn the mouse on and wait for it to reconnect.

Keep the receiver reasonably close to the mouse while testing. A desktop receiver hidden behind a case or display can have a less reliable radio path than one placed where the manufacturer intended.

Use only model-specific pairing and reset instructions

Some mice have a reset or pairing button on the underside; some receivers have one; others require a manufacturer utility. Do not guess a button sequence or install a receiver from another model. Receiver compatibility, re-pairing steps, and firmware tools vary by make and model. Use the mouse maker’s support instructions for those actions.

Separate receiver failure from computer failure

Test the receiver in another direct USB port on the same PC. If possible, connect the complete mouse-and-receiver set to another PC and install any required driver supplied for that model. If it works on the second PC, investigate the original computer’s USB ports, hub, drivers, or power behavior. If it fails there too, the mouse or receiver itself is the stronger suspect.

Fix Bluetooth pairing and repeated drops

Check the basic Bluetooth conditions

  1. Open Windows Settings and verify Bluetooth is on. In Windows 11, use Settings > Bluetooth & devices. In Windows 10, use Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
  2. Charge the mouse or install fresh batteries.
  3. Place the mouse within normal operating range of the PC and remove obvious obstructions while testing.
  4. Put the mouse into its pairing mode using the model’s documented control.

If Bluetooth is missing, grayed out, or cannot be switched on, the issue may involve the Bluetooth adapter, its driver, or firmware rather than the mouse. Check the computer manufacturer’s support page for updates and model-specific guidance.

Remove and add the mouse again

If Windows lists the mouse but will not connect, remove the existing entry and pair it again. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, find the mouse, open its menu, and choose the remove option. In Windows 10, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices, select the mouse, choose Remove device, and confirm. Then choose Add device, select Bluetooth, put the mouse in pairing mode, and select it when it appears.

Removing a device erases its current Windows pairing record; it does not repair a dead battery or a hardware fault. If the mouse does not reappear during the add-device step, check power, pairing mode, range, and the PC’s Bluetooth adapter.

Stop power management from causing drops

Repeated disconnects after the mouse sits idle can be related to adapter power saving. Open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, open the properties for the Bluetooth adapter, and inspect the Power Management tab if it is available. If Windows offers an option allowing the computer to turn off the device to save power, clear it, apply the change, and restart the PC. The exact tabs and wording can differ by adapter driver; if the tab is absent, do not substitute a random setting.

Restart Bluetooth Support Service

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Bluetooth Support Service.
  3. Right-click it and choose Restart. If it is stopped, choose Start.
  4. Try the mouse again after Windows finishes restarting the service.

Changing the service can affect other Bluetooth devices temporarily. If the service will not start, focus on the adapter, driver, and PC-manufacturer support rather than repeatedly pairing the mouse.

Update the Bluetooth adapter driver

Use Device Manager > Bluetooth, right-click the adapter, and choose the driver-update option available on your Windows version. Prefer the driver or firmware package provided by the computer manufacturer when one exists, because the adapter may be customized for that PC. Restart Windows after an installation and pair the mouse again if necessary.

Check for USB 3.0 interference

Microsoft notes that an unshielded USB device connected to a USB 3.0 port can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth radio communication. This is relevant when the mouse pairs successfully but becomes unstable only near a particular drive, hub, or cable.

  1. Move the Bluetooth mouse, its charging cable, or a nearby unshielded USB device away from the USB 3.0 port and its cable.
  2. Temporarily disconnect nearby USB devices that are not needed.
  3. Retest the mouse in the same room and at the same distance.

If the drops stop, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the source. This does not prove that the mouse is defective; it indicates a radio-environment problem that can often be solved by repositioning equipment.

Use drivers and firmware carefully

A driver can matter when Windows cannot enumerate a USB device, Bluetooth controls are unavailable, or the mouse behaves differently after an update. It is not a reason to install an unverified “driver fixer” or a firmware file for a similar-looking model.

  • Use the PC manufacturer’s support instructions for Bluetooth adapter drivers and firmware issues.

If a firmware tool reports that no device is present, return to the physical and cross-test steps. A tool cannot update a mouse that Windows cannot see at the required connection stage.

Cross-test the mouse before replacing it

Testing the complete setup on another computer is the most useful replacement check in Microsoft’s general Windows guidance. Use the same mouse, cable or receiver, and batteries where practical, but install the model’s required driver on the second PC if the manufacturer specifies one.

Result on another PC Most likely area Next action
Works normally Original PC’s USB port, hub, Bluetooth adapter, power setting, driver, or firmware Keep the mouse connected to the working path, then troubleshoot the original host one component at a time
Fails in the same way Mouse, cable, batteries, or wireless receiver Check model-specific repair, receiver, and warranty options; replacement may be necessary
Works only with a different cable or receiver The removed cable or receiver Confirm the replacement part is explicitly compatible with the exact model
Works only after a model utility is installed Required driver or configuration software Keep the supported version and avoid generic utilities

When a device does not work at all—no lights when plugged in, no cursor movement, and no appearance on screen—Microsoft advises connecting it to another PC to verify whether the device works there. If it still fails, replacement may be needed.

Choose the right replacement, if the mouse has failed

Replace the mouse only after the cross-test points to the mouse, cable, or receiver. A new mouse will not repair a faulty computer USB port, a failing host Bluetooth adapter, a damaged hub, an outdated host driver, or an incorrectly paired receiver.

Before buying, compare the following with your actual computer and use case:

  • Connection type: wired USB, USB receiver, or Bluetooth.
  • Operating-system support: confirm Windows 11 or Windows 10 compatibility as applicable.
  • Receiver details: verify that a receiver is included and that any replacement receiver is compatible with the exact model.
  • Power arrangement: rechargeable battery, replaceable batteries, or cable-only operation.
  • Support and warranty: check the manufacturer’s current terms for your region and purchase date; terms were not established here.

If only the receiver failed, a model-specific replacement receiver may be more appropriate than replacing the entire mouse, but availability and compatibility cannot be determined without the exact model.

A concise decision path

  1. Identify wired USB, USB receiver, or Bluetooth.
  2. Check switch, charge or batteries, cable, and sensor.
  3. Reconnect the device; for a receiver, wait about 10 seconds before plugging it back in.
  4. Try a different USB port and bypass any hub.
  5. For Bluetooth, verify Bluetooth is on, remove and re-add the mouse, check range, and inspect adapter power management.
  6. Move nearby USB 3.0 devices if Bluetooth drops continue.
  7. Update the correct host or mouse driver only through the relevant manufacturer’s instructions.
  8. Test the complete mouse setup on another PC.
  9. Repair or replace only the component that the cross-test identifies.
