The usual fix is to start the dedicated server with an explicit configuration argument and make sure the file is readable from the server’s working directory. A known-good launch pattern is DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2302 -profiles=serverprofile. Confirm that the file is really named serverDZ.cfg, attach -config=serverDZ.cfg to the launch method that actually starts the server, then use the newest log to distinguish a path problem from a configuration-syntax problem.
This guide walks through that repair in order, including shortcuts, batch files, services, hosting panels, relative paths, profile logs, malformed configuration content, and the trade-offs between listen, local dedicated, and managed server setups.

What “Server config not found” means
DayZ does not locate a configuration file merely because one exists somewhere on the disk. The server process must be told which file to load, and it must be able to resolve and read that file when it starts. The error normally means one of three things:
- The launch command has no
-config=...argument. - The argument points to a filename or path that is not valid from the server’s current working directory.
- The file can be found, but the process cannot use it because of permissions or malformed configuration content.
The fastest diagnostic is therefore not to recreate the whole server. Start with one controlled command, verify the filename and location, and then inspect the newest log for the exact failure.

The direct fix
- Place a valid configuration file where the server can resolve it.
- Name it exactly
serverDZ.cfg, including the.cfgextension. - Start the executable with an explicit configuration argument, for example:
DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2302 -profiles=serverprofile - Read the newest log in the profile directory and correct any path, permission, syntax, or value errors it reports.
The important part is -config=serverDZ.cfg. Starting DayZServer_x64.exe by itself can omit the file reference and produce the same message even when the file is sitting beside the executable.
Step 1: Confirm the file name and extension
Use the exact expected name
Check the file in File Explorer or your server’s file manager. It must be named serverDZ.cfg. The capitalization is worth preserving because it removes ambiguity when you later compare the command line, directory listing, and log output.

If File Explorer hides known extensions, a file displayed as serverDZ.cfg may actually be serverDZ.cfg.txt. Enable file-name extensions, or inspect the full name in the file properties. Rename it so the complete filename is exactly serverDZ.cfg.
Check that it is a file, not a folder or shortcut
Open the item’s properties and confirm that it is a normal text configuration file. A shortcut with the right-looking label, a directory named serverDZ.cfg, or a zero-byte placeholder will not provide usable configuration data.
Check readability
The account that launches the server must be able to read the file. This matters when the server is started by a service account, scheduled task, wrapper, or hosting control panel rather than by your interactive Windows account. If the path is correct but the log reports access or read failures, grant the launching account read access to the file and its parent directories, then test again.
Step 2: Put the file in the directory the command uses
How a relative path works
In -config=serverDZ.cfg, the filename is relative rather than an absolute Windows path. The server resolves it from the working directory used for that launch. That directory is not always the directory you see in an Explorer window, and it can change depending on whether you use a shortcut, batch file, service wrapper, Steam, or a hosting panel.

For the documented relative-file pattern, keep serverDZ.cfg in the directory from which the server process resolves the argument. If you launch from a batch file, identify the batch file’s working directory and make sure the command starts the server there. If a panel lets you select a working directory, use the directory that contains the configuration file, or supply the path format required by that panel.
When the file is elsewhere
You have two choices:
- Move or copy
serverDZ.cfginto the working directory expected by the existing command. - Change the argument to the correct path, using the path syntax accepted by your launch method.
Do not assume that placing a second copy somewhere else fixes the original command. The server loads the file named by the actual argument, not whichever copy is easiest to find in Explorer. Keep one known-good copy for the controlled test so you can identify exactly which file is being read.
Step 3: Add -config to the launch method that really starts the server
The argument must be attached to the process that starts the server, not merely saved in a note or added to a shortcut you never use. Check each possible launch path:
Batch file
Open the .bat file used to start the server and locate the line that runs DayZServer_x64.exe. Add -config=serverDZ.cfg to that same command. Include the port and profile options if you use them:

Testing the edited file while an older instance is still running can make it appear that the change had no effect.
Desktop shortcut
Open the shortcut properties and inspect the command in the Target field. Add the configuration argument to the executable’s command line, preserving the executable path and any existing options. Start the server through that shortcut after saving the change.

Steam or another launcher
If you start the server through Steam or a launcher, enter the argument in that tool’s launch-options field or use the tool’s documented server-start configuration. Starting the executable directly from a file browser can bypass those options, so always test using the same route that will be used for normal operation.
Service, scheduled task, or wrapper
Inspect the configured executable path, arguments, and working directory. A service may run under a different account and start in a system directory, so a relative -config=serverDZ.cfg can fail even though the same command works in an interactive terminal. Set the service’s working directory explicitly when the wrapper supports it, or use the correct path format for that service.
Hosting control panel
Look for separate fields named Startup command, Additional arguments, Configuration file, Working directory, or Profiles directory. Put -config=serverDZ.cfg in the field that becomes part of the actual server command. A panel may silently replace a manual shortcut, so changing a local shortcut will not repair a panel-managed instance.
Step 4: Set a predictable profiles directory
Add -profiles=serverprofile or another writable profile-directory value to the launch command. The profiles option gives logs and generated profile data a predictable location, which makes troubleshooting much faster than searching the entire installation.
The directory must be writable by the account that starts the server. If the server creates no new log, check that the profile path is valid and that the account has permission to create files there. Keep the profile directory separate from unrelated game files when possible, so the newest log is easy to identify.
Step 5: Read the newest log before changing anything else
After a failed start, stop the process, launch it once with the controlled command, and open the newest log in the profile directory. Treat that log as the primary trace for the current attempt; older logs may describe a different command or a different working directory.

A path error and a syntax error require different fixes. Do not spend time editing server settings while the log still shows that the file cannot be located, and do not keep moving files after the log confirms that the file was opened and parsing failed.
Step 6: Validate the configuration contents
Once the path is correct, inspect the contents. A present file can still be unusable if it contains malformed syntax or values the server cannot accept. Compare the file with a known-valid configuration supplied for your DayZ server installation, preserving only the settings you understand.
Look for accidental text-file changes
Open the file in a plain-text editor rather than a word processor. Check for extra introductory text, incomplete lines, or formatting characters introduced while copying and pasting. Save the file as a normal text configuration file and keep the original as a backup before making edits.

If the log identifies a rejected entry, correct that entry and launch again. Making several unrelated changes at once makes it difficult to tell which edit resolved the failure. Keep a short record of the original value and the replacement so you can reverse a change that creates a new error.
Use a known-good baseline
If you cannot identify the malformed line, temporarily restore a configuration that is known to load, then reapply your custom settings in small groups. Test after each group. This separates a content problem from a path problem without requiring a complete reinstall.

DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2302 -profiles=serverprofile- Close any existing DayZ server process.
- Open the directory you intend to use as the working directory.
- Confirm that
serverDZ.cfgis present there, or adjust the argument to the file’s actual location. - Run the command once.
- Wait for the process to create or update the profile log.
- Compare the newest log with the previous failure.
Keep the command simple until the server starts successfully. Reintroduce wrappers, panels, automatic restart tools, and additional launch options afterward. If the direct test works but the normal launcher fails, the remaining fault is in that launcher’s arguments, working directory, account, or permissions.

Common failure patterns and fixes
“I can see the file, but the error remains”
Seeing the file in Explorer does not prove that the server is looking in that directory. Confirm the command’s working directory and read the newest log. If the command uses a relative filename, either place the file in that working directory or change the argument to the intended path.
“I added the argument, but it still says not found”
Verify that you edited the launch path actually being used. A server started by a service or panel will ignore a modified desktop shortcut. Also check for a typo such as -config serverDZ.cfg instead of the required equals form, or a filename that differs from the file on disk.
“It worked in a terminal but not through the panel”
The two launch methods may use different working directories or Windows accounts. Copy the effective arguments from the successful test into the panel’s startup configuration, set its working directory if available, and ensure its account can read the configuration and write the profile directory.
“The error changed after I moved the file”
A changed error is useful evidence. If the message now identifies a syntax or value problem, the server is probably reaching the file and has moved past the original path failure. Stop moving the file and fix the reported configuration entry instead.

“There is no useful log”
Use an explicit writable -profiles directory and run the command once from a known location. If no log is created, check that the executable launches at all and that the profile path is not blocked by permissions or an invalid working directory.
Choosing a server setup after the repair
The configuration error can occur in several operating models. The right choice depends on how much control you need and how much file maintenance you want to perform.

A local dedicated server is often the clearest environment for diagnosing this particular error because you can inspect the executable command, working directory, file name, account, and logs directly. Managed hosting can reduce local maintenance, but the exact configuration-file controls, startup fields, and pricing depend on the provider and should be checked in that provider’s current documentation.
A repeatable recovery checklist
- Stop duplicate or old server processes.
- Show full file extensions and confirm the name is exactly
serverDZ.cfg. - Confirm the item is a readable file, not a folder, shortcut, or empty placeholder.
- Identify the working directory used by the real launch method.
- Put the file in that directory or provide the correct path in
-config=.... - Make sure the launch command includes
-config=serverDZ.cfg. - Add a writable
-profiles=serverprofiledirectory. - Run one controlled command with
-port=2302or the port required by your setup. - Open the newest profile log.
- Fix path and permission errors before editing configuration values.
- Fix syntax and value errors after the server confirms it can open the file.
- Retest through the normal launcher only after the direct command succeeds.
When to stop troubleshooting the path
Once the log shows that the configuration file has been opened and the error concerns malformed syntax or an invalid value, the “config not found” part is no longer the active problem. Keep the file where it is, preserve the working launch command, and focus on the specific content error. Conversely, if every attempt still reports that the file cannot be found, do not rebuild the configuration; recheck the actual launch path, working directory, spelling, extension, and permissions.
