Stop forcing the phone. First remove the case or hinge cover, identify the exact model, and observe whether the hinge is merely stiff or is catching, grinding, bent, or worsening. Some movement, sounds, and slight fold-area curvature are normal on particular models, but a changed or obstructed hinge needs a model-specific assessment from the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider.
What to do first
- Stop applying force. Do not push past the phone’s natural stopping point, bend it beyond its normal open position, pry into the hinge, scrape it, blow into it, or add liquid or lubricant. Excess pressure can damage the hinge, frame, display, or internal cables.
- Close the phone only as far as it moves normally. If it catches, grinds, twists, or suddenly becomes harder to move, stop testing it. Repeated opening and closing can turn a small obstruction or alignment problem into display damage.
- Remove external accessories. Take off the case, hinge cover, adhesive bumper, or protective film installed by a third party. Open the phone carefully once more and compare the movement. Do not remove the factory-installed inner-screen protector; it is not a troubleshooting accessory.
- Record the model and symptom. Note the manufacturer, model number, when the problem started, whether it followed a drop or liquid exposure, and whether the change was sudden or gradual. Hinge tolerances and normal sounds differ by generation.
- Arrange service if the problem remains. Use the manufacturer’s support channel or an authorized repair provider for a model-specific inspection. Warranty coverage, prices, parts, and turnaround depend on the country, model, and inspection.
These checks distinguish an accessory interference problem from a hinge that needs service without asking you to perform an unsafe mechanical repair.
Why a foldable phone may not open completely flat
A foldable phone’s hinge is a precision mechanism with clearances, moving parts, magnets, cables, and a flexible display. A small amount of movement or an audible click can therefore be part of the design. The same symptom can also indicate debris, a displaced accessory, impact damage, hinge wear, frame distortion, or a display beginning to lift. You cannot reliably identify the cause by forcing the phone through its range.

Normal behavior is model-specific
Samsung’s current Flex Hinge guidance, dated July 24, 2026, covers the listed Galaxy Z Fold5, Fold6, Fold7, Fold8, Fold8 Ultra, Flip5, Flip6, Flip7, and Flip8 models. It explains that the hinge contains many small parts and designed clearances, so slight movement may occur. It also says that subtle curvature visible in the folding area under light can result from the design and is not, by itself, proof of a defect. This guidance applies only to the models listed on that page: Samsung’s Flex Hinge guidance.

Samsung’s older guidance for the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4, dated August 30, 2022, says some initial stiffness and minor operating sounds can occur. It also gives a model-specific fully open angle of 178.5–181.5 degrees, measured from the main screen. Samsung warns that movement beyond that range can strain or damage the device. Do not treat 178.5–181.5 degrees as a universal tolerance for newer foldables or another manufacturer’s phone: Samsung’s Fold4/Flip4 hinge guidance.
Signs that are not safe to dismiss
- The phone stops noticeably short of its previous open position.
- The hinge catches at one point, feels gritty, or requires uneven pressure.
- A grinding, cracking, or scraping sound appears or becomes louder.
- The two halves no longer meet evenly when closed, or the frame looks bent.
- The inner display shows a new bright line, black area, flicker, touch failure, crease change, or lifting edge.
- The problem began immediately after a drop, twist, pressure in a pocket or bag, or liquid exposure.
- The hinge movement is getting worse over days or weeks.
A slight sound or movement that has always been present may be normal for the model; a new or worsening change deserves service.
Safe diagnosis without damaging the hinge
1. Identify the exact model
Find the model name in Settings → About phone, on the original purchase record, or on the device label. Record the model number, not just a family name such as “Fold” or “Flip.” Foldable designs change between generations, and the manufacturer’s published angle or behavior for one model should not be applied to another.

2. Establish what changed
Think back to the last time the phone opened normally. A gradual increase in resistance points to a different set of possibilities than a sudden stop after impact. If you have a video of the phone opening before the issue, keep it for the service technician. Do not create a new “before and after” test by repeatedly cycling a damaged hinge.
3. Remove only external accessories
Open the phone carefully after removing the case and any hinge-cover attachment. Samsung specifically notes that a third-party protective cover or film around the hinge can change the operating angle on the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4. If the phone returns to its usual movement without the accessory, replace or reposition the accessory rather than forcing the hinge. The accessory may be incompatible, warped, installed off-center, or trapping grit.
Leave the phone’s factory inner-screen protector in place. Peeling it can damage the flexible display and does not repair a hinge.

4. Inspect visually, without probing
Under good light, look for a lifted screen edge, a gap between the frame and display, a bent hinge cover, missing screws or trim, foreign material at the seam, or an uneven closing line. Do not insert a card, needle, pick, brush, compressed-air nozzle, or other object into the hinge. The cited manufacturer guidance does not prescribe probing or blowing out the hinge, and pressure or static can worsen the fault.

With accessories removed, move the phone only through the range it reaches without unusual resistance. Compare both sides of the motion: does it begin smoothly and catch near open, or is it stiff throughout? Stop immediately if the hinge grinds, the display changes, the frame twists, or the phone needs more pressure than before. The purpose is observation, not a stress test.

For the Fold4 and Flip4, an angle just outside the stated range is not a reason to force the phone into position. Samsung’s warning is about the complete open position and the risk of excessive force, not a recommendation to measure or adjust the hinge yourself.

What not to try
- Do not force it flat. Samsung warns that applying excessive force when the product is opened beyond 180 degrees can damage it. This translated guidance is from the July 24, 2026 Flex Hinge page and is limited to the models covered there.
- Do not pry into the hinge. A pick, pin, SIM tool, toothpick, or card can damage seals, hinge components, or display cables and can push debris deeper.
- Do not use liquids or lubricants. Oil, alcohol, water, and household sprays can migrate into the display or electronics and can attack adhesives.
- Do not use compressed air. Air pressure can drive particles into the mechanism or lift a flexible display layer.
- Do not remove the inner-screen protector. It is part of the display assembly’s protection, not a removable hinge cover.
- Do not repeatedly fold a damaged phone “to loosen it.” Cycling cannot safely correct a bent frame, displaced hinge, or failing display.
- Do not use the Fold4/Flip4 angle as a measuring target for another device. The 178.5–181.5-degree figure is a Samsung specification for those two 2022 models only.
When to stop using the phone and seek repair
Close the phone only if it can close without pressure and the display remains normal. If closing it causes the screen to buckle, separate, flicker, or contact the frame unevenly, leave it in the safer position and contact support. Back up important data while the phone still works, using the manufacturer’s normal cloud or computer backup process; do not delay service by attempting a repair.
Seek prompt assessment for these symptoms
- New grinding, cracking, or repeated clicking.
- A hinge that catches at the same point or will not reach its previous position.
- Visible frame, hinge-cover, or display deformation.
- Screen lifting, a new crease or bright line, dead touch areas, flicker, or black patches.
- Any change after impact, crushing pressure, or liquid exposure.
If the phone is hot, smells unusual, swells, or shows battery damage, stop charging and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions before transport.

Ask the provider to document whether the fault is accessory interference, hinge alignment, frame damage, display damage, or contamination. “It does not open flat” is a symptom, not a confirmed diagnosis.

What Samsung’s self-repair announcement does—and does not—cover
Samsung Electronics America announced on January 23, 2024 that its US self-repair program expanded to include the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5, with genuine parts, tools, and repair guides. The listed phone categories include display assemblies, back glass, charging ports, speakers, SIM trays, and side and volume keys. The announcement does not say that a hinge part or hinge-repair procedure is available. Read the announcement at Samsung Newsroom US.
That program announcement also describes Samsung-certified professionals handling in-warranty and out-of-warranty repairs. Availability and terms can change by country, model, and date, so check the current local repair page before ordering parts or opening the phone. Do not infer that a display-assembly procedure is a safe substitute for hinge repair.
How to prepare for service
- Write down the exact model number, purchase date, region, and warranty or protection-plan status.
- Describe the symptom precisely: open angle, catching point, sounds, accessory test, and whether the issue is worsening.
- List any drop, pressure, or liquid event, even if the exterior looks undamaged.
- Back up data and remove accounts or security locks only when the service provider’s instructions require it. Keep proof of purchase if requested.
- Photograph the phone’s exterior and screen condition before handing it over.
- Ask whether the inspection will include the hinge, frame, flexible display, and accessory interference—not just a software reset.
- Request the diagnosis, parts being replaced, expected warranty on the repair, and any charge if you decline the work.
Repair cost, turnaround, warranty outcome, and universal hinge-part availability are not established by the manufacturer pages cited here; they must be confirmed for your location and device.
