If your WordPress favicon is missing, showing an older image, or appearing in the dashboard but not on the live site, fix it in this order: set the Site Icon with WordPress core, verify the icon URLs in the live HTML, remove duplicate theme or plugin declarations, purge every cache layer, and then isolate conflicts with a plugin and theme test. WordPress 6.5 and later use Settings > General; WordPress 4.3 through 6.4 use Appearance > Customize > Site Identity.
Use a square image of at least 512×512 pixels, preferably PNG. The checks below distinguish an incorrectly configured icon from one that is valid but hidden by stale cache, competing markup, a broken uploads URL, or a browser/search preview that has not refreshed.
What a favicon is and why WordPress can show the wrong result
A favicon (short for “favorite icon”) is the small image associated with a website or page. Browsers may display it in a tab, bookmark, history entry, address bar, or home-screen shortcut. WordPress calls the setting the Site Icon. The image stored there is used to generate the favicon declarations that browsers and devices read.
Several different systems can make the result look inconsistent:

- The icon was uploaded in the wrong WordPress screen for the site’s version.
- The source image does not meet the required size or is not being delivered as an image.
- A browser, WordPress cache plugin, host cache, reverse proxy, or CDN is serving older HTML or an older image.
- A theme or plugin has added a second favicon declaration with a different file or a broken URL.
- The browser tab is correct, but a search engine’s separately cached preview is old.
Do not begin by editing header.php or manually creating a favicon.ico file when the built-in Site Icon feature is available. Core handles the required markup and gives you one authoritative setting to troubleshoot.
Start with a quick diagnosis
Before changing files, establish which part is failing. Perform these checks in order and record what you see:

- Open the page source of the live URL, not only the WordPress editor preview. Search for
rel="icon",apple-touch-icon, andmsapplication-TileImage. - Copy each icon URL from the source and open it directly. A valid image response should load as an image rather than a 404 page, a redirect to an HTML document, or a browser security warning.
- Count the declarations. One core set is expected; multiple unrelated theme, plugin, and core paths indicate a conflict.
- Compare the live source with a fresh device or private window after each change. This prevents a local cache from disguising a successful repair.
If the source contains no icon declarations at all, go directly to the WordPress version-specific setup below. If declarations exist but their URLs fail, treat the problem as file delivery or markup, not as a browser display issue.
Set the Site Icon in WordPress core
WordPress 6.5 and later
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
- Open Settings > General.
- Find Site Icon and choose the image selector.
- Upload a square image that is at least 512×512 pixels, or choose an existing item in the Media Library.
- Confirm the crop if WordPress offers one, then save the General Settings page.
WordPress Version 6.5 moved the Site Icon control to General Settings. If an older tutorial tells you to look under the Customizer, it is describing the pre-6.5 interface.
WordPress 4.3 through 6.4
- Open Appearance > Customize.
- Select Site Identity.
- Under Site Icon, select or upload a square image at least 512×512 pixels.
- Publish the Customizer changes.
The version range matters: WordPress 4.3 introduced the core Site Icon feature, while WordPress 6.5 relocated its control. If the menu is absent, check the actual WordPress version under Dashboard > Updates and use the matching path.

Prepare an image that browsers can use
- Use equal width and height. A non-square source can be cropped unexpectedly or rejected by the selector.
- Meet the 512×512-pixel minimum. A larger square image gives WordPress enough detail to generate smaller variants.
- Prefer PNG, as WordPress documentation recommends. Keep transparency only when the artwork is intended to sit on different backgrounds.
- Use a simple mark that remains recognizable at tab size. Excessive fine detail disappears when reduced.
- After replacing an image, keep the filename or media item distinguishable enough that you can tell the new URL from an old cached one.
Understand what WordPress generates
When a Site Icon is configured, WordPress core uses the wp_site_icon() function to emit several pieces of metadata. The normal output includes icon links for a 32-pixel browser use case and a 192-pixel size, an Apple touch icon declaration, and Microsoft tile metadata. The function also applies the site_icon_meta_tags filter.

This means a working setup does not depend on one hand-written line in the theme header. Seeing several related declarations is normal; seeing several different image families is not. A core-generated set should resolve to the Site Icon selected in the dashboard. A theme logo, an old uploads path, and a plugin-hosted icon alongside that set create competing instructions for user agents.
Do not remove individual core tags simply because there is more than one. First identify whether all declarations point to the same current image family. If they do, leave the core output intact and continue with cache testing. If they point to different files, remove the extra source as described below.
Verify the live HTML and every icon URL
Dashboard previews prove only that WordPress saved an attachment. They do not prove that visitors receive the expected HTML or that the web server can deliver the image.
- Visit the public page in a browser.
- Use the browser’s page-source command (usually View Source from the page context menu) rather than relying only on the Elements inspector.
- Search for
rel="icon". Also search forapple-touch-iconandmsapplication-TileImagebecause those declarations may reveal a separate broken path. - Copy every referenced URL exactly and open it in a new tab.
- Check the response visually and in the browser’s network details. The response must be an image, not an HTML error page.
Interpret common URL failures

A redirect that eventually displays an image is still worth correcting. Some browsers tolerate it, while other clients, crawlers, or security policies may not.

Remove duplicate theme and plugin declarations
WordPress theme-review guidance recommends that themes not include their own favicon or Site Icon because core already provides it. Older themes and favicon plugins may nevertheless add a hard-coded <link rel="icon">, a logo path, or a filter that changes the generated tags.
- Search the live source for every icon-related link and note which path each one uses.
- Identify whether a path comes from the active theme, a plugin, or WordPress core. Theme asset paths often include the theme directory; plugin paths often include a plugin directory or a settings-generated URL.
- In the theme or plugin settings, turn off its favicon feature when the control exists.
- If the declaration is hard-coded in a custom theme, remove that declaration from the maintained template rather than editing generated files that will be overwritten.
- Save the core Site Icon again, purge caches, and inspect the source once more.
Keep one authoritative configuration. Do not leave an old theme icon in place “just in case”; browsers can choose different declarations, producing different results across tabs, bookmarks, and devices.
Purge every cache layer
Changing the Site Icon does not instantly invalidate copies already stored by browsers or infrastructure. WordPress documentation identifies browser cache, server-side caching, and cache plugins as common reasons a valid change appears not to take effect. Support guidance also calls out CDN, server, browser, and plugin caches.
Browser cache
- Open the site in a private or incognito window.
- Test a separate browser that has never visited the site, or use a fresh device.
- If the new icon appears only there, clear the original browser’s cached images and files, then close and reopen its tabs.
WordPress cache plugin
Use the plugin’s purge or clear-cache control. Clear both the page cache and any separately cached static assets if the plugin distinguishes them. Purging only an object cache may leave the old HTML in place.
Host and server cache
Use the hosting control panel’s cache purge option when one is provided. Managed hosts may cache full pages outside WordPress, so saving the setting in the dashboard alone is not sufficient.

Reverse proxy and CDN cache
Purge the public hostname and, if the service supports it, the specific icon URL. A CDN can retain either the old HTML that references the old file or the old image at an unchanged URL. After purging, check from a network or device that did not load the previous response.
Do not use a cache-busting filename as the first fix. It can hide an unresolved duplicate declaration or rewrite problem. Establish a single correct URL, purge the caches, and then retest.

If the source is inconsistent after cache purging, isolate the component that is modifying the head markup. This test should be temporary and performed during a maintenance window if the site is busy.

- Record the currently active plugins and any settings related to branding, headers, performance, or favicons.
- Temporarily deactivate all non-essential plugins. Leave only the components required to keep the site available.
- Load the public page in a private window and inspect the source and direct icon URL.
- If the correct icon returns, reactivate the plugins one at a time.
- After each activation, purge the relevant cache and inspect the source again.
- The last plugin activated before the problem returns is a likely source. Review its favicon, header-injection, optimization, and URL-rewriting settings or contact its maintainer.
Testing one plugin at a time is important. Reactivating several together only shows that one of the group is involved and does not identify which one.
Default-theme test
- Note the active theme and take a current backup before changing it.
- Temporarily switch to a current default WordPress theme.
- Clear caches, then inspect the public source and direct icon URL.
- If the icon works with the default theme, the original theme likely contains a hard-coded favicon link or a filter affecting Site Icon metadata.
- Switch back after testing and remove the duplicate declaration from the original theme, preferably through an update-safe child-theme or vendor-supported change.
If disabling plugins and switching themes do not change the result, return to the URL checks. A 404, HTML response, mixed-content block, or wrong uploads path is then more likely than a template conflict.

Built-in Site Icon versus manual or theme markup
The built-in path is the safer default because it centralizes the setting and lets core generate the related metadata. Manual markup can be appropriate only when a project has a documented, deliberate requirement that core does not meet.

Fix the symptom you actually have
The Site Icon control is missing
Confirm the WordPress version and use the matching menu. On 6.5 or later, look under Settings > General. On 4.3–6.4, use Appearance > Customize > Site Identity. If neither path exists, verify that you are editing the intended site and that your account has permission to change general settings.
The icon appears in the dashboard but not in any browser
Inspect the live source. If no declarations exist, the setting was not published or another component removed the head output. If declarations exist, open their URLs directly and correct any 404, redirect, mixed-content, or wrong-path response.
The old icon remains after replacement
Test privately and on a separate browser first. If the new image appears there, purge the original browser and every site cache. If the old URL remains in fresh page source, find and disable the duplicate theme or plugin declaration.
Different browsers show different icons
Compare each browser’s source and the direct URLs it requests. Different results usually indicate cached responses or multiple declarations, not a need for more image formats. Clear caches and reduce the page to one authoritative configuration.
The tab icon works but a search result still shows the old image
Treat these as separate systems. First confirm the live HTML and direct icon URL for ordinary visitors. Search engines maintain their own crawled previews, and the available guidance does not establish a guaranteed refresh time. Investigate recrawling only after the site itself is correct.
Keep the favicon reliable after the repair
- Keep one Site Icon configured in WordPress core and document any intentional customization.
- Use a square PNG of at least 512×512 pixels stored in the site’s normal Media Library.
- When changing the image, check the public source and direct URL from outside your logged-in session.
- Include favicon verification in theme and plugin deployment checks, especially after changing header, optimization, or URL-rewriting code.
- When diagnosing a future change, test a private window or fresh device before editing templates.
- Retain a backup before switching themes or disabling production plugins for conflict testing.
The reliable repair is therefore procedural: configure the correct core setting for the WordPress version, prove that every generated URL serves an image, remove competing declarations, purge caches at every layer, and isolate plugins or the theme only if the simpler checks do not resolve the mismatch.
