Choose the reset that matches the problem: restart first for a routine freeze, use a hardware reset for an unresponsive keyboard or touchpad, Powerwash for a persistent profile or settings problem, and ChromeOS recovery for a serious operating-system failure. Powerwash and recovery erase local files; recovery permanently erases the Chromebook’s hard drive. Back up what you can before either, and check your exact Dell model’s documentation if a general key sequence does not work.
Choose the right Dell Chromebook reset
“Reset” can mean three different procedures on a Chromebook. They are not interchangeable: a hardware reset restarts hardware, Powerwash returns the device to factory settings, and ChromeOS recovery removes and reinstalls the operating system.
| Action | Best for | Can the Chromebook start? | Local data impact | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart | A temporary freeze or ordinary problem | Usually, yes | No erase is described in Google’s restart guidance. | Power controls |
| Hardware reset | Hardware components such as the keyboard or touchpad are not responding | It can be turned off and started | May delete some files in Downloads. | Keyboard and Power; sequence varies on some devices |
| Powerwash | A persistent profile or settings issue, or preparing to change owners | It can start and you can sign out | Erases local user data, including Downloads, settings, apps, and files. | Keyboard and onscreen prompts |
| ChromeOS recovery | A serious OS issue, such as a missing-or-damaged ChromeOS message, or failed troubleshooting | It may not boot normally | Permanently erases everything on the hard drive, including downloaded files. | Recovery mode; internet or recovery media, depending on available options |
Google’s instructions describe Chromebook procedures generally, not one universal sequence for every Dell model. If a key combination does not work, consult documentation for the exact model rather than trying to infer a different sequence.

If your Dell Chromebook still responds, turn it off and back on before attempting a factory reset. Google recommends a restart before recovery when the Chromebook can still be used. If the issue continues, choose the next step according to its symptoms rather than jumping straight to a wipe. Google’s symptom-based troubleshooting guide covers charging, startup, update, and hardware problems.

Reset Chromebook hardware without Powerwashing
A hardware reset, sometimes called a hard reset, restarts Chromebook hardware, including components such as the keyboard and touchpad. It is not a factory reset and does not reinstall ChromeOS. Google cautions that the process may delete some files in Downloads, so do not treat it as guaranteed to preserve every local file.
- Turn off the Chromebook.
- Hold the Refresh key and tap Power.
- Release Refresh when the Chromebook starts.
Google also documents alternate sequences, and some devices use special methods. If the general sequence fails on your Dell, check the exact model’s instructions. See Google’s hardware reset guidance.
Powerwash: reset to factory settings
Powerwash is the factory-reset option for a profile or settings problem that remains after lower-impact troubleshooting, or when preparing to change the Chromebook’s owner. It erases local user data from the Chromebook’s hard drive, including Downloads, settings, apps, and files. It does not delete files stored in Google Drive or on external storage.

Back up and prepare
- Copy local files you need from Downloads to Google Drive or external storage.
- Sync information and settings before proceeding.
- If the Chromebook belongs to a school or workplace, contact its administrator instead of trying to reset it yourself.
Run Powerwash
- Sign out of the Chromebook.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
- Select Restart.
- In the dialog, select Powerwash, then Continue.
- Follow the onscreen setup steps. The account used after the reset becomes the Chromebook’s owner account.
For Google’s full instructions and managed-device caveat, see Reset your Chromebook to factory settings.
ChromeOS recovery: reinstall the operating system
Use recovery for a serious operating-system problem, such as a “ChromeOS is missing or damaged” message, or when other troubleshooting has failed. Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files. Back up first if the Chromebook remains usable.
Enter recovery mode
- Disconnect connected accessories.
- Hold Esc + Refresh, then press Power.
- Release Power, then release the other keys when the recovery message appears.
Some models use Esc + Maximize instead of Esc + Refresh. If the listed combination does not work, use the instructions for your exact Dell model. Google’s recovery guide explains the general process and data loss.

Choose internet recovery or USB recovery
On newer Chromebooks, choose recovery over an internet connection if that option appears. If it is not offered, create recovery media on another Chromebook or on a Windows or Mac computer using Chrome and the Chromebook Recovery Utility.

- Open the Chromebook Recovery Utility in Chrome on another computer and follow its prompts.
- When asked, enter the affected Chromebook’s model number and select the correct model; do not guess.
- Use the prepared media to continue recovery on the affected Chromebook, following the onscreen instructions.
USB media is needed only for the external-media route; if internet recovery is available, follow that option instead. See Google’s recovery instructions for the supported workflow.

Managed Chromebooks cannot be factory-reset by users in the ordinary way. A school or workplace administrator may need to wipe and re-enroll the device. Ask the administrator for help with recovery or ownership changes; do not try to bypass organizational management. Google covers this restriction in its factory-reset guidance and recovery guidance.

Check Dell model support and ChromeOS updates
Update eligibility is specific to the Chromebook model. The label “Dell Chromebook” is not enough to establish whether a particular device still receives updates or can be recovered. Google says older Chromebooks eventually stop receiving software updates when their hardware cannot support newer versions.
- Open Settings → About ChromeOS to check the installed ChromeOS version.
- Use the update check on that page to see whether an update is available.
- For eligibility or a procedure that does not match the general steps above, identify the exact Dell model and consult its support documentation and Google’s current ChromeOS update guidance.
If symptom-specific troubleshooting does not solve a charging, boot, update, or hardware problem, Google advises contacting the Chromebook manufacturer. Its troubleshooting guidance lists symptom-based next steps.
