Start with the launcher account and launch path, then verify or repair the installed files before reinstalling anything. A game may fail because the storefront cannot confirm ownership, a publisher launcher handoff is broken, files are damaged, a cache or overlay interferes, or the computer lacks a required permission or update. The exact game, storefront, publisher launcher, operating-system version, and error message determine which branch applies.
Work through the checks below in order. They are designed to be reversible, and they separate a two-launcher problem from a damaged installation or a system-level problem.
1. Record exactly what happens when you select Play
Do not begin by deleting files or reinstalling the game. First reproduce the failure once and write down the visible symptom. “Won’t launch” can describe several different failures that need different fixes.

Also note the game’s name, the storefront (such as Epic Games Store or Steam), any required publisher launcher, your Windows version, and the graphics-driver version. Support can use those details to avoid sending you through irrelevant steps.

2. Confirm the account, launch route, service status, and updates
These checks are quick and can resolve an apparent installation problem without touching local files.
- Sign in to the account that purchased or claimed the game. If several people use the computer, sign out and back in to the intended storefront account. Epic Games Store says its “Application not owned” message can appear when a game is started from a desktop shortcut or another launcher instead of the account’s library.
- Open the storefront’s Library and start the game there. Do not use an old desktop shortcut for this test. If the game is missing from the library, resolve the account or entitlement issue before troubleshooting the installation.
- Check the storefront and publisher service-status pages. An outage can prevent authentication or a launcher handoff even when local files are healthy. Retry after a service incident is resolved rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
- Update every launcher involved. Install the pending storefront update and, if the game uses one, the publisher-launcher update. Restart the launcher after updating so it loads the new components.
- Restart the computer once. This clears a stuck launcher process and completes updates that were waiting for a reboot.
If the game launches from the library after these checks, keep using that route. A shortcut or third-party launcher that bypasses the supported entitlement check may fail again even though the game files are fine.
3. Follow the supported handoff for a two-launcher game
A storefront may install a game while a publisher launcher supplies authentication, updates, or online services. Do not assume that closing one launcher or bypassing it will work; some games require the handoff.
Epic Games Store to Ubisoft Connect
Epic Games Store publishes a specific procedure for an Epic-launched Ubisoft game. Use it only for that Epic/Ubisoft combination, not as a universal recipe for other launchers.
- Update the Epic Games Launcher.
- Clear the Epic launcher cache using Epic’s cache-clearing procedure.
- Open Ubisoft Connect and confirm that the game appears in its Library. If it does not, check that the Ubisoft account linked to the purchase is the one currently signed in.
- Exit the Epic Games Launcher completely, including its background process.
- Start Ubisoft Connect with administrator permission for this test.
- Launch the game from the Ubisoft Connect Library.
If this sequence works, the failure was in the handoff state rather than necessarily in the game installation. If the title never appears in the publisher library, stop and resolve the account-linking or entitlement issue instead of deleting the game.

Other storefront and publisher combinations
For every other combination, use the publisher’s documented launch path. Confirm which launcher owns the installation, which account owns the entitlement, and whether the publisher requires its launcher to remain open. Do not promise that a direct executable, a desktop shortcut, or a command-line bypass will avoid a required launcher; it may remove the authentication step and produce a different error.
4. Verify or repair the installed files
Use the launcher that manages the installation. Verification compares local files with the platform’s expected versions and replaces differences; it is less disruptive than reinstalling the entire game.
Epic Games Store
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and go to your Library.
- Open the game’s options menu and choose the management option that contains Verify.
- Allow the scan and any replacement download to finish, then restart the launcher and test the game from the Library.
Epic says verification checks for damaged or corrupted local files, repairs differences, and does not affect saved data. It can still require a download, so leave enough free disk space and do not interrupt the process.
EA app
- Open the EA app and find the game’s tile.
- Open the tile menu and choose Repair.
- Wait for the repair to complete before launching again.
EA’s guidance for games that will not load places Repair before more drastic measures. If the repair reports a locked or inaccessible file, close other launchers and background programs, restart the computer, and run the repair again.
Steam
Steam Support’s guidance for games that stop after “Preparing to Launch” points to verifying the game files. Open the game’s properties in your Steam Library and use the installed-files verification command; Steam’s label and menu placement can change with client updates. Test again only after the verification process and any download have completed.

When verification reports no problems
A successful scan rules out only a particular class of local-file mismatch. It does not prove that the account, publisher handoff, driver, permission, overlay, or operating system is correct. Continue with the relevant sections rather than repeating verification indefinitely.

Launchers retain web data, authentication state, and download metadata in caches. A damaged cache can block a game even when the installation is intact. Clear a cache only through the launcher’s own support procedure, then sign in again if requested.
Use a reversible test
- Close the game and every launcher involved.
- Use the platform’s documented cache-clear or recovery option. Do not delete arbitrary folders that merely contain a word such as “cache.”
- Reopen the launcher, allow it to rebuild its data, and launch from the Library.
- If the game starts, re-enable any temporarily disabled feature one at a time so you can identify the conflict.
Disable overlays and recording tools temporarily
Turn off in-game overlays, screen recorders, sharing utilities, performance widgets, and similar background tools for one test launch. EA warns that its in-game overlay can sometimes cause a game to crash. Rockstar Games also warns that overlays and recording or sharing software can interfere with communication between components.
Close the applications rather than merely minimizing them; some remain active in the notification area. Do not leave security software, overlays, or recording features disabled permanently. If the game launches with one feature off, update that feature or add a game-specific exception according to its vendor’s instructions, then test again.
Check for a stuck process
If the launcher says the game is running but no window appears, open Task Manager and look for the game and launcher processes. End only processes belonging to the failed launch, then restart the launcher. Avoid terminating unrelated Windows processes. A clean restart is safer than repeatedly clicking Play while an orphaned process remains active.

6. Check permissions, operating-system updates, drivers, and requirements
Once account, handoff, files, cache, and background software have been checked, look at system prerequisites.
Try administrator permission once
Some games cannot access required system resources until they receive administrator permission. Rockstar’s customer-support guidance states that certain titles, including its own, may need this permission. Use a one-time administrator launch only when the game or publisher support recommends it:
- Close the game and its launchers.
- Start the launcher, or the publisher launcher in a documented handoff, with Run as administrator.
- Launch the game once and record whether the result changes.
Do not permanently configure every game to run as administrator without a game-specific reason. Elevated permissions increase what the program can change and can create conflicts with another launcher running at normal privilege.
Install current operating-system and graphics-driver updates
Apply pending operating-system updates and the graphics-driver release recommended for your hardware. Restart afterward. If an update was installed immediately before the failure, note that fact for support; do not randomly downgrade drivers without a documented compatibility reason.
Compare the computer with the game’s requirements
Check the game’s official minimum and recommended requirements, supported operating systems, graphics features, storage space, and any platform-specific compatibility notes. A launcher can install a game on hardware that cannot run it reliably. Also verify that the installation drive has free space for updates and that the game is installed in a location the launcher can access.

Review security and controlled-folder settings
Security software can block a launcher, anti-cheat component, or game executable. Use the security product’s event history to see whether it quarantined or blocked a file, and follow the game or launcher publisher’s documented exception procedure. Do not download replacement executables from unofficial sites or disable protection broadly just to test a launch.
7. Match the symptom to the next branch

8. Reserve reinstalling for a documented last resort
Reinstallation takes time and can remove configuration data without fixing an account, service, driver, or launcher-handoff problem. Consider it only after verification or repair, cache testing, updates, and the relevant publisher instructions have failed.
- Check whether saves are synchronized or stored locally. Back up local saves only according to the game publisher’s instructions; do not assume every title stores them in the installation directory.
- Record the current installation path, launcher accounts, error text, and any custom launch options.
- Uninstall through the launcher that owns the installation, not by deleting the game folder manually.
- Restart the computer, update the launcher, and reinstall to a location with adequate free space.
- Launch from the supported Library path and allow all first-run components to finish installing.
If the launcher itself appears damaged, use its official reinstall procedure before reinstalling a large game. A launcher reinstall can reset sign-in state and settings, so have the correct account credentials available.

Contact the game publisher or the relevant launcher support team when the supported checks do not resolve the failure. Epic Games Store guidance may direct unresolved cases to hardware-manufacturer support when the evidence points to a system component; EA and Rockstar also provide publisher support routes.
Include:
- The exact game title and edition.
- The storefront and every publisher launcher involved.
- The account that owns the game, without sending a password or payment details.
- Your operating-system version and graphics hardware and driver version.
- The exact error text, code, or a description of what appears after Play.
- Whether the game appears in each required launcher’s Library.
- Whether you launched from the Library or a shortcut.
- The verification or repair result.
- Whether clearing cache, disabling overlays, closing background software, or using a one-time administrator launch changed the behavior.
- Any recent update, driver change, security-software alert, or hardware change.
State the steps in the order you tried them and attach screenshots or log files only through the support channel’s requested upload method. This lets support distinguish an entitlement problem from a damaged installation or a system-level crash without making you repeat every basic check.
