If a Conan Exiles server will not start because its world database is corrupted, the safest recovery is to stop the server, preserve the current files, and restore the newest known-good database backup. Do not overwrite the file while the server is running. A restore returns the world to the backup’s point in time, so buildings, characters and other progress made afterward will be lost.
What game.db contains—and what it does not
Conan Exiles stores the persistent world in a SQLite database. That database contains world state such as buildings and characters. On a Legacy server (the Unreal Engine 4 edition), the file is commonly named game.db. Enhanced servers (the Unreal Engine 5 edition) commonly use game_0.db, although hosting documentation is inconsistent about the exact filename used by every dedicated-server installation.

Use the file that actually exists in your server’s ConanSandbox/Saved/ directory rather than assuming a name. A file called ServerSettings.ini in the Config folder stores server settings separately; replacing the world database does not replace those settings.
Before you restore: consequences and prerequisites
A restore rolls the world back
The replacement database represents an earlier snapshot. Every construction, character change, inventory change and other world action after that snapshot disappears. Tell players when the backup was taken before bringing the server back online.

Stop the server completely
Use the host control panel’s Stop command or stop the dedicated-server process yourself. Wait several seconds until the process has exited and the panel shows the server as fully stopped. SQLite can still be writing after a stop request; replacing a file during shutdown can create a half-written database.
Install required mods first
If the world depends on mods, install the same required mods before restoring and starting it. A valid database can still fail to load when its content is missing or when the enabled mod set is incompatible.

Make a safety copy
Before renaming or deleting anything, download or copy the entire Saved folder to a separate location. At minimum, preserve the current database, its backup files and any sidecar files. This copy is your only way back if the selected backup is older than expected or also damaged.

/home/container/ConanSandbox/SavedYour host may expose the same directory through a web file manager, SFTP or a mounted game volume. If you cannot see the folder, ask the host where the active save volume is mounted instead of uploading a database into an arbitrary installation directory.

Do not move an Enhanced save back to a Legacy server. Keep a copy of the Legacy database before upgrading: the Enhanced format cannot be reverted to a Legacy server according to the migration guidance.

- Announce the rollback and stop the server. Stop it from the control panel or terminate the dedicated-server process, then wait a few seconds for a complete shutdown.
- Open the active save directory. In the host file manager or through SFTP, open
ConanSandbox/Saved/(for example,/home/container/ConanSandbox/Savedon a container-style host). - Copy the current files elsewhere. Download the whole
Savedfolder if possible. Otherwise copy the active database, all database backups and the associated sidecar files to an offline folder. - Rename the damaged database. Rename
game.dbtogame.db.bakorgame.db.old. For Enhanced, apply the same idea to the actual active name, such asgame_0.db. Renaming preserves evidence and lets you undo the change; do not permanently delete the file yet. - Find a backup from before the failure. Legacy backups are reported with names such as
game_backup_##.db. Enhanced backups are reported with names such asgame_0_backup_*.db. Sort by the timestamp or sequence number and choose the newest file created before the first failed start or before corruption began. - Account for the save interval. Automatic saves are reported to run about every five minutes, so even a healthy backup can be several minutes behind the last player action. Treat that interval as an approximation, not a guarantee for every host configuration.
- Put the backup in the active filename. Copy or rename the selected Legacy backup to
game.db. On Enhanced, usegame_0.dbif that is the filename the server uses. Keep the original backup copy as well. - Remove stale SQLite sidecars. Delete leftover
game.db-walandgame.db-shmfiles after the server is stopped. If the active database is namedgame_0.db, look for the correspondinggame_0.db-walandgame_0.db-shm. These write-ahead-log and shared-memory sidecars can cause the old damaged state to be applied again. - Start the server and watch the first load. Start it from the panel and monitor the console or log. Wait for the world to finish loading before allowing players to connect.
- Verify the rollback in game. Check a known landmark, character or recent build so you can confirm that the intended snapshot loaded. Once verified, make a fresh backup before changing mods or settings.
Choosing among the recovery options

Do not run an untested “repair” command against the only copy. SQL integrity checks, dump-and-reimport procedures and other SQLite techniques were not established for this specific Conan Exiles database. Preserve the original first and let the host advise on a copy.
If the restored server still will not start
Try an older backup
If the newest pre-failure backup produces the same error, stop the server again, preserve the files currently in place and test the next older backup. This follows the same restore logic: the newest snapshot may contain the corruption, while an earlier snapshot may load. Each attempt should use a separately retained copy so you can return to the first restored state.

Separate database failure from a mod failure
A server that reaches world load and then crashes roughly 30 to 90 seconds later is reported in troubleshooting guides as more suggestive of a mod conflict than of a database that cannot be opened. Check that every required mod is installed, that its version matches the server, and that the load order is the same as it was when the backup was created. If the crash began after a mod change, revert that change before testing another database.
Consider memory pressure during heavy activity
Crashes during heavy decay processing or raid windows are reported as possible memory exhaustion. Check the host’s memory graph and server log around the crash. Remove unrelated load, stop other processes on a self-managed machine and ask the provider whether the instance is reaching its memory limit. Do not assume that replacing the database alone will fix a resource problem.
Linux or Wine dependency errors
For Linux or Wine-based hosts, one troubleshooting guide recommends installing these Winetricks components:
winetricks dotnet48 vcrun2019Use that command only when the host’s deployment actually runs Conan Exiles through Wine and you have administrative access. On a managed panel, ask support to apply the equivalent dependencies; changing the runtime on a managed image can break other servers.

Check that you replaced the active file
- Confirm the panel’s startup command points to the
Saveddirectory you edited. - Confirm the restored name matches the filename the server creates or reads, especially on Enhanced installations.
- Confirm file ownership and permissions still allow the game process to read and write the database.
- Confirm no second server instance is running from a different installation directory.
- Confirm the old
-waland-shmsidecars were removed while the server was stopped.
Common mistakes that make corruption worse
Replacing a file while the process is running
The active process may immediately recreate the database, continue writing to the old inode or combine the restored file with a stale write-ahead log. Always stop, wait for a full shutdown and then edit the directory.
Deleting the only copy
Renaming is safer than deletion. Keep the damaged file until the restored world has been checked and at least one new backup has completed.

Putting game.db in an Enhanced installation that expects game_0.db can leave the server apparently unchanged or cause it to generate a new world. Inspect the directory and match the backup prefix to the active database.
Assuming settings were rolled back
The world database and the Config folder are separate. A database restore does not automatically restore ServerSettings.ini. If settings were also changed and must match the backup date, preserve and restore the appropriate Config files separately, while remembering that this can affect passwords, rates and other administrative choices.

Upgrading without a migration copy
Before moving from Legacy to Enhanced, retain the Legacy database files. An Enhanced save cannot be moved back to a Legacy server, so deleting the old file removes your fallback.
How to verify a successful recovery
- The server remains online beyond the initial world-load period and does not repeatedly restart.
- The console no longer reports the original database-open or corruption failure.
- A known building, character and recent world landmark match the selected backup date.
- Required mods load without missing-content errors.
- Players can connect, interact with the world and log out normally.
- A new backup completes after the recovered server has been running long enough to save.
Keep the pre-restore copy until these checks pass. If the server fails again, that copy lets you test another backup without losing the original evidence.
Preventing a repeat incident
Keep a retention chain
Do not retain only one rotating snapshot. Keep several points in time so that a corruption event copied into the newest automatic backup does not eliminate every recovery option. The reported roughly five-minute autosave cadence is useful for estimating potential loss, but it is not a substitute for independent backups.
Back up before risky changes
Make a manual copy of the Saved folder before changing mods, upgrading from Legacy to Enhanced or performing large administrative edits. Record the edition, active database filename and the mod list beside the copy.
Protect backups from the live process
Copy files only after a clean stop when possible. If your provider offers snapshots, use a snapshot mechanism designed for the service rather than copying a database that is being written.
Document the recovery details
Write down the server’s active path, startup command, edition, database filename, backup naming pattern and host support contact. During an outage, this prevents a rushed restore into the wrong directory.

When to contact the host
Open a support ticket when you cannot stop the process cleanly, cannot access the active save directory, have no visible backup, or every available backup fails. Include the first failure time, the exact filename, the server edition, recent mod or update changes, the crash timing and the relevant log excerpt. Ask whether the provider has an earlier managed snapshot and whether it can restore the complete Saved folder. Do not send only the damaged database if the provider needs the matching configuration or mod state to reproduce the failure.
