A cordless drill that will not hold a charge usually has one of five causes: no power reaching the charger, a battery that is not seated or making contact, a temporary temperature lockout, an incompatible or failing charger, or a worn or damaged battery. Start with the outlet, fit, contacts and model-specific indicator. Let a hot pack cool, then test only with parts approved for that drill platform. If the pack still will not charge, or it charges but runs for only a short time, stop using it and arrange manufacturer service or buy a replacement matched to the exact model.
First identify what “won’t hold a charge” means
People use this phrase for two different faults. Separating them prevents you from replacing a battery when the charger or connection is the real problem.
| What you observe | Most useful first checks | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| The charger shows no expected light or response | Test the outlet, reconnect the charger, reseat the pack and inspect accessible contacts. | Power, fit, contacts, charger or battery electronics may be preventing a charge. |
| The charger indicates charging, but the drill soon stops | Confirm the pack reaches a full charge and compare runtime with its normal use; inspect for damage. | The battery may have lost usable capacity or the tool may need service. |
| The pack worked until you used the drill heavily, then refuses to charge | Remove it and let it return to a normal temperature before trying again. | A heat-protection lockout may be temporary. |
| The problem appears only in a cold location | Move the pack and charger to the temperature range specified by the drill maker and try again. | Low temperature can reduce lithium-ion activity; the exact limits are model-specific. |
Do not assume that a flashing light has the same meaning on every drill. The Yard Force battery-check guidance and the Xiaomi Mijia Brushless Cordless Drill 2 FAQ both direct owners to their model’s indicator information rather than a universal light-code chart.

Unplug the charger and remove the battery from the drill before inspecting it. A lithium-ion pack can overheat, catch fire or explode when it is damaged, shorted, charged with the wrong equipment or handled improperly. Health Canada’s lithium-ion safety guidance recommends obtaining power-tool replacement batteries from the original manufacturer or retailer.

- Do not use a pack with a cracked case, swelling, leaking material, a burnt smell, corrosion that compromises the pack, or heat that persists after it is disconnected.
- Do not open the casing, bridge contacts, replace individual cells or follow generic “reset” and rebuild instructions.
- Never substitute a charger or battery merely because the connector fits. Voltage, electronics, protection systems and physical keying must match the drill platform.
- Place a suspect pack away from combustible materials and follow the manufacturer or local authority’s instructions for service, recycling and disposal.
DEWALT’s battery-safety guidance specifically directs users to service centers when a battery no longer holds a charge and says not to attempt battery repair or service yourself.
Step-by-step diagnosis
1. Verify the outlet and charger power
- Plug a lamp or another known-working device into the same outlet. If it does not work, reset the circuit breaker or use a different outlet.
- Connect the charger firmly to the outlet and check that its cable, plug and housing have no cuts, crushed sections or scorch marks.
- If the charger has a separate power lead, reseat that connection at both ends. Do not continue using a damaged lead.
- With the charger powered, observe its normal indicator sequence in the drill manual. Record what you actually see rather than interpreting a color from another model.
If the outlet works but the charger remains completely inactive with a known-good compatible pack, the charger or its power lead may need manufacturer testing. Do not dismantle the charger.
2. Seat and lock the battery
- Remove the pack and check that its rails, latch and keying match the drill and charger.
- Slide it into the charger in the direction shown by the manual until the latch clicks or the pack is fully flush.
- Gently tug the pack without forcing it. It should not rock, sit at an angle or fall out.
- Repeat the seating check on the drill itself. A pack that powers the drill intermittently may have a mechanical fit problem even if it can charge.
The Yard Force support procedure treats correct seating and locking as a basic check before any part is replaced.

With the pack removed and the charger disconnected, look at the metal contacts on the battery, charger and drill. They should be dry, straight and free of packed dust, oil and obvious corrosion.
- Use a clean, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe loose dirt.
- Do not scrape aggressively, bend spring contacts, apply liquid cleaner or insert metal tools.
- Stop if a contact is burned, loose, pushed back into its housing or visibly damaged; arrange service instead.
A dirty contact can interrupt charging, but a visibly damaged contact is not a safe home-repair project. The support instructions from Yard Force and Xiaomi both emphasize checking connection condition before deeper diagnosis.
4. Let a recently used pack cool
Heavy drilling can leave a lithium-ion pack too warm for immediate charging. BLACK+DECKER explains that hot-pack protection can prevent charging immediately after use. Remove the battery, place it in a dry, ventilated indoor area and wait until it is near room temperature. Do not accelerate cooling with a freezer, refrigerator, water or a heat source.
Try charging again only when the pack is no longer hot. If the charger still reports a fault after cooling, continue with the compatibility and service checks rather than repeatedly cycling it.

5. Account for cold conditions
Cold can also change charging behavior. The Xiaomi model FAQ says low ambient temperature reduces lithium-ion battery activity. That is model-specific guidance, not a universal temperature specification for every drill. Bring the pack and charger into the temperature range stated in your own manual, allow condensation to disappear, then retry. Never charge a wet or visibly frozen pack.
6. Use a known-good compatible pack as a diagnostic
If you can borrow another battery, it must be explicitly compatible with the exact drill and charger platform. Match the manufacturer’s platform, voltage, physical keying and approved part information; appearance alone is not enough.
- Charge the known-good pack in the same charger, following its indicator instructions.
- Fit it to the drill and check whether the tool runs normally.
- Return to the original pack and compare the charger response without forcing either pack into place.
If the second compatible pack works and the original does not, the original battery becomes the leading suspect, but this test does not prove that every fault is inside the pack. The charger contacts, charger electronics and drill connection still need the manufacturer’s assessment. Makita’s service FAQ and Health Canada both support using manufacturer-approved compatibility information rather than an arbitrary substitute.
7. Check the charger without creating a new hazard
After the outlet, fit, contacts and temperature checks, a charger that gives no normal response with any compatible pack may be the failed component. Do not probe live contacts, open the charger or use a third-party unit to “see if it works.” Record the drill model, battery part number, charger part number and indicator behavior, then contact the tool maker or an authorized service center.
Questions to answer before you buy anything
Write down the exact model printed on the drill, the battery’s model or part number, its voltage, the charger’s part number and the symptoms. Note whether the pack was hot, cold, dropped, wet or stored for a long period. This information lets a service desk distinguish a battery issue from a charger, drill or environmental issue.
Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list, not just a marketplace photograph. Two packs can have the same nominal voltage and still use different rails, terminals, communication contacts or protection electronics. A higher-capacity pack may alter weight and balance, while a lower-capacity pack may provide less runtime; neither is automatically suitable. If the manufacturer lists several approved packs, compare capacity or expected runtime, warranty coverage and total cost with replacing the entire drill. Do not assume a replacement is economical until the drill itself, charger and other accessories are considered.
When the battery charges but runtime is very short
A pack can indicate full charge yet deliver little working time. First confirm that the charger reaches its normal full-charge indication and that the drill is not stopping because of a separate mechanical or electronic fault. If the same pack repeatedly runs down quickly under ordinary work after the checks above, its usable capacity may have declined and service or replacement is appropriate.

- Compare like with like: a high-load task such as driving large fasteners will use energy faster than light screwdriving.
- Note whether the short runtime occurs immediately after a full-charge indication or only after the pack has been stored for a long period.
- Do not judge a replacement by voltage alone. Capacity, battery-management electronics, connector keying and the tool platform all matter.
- If the pack becomes unusually hot, swells, smells burnt or cuts out abruptly, stop using it instead of performing more runtime tests.
No reliable universal cycle-life or failure-rate number applies to every cordless drill battery. Chemistry, load, storage, temperature and the manufacturer’s protection system differ by model.
Choosing service or a replacement
Use the evidence from your checks to choose the next step. A replacement is justified only after compatibility and safety are established; it is not a cure for a dead outlet, damaged charger or broken drill contact.
| Finding | Next action | What to provide the service desk |
|---|---|---|
| No power at the outlet | Restore the circuit or use a working outlet; no battery purchase is indicated. | Outlet or circuit details if the problem persists. |
| Pack will not latch or contacts are damaged | Stop using the affected tool or pack and request service. | Drill model, battery model and clear description of the physical damage. |
| Pack was hot after use but charges once cool | Follow the manual’s operating and charging-temperature guidance. | When the protection occurred and how long cooling took. |
| Another approved pack works normally | Ask the manufacturer about service, warranty or a model-compatible replacement for the suspect pack. | Battery part number, purchase information and charger behavior. |
| No compatible pack works in a known-working outlet | Have the charger and drill evaluated; do not assume the battery is at fault. | Both part numbers, indicator sequence and outlet test result. |
| Pack charges but runtime remains very short | Seek manufacturer service or replace it with the exact approved battery if the tool is otherwise sound. | Observed runtime, task type, charge indication and any heat or damage. |
Before buying, locate the tool’s model and voltage label and verify the battery part number in the manufacturer’s compatibility list. The reliable product category here is a model-compatible replacement battery, not a universal pack. Compare capacity or expected runtime, manufacturer approval, warranty and total cost with replacing the entire drill, but do not select solely by voltage or appearance.
How to store and handle a working battery
- Use the charger supplied with, or expressly recommended for, the drill platform.
- Keep the pack dry and away from direct heat, flames and metal objects that could bridge the terminals.
- For long-term storage, Health Canada advises about 50% charge; follow the drill maker’s model-specific instruction if it differs.
- Inspect the pack before each use. A pack that develops swelling, cracking, leakage, persistent heat or a burnt odor should be removed from service.
- Use local manufacturer or municipal battery-recycling guidance. Do not put a damaged lithium-ion pack in ordinary household rubbish unless local authorities explicitly direct you to do so.
Common mistakes that make the problem worse
Using a charger that merely fits
Similar-looking slide packs can use different voltage ranges, terminals and communication controls. A charger that fits mechanically can still create a fire or equipment hazard. Verify the exact platform and approved part number.
Forcing a pack into the charger
Forcing can bend contacts or defeat the keying that prevents an unsafe combination. If the pack does not slide and lock normally, stop and check the manual.

When to stop troubleshooting
End home checks immediately if the pack is visibly damaged, unusually hot, smoking, leaking, swollen or giving off a chemical or burnt odor. Move people away, avoid touching a compromised pack and follow local emergency and disposal guidance. For a pack that simply fails the normal checks without physical damage, contact the tool manufacturer or authorized service center with the model and part numbers. A compatible replacement battery is reasonable only after that identification step confirms it is the correct part.

Why does my drill battery refuse to charge right after use?
Heat protection may temporarily block charging after heavy work. Remove the pack and let it cool naturally in a dry, ventilated place, then retry using the normal charger. If it still reports a fault, stop repeated attempts and contact the manufacturer.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Can I use another brand’s battery if the voltage is the same?
No. Matching voltage alone does not establish compatibility. Rails, terminals, communication controls, protection electronics and charger requirements can differ. Use only a battery expressly approved for the drill platform.
Should I clean the battery contacts with solvent or sandpaper?
No. With power disconnected, wipe accessible loose dirt with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use liquid cleaner, scrape aggressively or bend contacts. Damaged or burned contacts require service.
How can I tell whether the charger or battery failed?
After checking the outlet, seating, contacts and temperature, a known-good compatible pack can provide a useful comparison. If it charges and runs normally, the original pack is suspect. If no approved pack works, have the charger and drill evaluated; the comparison is evidence, not a definitive electrical test.
Is a battery that reaches “full” but lasts only minutes defective?
It may have lost usable capacity, although demanding work can also consume energy quickly and a drill fault can cause cutouts. Compare the same task and conditions, watch for heat or swelling, and seek manufacturer service or an approved replacement when short runtime repeats.

Can I open and rebuild the pack to save money?
No. Opening a lithium-ion pack, replacing cells or bypassing its protection system creates short-circuit, fire and injury hazards. DEWALT and other manufacturers direct users to authorized service rather than user repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my cordless drill battery stop charging after heavy use?
A hot-pack protection system may temporarily prevent charging. Let the battery cool naturally to near room temperature, then retry with the correct charger. Persistent failure requires manufacturer service.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use a same-voltage battery from another brand?
No. Compatibility also depends on physical keying, terminals, communication electronics and protection systems. Use only a battery expressly approved for your drill platform.
How do I know whether the battery or charger is bad?
Check the outlet, fit, contacts and temperature first. A known-good compatible battery can provide evidence: if it works, the original pack is suspect; if no approved pack works, the charger or drill needs evaluation.
Is it safe to rebuild a lithium-ion drill battery?
No. Do not open the casing, replace cells or bypass protection electronics. Use an authorized service center or approved recycling route.
What should I do with a swollen or leaking pack?
Stop using it immediately, keep people away, avoid touching damaged areas and follow the manufacturer’s emergency, service and disposal guidance. Do not charge or place it in household rubbish unless local authorities direct you.
Why does my battery say full but run down quickly?
Usable capacity may have declined, though heavy work can also consume energy faster. Compare the same task and conditions; recurring short runtime indicates service or an exact approved replacement.
The Bottom Line
Check the outlet, charger connection, battery seating, accessible contacts and temperature before buying parts. Use only model-approved batteries and chargers, and never open or force a lithium-ion pack. If a compatible pack still will not charge, or a full charge gives repeatedly short runtime, have the manufacturer or an authorized service center diagnose it and verify any replacement by exact model and part number.
