A gaming monitor that is black or says No Signal usually has one of six causes: no monitor power, a sleeping or failed computer, the wrong input selected, a cable or port problem, a cable connected to the wrong video output, or a resolution/refresh-rate setting the monitor cannot display. Start with the power LED, then verify the physical signal path before changing drivers or buying parts.

The fastest diagnosis is a controlled cross-test: try a known-good cable and port, connect the monitor to another computer or console, and connect the original computer to another working display. Those tests tell you whether the monitor or the computer/GPU is at fault.

Use the power LED to choose the right troubleshooting branch

Look at the monitor’s status light before unplugging video cables. LED conventions vary by model, so confirm the exact meaning in the monitor manual, but Dell’s documented pattern is a useful guide.

LED state What it generally indicates Start here
No light The monitor is not receiving power or is not switched on. Check the power button, cord, adapter and outlet. Do not begin with GPU drivers.
Solid white or green The monitor has power and is detecting a video signal on many models. Check whether the computer is awake and whether the image is being sent to the selected input.
Amber or orange Power is present, but the monitor is in standby or has no video signal on many models. Wake the computer, select the active input and reseat the signal cable.
Blinking white Often power without a valid video signal, depending on the model. Treat it like a no-signal condition and consult the manual for the exact code.

ASUS likewise lists amber as standby or no signal on many LCD and gaming displays. The color alone cannot prove a failed component; it tells you whether to begin with the power path or the video path.

1. Confirm that the monitor itself has power

  1. Press the monitor’s power button. A power strip switch, a rear rocker switch or a touch-sensitive button can be off even when the PC is running.
  2. Reseat the monitor power cord. Push the connector firmly into the monitor and the wall outlet or power strip. If the display uses an external adapter, reseat the adapter at both ends.
  3. Test the outlet. Plug a lamp, charger or another known-working device into the same outlet. If that device also fails, move the monitor to a working outlet.
  4. Try a compatible replacement power cord or adapter. Use one with the same connector and electrical rating; do not substitute an unverified adapter.
  5. Watch the LED. If it remains completely dark after a known-good outlet and correctly connected power equipment, the fault is in the monitor’s power path rather than in HDMI or DisplayPort settings.

ASUS’s troubleshooting guidance begins with this check: “Please check whether power cord is connected or not, or you can use the same power cord attached in another product.” A monitor with no LED should be treated as a power problem until this test proves otherwise.

2. Wake and simplify the computer

A working monitor can remain blank while the computer is asleep, stuck during startup or confused by a dock or another display.

  1. Move the mouse and press a key. Give the system several seconds to wake.
  2. If there is no response, shut the computer down normally if possible. If it is frozen, hold its power button only long enough to turn it off, then start it again.
  3. Disconnect external drives, printers, VR headsets, USB hubs, docks and other nonessential USB devices. Leave only the keyboard, mouse and monitor connected.
  4. Start the computer with a single monitor. Multiple displays, a dock or a headset can cause the system to send the image to a different output during troubleshooting.

If the monitor displays the manufacturer’s logo or the computer’s startup screen and then goes black, continue to the resolution and refresh-rate checks below. If it never shows its own menu or logo, use the power, cable and alternate-device tests first.

3. Verify every part of the signal path

Reseat both ends of the cable

  1. Turn the computer and monitor off, or place them in standby.
  2. Unplug the HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, DVI or VGA cable from the monitor and the computer.
  3. Inspect the connectors. Look for bent pins, cracked housings, debris or a connector that cannot latch securely.
  4. Reconnect both ends firmly. A DisplayPort plug should latch; HDMI and USB-C plugs should be fully inserted without forcing them.
  5. Power on the monitor first, then start the computer.

A cable can be loose enough to prevent a picture while still leaving the monitor’s LED on. Reconnecting both ends removes that simple failure before you spend time on software.

Select the input that is actually connected

Open the monitor’s Input, Source or Input Select menu and choose the physical connector in use. For example, select DisplayPort when the cable is in a DisplayPort socket, or HDMI 1 versus HDMI 2 when the cable is connected to a specific HDMI input. Automatic input detection is convenient but can choose the wrong active port when several cables are attached; selecting the port manually is a better diagnostic.

Use the graphics card output on a gaming desktop

If the desktop has a discrete graphics card, connect the monitor cable to a port on that card, not to the video connector on the motherboard. The motherboard socket may be disabled when a graphics card is installed, or it may be connected to integrated graphics that are not driving the game display.

Support DP, DP++ modes, backward compatible 2.0/1.4/1.3/1.2

Dell describes this exact mistake as common on gaming and high-performance desktops: “Using the wrong port (the one built into the main board) is a common cause of a ‘no signal’ screen, especially on gaming or high-performance desktops.” On the rear of a tower, the graphics-card ports are normally grouped lower down in horizontal rows, while motherboard video ports sit near the USB and network connectors. Use the labels and the computer manual if the layout is unclear.

4. Cross-test the cable and ports

Once the monitor is powered and the input is selected, change one physical variable at a time. This prevents a bad cable from being mistaken for a failed GPU.

  1. Try a known-good cable of the same connector type. ASUS’s exact recommendation is: “Replace other identical signal cable (VGA / DVI / HDMI / DisplayPort / USB-C) to take cross-test.”
  2. Move the cable to another input on the monitor, then select that input in the monitor menu.
  3. Move the cable to another output on the graphics card or computer. If you change from a graphics-card port to a motherboard port, that is not an equivalent test on a discrete-GPU desktop; keep the test on the same active graphics device.
  4. Reconnect the original arrangement after each test and note which combination produces an image.

BenQ’s troubleshooting guidance also calls for another cable and another video port. A cable that works at one resolution may still fail at a higher bandwidth demand, so match the replacement to the connector and the monitor’s resolution and refresh-rate requirements. A certified DisplayPort cable is a practical replacement or diagnostic option when both devices support DisplayPort; HDMI or USB-C is appropriate when those are the available ports. Certification does not repair a failed port, so use it as part of the cross-test rather than as proof that the monitor is defective.

Connection What to verify Common diagnostic mistake
DisplayPort Both ends are fully latched, the monitor is set to DisplayPort, and the cable is suitable for the desired resolution and refresh rate. Leaving the monitor on HDMI after moving the cable, or not fully inserting the plug.
HDMI Correct HDMI input number and a cable rated for the display’s required bandwidth. Testing HDMI 2 while the monitor remains on HDMI 1, or assuming every old cable supports the same mode.
USB-C video The computer’s USB-C port supports video output and the cable supports video, not only charging or data. Using a charge-only cable or a USB-C port without display capability.
DVI or VGA Every connector screw or latch is secure and any required adapter is firmly seated. Blaming the monitor when an adapter or analog connector is loose.

5. Isolate the failed side with two alternate-device tests

Cross-testing devices is more decisive than repeatedly reinstalling software. You need two tests:

  1. Monitor-to-another-device: Connect the monitor to another computer or a game console with a compatible cable and select the corresponding input. ASUS states: “Connected LCD monitor to the other computers (PC / Notebook) to confirm whether it is normal.”
  2. Original-computer-to-another-display: Connect the computer to a working monitor or television using a known-good cable and the graphics-card output.

6. Use the monitor’s on-screen menu when it is available

Reset the monitor to factory settings

Press the monitor’s Menu or OSD button. If the on-screen display appears, find a command named Reset, Restore Factory Mode, Factory Reset or a similar label, then confirm it. BenQ advises resetting all settings in the OSD, and ASUS provides a factory-reset path through its menu. The exact wording and location vary by model.

Correct unsupported resolution or refresh rate

A monitor can show a black screen after the operating system switches to a resolution or refresh rate outside the panel’s supported range. This is especially likely if the image worked until a game, driver update or display change altered the mode.

  1. Connect the computer to another working display, or start Windows in Safe Mode if that is the only way to obtain a picture.
  2. Open the operating system’s display settings and choose a resolution listed as supported by the monitor.
  3. Set a supported refresh rate. If the monitor’s manual lists several modes, begin with the standard resolution and a conservative refresh rate, then increase it after a stable image returns.
  4. Shut down, reconnect the gaming monitor to the graphics-card output, select its input and reboot normally.

ASUS specifically recommends Safe Mode when current display settings are unsupported. If the monitor works in Safe Mode but not normal startup, the panel and basic signal path are probably functioning; correct the mode before investigating drivers.

Install appropriate monitor and graphics drivers only after hardware checks

When another display or Safe Mode works, install the monitor’s manufacturer-provided driver or information file where one is supplied, and update the graphics driver through the GPU manufacturer’s supported process. Drivers can correct software configuration, but no driver utility can repair a dead power supply, broken connector or failed graphics output. Do not use driver changes as a substitute for the cable, port and alternate-device tests.

Symptom-specific decision paths

No LED and no OSD

  • Retest the outlet with another device.
  • Reseat or replace the power cord or correctly rated adapter.
  • Confirm the monitor’s power switch is on.
  • If the LED and OSD remain absent with known-good power, stop changing video settings. The monitor’s power circuitry, adapter or main board may have failed.

LED is amber or blinking, but the OSD works

  • Wake the computer.
  • Select the input matching the connected cable.
  • Reseat both cable ends and try a known-good cable.
  • Use the graphics-card output rather than the motherboard output on a discrete-GPU desktop.
  • Try another monitor input and another graphics-card output.

The monitor works on another device but not the gaming PC

  • Connect to the discrete GPU, not the motherboard.
  • Test another output on the GPU.
  • Use another display to determine whether the GPU produces any signal.
  • If another display works only in Safe Mode, correct resolution and refresh rate and then address the graphics driver.

The gaming PC works on another display, but this monitor fails everywhere

  • Repeat the test with a known-good cable and a different input.
  • Confirm the monitor is not locked to an inactive source.
  • Reset the OSD if it appears.
  • If there is still no image on multiple devices, treat the monitor, adapter or input circuitry as the likely failure.

The image appears intermittently

  • Inspect for a loose latch, bent pin or cable that moves when touched.
  • Try a shorter or known-good cable of the same type.
  • Use another monitor and GPU port.
  • Check whether the problem occurs only at a particular resolution or refresh rate; if so, select a supported mode.

When to stop troubleshooting and request service

Arrange warranty or manufacturer service when a monitor has no LED after verified power checks, has no OSD after a factory reset, or fails with a known-good cable and more than one computer or console. A computer that fails to produce a picture on multiple known-working displays may need graphics-card or system service instead.

Do not open a mains-powered monitor unless you are qualified to work safely on high-voltage equipment. Internal capacitors and power supplies can remain hazardous even after unplugging. Keep the monitor closed and provide the service center with your test results: LED state, whether the OSD appears, cable type, tested inputs, alternate devices and the result of each cross-test.

A compact checklist for future no-signal incidents

  1. Read the LED and confirm whether the monitor has power.
  2. Test the outlet, power cord and adapter.
  3. Wake or restart the computer with nonessential USB devices disconnected.
  4. Reseat both ends of the signal cable and inspect the connectors.
  5. Select the exact monitor input in use.
  6. On a discrete-GPU desktop, connect to a graphics-card port.
  7. Try a known-good cable, another monitor input and another GPU output.
  8. Test the monitor with another computer or console.
  9. Test the original computer with another working display.
  10. Reset the monitor OSD when it is visible.
  11. Use Safe Mode or another display to set a supported resolution and refresh rate.
  12. Escalate to warranty or service when verified power and cross-tests point to hardware failure.
