Start in Billing > Summary and identify exactly what Google Ads is reporting: a declined card, a declined bank or direct-debit payment, an unpaid monthly-invoicing balance, an inactive billing setup, or a payment-verification request. The remedy depends on that message. For a card or bank decline, the financial institution—not Google—made the approval decision. Check the decline details, resolve the issuer-side problem, then retry or replace the payment method and pay any balance due.
If the notice concerns a billing profile, verification, temporary pause, or suspension, use the instructions shown in the account rather than treating it as an ordinary card decline. The steps below separate each status and show where account access, payment processing, and issuer restrictions affect the outcome.
First, identify which Google Ads billing problem you have
Open Google Ads and select Billing. The wording and location of the alert determine the correct path. Google’s overview covers card, bank/direct-debit, and monthly-invoicing cases in addition to account-level billing notices. See Google’s declined-payment overview for the status categories presented in the product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| What you see | What it usually concerns | Where to begin |
|---|---|---|
| Declined payment with a date, amount, or reason | A card or bank/direct-debit transaction rejected by the issuer | Billing > Summary, then the issuer and payment-method settings |
| Billing setup inactive, deactivated, or unavailable | A payment-profile, paying-manager, account, or balance problem | Billing > Settings and the message at the top of the page |
| Verify your payment information | Google is requesting a code, payment, or documents | The in-account alert or verification email |
| Temporarily paused or suspended for billing | An account-status control related to verification, an unpaid balance, or payment risk | The exact status notice and its requested action |
| Monthly-invoicing amount due | An invoice or credit-account balance rather than an immediate card charge | The invoice and payment instructions shown in Billing |
Do not assume that every red billing banner means the card is invalid. A billing-profile change, missing permission, verification request, and issuer decline are different problems with different owners and remedies.
Use Billing Summary as the first diagnostic
- Go to Billing > Summary.
- Open the declined transaction or alert.
- Record the date, amount, payment instrument, and any reason displayed.
- Check whether an outstanding balance is listed separately from the failed transaction.
The summary may provide enough information to correct a card entry or recognize a bank restriction. If no reason appears, ask the card company or bank. Google’s published instruction is explicit: “Keep in mind that your credit card company or bank declines your payment, not Google.” The issuer can see authorization codes and account restrictions that Google Ads cannot expose. Do not describe an unexplained decline as a Google-side rejection.

- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
Save a screenshot or note the transaction details before changing anything. The amount and date help the issuer locate the authorization attempt, especially when several campaigns or accounts share a payment profile.
Fix a declined credit or debit card
Check the card and issuer conditions first
Before pressing Retry, verify the details and the account conditions that commonly cause a card decline. Google lists these checks in its credit-card troubleshooting guidance:
- Card number, expiration date, and security code match the physical or virtual card.
- The card has not expired or been replaced by the issuer.
- Sufficient available funds or credit remain for the charge.
- The transaction will not exceed a credit limit or a single-transaction limit.
- The issuer permits the transaction type, including online, international, or recurring charges when those restrictions apply to the card and location.
- Any additional authentication requested by the issuer has been completed.
Ask the bank or card company which condition caused the authorization to fail and whether it has removed the restriction. If the issuer cannot approve the charge, repeatedly submitting the same transaction is unlikely to solve it and can create additional failed attempts.
Retry the existing card
- In Google Ads, open Billing > Settings > Payment methods.
- Find the affected card and select Fix it.
- Review or correct the displayed card details.
- Select Retry and follow the payment confirmation screens.
- Return to Billing > Summary and verify that the outstanding balance shows as paid or processing.
Correcting the card record does not automatically settle an overdue balance. Complete the payment flow shown after the retry and check the resulting transaction status.
Use another eligible payment method
If the issuer cannot approve the original card, choose Use a different payment method from the card’s fix flow. Select an option already offered for the account or enter new card details, then submit payment for the balance. The available choices depend on the account’s country, currency, billing setting, and eligibility; an option available to one advertiser may not appear for another.

A replacement method used to clear the balance may not become the account’s primary method automatically. After payment succeeds, inspect Billing > Settings > Payment methods again. Repair or replace the old primary card so the next automatic charge does not fail.
Check access if editing is blocked
For organization-type Google Ads accounts, adding or editing payment methods requires appropriate Admin or Billing access. If the controls are missing, ask an administrator or the payment-profile owner to perform the change. The exact permission depends on the account type and the action, as described in Google’s payment-method documentation.
Fix a declined bank account or direct debit
Read the bank-decline reason
Open Billing > Summary and record the reason shown for the direct-debit or bank transaction. A bank may reject outdated account details, an unauthorized debit, an online or international transaction restriction, insufficient funds, or a validation requirement. The bank—not Google Ads—controls that authorization.
Contact the bank with the transaction date and amount. Confirm that the account is open, the details entered in Google Ads are current, and the bank permits the attempted debit. If the bank requires authorization or validation, complete that process before trying again.
Correct the account or replace it
- Go to Billing > Settings > Payment methods.
- Select the affected bank account and follow the displayed correction or verification instructions.
- If the account cannot be repaired, choose the option to add another available bank account or payment method.
- Complete any test-deposit confirmation or new direct-debit authorization requested by Google Ads or the bank.
- Use the account’s payment flow to settle the outstanding balance.
Bank-account changes and direct-debit payments can require processing time. Google’s direct-debit and bank guidance gives estimates for particular methods and countries, but there is no single reactivation time for every account. Ads may remain limited while a new authorization or payment is processing.

When the account uses monthly invoicing
Monthly invoicing is not the same as an automatically charged card. The immediate issue may be an invoice balance, a credit-account limit, or payment instructions attached to the billing setup. In Billing > Summary, open the invoice or balance notice and follow the payment route shown there. Record the invoice number, due amount, and due date for your finance team or bank.
If the account also lists a failed backup payment method, resolve that method separately; paying an invoice does not necessarily repair a card or bank method stored for future charges. Do not substitute card-decline steps for an invoice instruction that calls for a bank transfer or another specified method.
Resolve an inactive billing setup or billing-profile message
A billing setup notice means the account’s relationship to its payment profile or paying manager may have changed. Google identifies cancellation of the Ads account, deletion of the payment profile, and a change to the paying manager or linked payment profile among possible causes. Read the message at the top of Billing > Settings and follow its stated action; the details are account-specific. The full status guidance is in Google’s billing-setup troubleshooting page.
Check the linked profile and responsible user
- Confirm that the Ads account is still linked to the intended payment profile.
- Check whether the paying manager or billing owner was changed.
- Verify that the payment profile still exists and has the expected country and currency.
- Ask an administrator to restore access if the settings are read-only or unavailable.
Follow any on-screen relinking or profile-correction steps before trying to add a card. Adding a new card to the wrong profile will not repair a deactivated billing setup.

Pay the balance before expecting reactivation
An inactive setup with an overdue balance generally requires the balance to be paid through the account’s displayed flow. A corrected profile or payment method alone may leave the account inactive. After submitting payment, watch both the transaction status and the billing-setup status. Google does not promise that ads restart immediately after payment; verification and processing checks vary by account and method.

Handle payment-verification requests safely
Google Ads may ask you to verify payment information with a code, a payment, or documents. Use the alert inside Google Ads or the verification email associated with the account, as explained in Google’s payment-verification instructions.
- Open the alert and read exactly which item is requested.
- Provide only the code, payment, or documents named in that request.
- Ensure names, addresses, payment details, and documents match the account’s profile and the requirements shown on screen.
- Submit through the in-account workflow or the Google channel identified in the message.
- Return to Billing to confirm whether the request is pending, accepted, or needs more information.
Do not send payment documents to an unrelated address or rely on a message that is not represented in the account. A verification request is not proof that the card was declined, and completing verification may still leave an unpaid balance that must be settled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand temporary pauses and billing suspensions
A temporary pause can occur while an advertiser confirms a payment method or makes a requested payment. A suspension is a separate account status that can involve an unpaid balance or concerns about whether future payments will be made. Google explains these distinctions in its billing and payment suspension guidance.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use the exact status wording in the account when deciding what to do:
- Temporary pause: complete the requested verification or payment and monitor the account status.
- Suspension for an unpaid balance: pay the amount requested and resolve the underlying payment failure.
- Suspension involving future-payment concerns: follow the account’s stated review or payment instructions; do not assume a card replacement alone will lift it.
There is no universal appeal or reactivation timeline for every billing status. Avoid promising a restart time to clients or stakeholders until the account itself shows that ads are eligible to run.

Confirm that the payment actually resolved the interruption
After any successful payment or method change, perform these checks in order:
- In Billing > Summary, confirm the transaction is marked paid or otherwise completed, not merely submitted.
- Check that the outstanding balance is zero or that the remaining amount is explained by another invoice or transaction.
- In Billing > Settings > Payment methods, confirm a valid primary method is present.
- Read the top-of-page billing status for any remaining profile, verification, or permission message.
- Review the account’s campaign or serving status to see whether ads are eligible to run.
A payment can succeed while a separate verification or billing-profile issue remains. Treat each visible status as a separate condition rather than assuming one green transaction clears every warning.
Common failure branches and what to do next
The retry fails immediately
Stop retrying and reread the issuer reason. Recheck the card details, limits, funds, and authentication with the bank. If the issuer confirms the card cannot be used, select another eligible method and pay the balance through that method.
The payment succeeds but the balance still appears
Allow the transaction to finish processing and refresh Billing. Check whether the successful payment covered a different invoice or only part of the balance. If the amount remains after the account reports completion, use the support route shown in the account with the transaction date and amount.
You cannot see Payment methods
This is commonly an access or payment-profile issue rather than a card failure. Ask a user with the required Admin or Billing access to make the change, and confirm that you are working in the correct Ads account and linked payment profile.
A new bank account is waiting for confirmation
Complete the test-deposit or authorization step specified for that account. Do not assume that entering the account number activates direct debit immediately; processing depends on the method and location.
The alert asks for documents after a card payment
Follow the verification workflow, ensure the documents meet the displayed requirements, and keep the account’s payment status in view. Verification and payment settlement are related but separate tasks.
Prevent another billing interruption
- Keep the primary card’s expiration date and billing details current.
- Ask the issuer whether recurring, online, or international authorization is required for your account.
- Maintain sufficient available credit or funds before an automatic charge is expected.
- Keep an eligible backup method available where the account permits one.
- Review the linked payment profile and paying manager after organizational changes.
- Give more than one administrator the access needed to resolve billing problems.
- Monitor Billing Summary for small failed charges before they become a larger overdue balance.
- Keep verification information consistent with the payment profile and submit requests only through Google’s in-account process.
Payment-method availability, permissions, verification requirements, and processing times vary by country, currency, account type, and billing setting. When the account’s instructions conflict with a general checklist, follow the account-specific instruction and contact the issuer for a bank-side decision.
