If your Galaxy home screen keeps rearranging itself, first match the change to its trigger. A One UI 7 update or a transfer can alter the supported grid and leave blank spaces; rotation can realign icons; accidental touches can move or remove items. Choose the matching fix below, then use Lock Home screen layout to prevent touch-related changes. Menu names and available grids vary by Galaxy model, region and One UI version.
Identify what is changing and when
Do not start by resetting the phone. Note the first event after which the layout looked different. The timing usually tells you whether you are seeing a grid conversion, a transfer or restore result, a landscape arrangement, or an accidental edit.
| What you notice | Most relevant Samsung-documented explanation | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Blank spaces or a different number of columns and rows appeared after an update | One UI 7 revised the supported Home screen grids. An older arrangement can be adjusted to a supported grid. | Open Home screen settings and check the grid. |
| The layout changed while setting up a replacement phone or restoring data | A transfer or restore can alter grid settings and leave spaces where items were previously positioned. | Check the new phone’s grid and rebuild any missing placements. |
| Icons look different only after turning the phone sideways | Landscape mode can realign apps and widgets and restrict editing. | Return to portrait before moving or editing items. |
| Icons move, disappear or shift after touching an empty area or dragging | Accidental touches can remove or reposition Home screen items. | Enable Lock Home screen layout. |
| None of these triggers fits | Galaxy behavior and menu availability differ by model, region and software version. | Record your model, One UI version and the action immediately before the change. |
These patterns are starting points, not a complete diagnostic test. The same symptom can have more than one cause, so check the trigger before changing several settings at once.
Also distinguish a changed arrangement from a changed Home screen page. If icons moved to another panel, swipe through every panel before assuming they were deleted. If only one widget vanished, verify whether the widget is still available in the widget picker. A grid conversion can affect placement without removing the underlying app or widget.

Fix a grid change after a One UI 7 update
One UI 7 changed which Home screen grid sizes are supported. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance states: In One UI 7, only 4×6 and 5×6 Home screen grids are supported.
In this notation, the first number is the number of columns and the second is the number of rows. If your phone previously used 4×5 or 5×5, the update may adjust the arrangement, move items, or leave empty spaces while it fits the old layout into a supported grid.
That behavior does not by itself indicate a failing display, damaged touchscreen or a phone that needs replacement. It is a software layout conversion. The exact choices shown on your device can still differ because Samsung varies features by model, region and software version.
Select a supported Home screen grid
- Go to a clear area of the Home screen.
- Touch and hold an empty area until the Home screen editing view opens.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Home screen grid.
- Choose 4×6 or 5×6 when those options are offered on your One UI 7 device.
- Tap Done.
After choosing the grid, inspect every Home screen panel. A grid change can alter the position of icons and widgets even when the apps themselves are still installed. Move items only after the grid is set; otherwise, changing the grid again can require another round of placement.

This is especially useful when several pages contain folders and widgets. Set the grid first, then restore the broad structure—such as which apps belong on each panel—before fine-tuning individual positions.
Why blank spaces can remain
An older grid may have placed an item in a position that has no direct equivalent in the new arrangement. One UI 7 can therefore preserve the surrounding layout while leaving an empty cell. A blank cell is not evidence that an application was uninstalled. Open the app drawer to check whether the app is still present, then add it back to the desired Home screen panel if necessary.
Samsung Gulf describes this situation as resulting from a revision in grid support for One UI 7.
Treat the blank area as a placement issue first. Do not clear app data or perform a factory reset merely because the Home screen has empty cells.
If several empty cells appear in a row, check the grid before reinstalling multiple apps. Reinstalling an app changes its availability, not the grid coordinates that produced the empty space. Once the supported grid is selected, you can place the installed apps where you want them and decide whether to leave any cells intentionally empty.

Stop accidental movement with Lock Home screen layout
When the layout changes after ordinary handling rather than after an update or restore, use Samsung’s built-in lock. It prevents accidental movement or removal of Home screen items while leaving normal app use intact. It is a prevention setting, not a history or undo function: it will not restore a previous grid and it does not explain changes made by a system update or transfer.
Enable the lock from the Home screen
- Touch and hold an empty spot on the Home screen.
- Open the Home screen settings from the editing view.
- Turn on Lock Home screen layout.
On some Galaxy software versions, the same control is available at Settings > Display > Home screen. If you cannot find the setting in the long-press view, use that Display path or search Settings for “Lock Home screen layout.” A missing option can reflect the model, region or installed One UI version rather than a fault.
When to leave the lock off
Keep the lock off while you are deliberately arranging a new grid, adding widgets, creating folders or moving icons between panels. Turn it on after the arrangement is stable. If an item still changes position while the lock is enabled, look for a system event or rotation trigger instead of repeatedly toggling the lock.
The lock applies to Home screen editing actions, so it is most useful after you have finished organizing. It does not freeze the phone’s orientation, prevent software updates, or guarantee that a transfer will reproduce the previous phone’s exact coordinates.

Fix changes that happen when you rotate the phone
Galaxy Home screens can use a landscape arrangement. Samsung notes that turning the phone sideways can realign apps and widgets, and that editing is restricted in landscape mode. This can look like the layout is changing when the phone is actually switching between portrait and landscape presentations.
Move or edit items in portrait mode
- Rotate the phone upright so the Home screen is in portrait orientation.
- Touch and hold the item you want to move or edit.
- Make the change while the phone remains in portrait.
- Return to landscape only after finishing the edit.
If the arrangement changes only after rotation, temporarily disable automatic rotation from Quick settings and use the phone in portrait while you reorganize it. The exact Quick settings label can vary, but it is normally Auto rotate, Portrait or Landscape. Re-enable rotation afterward if you want the Home screen to respond to orientation.
Check the Home screen landscape option
Some Galaxy versions expose a Home screen setting for allowing landscape mode. Open the Home screen editing view, enter its settings and review the landscape-related option if it is present. Availability and wording differ by device. Disabling landscape Home screen behavior removes the portrait/landscape presentation switch; it does not repair a grid that was changed by One UI 7.

Test the result in both orientations before moving more items. If the portrait arrangement stays stable but the sideways view differs, that points to orientation behavior rather than random movement. Make edits only in portrait, where Samsung says Home screen editing is available without the landscape restriction.

If the problem began while setting up a replacement Galaxy, importing a backup or restoring transferred data, compare the new phone with the old phone’s grid before manually rebuilding everything. Samsung explains that transferred apps and data can leave empty spaces where apps or widgets were previously positioned. Its One UI 7 guidance also notes that a restore can alter prior grid settings.
Use this recovery sequence
- Finish the transfer or restore process and restart the phone once if setup is still completing.
- Open the Home screen editing view and check Home screen grid.
- Select the grid you intend to use from the choices available on that model.
- Check the app drawer to confirm that an apparently missing app is installed.
- Add needed apps back to the correct panel, then recreate folders and widgets.
- When the arrangement is correct, enable Lock Home screen layout.
A restore may reproduce app and data availability without reproducing every pixel position from the previous phone. Empty cells therefore do not prove that the transfer failed. They indicate that the current grid and the saved placements do not match exactly.
Do not change the grid repeatedly while the transfer is still running. Let setup finish, select one grid, and then rebuild the panels. Otherwise, you may not be able to tell whether a later shift came from the restore process or from another manual grid change.
What to do when icons or widgets still move
Work through the causes in a controlled order so you can tell which change solved the problem:
- Check timing: write down whether the last change followed an update, restore, rotation or touch.
- Set the grid once: do not move dozens of items before selecting the intended grid.
- Use portrait for editing: landscape can present a different arrangement and limit editing.
- Enable the lock: this blocks accidental dragging and removal after you finish arranging.
- Observe for a while: if the layout changes without rotation, touching or a system event, note exactly which panel and item are affected.
Do not treat every rearrangement as the same failure. A stable but unfamiliar layout after an update needs grid selection; a layout that changes only when sideways needs an orientation setting; movement after handling needs the lock. These fixes address different mechanisms.
If only one panel is affected, compare it with the other panels. If all panels show a new row or column pattern, the grid is the stronger suspect. If the same icons shift only when the phone is turned, test rotation before changing the grid again. Recording these distinctions makes device-specific support more productive.

Get model-specific instructions when menu paths do not match
There is no single universal Galaxy menu path. Samsung states that software behavior and settings can vary by model, region and software version. Before following a more specific set of instructions, collect:
- The complete Galaxy model name, including any carrier or regional variant.
- The installed One UI version and Android version shown in Settings > About phone > Software information, where those labels are available.
- The country or region in which the phone is being used.
- Whether the change followed a software update, Smart Switch transfer, backup restore, rotation or accidental touch.
- Whether the symptom is a blank cell, a different row/column count, movement to another panel, or a missing widget.
Include these details when asking Samsung support or a technician for help. They prevent advice for a different One UI release from sending you to controls your phone does not have.
Common mistakes that make the problem harder to solve
Resetting before checking the grid
A factory reset erases personal data and does not change the fact that One UI 7 supports only the grids offered by the device. Check the Home screen grid first.
Rearranging in landscape
Landscape can realign items and restrict editing. Move icons and widgets in portrait so you are not trying to correct one orientation while changing another.
Expecting the lock to undo an update
Lock Home screen layout prevents future accidental edits. It does not reverse a grid conversion, restore an older arrangement or recover a layout altered during transfer.
Assuming an empty cell means an app was deleted
Updates and restores can leave spaces while preserving the app in the app drawer. Verify installation before reinstalling or clearing anything.
Using a universal menu path
Instructions copied from another Galaxy may show different labels or omit a setting entirely. Model, region and One UI version determine which grid choices and landscape controls appear, so treat a different menu as a compatibility clue rather than proof that the feature is broken.

A compact decision path
- Changed immediately after One UI 7 update? Open Home screen settings and choose an available supported grid, such as 4×6 or 5×6 where offered.
- Changed during setup, transfer or restore? Check the resulting grid, verify apps in the app drawer and place items again.
- Changed only when the phone is sideways? Return to portrait for editing and review landscape or auto-rotate behavior.
- Changed after handling the phone? Enable Lock Home screen layout.
- Still unexplained? Gather the model, region, One UI version and immediate trigger before seeking device-specific support.
The official Samsung guidance does not provide an incidence rate for this behavior, so there is no reliable percentage to use for judging how common your case is. The grid dimensions are product settings, not statistics.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my Galaxy home screen change after a One UI 7 update?
Samsung says One UI 7 supports 4×6 and 5×6 Home screen grids in its cited guidance. If the phone used an earlier 4×5 or 5×5 arrangement, the update may adjust item positions or leave blank cells while converting to a supported grid.
Will Lock Home screen layout restore my old arrangement?
No. The lock prevents accidental movement or removal after you finish arranging the screen. It does not undo an update, restore an earlier grid, or reverse changes caused by a transfer or restore.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why can’t I move an icon or widget in landscape mode?
Samsung says landscape can realign apps and widgets and restrict Home screen editing. Rotate the phone to portrait before moving or editing items, and review the landscape or auto-rotate setting if the layout changes only when sideways.
Can a Smart Switch transfer leave blank spaces?
Yes. Samsung explains that transferred apps and data can leave spaces where apps or widgets were positioned on the previous phone. Check the current grid, verify apps in the app drawer, and place items again after setup finishes.
What should I do if the menu names do not match these steps?
Galaxy settings vary by model, region and One UI version. Record the complete model, region, One UI and Android versions, plus whether the change followed an update, restore, rotation or touch, then use those details for device-specific support.
Does an empty Home screen cell mean the app was uninstalled?
Not necessarily. A grid conversion or restore can preserve the app while changing its placement. Check the app drawer first, then add the installed app back to the desired panel.
The Bottom Line
Match the symptom to its trigger: select a supported grid after an update, rebuild placements after a transfer, edit in portrait when rotation is involved, and enable Lock Home screen layout to stop accidental changes. If the controls differ, use your exact Galaxy model, region and One UI version to get the correct path.
