When Windows does not recognize a gaming controller, first determine whether the failure is at the connection layer or inside one game. A wired controller usually points you toward the USB port, cable, or Device Manager status. A Bluetooth controller requires working Bluetooth hardware, a charged device in pairing mode, and a successful Windows pairing. If Windows lists the controller but a game does not respond, Windows discovery has succeeded and the remaining problem is game support or configuration.
Use the checks below in order. They separate a faulty port or cable from a driver problem, pairing failure, and a game-specific limitation without installing unrelated driver utilities.
Start by identifying the failure
Do not assume every wireless controller uses Bluetooth. Some use a dedicated USB receiver, and that receiver has its own compatibility and driver requirements. Identify the connection method and record exactly what Windows does.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- USB cable: The controller is connected directly to a USB port.
- Bluetooth: The controller is paired through the PC’s Bluetooth radio.
- Dedicated receiver: A small USB wireless adapter connects the controller to Windows; follow the exact model’s instructions.
Then check where the failure occurs:
- Does the controller appear in Device Manager?
- For Bluetooth, does it appear under Windows Bluetooth devices?
- Does the problem affect every game or only one title?
- Does Windows show an error such as "The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it"?
These observations determine which branch to follow. A controller that is invisible to Windows needs connection or driver troubleshooting. A controller visible to Windows but ignored by one game needs that game’s controller-support and configuration guidance.

Quick decision table: USB versus Bluetooth
| Connection | First checks | Where to verify Windows detection | Likely failure points |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB cable | Try another direct USB port; inspect Device Manager; test a compatible data cable if detachable | Device Manager and the device-status message | Port, cable, controller hardware, or device driver |
| Bluetooth | Confirm Bluetooth is available and on; charge, power on, and put the controller in pairing mode; keep it nearby | Settings Bluetooth device list and Device Manager for the Bluetooth adapter | Missing or disabled Bluetooth hardware, pairing state, range, interference, or adapter driver |
| Dedicated wireless receiver | Confirm the receiver is connected and supported by the controller model | Device Manager and the controller maker’s documentation | Receiver compatibility, USB connection, model-specific driver, or controller fault |
| Any connection | Check whether Windows sees it before testing a game | Windows device and Bluetooth settings | Game support can be separate from Windows recognition |
Fix a wired USB controller
1. Try a different USB port
Disconnect the controller and connect it directly to another USB port on the PC. Avoid a USB hub for this first check so that the port and controller are tested without an intermediate device. Microsoft’s USB troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends another port when Windows reports that a USB device is not recognized.
Give Windows a moment to detect the controller after reconnecting it. If one port works and another does not, the controller may be fine and the original port, hub, or its power or data connection is the problem.
2. Read the Device Manager status
- Open Device Manager from the Windows search box.
- Expand the category where the controller appears, and also check for an Unknown device entry.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Open the device’s Properties and read the Device status message and error code on the General tab.
Record the exact code before changing anything. Microsoft’s guidance is to use the corresponding Device Manager instructions for that code; different codes can indicate different device or driver conditions. If the controller is listed without a warning, Windows may already recognize it even if a particular game does not use it.

If the controller has a detachable lead, test a known-compatible data cable with the correct connector. A cable that supplies power but lacks data conductors can light the controller while giving Windows nothing to enumerate. This is a practical USB diagnostic, not a universal controller specification, so match the connector and data capability to the exact model.
Do not replace a cable blindly if the same controller fails on several known-good ports and another PC. At that point, consult the controller maker’s support page for the model’s supported cable, firmware, and connection modes.
4. Check whether the problem follows the controller
After trying another port and a compatible data cable, connect the controller to a second Windows PC if one is available. A failure on multiple ports and PCs points toward the controller, its cable, or model-specific firmware rather than one computer’s USB stack. A controller that works elsewhere points back to the original PC’s port, driver, or Windows configuration.

Fix a Bluetooth controller that does not appear
1. Confirm the PC has working Bluetooth
Some desktop computers do not include Bluetooth hardware, and a disabled or faulty adapter can make Bluetooth options disappear. Confirm that Bluetooth is present and switched on in Windows. If the adapter is absent or marked with a warning in Device Manager, resolve that condition before trying to pair the controller.

An external USB Bluetooth adapter is relevant only when the PC lacks working Bluetooth hardware. Before buying one, verify that the adapter and controller support compatible Bluetooth behavior; compatibility is not universal, and the available guidance does not establish one adapter that works with every controller.
2. Prepare the controller for pairing
- Charge the controller sufficiently for pairing.
- Power it on.
- Place it in its model-specific Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Keep it close to the PC during setup.
- Temporarily disconnect or switch off another device that may already be holding the controller’s connection.
Pairing mode is not the same as merely powering on. Use the exact button combination documented for the model; there is no universal procedure that can be safely applied to every controller.
3. Remove and add the controller again
If Windows lists the controller but it will not connect, remove the old entry and pair it again.
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices. Select the controller’s menu and remove it, then choose Add device.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Devices > Add Bluetooth or other device. Remove the existing controller entry first if it is present, then add it again.
- Choose Bluetooth when Windows asks what kind of device to add, put the controller in pairing mode, and select it when it appears.
Windows labels can vary by release, but the paths above identify the current Settings areas for Windows 10 and 11.

Microsoft notes that some USB 3.0 devices can interfere with nearby Bluetooth connections. If pairing is intermittent or the controller disconnects, temporarily move the controller or Bluetooth adapter away from nearby USB 3.0 devices and retry. This is a location test: if the connection improves, rearrange the adapter or cabling rather than repeatedly deleting the controller.

Update or reinstall the Bluetooth adapter driver
A controller can fail to pair because the PC’s Bluetooth adapter driver is missing, outdated, or malfunctioning. Use Windows’ own driver paths first.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth and identify the PC’s adapter. A warning icon indicates a device-status problem.
- Right-click the adapter and choose Update driver, then allow Windows to search for an available driver.
- Also check Windows Update for optional or hardware updates offered for the PC.
- Restart Windows and try pairing again.
If updating does not help, Microsoft describes reinstalling the adapter driver through Device Manager: uninstall the Bluetooth adapter device, restart the PC, and let Windows reinstall it. If Windows cannot supply a suitable driver, use the computer manufacturer’s support page for the exact PC model. Avoid generic driver-updater programs; they can install an unrelated package and make the original diagnosis harder.
Driver availability and Settings labels can change between releases. The Microsoft hardware and Bluetooth guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so a Windows 10 PC may have fewer future driver or feature updates than a supported Windows 11 installation.
When Windows sees the controller but a game does not
Once the controller appears in Windows, stop treating the issue as a USB or Bluetooth discovery failure. Some games provide no direct controller support, while others require a particular input mode or an in-game setting.
- Verify that the game explicitly supports your controller type and connection method.
- Open the game’s current documentation or settings and enable its controller or gamepad option if one exists.
- Test the controller in Windows first. If Windows detects it but the game does not, the remaining fault is in the game’s support, input mapping, or configuration.
- Check the game maker’s current instructions rather than copying steps written for another title or an older release.
Microsoft’s controller article used for this distinction concerns legacy editions of Flight Simulator X. Its detailed steps should not be presented as universal instructions for modern games. The general point remains useful: Windows recognition and support inside an individual game are separate checks.

A controller that uses a proprietary USB receiver is neither a simple wired USB device nor a Bluetooth pairing case. Connect the receiver directly to a USB port, check Device Manager for its status, and confirm that the receiver belongs to the controller model. Receivers are not automatically interchangeable.

If Windows detects the receiver but the controller will not connect, follow the model’s pairing or firmware procedure from the manufacturer. If the receiver is absent or reports a device-specific error on several ports, the receiver itself may be faulty. The available Windows guidance does not support a universal receiver-reset or firmware procedure, so do not apply instructions from a different model.

What to do when none of the basic checks work
Use a symptom-based escalation
- Fails on one USB port only: Keep using a working port and investigate the original port or hub.
- Fails on every port but works on another PC: Focus on the first PC’s Device Manager status, Windows updates, and manufacturer-specific drivers.
- Fails on multiple PCs: Check the controller cable, receiver, model documentation, firmware support, and warranty options.
- Bluetooth is missing entirely: Confirm that the PC has Bluetooth hardware or install a compatible external adapter.
- Bluetooth appears with a warning: Update or reinstall the adapter driver and restart.
- Windows detects the controller but one game does not: Follow that game’s current support and input-configuration instructions.
When contacting support, provide the exact controller model, connection method, Windows version, Device Manager status text or error code, ports tested, and whether another PC detects it. Those details let the manufacturer distinguish a cable, receiver, driver, firmware, and game-support issue.
Buying a replacement cable or Bluetooth adapter
Purchase hardware only after the corresponding diagnostic points to it.
- Detachable USB cable: Search for a USB data cable with the controller’s exact connector. Confirm that it supports data, not only charging. A cable cannot fix a Bluetooth pairing, driver, game-support, or failed-controller problem.
- USB Bluetooth adapter: Consider one only when the PC lacks working Bluetooth hardware. Verify compatibility between the adapter, Windows version, and controller before buying. An adapter will not repair a controller that fails on another compatible PC.
Keep the controller model and connector type in the purchase notes. Similar-looking connectors and wireless standards do not guarantee compatibility.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Testing only one USB port and assuming the controller is dead.
- Using a charge-only cable for a data connection.
- Pairing a Bluetooth controller without putting it into pairing mode.
- Ignoring a yellow Device Manager warning and repeatedly launching the game.
- Installing an unrelated driver utility instead of using Device Manager, Windows Update, or the PC maker’s support page.
- Assuming a controller that Windows recognizes must be supported by every game.
- Applying instructions for an older Flight Simulator X edition to a current game.
- Buying a Bluetooth adapter without checking whether the PC already has working Bluetooth or whether the adapter and controller are compatible.
Recommended order of operations
For the fastest diagnosis, follow this sequence and stop when the symptom changes:
- Identify USB, Bluetooth, or dedicated receiver.
- Check whether Windows lists the device and whether the problem affects every game.
- For USB, try another direct port, inspect Device Manager, and test a compatible data cable.
- For Bluetooth, confirm hardware and Bluetooth status, charge and pair the controller nearby, then remove and re-add it.
- Update or reinstall the Bluetooth adapter driver if Device Manager shows a warning or pairing still fails.
- Test the controller in Windows before changing game settings.
- If Windows works but one game does not, use that game’s current controller-support instructions.
- If the controller fails across ports and PCs, escalate with the exact model details to the manufacturer.
This sequence isolates the connection, Windows driver, and game layers in that order, so each result tells you what to test next.
