The cheapest fix for a PC’s “dead” USB port is to rule out a bad cable, device, hub, or software problem before paying for repair. If only one port has failed and another suitable port works, use that port; add a USB hub only if you need more connections. A hub is a workaround, not a repair.
Check whether the port is really dead
Work through these checks before buying an accessory or arranging service. They cost nothing and can show whether the problem is the port, the connected device, or something between them.
- Test the peripheral and cable on another computer. If they fail there too, the PC port may not be the cause.
- Try a different, known-working device in the suspect port. If it works, investigate the original device or cable.
- Connect directly to the PC. Remove any hub or dock from the connection while diagnosing; the intermediary may be causing the problem. MSI’s USB troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for interface or cable damage and then investigating drivers and updates.
- Restart the PC and inspect the port. Look for visible damage or debris. Do not force a connector into a port that feels loose or obstructed.
- If the problem persists, follow the PC maker’s software guidance. MSI’s Windows steps include reinstalling the USB Root Hub and host-controller drivers, then checking for Windows and BIOS updates. Use instructions for your exact PC or motherboard model rather than applying BIOS steps indiscriminately.
Choose the cheapest option that fits the fault
| What you find | Practical next step | What it does—and does not—solve |
|---|---|---|
| A device or cable also fails on another computer | Use a working device or cable, if available. | Addresses a likely peripheral-side problem; it does not establish that the PC port is faulty. |
| A hub is in the connection | Test the device directly in the PC. | Rules out the hub as a cause; it does not repair a damaged port. |
| One PC port fails, but another suitable port works | Use the working port. If you need extra connections, consider a compatible USB hub. | A hub can add connections through a working port, but cannot restore the failed socket. |
| Desktop front ports fail, but rear ports work | Check the internal front-panel USB cable connection, if you can do so safely. | A loose cable may explain the front ports without implying that the rear ports or motherboard USB connections have failed. |
| No ports work, or a port is visibly damaged or loose | Follow model-specific diagnostics or seek service evaluation. | A hub is not a solution if there is no suitable working port; repair depends on the device and fault. |
These are conditional choices, not a universal price ranking: the cited guidance does not establish comparable current prices for hubs or repairs. Start with the free checks, then decide whether an existing working port is enough or the fault needs service.
For a desktop, check the front-panel connection
If the case’s front USB ports are the only ones failing, test the rear ports first. If rear ports work, a disconnected internal front-panel cable is one possible explanation. HP’s desktop guidance describes checking the internal connection.

When a USB hub is a sensible workaround
A hub is useful only when the PC has another working port that suits the devices you want to connect. Check the connector type and the power needs of the attached devices; higher-power devices may not work reliably through every hub or port. Test devices directly first, since a hub can itself introduce connection or power problems. A repair reference lists an external hub as an alternative to repairing a failed laptop port, but that remains a workaround rather than a repair.

USB-C needs an extra compatibility check: the connector shape alone does not guarantee charging, display output, USB4, or Thunderbolt functionality. The PC, cable, and connected device all need to support the capability you want. Microsoft also identifies dirt, an unsuitable charger or cable, and connecting through a hub as possible causes of USB-C charging problems. See Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Do not keep trying to use a port that is visibly damaged, loose, or physically obstructed. Avoid forcing a plug into it. ASUS recommends service evaluation when there is physical port or cable damage; consult the instructions for your exact model because the repair method depends on the device and fault. ASUS USB troubleshooting guidance does not establish one repair price for all PCs.
