Start by writing down the complete error message or code in GOG GALAXY. The code points to the kind of failure: for example, E8 means insufficient disk space, while E4 means a disk-access error and E2 means Galaxy failed to finalize an update. Those problems need different fixes, so avoid changing network, security, or storage settings at random.

Use the steps below to separate a download that will not start or finish from an installation or update that fails after the files arrive. GOG’s error-code list and download troubleshooting guidance are the starting points for the specific branches.

1. Identify whether the download or the installation is failing

In Galaxy, note the full message and any code before retrying or changing a setting. Also note when the failure occurs: before the download begins, while files are transferring, during installation, or at the end of an update. The timing helps distinguish a connection or server response from a local storage problem or a failed finalization step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Take a screenshot or copy the wording exactly. A message such as “unable to connect” is not interchangeable with “not enough space,” and an error that appears at 99 percent may be an installation or dependency problem rather than a download problem. Record the game title, whether it is a new install or an update, and the drive selected in Galaxy. Those details make later support requests much more useful.

Use the code as a diagnosis, not as a generic label for “the game will not install.” GOG assigns separate meanings to its main download and installation codes:

Code GOG’s stated meaning
E1 The local game copy is corrupted.
E2 Galaxy failed to finalize the update; GOG’s E2 guidance identifies a dependency-installation failure at the end of installation.
E3 Galaxy could not connect to GOG.com servers.
E4 A disk-access error occurred during installation or update.
E5 The game was running during an update.
E6 There is no valid copy of the game owned.
E7 The game is no longer available.
E8 There is not enough free disk space.
E9 GOG.com servers returned an unknown error.

These definitions come from GOG GALAXY Error codes. Galaxy also lists E10 through E15, but those concern library operations such as importing, linking, adding, removing, or uninstalling games rather than the basic download and install failure covered here.

If Galaxy shows no code, record the wording and the stage where it stops; do not assume that a failure without a code is an E8, connection problem, or security-software issue. The absence of a code is a reason to gather better details, not a reason to apply every fix at once.

2. Check the destination and temporary folders for E4 or E8

E4 and E8 both involve storage, but they are not the same error. E8 points to insufficient free space. E4 points to a disk-access problem. Check both folders Galaxy uses before deciding whether a different drive or a folder change is appropriate.

  1. In Galaxy, open Settings, then Installing, updating.
  2. Review the Games installation folder and the Temporary game update folder. GOG allows both locations to be changed; its folder-location instructions explain the setting.
  3. Check the available space on the drives containing those folders. The temporary update location matters as well as the final game location, because Galaxy may use it while applying an update.
  4. For E4, confirm that the current computer account can access the selected folders and that the destination drive is available. If a configured location no longer exists or cannot be accessed, choose an accessible folder in Galaxy’s settings.
  5. Retry the affected operation after correcting the specific space or access problem.

Check the path letter and folder name carefully. A drive that was disconnected, renamed, or replaced can leave Galaxy pointing at a location that looks valid in settings but is not currently available. Likewise, a temporary folder on a nearly full second drive can block an update even when the final game drive has plenty of room.

There is no universal free-space buffer that applies to every game or update. The amount needed depends on the title and the update, so use the space requirement shown for the affected operation rather than relying on a blanket number. Adding a drive is only relevant if E8 is genuinely caused by insufficient capacity and there is no suitable existing destination; a new drive does not, by itself, resolve E4.

If you do need additional storage, verify your computer’s drive type, form factor, interface, and available connector before buying anything. Capacity alone is not a compatibility guarantee, and a new drive should be presented as a conditional solution for E8—not as a cure for an E4 access error.

3. Close the game before updating if Galaxy shows E5

E5 means the game was running during an update. Exit the game, then retry the update in Galaxy. If it is still open, Galaxy may not be able to replace or update the files it needs. Check for a remaining game process if the window has disappeared but the title is still active, then start the update again.

This code does not point to a download connection or a lack of disk space. Do not spend time changing the install folder for E5 unless Galaxy later reports a different code.

4. Recover from E2 with GOG’s dependency-folder procedure

Use this procedure only for Installation failed (E2) or Update failed (E2). GOG describes E2 as a failure to finalize an update because dependencies were not installed at the end. Its specific recovery instructions are in the E2 support article.

  1. Exit Galaxy using the cogwheel menu. Do not just close a game window while leaving Galaxy running.
  2. Open the Galaxy installation directory. GOG lists C:Program Files (x86)GOG GALAXY as the default location; if Galaxy is installed elsewhere, use that installation folder.
  3. Find the folder named Dependencies-Temp and rename it to Dependencies.
  4. If Windows asks whether to merge with an existing Dependencies folder, choose the merge option.
  5. Reopen Galaxy and check whether the affected installation or update now completes.

Rename only the folder specified by GOG, and preserve the spelling. Do not delete the existing folder or move unrelated Galaxy files. If Windows reports that Galaxy is still using the folder, confirm that Galaxy has been fully exited and try again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the folder procedure does not resolve E2, GOG’s alternative is to install the affected game with its offline installer and then wait for it to appear in Galaxy’s Installed view. Do not apply this dependency-folder change as a general fix for E1, E3, E4, E8, or another code; the procedure is documented for E2.

5. If Galaxy will not download the game, try an official alternative route

GOG offers two download approaches with different trade-offs. Galaxy is the convenient route when its download works: it supports pause and resume, automatic updates, and what GOG describes as protection against download corruption. The browser route supplies offline backup installers that can be run without Galaxy and kept for later. GOG does not establish that either route is universally faster or more reliable on every connection.

Method Useful when Important limitation
GOG GALAXY You want Galaxy to manage installation, pausing and resuming, and updates, or a browser download has the documented 403 problem. If Galaxy itself is the obstacle, a different route may be needed.
Browser offline backup installers You want a standalone installer, Galaxy cannot complete the download, or you want to retain setup files for later installation. Download every required installer part. GOG says missing files prevent installation; for checksum-corruption problems, it does not advise manual browser downloading because that route does not provide the same error protection.

Download the offline installers from your GOG account

  1. Sign in to your GOG account and open your library of purchased games.
  2. Select the game and choose its offline backup game installers. GOG’s purchased-items instructions describe downloading these files.
  3. Download all files required for that game, not just the first installer part. Keep the files together so the setup application can find the other parts.
  4. Run the setup application to install the game. If you want Galaxy to recognize it, follow GOG’s E2 guidance when that is the code you are addressing; otherwise, do not assume an offline installation will repair every kind of Galaxy error.

Large games may be split into several numbered installers or data files. Wait until every required part appears in your account’s download list, and compare the downloaded filenames with that list before launching setup. Missing one part is enough to stop installation; repeatedly running an incomplete set will not recreate the absent file.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Keep the installers in one folder while running the setup application, and retain them if you want a reusable backup. An offline installation does not require Galaxy to transfer the game files, but Galaxy recognition and ownership checks are separate matters. If the standalone setup succeeds yet Galaxy still reports an error, return to the code-specific branch instead of assuming the files are damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Handle a browser 403 without assuming every 403 has one cause

GOG documents a particular reason a browser download can return HTTP 403: the connection may use one IP address when reaching GOG’s site and a different IP address when reaching the file-hosting provider. For that documented situation, GOG recommends downloading through Galaxy, which uses a different authentication method. See GOG’s download-issues guidance.

This is one explanation for a 403, not proof that all 403 responses have the same cause. If Galaxy also fails, use the code or error text Galaxy provides and follow the matching branch rather than treating the browser response as a diagnosis of the installation problem. Switching repeatedly between browsers without noting the exact response is unlikely to clarify which stage is failing.

7. Check or repair a game that appears installed but will not update

If the game is listed as installed but files may be incomplete or damaged, use Galaxy’s Verify/repair command from the game’s installation-management controls. The command checks the local installation and can restore files that do not match the expected copy. Open the affected game in Galaxy, find its installation-management menu, and choose Verify/repair when that option is available.

Verification is a file-integrity step, not a universal answer to every error. It does not change account ownership, make an unavailable title available, create free disk space, or guarantee a connection to GOG’s servers. If verification itself fails, record the resulting code and continue with that code’s branch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Treat E1, E3, E6, E7, and E9 according to their stated causes

E1: the local copy is corrupted

E1 indicates that the local game copy is corrupted. If the failure happened while downloading, GOG recommends trying another download method when one fails. Galaxy is the route GOG describes as protecting files from download corruption; for a browser download, check whether every required installer file arrived and use Galaxy if the issue is checksum corruption. GOG specifically does not advise manual browser downloads for that checksum problem because they do not offer the same error protection.

Do not confuse a missing offline-installer part with a checksum-corruption diagnosis. Missing files require downloading the complete set; a damaged local copy calls for the supported alternate download method or verification where available.

E3: Galaxy cannot connect to GOG.com servers

E3 identifies a connection to GOG.com servers that failed. Retry later or follow the current guidance in GOG’s download troubleshooting article. The error definition does not establish that changing a particular network setting will fix it, so a specific network modification should not be treated as guaranteed.

When retrying, note whether the same title fails while another download succeeds. That observation can help support distinguish a broad service connection issue from a title-specific response, but it is not itself proof of either cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

E6 and E7: check ownership or availability

E6 means Galaxy cannot identify a valid owned copy; E7 means the game is no longer available. Check that you are signed into the account that owns the game and that the title remains available in your account. Reinstalling files will not correct an ownership or availability condition described by these codes.

Make sure you are not using a different GOG account in Galaxy than the one used to purchase the game. If the title is absent or unavailable after you confirm the account, use GOG Support rather than attempting repeated downloads.

E9: an unknown server error

E9 means GOG.com servers returned an unknown error. Retry later and consult GOG’s current support guidance if it continues. The code does not identify a specific local cause, so avoid treating it as proof of a disk or antivirus problem.

9. If the error remains, give GOG Support the useful details

If the code-matched steps fail, open the relevant GOG Support Center article or submit a support request. Include the exact code or message, the title affected, whether the failure is a download, installation, or update, and which relevant step you tried. State whether the game was being installed from Galaxy or from offline installers, and identify the configured games and temporary folders when the issue is storage-related.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Explain the sequence briefly: for example, “download reached the end, then E2 appeared,” or “browser returned 403 before any file began.” This is more actionable than saying only that the game will not install. If you changed a folder, mention the old and new locations and whether the drive was available at the time.

10. A quick decision path

  1. Find the code. Match E1 through E9 to GOG’s stated meaning before changing settings.
  2. See where it stops. A pre-download failure, transfer failure, installation failure, and final update failure are different stages.
  3. Check storage branches. For E8 inspect free capacity in both the games and temporary update locations; for E4 inspect access and whether the folders and drive are available.
  4. Use the narrow fix. Close the game for E5, use the dependency-folder procedure only for E2, and use Galaxy for the documented browser-403 or checksum-corruption scenarios.
  5. Use complete offline installers. Download every required part if Galaxy cannot complete the transfer.
  6. Escalate with evidence. Send GOG the exact message, code, title, stage, folders, and steps already attempted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between E8 and E4 in GOG Galaxy?

E8 means Galaxy reports insufficient free disk space. E4 means it encountered a disk-access error. Check free capacity in both the Games installation folder and Temporary game update folder for E8; for E4, confirm that the drive and folders exist and that your account can access them.

How much free space does a GOG game update need?

There is no single buffer that applies to every title. The required amount varies by game and update, and Galaxy may use temporary space while applying the update. Check the requirement shown for the affected operation and inspect both configured folder locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I fix every Galaxy error by renaming Dependencies-Temp?

No. GOG documents that folder procedure specifically for Installation failed (E2) or Update failed (E2), where dependency installation failed during finalization. Do not use it as a general fix for E1, E3, E4, E5, E8, or other codes.

Will offline installers fix a Galaxy account or server error?

Offline installers can provide an alternative file-transfer and installation route when Galaxy cannot download the game. They do not correct ownership or availability conditions such as E6 or E7, and they cannot repair a GOG server response such as E9.

Why does my browser show HTTP 403 while downloading from GOG?

GOG documents a case where the connection uses different IP addresses for GOG’s site and its file-hosting provider. For that documented situation, GOG recommends Galaxy because it uses a different authentication method. Not every 403 necessarily has the same cause.

What if an offline installer says a file is missing?

Return to the game’s offline backup installer list and download every required part. Keep all parts together before starting setup. GOG says missing installer files prevent installation; running the same incomplete set again will not supply the absent file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I retry an E3 or E9 error immediately?

You can retry later and follow GOG’s current support guidance. E3 identifies a failed connection to GOG.com servers, while E9 identifies an unknown server response. Neither code proves that a particular disk, antivirus, or network-setting change is the correct fix.

What information should I send GOG Support?

Provide the exact code or wording, game title, account context if ownership is involved, whether the problem is a download, installation, or update, the point at which it stops, configured installation and temporary folders when relevant, and the steps already attempted. Share system reports privately through support because they may contain personal information.

The Bottom Line

The fastest way to fix a GOG GALAXY download or installation failure is to follow the exact error code. Check both storage locations for E4 or E8, close the game for E5, use the dependency-folder recovery only for E2, and switch to complete offline installers when Galaxy’s download path is the obstacle. For E3, E6, E7, or E9, retry or verify the account and service status instead of applying unrelated storage fixes. If the matched steps fail, send GOG Support the precise code, stage, title, and troubleshooting history.
