A gaming laptop’s fans often get louder when a game puts sustained demand on its processor and graphics chip. That alone does not prove something is wrong. Start by checking whether the noise and heat rise with the workload and settle afterward, then restore airflow, check for unnecessary background activity, and use the laptop maker’s supported thermal controls. Noise that persists at idle, grinding or rattling, no apparent airflow, shutdowns, or a continuing loss of performance deserves further checks and may require service.
Is it normal for a gaming laptop to get hot or loud while gaming?
Often, yes. A game can keep the CPU and GPU busy for long stretches, and the laptop may increase fan speed to move heat out of the chassis. ASUS explains that fans can accelerate as game-related CPU and GPU temperatures rise; MSI likewise includes heavy use and cooling settings in its notebook overheating guidance. A louder fan during a demanding game, followed by quieter operation when the load ends, can therefore be normal thermal control rather than a fault.
There is no single temperature number that establishes overheating for every gaming laptop. Cooling design, processor, graphics hardware, workload, fan profile, and the laptop maker’s control logic differ. HP’s guidance for supported OMEN and Victus computers, for example, discusses temperature and performance behavior for particular processor families and configurations; those points are not universal limits for other models. Avoid using a temperature from another laptop as the sole reason to open your machine, change a fan curve, or disable a safety feature.

When the noise needs attention
Investigate if the fans stay unusually loud when the laptop is idle, the sound becomes rattly or grinding, air does not seem to move through the vents, or the machine shuts down, restarts, or loses performance under load. Dell identifies loud fans, shutdowns, and reduced performance among possible overheating symptoms. A fan that does not run when expected is also worth checking: fan activation thresholds vary, so do not assume every laptop should keep its fans spinning at idle.

Pay attention to the pattern, not just the loudness. Note whether the behavior started after a game, update, change in placement, or accumulation of dust; whether it stops after closing the game; and whether it affects one game or all demanding workloads. This makes it easier to distinguish a workload-related response from an airflow, software, or hardware issue.
What to check first: a quick decision guide
| What you notice | What it may indicate | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Fans rise during a game and settle after you exit | Expected cooling response to sustained CPU or GPU use | Check that vents are clear, then choose a supported thermal profile that suits your noise and performance needs. |
| Fans are loud at idle or remain loud after the game closes | A background process, restricted airflow, dust, or a fan issue may be involved | Check Task Manager, move the laptop to a hard flat surface, and inspect accessible vent openings. |
| Rattling or grinding, or no apparent airflow | A physical fan or cooling-system problem is possible | Do not try to force a fan curve or dismantle the laptop as a first step; run the maker’s available fan diagnostic or contact support. |
| Unexpected shutdowns or restarts, or sustained performance loss | The laptop may be struggling to cool itself or may have another fault | Save your work, reduce or stop the demanding workload, run the available manufacturer diagnostics, and seek service if the issue persists. |
The signs above are clues, not a diagnosis. A loud fan alone cannot identify a failed fan, a blocked heatsink, or a particular temperature problem. Work through the low-risk checks before deciding whether repair is needed.
Step 1: Restore airflow around the laptop
Placement is the easiest thing to correct and can make a meaningful difference when an intake or exhaust is blocked. Put the laptop on a hard, flat surface such as a desk. A bed, blanket, couch, or pillow can obstruct openings underneath or along the sides and rear. Keep the intake and exhaust vents clear; their locations vary by model, and some laptops exhaust near the hinge.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Exit the game or other demanding application and give the laptop a chance to settle.
- Move it onto a hard, flat surface, away from soft fabric and objects covering its openings.
- Look up the vent locations for your exact model in its manual or manufacturer support instructions. Keep those areas unobstructed, including the hinge area if it is an exhaust.
- If raising the chassis helps keep openings clear, consider a stand or cooling pad as an optional airflow aid.
A stand or cooling pad is not a fix for a failed fan, heavy internal dust, or a cooling-system fault. It may help with placement and clearance, but there is no established temperature reduction that can be promised across laptops. Also avoid treating a maker’s environmental guidance as universal: ASUS, for example, gives an operating range of 5°C to 35°C for its devices. Check the guidance for your own laptop rather than applying that ASUS range to every model.

Step 2: Check whether software is keeping the system busy
A game is not always the only thing using system resources. An application or process running in the background can keep CPU activity high, contribute to heat, and prompt the fans to run faster. Windows Task Manager provides a built-in first check; third-party cleanup software is not a necessary starting point.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - On the Processes page, look at the CPU and Memory columns. Select a column heading to sort by that resource and see which processes are using the most.
- Close applications you recognize and do not need right now. Save work first, and avoid ending unfamiliar Windows or manufacturer processes just because they appear near the top.
- Wait briefly and check whether the system settles. If the same process remains unusually busy when you are not gaming, investigate that application or consult its support instructions.
- After checking software, test the laptop again under the same game or workload and compare the behavior.
Do not assume high memory use alone proves a cooling fault. The useful question is whether an unnecessary application is consuming resources and whether closing it changes the symptoms. MSI and Dell also include software or system updates in their troubleshooting guidance. Use the laptop maker’s instructions for BIOS and driver updates, confirm the exact model, and do not start a BIOS update with unstable power or while the machine is behaving unreliably.
Step 3: Choose a supported thermal or fan mode
Many gaming laptops offer a control utility with thermal, performance, or fan settings. The labels and availability depend on the model and software version, so use the controls documented for your exact computer. A maximum-cooling setting can be conspicuously loud; a quieter or lower-performance profile can reduce fan noise but may also limit performance. Neither tradeoff is a reason to disable thermal protection.
ASUS ROG and TUF models
ASUS directs gaming-specific fan adjustment on ROG and TUF systems to Armoury Crate. Open the utility and choose a supported mode appropriate to what you are doing. The precise choices can vary by model. If the laptop becomes loud only while a game is running, a mode that prioritizes cooling may be expected to make more noise; if you prefer less noise, a quieter supported mode may make a performance tradeoff.

MSI notebooks
MSI’s notebook fan-mode guidance describes Auto, which adjusts fan behavior based on temperature; Cooler Boost, which runs fans at full speed; and Advanced, which provides custom fan settings on supported models. Cooler Boost is intended to maximize fan operation, so louder sound is an expected tradeoff. Advanced settings are not available on every model, and a custom curve should not be used to override the computer’s safety controls.
Supported HP OMEN and Victus systems
HP describes thermal-profile choices and a performance-versus-noise tradeoff for supported OMEN and Victus configurations. HP’s guidance also notes a quiet thermal profile on supported notebook PCs. Check the control options documented for your configuration rather than expecting every OMEN or Victus laptop to offer the same setting or menu.
These examples are not interchangeable instructions. A mode name on one brand or model does not establish that another laptop has the same control. If you cannot find the documented setting, check the manufacturer’s support material for your product and software version; do not install an unrelated fan-control utility or prescribe a fan curve by guesswork.
Step 4: Clean vents cautiously and only as the maker directs
Dust can obstruct cooling, but cleaning advice differs among manufacturers. Shut the laptop down and unplug it before cleaning, then consult the manual or support page for the exact model and the permitted method. Do not treat instructions for another brand as permission to use the same method on your laptop.

- Power the laptop off completely and unplug the power adapter and attached peripherals.
- Find the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for your model and identify the intake and exhaust openings.
- Clean only as those instructions allow. If they specify canned compressed air, follow their distance and can-position cautions; do not substitute a high-pressure air compressor.
- Do not open the chassis or attempt internal fan or heatsink cleaning unless the manufacturer’s instructions support that work and you are qualified to do it.
- If dust appears to be deep inside, the vents remain obstructed, or symptoms continue after external cleaning, contact manufacturer support or a qualified service provider.
The cautions matter because the advice is not identical across brands. ASUS warns that excessive pressure from an air compressor can damage fan blades and recommends canned air at a distance with the can upright. MSI mentions compressed-air cans or blowers at a distance in its guidance. Dell recommends a can and warns against blowers and vacuum cleaners because of static risk. Follow the instructions for your particular laptop; do not combine these directions into a universal cleaning method.
Step 5: Run the manufacturer’s fan or hardware diagnostics
If the fan behaves abnormally, use a diagnostic tool provided for your laptop when available. The tool name and availability depend on the manufacturer and model. A failed result is a reason to contact support rather than repeatedly testing the system under heavy load.
- ASUS: MyASUS can provide fan diagnostics on supported devices. ASUS advises visiting service if the diagnostic detects an issue.
- MSI: MSI Center provides fan diagnostics for supported notebooks. Consult the notebook instructions for access and next steps.
- Dell: Dell recommends SupportAssist or ePSA diagnostics and contacting support for failed tests. If the problem remains after troubleshooting, Dell also advises contacting support.
Record the diagnostic result or error code, the laptop’s exact model, and when the problem occurs. This gives support useful details without requiring you to guess which component has failed. If a test fails, the fan stops operating, or the computer shuts down unexpectedly, avoid continuing long gaming sessions as a way to test it.

- Performance remains reduced or the laptop continues to overheat after placement, software, and supported profile checks.
- The fan makes a new grinding or rattling sound, or the problem appears to require internal cleaning or repair.
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider for assessment. Do not make opening the chassis, replacing thermal paste, or disabling thermal protections a routine first-line fix. If the system is unstable, stop the demanding workload and preserve your work before seeking assistance.
Why a gaming laptop fan may be loud at idle
When the noise does not track a game, first check whether a background process is keeping the CPU busy, whether the laptop is on a soft surface, and whether accessible vents are obstructed. Then review the supported thermal mode and run the manufacturer’s available diagnostic if the noise continues. Dust, unsuitable surroundings, a worn or faulty fan, and background activity are all plausible causes identified in manufacturer troubleshooting guidance; the sound by itself does not establish which one applies.
If the noise is grinding or rattling, airflow is missing, a diagnostic fails, or shutdowns and performance loss occur, stop treating it as an ordinary fan-profile choice and contact support. A quiet mode may change fan behavior, but it cannot repair a mechanical fault or safely compensate for blocked internal cooling.

How to reduce fan noise without compromising cooling
There is no setting that guarantees both maximum cooling and silence during a sustained game. Instead, make one supported change at a time and see whether it suits your workload.
- Make sure the laptop is on a hard, flat surface with its openings clear.
- Close unneeded applications and check Task Manager for a process that remains busy.
- Select a supported quiet or balanced thermal profile if your model offers one, then check whether the game still performs acceptably.
- If the laptop becomes too warm or performance suffers, return to a more cooling-focused supported profile rather than overriding the fan or safety controls.
- If the fan is loud even after the game closes, or you observe other warning signs, use the diagnostic and service steps rather than trying to silence the symptom.
Dell also lists reducing game graphics settings among the steps to try when a computer is unusually warm. This can reduce workload in some situations, though the effect depends on the game and laptop. Treat it as an option to test, not a guaranteed cure for an airflow restriction or faulty fan.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every high temperature dangerous: operating behavior is model- and workload-specific; no universal cutoff is established here.
- Blocking the laptop’s underside: a bed, blanket, or cushion may restrict intake even if the exhaust looks clear.
- Using a high-pressure compressor or vacuum: manufacturer cleaning instructions differ, and ASUS and Dell warn against specific tools and risks.
- Changing BIOS settings or fan curves by guesswork: use only supported instructions for the exact model, and never disable thermal protections.
- Opening the chassis as a routine first step: internal cleaning or repair may be appropriate for a qualified technician, but it is not a safe default instruction for every owner.
- Assuming a cooling pad will solve any heat problem: it may help elevate the laptop, but it does not prove or repair an internal fault.
- Continuing repeated stress tests after shutdowns or a failed diagnostic: stop the demanding workload and seek service instead.
