If your gaming headset is connected but you hear nothing, or teammates cannot hear you, work through the problem in this order: check power, mute and volume; verify the connection and selected input/output; separate game audio from chat; then test the microphone and wireless environment. A headset can show as connected while still being muted, routed to the wrong device, assigned only to game or chat, or using an incompatible connection mode.
The exact controls differ between wired, USB-wireless and Bluetooth headsets, and between PCs and consoles. Use the steps that match your connection rather than assuming another model’s menu names or reset buttons apply.
Start with this six-step diagnosis
Do these checks before replacing a cable, microphone, adapter or headset. Stop when the fault is resolved, but keep notes about which change worked.
- Power, charge, mute and volume: Turn the headset off and on. Charge a wireless model. Check its physical mute button, inline switch and boom position. Raise both headset and system volume.
- Connection and output: Reseat a wired plug or wireless transmitter, confirm pairing, and select the headset as the active output device.
- Game versus chat: Check whether game audio and voice chat are assigned to different devices or controlled by a game/chat balance wheel.
- Microphone: Unmute the microphone, select it as the input, allow microphone access and check the platform’s input level.
- Wireless placement: Move the adapter away from USB 3.0 devices and other wireless equipment. An extension cable can help in this specific interference scenario.
- Cross-test: Try the headset on another compatible source and a known-good headset on the original source. This shows whether the fault follows the headset or stays with the computer or console.
Identify how your headset is connected
The correct fix depends on the connection. A control or menu that exists for a USB wireless headset may not exist for a wired or Bluetooth model.

| Connection | First physical checks | Common routing issue |
|---|---|---|
| Wired 3.5 mm or USB | Reseat the plug at the headset and source; inspect the intended port or controller connection. | The computer or console may still be using built-in speakers, another USB device or the controller’s output. |
| USB wireless adapter | Reseat the transmitter, power-cycle the headset and confirm that pairing is active. | The transmitter may be connected but the headset is not selected for output or microphone input. |
| Bluetooth | Confirm the headset is connected to the intended device and charged. | Bluetooth can expose separate playback and call/chat profiles; another device may take the microphone connection. |
| 2.4 GHz plus Bluetooth | Temporarily disconnect the second device. | On documented Sony INZONE configurations, Bluetooth can take the microphone for a call or chat while 2.4 GHz carries PC or PlayStation audio. |
1. Check power, mute, charge and volume
Wireless power and charging
Switch the headset off, wait briefly, and turn it on again. Confirm its battery indicator shows a usable charge. A headset may remain listed as connected after its battery is too low to produce reliable audio or microphone input. If the model has a charging indicator, verify that it responds when connected to power.
Physical mute controls
Check every mute point: the headset’s mute button, an inline cable switch, a flip-up boom and any button on the wireless adapter. Some booms mute when raised and unmute when lowered. Watch for a mute light or on-screen indicator, but do not rely on one indicator alone.
Raise both volume controls
Increase the headset’s own volume wheel or buttons and the operating system or console volume. If sound is present but very quiet, check for a separate chat-volume or game-volume control rather than repeatedly raising the master volume.

Wired headsets
- Unplug the headset from the computer, console or controller.
- Reconnect it firmly at both ends. If the headset uses a detachable cable, reseat that connector too.
- Confirm that the port you used carries audio and microphone signals for that headset. A device can have separate headphone and microphone sockets, while a controller may require a combined headset plug.
- Open the source device’s sound controls and choose the headset for playback. Do not assume that plugging it in automatically changes the output.
USB wireless headsets
- Remove and reconnect the USB transmitter.
- Power-cycle the headset and wait for the pairing or connection indicator.
- Remove unused wireless adapters temporarily so you can identify the active device.
- In the computer or console sound controls, select the headset or its transmitter for both playback and microphone input where appropriate.
Bluetooth headsets
Confirm that the headset is connected to the device you are actually using. If it is paired with a phone, tablet and computer, disconnect the unused devices for a test. A Bluetooth connection can remain active on one device while you expect sound from another.
Windows sound selection
On Windows, open the Sound settings (commonly Settings > System > Sound) and inspect the selected output and input devices. Choose the headset rather than built-in speakers, a monitor, a controller or a different USB device. Use Windows’ available output-device troubleshooting flow if the headset is detected but silent; the wording and location can vary by Windows version.
Model-specific transceiver modes
Some headsets use a switch on the USB transceiver to select a computer or PlayStation mode. Sony’s INZONE H9, H7, H6 Air, H5 and H3 guidance, for example, distinguishes GAME and chat outputs and requires the transceiver switch to be in the correct position for microphone recognition. Treat that as a model-specific example: do not apply its switch positions or menu names to another headset.

3. Separate game audio from voice chat
When game sound works but chat does not, or chat works while game sound is missing, the headset is often functional and the two audio paths are misassigned.
Recommended Free Tools
Check both selected devices
Inspect the platform’s playback device and microphone device, then inspect the game or voice-chat application’s own audio settings. A game can override the operating system’s default output, and a chat application can select a different microphone.
Check the game/chat mix
Many gaming headsets have a GAME/CHAT wheel, buttons or a balance rocker. Move the control toward the missing side, then return it near the centre. A fully shifted balance can make one side appear dead even when the headset is receiving audio.
PlayStation balance controls
PlayStation’s wireless-headset guidance describes model-specific CHAT/GAME controls and, on supported headsets, a simultaneous button press that resets the balance. Use the combination printed for your model rather than assuming every PlayStation headset shares the same shortcut.
INZONE output separation
Sony’s INZONE documentation lists separate GAME and chat outputs on supported computer and PlayStation configurations. If only one stream is audible, verify both outputs and the headset’s balance control before changing hardware.
4. Fix a microphone that is not working
Start at the headset
- Check the physical mute button, inline switch and flip-up boom.
- If the boom is detachable, remove and reconnect it firmly.
- Confirm the headset is in the connection mode that supports its microphone. Some wireless models provide playback in more modes than they provide microphone input.
Select the microphone input
In the platform’s audio settings, choose the headset microphone instead of a laptop microphone, webcam, controller or another USB device. Then open the game or chat application and select the same microphone there if it has its own device menu.

Allow access and check the level
When Windows, a console or a game asks for microphone permission, allow it. Inspect the platform’s microphone level or input meter while speaking. If the meter never moves, the issue is still at the mute, connection, permission or input-selection stage. If the meter moves but teammates hear nothing, check the chat application’s selected input, voice-activation threshold and chat-specific mute.
Dual-connection Bluetooth case
Sony documents a specific INZONE behavior in which a headset connected to a PC or PS5 over 2.4 GHz and to a phone over Bluetooth can route the microphone to a Bluetooth call or chat device. The result can be working game audio with no PC or PS5 microphone. Disconnect Bluetooth temporarily and test again. This is documented for those INZONE configurations, not a universal rule for every dual-connected headset.
5. Reduce wireless interference
If audio cuts out, the microphone drops intermittently or the headset connects but behaves unreliably, test the physical placement before changing software.

- Make sure the USB adapter is fully inserted.
- Remove unused wireless adapters and nearby devices for the test.
- Move the adapter away from other wireless equipment and large obstructions.
- On PlayStation, try a USB extension cable to create distance between the wireless adapter and nearby USB 3.0 devices. PlayStation specifically documents this as an interference measure.
An extension cable only changes adapter placement. It cannot unmute a headset, select the correct output, grant microphone permission, add unsupported compatibility or repair failed hardware. Confirm the extension’s connector and the console or computer’s port requirements before using it.
6. Cross-test the headset and source
Test the headset on another compatible device
Use a device that supports the same connection type and functions. Test playback and microphone separately. A wired headset may need a compatible combined jack or splitter; a wireless headset may require its original transmitter.
Test the original source with another headset
A known-good compatible headset can reveal whether the computer, console, controller, USB port or application is the cause. If the second headset also fails, return to source settings, permissions, port selection and chat configuration.

| Failure follows the headset to another compatible source | Headset cable, boom, transmitter, battery or internal hardware | Check the maker’s model-specific support and warranty or repair options before buying parts. |
| Another headset works on the original source | Original headset or its connection accessory | Inspect the cable, adapter, boom and mode switch; follow the maker’s reset procedure only when documented for that model. |
| Several headsets fail on the original source | Source settings, port, permissions, application or console configuration | Recheck output/input selection, game/chat routing and the source’s audio controls. |
| Only one game or chat app fails | That app’s device selection, mute or voice settings | Choose the headset inside the app and verify its own microphone and chat controls. |
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| Symptom | Check first |
|---|---|
| No sound anywhere | Power, charge, physical mute, master volume, connection and selected output. |
| Sound is too low | Headset volume, system volume and any independent game/chat balance. |
| Game audio works but voice chat is silent | Chat output, application device selection, chat mute and GAME/CHAT balance. |
| Voice chat works but game audio is silent | Game output, GAME/CHAT balance and the game’s own audio device setting. |
| Others cannot hear you | Physical mute, selected microphone, permission, input level and connection mode. |
| Microphone works on a phone but not PC or console | Platform compatibility, transceiver mode, input selection and any second Bluetooth connection. |
| Audio or microphone cuts out near a console | Adapter seating, nearby wireless devices and USB 3.0 interference. |
Common traps that make a working headset seem broken
- Connected is not the same as selected: A source can list the headset while sending sound to speakers, a monitor, a controller or another USB device.
- One stream can be muted independently: A centred master volume does not correct a GAME/CHAT control moved fully toward the other stream.
- Application settings can override system defaults: Check the game and chat app after checking Windows or console audio settings.
- Bluetooth can stay active elsewhere: Disconnect a phone, tablet or second computer during testing so it cannot claim the call or chat path.
- Accessories have narrow jobs: A USB extension cable addresses adapter placement near USB 3.0 devices; it does not repair a cable, add microphone support or fix permissions.
- Reset instructions are not interchangeable: Use only the button combination and firmware process published for the exact model.
A platform-aware decision path
On a Windows PC, first identify the selected output and input in Settings > System > Sound, then repeat the check inside the game or voice-chat program. If the headset is detected but silent, use the available Windows output-device troubleshooting flow. For a USB-wireless model, also verify the transmitter’s connection and any PC/console mode switch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →On PlayStation, check the headset’s physical controls and the console’s selected audio devices, then inspect the model’s CHAT/GAME controls. Supported wireless headsets may have a documented button combination to reset the balance. Wireless adapter seating and distance from USB 3.0 equipment matter when the fault is intermittent.
For a controller-connected wired headset, verify that the plug is the correct combined type and that the controller is the intended audio route. For Bluetooth, test with unused paired devices disconnected and confirm that the headset supports microphone input in the selected mode.
When to reset, update or replace something
Follow model-specific instructions
Reset buttons, firmware procedures and pairing combinations differ by headset. Do not apply a button sequence from another model. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact headset before resetting or changing firmware.
Do not replace parts prematurely
A new cable, boom microphone, transmitter or headset will not fix a muted control, wrong output, disabled microphone permission or an incorrect game/chat balance. Replace a part only after cross-testing points to that component and the manufacturer confirms compatibility.
Escalate after the cross-test
If the headset fails on compatible devices after the checks above, contact the maker or platform support with the model, connection type, source device and the cross-test results. PlayStation directs users with continuing wireless-headset problems to its support service. Keeping those details together makes it easier to distinguish a configuration issue from a hardware fault.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my gaming headset connected but there is no sound?
Check the headset’s charge, physical mute and volume first. Then select it as the source’s output instead of speakers, a monitor, a controller or another USB device. Finally check whether a GAME/CHAT balance control has shifted all audio to the other stream.
Why can I hear the game but not voice chat?
Game and chat may use separate outputs or balance controls. Verify the chat device in the platform and the chat application, check chat mute, and move the headset’s GAME/CHAT control toward chat before returning it near centre.
Why can people not hear my microphone?
Check the boom, inline switch and headset mute, select the headset as the platform and application input, allow microphone access and watch the input meter. If the meter never moves, revisit mute, connection mode, permissions and input selection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy does the microphone work on my phone but not my PC or PS5?
The selected platform may use a different input, a transceiver may be in the wrong mode, or a second Bluetooth connection may be claiming the microphone. Disconnect Bluetooth temporarily and verify the platform’s input settings.
Will a USB extension cable fix a wireless headset?
Only when nearby USB 3.0 devices or adapter placement are contributing to wireless interference. It cannot fix muting, incorrect output selection, microphone permissions, unsupported compatibility or failed hardware. Confirm the connector and port requirements first.
How do I tell whether the headset or the computer/console is faulty?
Test the headset on another compatible source and a known-good headset on the original source. If the failure follows the headset, investigate its cable, boom, transmitter, battery or hardware. If multiple headsets fail on the original source, investigate its settings, port, permissions or application.
Should I reset the headset or buy a replacement immediately?
No. Reset procedures and pairing combinations vary by model, and replacement parts cannot correct routing, mute or permission errors. Cross-test first, then follow the manufacturer’s exact reset, repair or warranty guidance.
The Bottom Line
Most “no sound” and “bad microphone” complaints are routing, mute, balance or connection-mode problems rather than immediate hardware failures. Check power and controls, select the correct game and chat devices, isolate Bluetooth and wireless interference, then cross-test the headset and source. Replace a part or escalate only when that comparison points to a model-specific hardware fault.
