The fix depends on which name Fortnite is showing. PlayStation and Xbox display your console account name (PSN ID or Xbox gamertag), so changing your Epic Games display name will not replace it. Nintendo Switch displays your Epic Games display name. A stale Linked accounts page on the Epic website is a separate synchronization issue. Identify the platform and the location of the old name first, then use the matching remedy: change the console name, wait for synchronization, relink the same account, or restart Fortnite.
First, identify which name is supposed to appear
Fortnite can use two different identities. Your Epic Games display name belongs to your Epic account. Your PlayStation Network ID or Xbox gamertag belongs to the console platform account. The platform determines which one appears to other players.

Epic Games Player Support explains that changing an Epic display name does not affect PlayStation or Xbox gamertags, so the in-game name can differ by console. If the old name appears only on PlayStation or Xbox, edit the platform identity rather than repeating the Epic-account change.

Fix an old name on PlayStation or Xbox
1. Decide whether you want to change the console identity or the Epic identity
Look at the exact location of the old text. If your lobby, party list, or match feed shows a PSN ID or Xbox gamertag, Fortnite is following the platform account. Editing Epic Account settings > Display name cannot overwrite that console value.

If your goal is to change what other players see while you play on PlayStation, change the PlayStation Network name. On Xbox, change the Xbox gamertag through the Microsoft/Xbox account controls. The available menus and any platform-specific limits are controlled by those services, not by Epic.
2. Sign in to the same console account that is linked to Fortnite
Before making a platform-name change, confirm that the console profile currently launching Fortnite is the one connected to the intended Epic account. A different console profile can make a successful name change appear ineffective because Fortnite is still using another identity.
- Close Fortnite and note the console profile currently active.
- Check the Epic account connected to that profile.
- Change the name on that exact PlayStation or Xbox account.
- Sign back into Fortnite and inspect the lobby and a match to confirm which identity is displayed.
3. Allow the Epic website to catch up
After a PSN or Xbox name change, Epic says the new value may not appear immediately on the Epic account’s Linked accounts page. That delay does not mean the console change failed. Give the account time to synchronize before altering links.

4. Refresh the Linked accounts page immediately, if necessary
If you need the website to show the new console name right away, Epic documents unlinking and then relinking that same console account. Use the Epic account’s Linked accounts area, select the affected platform, unlink it, and then connect the identical PlayStation or Xbox account again.

Read the warning before confirming. Epic says unlinking can affect access to information stored on the Epic account, and account-link restrictions can apply. Do not proceed until you have verified that you are signed into the correct Epic account and that you can sign back into the same console account. Never unlink a different profile merely because its name looks similar.
- Open the Epic Games account page and sign in to the account that Fortnite uses.
- Open Linked accounts and identify the PlayStation or Xbox connection.
- Confirm the platform account name and account ownership.
- Read the unlink warning and consider whether any account-link restriction could affect you.
- Unlink only that same console account.
- Reconnect the same account, then reopen Linked accounts to check the displayed name.
If you cannot confidently identify the correct Epic account or console profile, stop at the waiting step and contact Epic support rather than experimenting with multiple unlink operations.
Fix a stale Fortnite name on Nintendo Switch
Switch uses the Epic Games display name, not a separate Nintendo console gamertag for Fortnite’s player identity. If you changed the Epic name and it is correct during play but the lobby still shows the previous value, refresh the Fortnite session.

Restart Fortnite first
- Exit Fortnite completely rather than leaving it suspended.
- Launch Fortnite again.
- Wait for the lobby to load and check the displayed name.
Epic’s support guidance specifically recommends restarting the Fortnite application when a changed name appears correctly in-game but not in the lobby.

Restart the Switch if the application refresh did not work
- Hold the Switch Power button for at least three seconds.
- Choose Power Options, then Restart.
- After the console restarts, open Fortnite and check the lobby again.
This clears the suspended application state without changing your Epic account. Do not delete saved data or unlink accounts as a first response to a display-only problem.
Change the Epic Games display name when the field is unavailable
Verify the account email
Epic requires a verified email address before you can change the display name. Sign in to the Epic account used by Fortnite and complete email verification if the account is not verified. If you are signed into a different Epic account, a successful change there will not affect the account linked to your console.
Open the Display name setting
- Sign in to your Epic Games account.
- Open Account settings.
- Locate the Display name field.
- Enter the new name and save the change, following any on-screen confirmation.
Check the two-week cooldown
Epic allows a display-name change once every two weeks. A lock beside the Display name field means the cooldown is still active. Select the information icon next to the locked field to see when the previous change was made, then wait until the two-week interval has elapsed.
Changing your PlayStation ID or Xbox gamertag is a separate action and does not reset or bypass this Epic cooldown. Likewise, restarting Fortnite cannot unlock the field; it only refreshes a name that has already been changed.

Epic’s support guidance does not promise a fixed number of minutes or hours for Linked accounts synchronization. Treat the website delay as a propagation issue, not proof that your console-name change was rejected. The relink procedure is the documented immediate-refresh option, but it carries the account-link cautions described above.
Protect your Fortnite progress while troubleshooting
Fortnite progress, purchases, and content are stored on the Epic account linked to the console. Changing a console display name does not erase that data. The risk comes from working on the wrong account or unlinking incorrectly, not from the name text itself.
- Verify the Epic account email or sign-in method before changing links.
- Confirm the exact PlayStation or Xbox profile currently connected.
- Use the same console account when relinking; do not substitute a new profile.
- Keep the unlink warning visible until you understand its effect on account-stored information.
- Prefer waiting or restarting before unlinking when the only symptom is a stale website or lobby label.
Common mistakes and the right correction
Changing the Epic name while expecting a PlayStation or Xbox name to change
This is the most common mismatch. On those consoles, the name other players see is the platform identity. Change the PSN ID or Xbox gamertag instead; an Epic display-name edit cannot replace it.
Assuming a stale Linked accounts page means the account is broken
Epic explicitly notes that console-name updates may take time to reach the Linked accounts page. Wait for synchronization, or use the documented same-account unlink-and-relink process if an immediate website update is essential.

Changing the name repeatedly during the cooldown
A locked Display name field is expected during Epic’s two-week interval. The information icon shows the last change. Waiting is the only supported way to regain the field.
Leaving Fortnite suspended on Switch
A suspended application can retain the old lobby state even after the account name is correct in play. Exit and restart Fortnite, then restart the Switch with the Power button if the old lobby label remains.
Unlinking before checking which Epic account is active
Unlinking the wrong connection can affect access to Epic-account information and may trigger account-link restrictions. Confirm the account and platform profile first; if anything is unclear, do not unlink.

- Where is the old name? Record whether it appears in the match, lobby, console profile, or Epic Linked accounts page.
- Which platform? On PlayStation or Xbox, expect the console identity. On Switch, expect the Epic display name.
- What did you actually change? Match the attempted change to the identity Fortnite uses on that platform.
- Is the Epic field locked? Verify the email and inspect the information icon for the two-week cooldown date.
- Is only the website stale? Wait for synchronization; relink the same account only after reading the warning.
- Is only the Switch lobby stale? Restart Fortnite, then restart the Switch.
- Is the account uncertain? Stop and verify ownership before unlinking or relinking anything.
When to contact Epic or platform support
Contact Epic support after you have identified the correct identity and completed the applicable refresh step, especially if the name remains wrong across multiple fresh sessions. Include the platform, the exact screen showing the old value, whether the new name appears during a match, and whether the Epic Display name field is locked. For a PSN ID or Xbox gamertag problem, platform support may be the appropriate first contact because the console service owns that identity.
Do not send passwords or security codes. Support should be able to investigate the account state from the platform and Epic account details without asking you to disclose credentials.
