If a ChatGPT dot will not connect or respond, open the affected dot task first and look for a pending approval, sign-in, connection request, or paused state. OpenAI’s dot is software: an always-on ChatGPT agent with its own cloud computer, not a documented battery-powered gadget. That means there is no OpenAI dot charging port, charger, battery replacement, or cable fix to try.
If you meant a separate physical product that happens to be called a “ChatGPT dot,” stop before applying hardware advice and identify its manufacturer and exact model. The steps below apply to OpenAI’s dot feature.
What a ChatGPT dot is—and why it cannot “stay charged”
OpenAI describes a dot as “an always-on agent in ChatGPT that can help you take a project from an idea to work you can use.” It can maintain a task, use connected services, and operate its own cloud computer. Your personal computer is optional; it is not the dot’s power source.

Consequently, battery-drain symptoms do not establish a fault with the OpenAI feature. “Stay charged” usually means one of two things:
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- You are using “charged” figuratively to mean that the dot remains active, connected, or responsive.
- You are referring to a different physical product. In that case, software troubleshooting for OpenAI’s dot cannot diagnose its power problem.
Do not buy a cable, power bank, replacement battery, or repair kit for the software feature. Get the product name and model number first if the object in front of you is physical.
Identify which failure you have
A dot can appear stuck for different reasons. Classifying the symptom prevents you from resetting a working task or changing network settings unnecessarily.
| What you observe | Most likely area to check | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The task shows a question, approval, sign-in, or connection request | Task is waiting for your input | Open that task and complete or reject the request deliberately |
| The dot is marked paused | Task state or schedule | Resume it and review its saved instructions |
| A task needs local files or a local browser | Local-computer authorization or availability | Authorize the computer in the ChatGPT desktop app and keep it online |
| A connected service cannot be read or changed | App account, permissions, or expired connection | Reconnect the intended account and verify the requested permission |
| ChatGPT itself is slow, blank, or unable to send | Service, browser, device, or network | Check OpenAI Status, then test a clean browser or another network |
| Only phone calling fails | Calling path | Use the text conversation and continue typing |
| A separate object will not hold a charge | Unknown physical product | Identify its manufacturer and exact model before hardware troubleshooting |
1. Check for a wider ChatGPT incident
Before changing a task or reconnecting accounts, check OpenAI Status for an active incident affecting ChatGPT, conversations, tasks, or connected services. This is the fastest way to distinguish a local problem from a platform problem.
A healthy status page does not prove that your individual account or feature is working. Status figures are aggregate; a partial outage, account-specific error, regional problem, or newly deployed feature can affect some users while the overall page appears normal. Treat the status page as one diagnostic signal, not a guarantee.
If an incident is listed, avoid repeatedly editing the task or revoking permissions. Record the incident time, leave the task unchanged where possible, and retry after service recovery. If no incident is listed, continue with the task-level checks below.
2. Open the affected task and look for a decision it is waiting on
Each dot task has its own conversation. A task that looks silent may be waiting rather than broken. Open the specific task, not merely a new general ChatGPT chat, and read its latest message or status.

Pending approvals
A dot may pause before an action that needs your approval. The request can involve sending, modifying, purchasing, publishing, or another consequential operation. Review what will happen, then approve it only if the scope is correct. If you decline, give the task a replacement instruction in that same conversation so it has the necessary context.
Sign-in or verification requests
A cloud-browser session used by the dot is separate from your normal browser session. If the task asks you to sign in, complete the request in the dot’s environment, including any verification step that the service requires. Being signed in to the same website in your personal browser does not automatically sign the dot in.
Connection requests
When a task needs a connected app or website, open the connection request and inspect the account and requested permissions. A request that was ignored, denied, or allowed for the wrong account can leave the task unable to proceed.
Task-specific corrections
Give corrections and missing information inside the affected task. Starting a new conversation does not necessarily transfer the task’s saved instructions, context, or schedule. State the desired outcome, the relevant files or accounts, and any changed constraints in the existing task thread.
3. Resume a paused task and verify its schedule
If the dot is explicitly paused, use the task controls to resume it. For recurring work, inspect the saved schedule as well as the latest conversation. A task can be active in principle but scheduled for a later time, limited to particular days, or paused after an earlier decision.
- Confirm the task is enabled rather than paused or completed.
- Check the next-run time and time zone if it is recurring.
- Read the latest task message for a request that must be answered before the next run.
- Update obsolete instructions in the task conversation instead of creating several conflicting copies.
If resuming produces an immediate error, note the exact wording and time. That information is more useful to Support than a description such as “it just does not work.”

4. Authorize a local computer only when the task needs it
A dot has its own cloud computer and can work without access to your device. Local-computer access is optional and should be checked only when the task requires files, software, a browser session, or another resource on your personal computer.
Authorize the computer
- On the computer that the dot must use, open the ChatGPT desktop app.
- Open the dot profile or the affected dot task.
- Under Computers, choose Allow access.
- Confirm the authorization when prompted.
- Leave that computer online and keep ChatGPT open while the dot is using it.
The dot cannot use a computer that is shut down, asleep without the required connection, disconnected from the network, or running with the desktop app closed.
Understand “Offline” status
An Offline label means the local computer is currently unavailable. It does not, by itself, mean that permission was revoked. Bring the computer online, open the ChatGPT desktop app, and check the connection again before removing and re-adding authorization.

Do not confuse separate permissions
Connecting a computer to another OpenAI coding tool or enabling a workplace synchronization feature does not grant the dot local-computer access. Those are separate connection paths. Authorize the computer from the dot’s own Computers control.
5. Repair a connected-app or website connection
When a task uses an external app, determine whether it needs to read information, change information, or send an action. Permissions that allow reading may not allow editing, deleting, sending, or creating.
Verify the intended account
Open the supported app connection and confirm that it is linked to the account containing the files or records the task needs. A connection to a personal account will not expose a work account’s data, even when both accounts use the same email provider.

- Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Check the required permission
Compare the requested operation with the granted scope. For example, a task that must update a record needs more than read-only access. If the app offers granular permissions, grant only the minimum scope that enables the requested action.

If the task presents a reconnection request, open it and reconnect rather than repeatedly retrying the task. Authentication tokens can expire, be revoked, or become invalid after an account-security change. After reconnecting, return to the original task and retry there so its context is preserved.
Handle cloud-browser sign-in separately
The dot’s cloud-browser login is independent of your personal browser profile. Complete the requested login or verification in the environment the task provides. Browser extensions, saved passwords, or an already authenticated personal tab cannot be assumed to apply.
6. Fix ChatGPT when it will not connect or respond
If the dot and ordinary ChatGPT conversations both fail to load or send, treat the issue as a general ChatGPT connection problem.
Retry without destroying the conversation
- Refresh the page or restart the ChatGPT app.
- Retry the failed response once.
- If the conversation is very long, start a new chat for a simple test. Keep the original task intact so you do not lose its instructions or history.
- Send a short test message. If ordinary chat works but the dot does not, return to the dot-specific checks rather than continuing with network changes.
Remove common network interference temporarily
VPNs, HTTP proxies, secure-DNS tools, browser extensions, corporate security filters, and content-inspection systems can block streaming responses, authentication redirects, or connections to required services. Disable one suspected layer temporarily, then retry. Re-enable it after testing; do not leave a security control disabled as a permanent “fix.” On a managed work network, ask the administrator to test the service through an approved route instead of bypassing policy.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a clean comparison
- Open a private or incognito browser window with extensions disabled by default.
- Try another supported browser.
- Try the ChatGPT app or a different device.
- Test a different network, such as a phone hotspot, if your account and policy permit it.
- If the problem follows the account across browsers, devices, and networks, stop changing local settings and prepare a Support report.
Clear stale browser data
If a private window works but the normal browser does not, clear the site’s cache and stored data, sign in again, and retest. This removes stale scripts or authentication state; it does not erase the dot’s server-side task instructions. You may need to sign in again to ChatGPT and connected services.

7. Use text when calling alone fails
Calling is an interface to the dot, not a requirement for the task itself. Open the dot conversation and select the phone button to start a call. If calling fails while the conversation loads normally, continue by typing in that same conversation. Include the outcome you expected, the point at which the call failed, and any visible error so the task has a usable record.
8. What to do when only a physical product will not stay charged
OpenAI’s dot documentation does not identify a chargeable physical unit. If you are holding a device, the correct troubleshooting path belongs to its actual manufacturer, not to OpenAI’s software instructions.
Before attempting a reset, battery replacement, or charger substitution, record:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Manufacturer and complete model number
- Whether the device has a removable battery or sealed enclosure
- Charger and cable markings, if any
- What the indicator light or screen shows while charging
- Whether it powers on when connected directly to a known-good power source
- Any recent drop, liquid exposure, heat event, firmware update, or battery swelling
Do not open a swollen, hot, leaking, or damaged battery. Keep it away from combustible materials and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions. Without the product identity, a claim that it is a “ChatGPT dot” is not enough to select a safe voltage, cable, battery, or repair procedure.
9. When to contact OpenAI Support
Contact Support after you have checked status, inspected the task, verified the relevant permissions, and compared browsers, devices, or networks as appropriate. A concise diagnostic report helps Support separate a task configuration issue from a service or account issue.
Include:
- The dot task name or a description that distinguishes it from other tasks
- The exact symptom and the last successful action
- Whether ordinary ChatGPT chats work
- Whether the issue occurs in the desktop app, browser, or both
- Whether local-computer access is required and what status it shows
- The connected app, account type, and permission requested, without exposing passwords or secrets
- Your time zone, approximate timestamps, device and browser/app versions, and network type
- The exact error text and screenshots with private information redacted
If the issue occurs only on a managed network, say so. If it persists on multiple independent networks and devices, say that too; those comparisons materially narrow the cause.
A compact decision path
- Is it OpenAI’s software dot? If no, identify the physical product and follow its manufacturer’s support path. If yes, continue.
- Is ChatGPT broadly unavailable? Check OpenAI Status and retry after a listed incident is resolved.
- Does the task show a request or paused state? Open it, complete the appropriate approval or sign-in, or resume it.
- Does it need your computer? Authorize that computer under Computers in the ChatGPT desktop app, keep it online, and leave ChatGPT open.
- Does it need an app or website? Verify the intended account, permission scope, and connection; reconnect if requested.
- Do all ChatGPT functions fail? Restart, test a clean browser and another network, remove temporary interference, and contact Support if the failure follows you.
- Does only calling fail? Continue in the text conversation.
How to avoid the most common mistakes
- Do not treat a paused task as a dead device; inspect its latest request first.
- Do not authorize a local computer when the task can run entirely on the dot’s cloud computer.
- Do not assume your personal browser login is shared with the dot’s cloud browser.
- Do not grant broad app permissions when the task needs only a narrower operation.
- Do not delete and recreate a task before recording its instructions, schedule, and pending request.
- Do not buy charging accessories for OpenAI’s software feature.
- Do not publish passwords, access tokens, private files, or unredacted screenshots in a support request.
The practical fix is therefore determined by the failure surface: answer the task’s pending request, restore the specific computer or app connection, repair a general ChatGPT network path, or identify the separate physical product. “Charging” is not a documented property of OpenAI’s dot.
