Start with Airplane mode, the Wi-Fi name and password, and whether another device can use the same network. Then restart the tablet and networking equipment. If the tablet connects to a phone hotspot but not your home Wi-Fi, focus on the home network; if it fails on both, check the tablet’s settings and software before considering a factory reset.
Fire tablet menus can differ by model generation and Fire OS version. Use the instructions for your specific tablet if a label or path below does not match your screen.
First identify whether the problem is the tablet or the network
“Won’t connect to Wi-Fi” can describe several different problems: the tablet may not see a network, may reject its password, may join but have no internet, or may be blocked from changing wireless settings. The fastest way to narrow it down is to check another device on the same Wi-Fi, then—if needed—try the tablet on a phone hotspot.

- Other devices also cannot use the home Wi-Fi: troubleshoot the modem, router, or internet service first.
- Other devices work, but the tablet does not: check the tablet’s wireless settings, saved credentials, signal, and profile controls.
- The tablet works on a phone hotspot but not at home: the home network or its configuration is the more likely direction to investigate. This result does not by itself prove that the router needs replacement.
- The tablet fails on both the home network and a hotspot: restart it, reset its network settings, and check for a software update before escalating.
These are diagnostic clues, not guarantees. They help choose the next check without assuming a particular component has failed. If only one network is affected, start by looking at that network. If the tablet cannot connect to any network you can test, focus on the tablet-side steps and consider support if they do not help.

Also distinguish “can’t join Wi-Fi” from “joined Wi-Fi, no internet.” In the first case, the tablet may not detect the network or may not accept the credentials. In the second, it may be associated with the router or public hotspot while the network itself has no internet access, or while a required sign-in is unfinished. That difference helps avoid repeating a password reset when the actual next step is to check the network or complete a sign-in.
Check the basic Wi-Fi settings and connection
Turn off Airplane mode and confirm the network
- Open the tablet’s quick settings or Settings and make sure Airplane mode is off.
- Open Wi-Fi settings and select the intended network name. Check the exact name: nearby networks can have similar names.
- Enter the password again rather than relying on an old saved credential. Check capitalization and any characters that are easy to confuse.
- Try another phone, laptop, or tablet on the same Wi-Fi. If none can connect, go to the network restart steps below; if other devices work, continue with the Fire tablet checks.
Do not assume that a network with a familiar name is the correct one. A neighbor’s network, guest network, or similarly named band can appear in the scan list. Select the network you intend to use and make sure the password belongs to that network. If you are unsure whether a credential is current, confirm it with the person who manages the router rather than repeatedly trying guesses.
If the tablet reports that it is connected but apps cannot reach the internet, note whether the same thing happens on other devices. A Wi-Fi connection means the tablet has joined the wireless network; it does not necessarily mean that the network has a working internet connection. If several devices have the same problem, the issue is more likely with the home network or internet service than with the Fire tablet alone.
Test close to the router
Bring the tablet near the router temporarily and try again. Distance, walls, and nearby interference can weaken the signal. Amazon’s guidance identifies devices such as microwaves and baby monitors as possible sources of interference; move the tablet away from them while testing. If the network is crowded, temporarily disconnect other devices and retry.
This is a comparison test, not a reason to permanently move the router or buy a range extender. If the tablet connects when it is close to the router but not from the child’s usual location, that points toward signal conditions or interference in that location. If it still cannot join beside the router, continue with the settings and restart checks.
For a home using 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, extenders, or mesh equipment, Amazon advises keeping the network name, security type, and password consistent across those parts of the network for seamless roaming. Do not change router security settings just to experiment: router settings and available options vary, and an unsupported change can create a separate connectivity problem.
Restart the tablet, modem, and router
Restart the Fire tablet
- Press and hold the tablet’s power button for up to three seconds, until the shutdown request appears.
- Select OK to shut down.
- Turn the tablet back on, open Wi-Fi settings, and try connecting again.
The shutdown prompt may look different on some models. If holding the button does not show the prompt, use the matching instructions for that tablet generation rather than guessing at another button combination. Restarting is a sensible early step because it does not require changing saved networks or erasing the tablet.

Restart the home network in order
- Unplug the modem and router for several minutes.
- Reconnect the modem first. Wait for it to finish starting and reconnect to the internet.
- Reconnect the router and wait for it to finish starting.
- Once both devices have restarted, restart other devices as needed. Wait two minutes before retrying the tablet’s Wi-Fi connection.
If the modem and router are a combined unit, unplug and reconnect that unit, then give it time to finish starting before testing. If several devices remain offline after the restart, contact the internet service provider; the tablet is unlikely to be the only problem in that case.
Keep the order in mind: reconnect the modem before the router, and allow each to finish starting rather than testing immediately after plugging it in. When several devices are affected, check them again after the equipment is back online. If they still cannot use the connection, an ISP can help determine whether service or network equipment is the issue.
Connect to a hidden Wi-Fi network
A hidden network does not appear in the ordinary Wi-Fi scan list, so it must be added manually. Menu wording varies by Fire OS version, but the general sequence is:
- Open Wi-Fi settings and choose Add Network.
- Enter the network name exactly as configured on the router.
- Enter the network password.
- Open Advanced and set the hidden-network option to Yes.
- Save or connect, then check whether the tablet reports internet access.
If the tablet does not show these labels, consult the guide for its model and software version. A spelling or capitalization mismatch in the network name can prevent a manually added hidden network from connecting. Take care to enter the network name, also called its SSID, exactly as it is configured; it is separate from the password.
Only use this manual-add process when the network is intentionally hidden and you know its name and password. If the network normally appears in the list, first check that you are selecting the right entry rather than creating a second entry with guessed details.
Check caregiver controls and the child’s profile
Fire Tablet parental controls can restrict wireless connectivity. If Wi-Fi is switched off and the child cannot change it, or relevant settings appear unavailable, check the caregiver controls and the profile context rather than assuming the tablet hardware is broken. The caregiver may need to review or change the restriction.
This is a settings issue, not evidence that an Amazon Kids+ subscription is required for Wi-Fi. The relevant check is whether parental controls have limited wireless access on the tablet. If the child’s profile prevents access to a setting, review it from the caregiver’s control context and avoid trying to work around an intentional restriction by resetting the device.

Use a phone hotspot to narrow down the cause
A temporary connection to a smartphone’s personal hotspot is a useful comparison when the tablet still cannot join the home Wi-Fi. Use the phone’s hotspot settings to turn it on, then select that hotspot from the tablet’s Wi-Fi list and enter the hotspot password.

- If the tablet connects and can access the internet through the hotspot: the home network or its configuration is the more likely source of the problem. Recheck the home Wi-Fi credentials, signal, interference, and network setup.
- If the tablet cannot connect to the hotspot either: continue with the tablet-side steps: restart, reset network settings, and check for software updates.
A hotspot test can use mobile data, and carrier terms or data limits may apply. Turn the hotspot off when the test is complete. If multiple devices are unable to use the home network, contact the ISP rather than treating the hotspot result as a reason to buy a router.
Use the result as a way to sort the problem, not as a definitive hardware diagnosis. A successful hotspot connection points toward the home network, but it does not identify a failed router part or prove that the router needs replacement. A failed hotspot test is a reason to continue checking the tablet, but if you are uncertain about hotspot settings or mobile-data use, you can skip the test and proceed with the other steps.
Reset network settings and check for updates
Reset the saved network settings
Use this later in the troubleshooting process, after checking credentials, signal, restarts, and caregiver restrictions. Amazon’s support instructions give different paths for different Fire tablet guidance:
- Amazon Kids-specific instructions: Settings > System > Reset Options > Reset Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
- General Fire Tablet instructions: Settings > Connected Devices > Network Settings Reset.
The difference reflects model and software variation. Follow the path that matches your tablet; if neither appears, use the support guidance for its generation instead of selecting an unrelated reset option. After the network reset, reconnect to Wi-Fi and enter the credentials again.
A network-settings reset is not the same as a factory reset. It targets network settings, while a factory reset restores the tablet to factory defaults. Because menu names and reset options differ, pause if the screen does not match the instructions for your model; do not choose a broader reset just because the listed network option is missing.
Install available software updates
Check the tablet’s system settings for an update available to that model, and install it if one is offered. Menu labels and update availability can vary by device. If the tablet cannot access the internet over Wi-Fi, use a connection it can reach—such as a working hotspot—to check for an update, if that option is practical.

Check for an update after the simpler connection tests, and retry Wi-Fi after the update completes. If the tablet cannot get online by any available connection, do not assume that a particular update is available or that an update will fix the fault; continue to the support or reset decision based on the test results.
At hotels, airports, and cafes, finish the Wi-Fi sign-in
Some public Wi-Fi networks require a web sign-in page, often called a captive portal, after the tablet joins the wireless network. Joining the network alone may not provide internet access.

- Connect to the venue’s Wi-Fi network.
- Wait for the sign-in page to appear.
- If it does not appear, tap the connected network in Wi-Fi settings and choose Sign in.
- Complete the provider’s login or terms acceptance, if required.
Cancelling the sign-in can leave the tablet connected to the hotspot without internet access. Public networks may also have fees or provider restrictions, so follow the venue’s instructions. If a venue requires a code, account, or payment, the tablet cannot complete that requirement on its own; use the provider’s stated process or choose another network you are authorized to use.
This case can look like a tablet fault because the Wi-Fi status may show a connection while websites or apps do not work. Before resetting network settings, check whether a sign-in page is waiting. If the page does not appear automatically, use the network’s Sign in option as described above.
When a factory reset is appropriate
Consider a factory reset only if the earlier checks have not resolved the problem. It restores factory defaults and can remove locally stored settings or data. Before proceeding, understand the tablet’s backup and setup implications and make sure you can complete setup again. If the Wi-Fi issue continues after the reset, contact Amazon support with the tablet model and the results of the home-network and hotspot tests.
Do not make a factory reset the first response to a connection problem. First establish whether other devices are affected, restart the equipment, check caregiver restrictions, and try the narrower network-settings reset where appropriate. If you reach the factory-reset stage, make sure you understand what local settings or data could be lost and how you will set the tablet up afterward.

When you contact an ISP or Amazon support, explain what you tested: whether another device joined the home Wi-Fi, whether the Fire tablet worked on a hotspot, whether a public sign-in page was involved, and which restart or network-reset steps you tried. This gives support a clearer starting point than saying only that Wi-Fi does not work. Include the tablet’s model or generation if you know it, since the correct menu path can differ.
