On a supported Galaxy tablet, the first fix is Settings > Display > Taskbar: turn the switch on, then open an app or window and check the bottom edge. If the switch is missing or unavailable, check the tablet model, One UI software and launcher. If the switch is on but the bar vanishes only in one app, compare that app with another before treating the tablet as faulty. When the entire screen is slow or touch input fails, restart, update, test Safe mode and seek service if the problem remains.
Start with the Taskbar setting
Samsung describes the taskbar as a strip along the bottom of the screen that appears while an app or window is open and provides quick access to apps. On supported models, use this sequence:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Taskbar.
- Turn the switch on.
- If it was already on, turn it off once, turn it back on, open an app and look at the bottom edge again.
The bar may not be visible on the Settings screen itself because Samsung describes it as an in-app or windowed feature. Test it with a normal app open rather than judging the setting page alone.

Know what normal behavior looks like
The taskbar is not a permanent replacement for every navigation control. It is an app-access strip that appears in the context Samsung supports, and a full-screen app can change what is visible at the bottom of the display. Samsung’s current U.S. guidance also limits the taskbar to four pinned apps. Seeing four pinned shortcuts, rather than every installed app, is therefore normal. The number or appearance of other controls can vary with the tablet, One UI release and app.

After enabling the setting, test with an ordinary app such as Settings or Samsung Internet. If the bar appears there, the setting is working even if a video player, game or other full-screen app hides it.
Identify which failure you have
The right fix depends on whether the control is unavailable, the bar is hidden by an app context, or touch and system performance are failing more broadly.

Confirm support, model and software
Samsung’s current U.S. taskbar help lists Tab S8, Tab S9, Tab S10, Tab S11 and Tab A11+ families as examples of tablets with the feature. That list is not a guarantee for every regional variant, storage configuration or software release. Menu names and screen layouts can vary by device model, software version and app version.
Check the model number
- Open Settings.
- Tap About tablet (the exact label can vary).
- Record the model name and model number.
- Compare that information with the taskbar support information for your region and software release.
If Display > Taskbar does not exist after an update check, do not assume the setting is hidden behind a random menu. It may simply be unavailable on that model or build. A Samsung tablet sold in another market can also present different labels from the U.S. instructions.
Check the One UI version
- In Settings, open About tablet or Software information.
- Note the One UI version and Android version.
- Open Settings > Software update and choose Download and install if that option is offered.
Install an available official update, restart, and look for the Taskbar entry again. If the update screen says the software is current and the menu is still absent, eligibility or regional variation is more likely than a temporary glitch.
Fix a greyed-out Taskbar switch
A disabled-looking control can be caused by the active home launcher. In one Samsung Community case, a Tab S8+ owner found the Taskbar option greyed out while Nova Launcher was the default; switching back to One UI Home made the option available. That report is a troubleshooting experiment, not a universal Samsung rule for every model or One UI release.
Temporarily test One UI Home
- Open Settings.
- Use the search field for Default apps or open Apps > Choose default apps.
- Tap Home app.
- Select One UI Home.
- Return to Settings > Display and check whether Taskbar is selectable.
If the control becomes available, enable it and test the bar in an app. You can later test another launcher again, but note which launcher was active whenever the setting changed. If One UI Home does not change the control, restore your preferred launcher and continue with model and software checks rather than repeatedly switching launchers.
Changing the default launcher does not erase your files, but it can change the home-screen layout and available widgets. Treat it as a reversible diagnostic. Do not change the launcher, navigation mode and several other display settings simultaneously; doing so makes it difficult to identify which change mattered.

When the taskbar disappears only in certain views
Samsung’s description ties the taskbar to using an app or having a window open. A bar that disappears only in a particular app, video player or full-screen view may therefore be context-dependent.
Compare two apps
- Leave the app where the bar vanished.
- Open a different, ordinary app such as Settings or Samsung Internet.
- Check the bottom edge while that app is active.
- Return to the original app and note whether the behavior follows the app.
If the taskbar works elsewhere, report the behavior to the app developer or look for an in-app full-screen control. Do not reset the tablet for a problem isolated to one application.
Do not confuse the taskbar with the Navigation bar
Samsung separately notes that the Navigation bar can disappear in full-screen apps. The Navigation bar contains system navigation controls; the taskbar is the app-access strip. A full-screen app hiding navigation controls does not prove that the Taskbar setting is broken. Test from another app and verify the Taskbar switch before changing navigation settings.

If the bar is present but slow, intermittently absent or unresponsive, treat it as a temporary system or app-process problem first.
Close recent apps
- Open the Recents view using your current navigation method.
- Close recently used apps, especially the app in which the taskbar stopped responding.
- Open one app and test the taskbar before launching several others.
Background processes can affect responsiveness. Closing apps is a reversible test; it does not erase app data. If the bar becomes responsive after closing one particular app, note that app and check for its update rather than repeatedly changing tablet settings.
Restart normally
- Press and hold the tablet’s power/Side button.
- Choose Restart and wait for the lock screen.
- Unlock the tablet, open an app and test the taskbar.
A restart clears a stuck process without changing your taskbar preference. If the tablet will not display the power menu, use the force-restart procedure below.
Install available software updates
- Open Settings > Software update.
- Tap Download and install or the equivalent option shown on your model.
- Complete the update while the tablet has sufficient battery and a stable connection.
- Restart if prompted and retest in more than one app.
Samsung’s support guidance notes that menu names and key labels can vary. Follow the labels shown on your tablet rather than forcing a button sequence from a different model. If the update fails, note the error and available storage before trying again; do not interrupt an update by powering off the tablet.

A taskbar that does not react to taps can be an ordinary touch-screen problem. Isolate physical interference before changing system settings.

Remove possible screen interference
- Remove a case whose edge may press against the display.
- Temporarily remove or reposition a screen protector that is lifting, cracked or misaligned.
- Turn the screen off, then wipe it with a clean, dry, soft cloth.
- Dry your fingers and the display before testing again.
If touch works after removing a case or protector, the accessory was interfering with input. It is not evidence that a replacement tablet or stylus will restore the software taskbar. Refit an accessory only after confirming that it does not touch the active edge.
Test in Safe mode
Safe mode starts the tablet without downloaded apps. It is useful for distinguishing a third-party app conflict from a system or hardware problem. The exact entry method varies by Galaxy model, so use the on-screen power menu and your model’s Samsung instructions. After entering Safe mode, open an app and test the bottom edge.
- If the taskbar responds in Safe mode, a downloaded app is a plausible cause. Remove or disable recently installed or recently updated apps one at a time, restarting normally after each change.
- If the taskbar remains unresponsive in Safe mode, downloaded apps are less likely to be responsible. Continue with updates, diagnostics and support.
Keep track of which app you remove and test after each change. That gives you a way to restore the last change if the behavior does not improve. Safe mode itself does not prove that a particular app is defective; it only narrows the likely source.
Samsung also recommends optimizing the device as part of touchscreen troubleshooting. Use the optimization option available in your tablet’s Device care settings, then retest without opening a large group of apps.
Force-restart a frozen Galaxy tablet
Use a forced restart only when normal controls do not work. It does not replace a factory reset and is intended to recover a frozen device.
Button combinations are model-dependent
- Samsung’s current U.S. slow-or-unresponsive guidance says to hold Side and Volume down together for more than seven seconds until the tablet restarts.
- Samsung’s UK guidance for Galaxy Tab models describes holding Power and Volume down for more than seven seconds.
Side and Power may be different names for the same physical control, and combinations can differ by model. If neither sequence works, check the instructions for the exact model number rather than holding random buttons. Once the tablet restarts, test touch on the lock screen, then check the taskbar in an app.
A forced restart can close unsaved work in an app that has stopped responding. It does not normally remove personal files, but use it only after giving the normal restart a chance when the power menu is available.
Use diagnostics and decide when to seek service
Persistent failure after a normal restart, software update, case/protector check and Safe mode test points beyond a simple taskbar toggle.

Run Samsung Members diagnostics
If Samsung Members is installed and offers diagnostics on your tablet, run the available screen or touch tests. Record whether the test reports a hardware fault and note which apps were open when the taskbar failed. Diagnostic availability and names vary by model and region.
Also record whether the taskbar fails on the lock screen, in Settings, in Safe mode and in more than one ordinary app. A short video or screenshot can help show whether the bar is absent, visible but untappable, or replaced by full-screen controls.

- The tablet has visible screen damage or liquid exposure.
Give support the model number, One UI version, the exact path where the setting is missing, and the results of the launcher and Safe mode tests. This information is more useful than describing the bar simply as “gone.”
What not to do first
A taskbar-specific symptom does not justify destructive troubleshooting. The official taskbar guidance does not prescribe these as first-line fixes:
- Factory-resetting the tablet.
- Wiping a cache partition or repeatedly clearing caches.
- Buying a replacement tablet, stylus or repair part.
- Changing several launchers and navigation modes at once.
A factory reset erases personal data and settings, so reserve it for a broader recovery plan recommended by Samsung support after backups and less disruptive tests. Hardware accessories cannot restore a disabled software setting; a case or protector matters only when it physically interferes with touch.

Why did my Samsung tablet taskbar disappear?

Why is Taskbar greyed out on my Galaxy Tab?
Confirm that the model and software support the feature, then temporarily select One UI Home as the default launcher and check again. A Tab S8+ community report found that this resolved a greyed-out control with Nova Launcher, but it is not a guaranteed rule for every tablet.
Why does the taskbar vanish only in one app?
The app may be using full-screen mode or handling windows differently. Compare Settings or another ordinary app. If the taskbar works there, the tablet setting is probably functioning; look for the app’s full-screen control or contact its developer.
What if the taskbar appears but will not respond to taps?
Remove a case or screen protector that could touch the edge, clean and dry the display, close recent apps and restart. Then test Safe mode. If touch fails in Safe mode and elsewhere on the tablet, arrange Samsung diagnostics or service.
Will a factory reset fix a missing taskbar?
Do not use a factory reset as an early taskbar-specific fix. It erases personal data and settings, while the supported first steps are checking the toggle, model, launcher, software, touch interference and Safe mode. Consider a reset only in a broader recovery plan advised by Samsung after a backup.
Which buttons force-restart a frozen Galaxy tablet?
Samsung guidance commonly says to hold Side or Power together with Volume down for more than seven seconds. Names and combinations vary by model, so use instructions for your exact model number rather than guessing.
Should I buy a new tablet or stylus for this problem?

The Bottom Line
