When a Ghost blog stops after a Node.js update, do not immediately reinstall Ghost or delete its database. First preserve the site, identify the Node.js, Ghost, and Ghost-CLI versions, and capture the first fatal log line. Then run the Ghost process in the foreground, align Node.js with the installed Ghost release, rebuild dependencies through Ghost-CLI, and verify configuration and database paths. If a Ghost upgrade was interrupted, ghost update --rollback is the documented first recovery attempt.
The newest Node.js release is not automatically the right one for an older Ghost installation. The procedure below separates a runtime mismatch from dependency, configuration, migration, theme, and database problems so that you can recover without turning a startup failure into data loss.

Why a Node.js update can break Ghost
Ghost is a Node.js application, but its working state also includes native dependencies, a database, JSON configuration, a process manager, themes, and integrations. Updating the Node.js binary changes the runtime that loads all of those pieces. A site can therefore fail even when no Ghost files were intentionally edited.
- Version incompatibility: the installed Ghost release may not support the new Node.js major version.
- Native-module mismatch: packages compiled under the previous Node.js ABI may need to be rebuilt.
- Different executable for the service: a shell using nvm can see one Node.js binary while systemd or another process manager starts Ghost with another.
- Configuration or path errors: a changed environment can expose an incorrect public URL, database credential, mail setting, or SQLite path.
- Upgrade state: a Ghost update that stopped halfway can leave application files and migrations out of step.
- Compatibility changes elsewhere: a major Ghost release can require changes to a custom theme, integration, or headless front end.
Ghost-CLI documentation notes that major releases arrive every 12–18 months and break backwards compatibility, requiring a more involved process that includes backups and theme compatibility. Treat a Node.js change and a Ghost major-version change as separate events until the logs prove otherwise.

Before changing anything: preserve the site
Perform recovery as the account that owns the Ghost installation. Do not run Ghost-CLI commands as an unrelated user and then attempt to repair ownership later. Record the current state before changing the runtime or dependencies.
Capture versions and service state
node -v
ghost version
ghost cli versionUse the version command supported by your installed Ghost-CLI release if the last line is rejected; the important result is the Ghost-CLI version, not the exact wording of the command. Also record the service status from the process manager used by your server and note whether the failure began immediately after the Node.js change.
Create a Ghost backup and copy the content directory
ghost backupGhost-CLI says this backup includes content JSON, member CSV, installed themes, media, and routes.yaml, redirects.yaml, or redirects.json. Copy the complete content directory to a separate location as well. Keep the backup outside the live installation or on another host so that a failed repair cannot overwrite the only copy.
Do not skip this step because the site appears to contain only posts. Members, images, themes, routes, and redirects are all part of a usable restoration. Take another backup immediately before a destructive rollback, forced download, reinstall, or database operation.

Confirm which Node.js binary the service actually runs
A shell changed by nvm is not necessarily the environment used by systemd or another process manager. Inspect the service definition and its logs for the executable path, environment variables, working directory, and user. Compare that path with the result of
command -v nodeandnode -vin the Ghost installation account.command -v node node -vIf the interactive shell reports a supported version but the service points to an older or newer binary, fix the service environment rather than changing application files. Restarting repeatedly without resolving this mismatch only produces the same failure under a different process.

Expose the first real error
Try a normal restart once:
ghost restartIf it fails, follow Ghost-CLI’s documented advice and run the installation in the foreground:
ghost runRecord the first fatal error and its stack trace. Later messages about a proxy, a refused connection, or a health check often describe the consequence of the application not starting, not the cause. Stop troubleshooting the web server until the first application error is understood.

Align Node.js with the installed Ghost release
Use a Node.js major version supported by the Ghost release already installed. Do not assume that “latest” is compatible. Check the release’s Node.js compatibility guidance and switch the service and the shell to the same supported binary.
After a runtime change, dependencies may need to be rebuilt. Update Ghost-CLI only with the installation command supported by the current Ghost documentation, then use Ghost-CLI’s own update or reinstall workflow. Do not copy a random
node_modulesdirectory from another server or from a different Node.js major version; native modules can be ABI-specific.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. ghost runbefore returning to background service mode. -
Validate production configuration and the database connection
Open
config.production.jsonand compare it with the values used before the Node.js update. Check each of these independently:Rank #3

- the public URL, including protocol and hostname;
- the database client, database name, host, port, user, and password;
- mail transport and credentials;
- content and other filesystem paths;
- environment variables supplied by the service definition.
Ghost configuration is JSON. A missing comma, invalid quote, or wrong value can prevent startup even when Node.js itself is correct. For SQLite, verify that the configured database path still points to the existing file and that the service user can read and write the directory. A changed working directory or ownership can make a healthy database appear to be missing.
Apply configuration changes with:
ghost restartIf the restart still fails, return to

Roll back an interrupted Ghost update
If the incident began during a Ghost update rather than during a standalone Node.js change, use the documented rollback command:
ghost update --rollbackTake a fresh backup first if the command will alter the installation. A rollback restores the previous Ghost version when Ghost-CLI still has the required release available; it does not repair an unrelated database, permission, or service-environment problem.
Ghost-CLI also documents two narrowly useful options:
ghost update --forceredownloads Ghost files. Use it only after confirming the runtime and backup, because it replaces application files and will not fix a bad database credential.ghost update --no-restartcompletes the update without controlling the service restart. This is useful when you need to inspect files or coordinate the restart yourself.

Protect migration history
Do not delete migration rows, edit an applied migration, or mark a migration as complete just to make startup proceed. Ghost’s migration policy states that changing or removing a migration after it has run leaves environments in different database states and can break migration tracking.

If the fatal error identifies a failed or incomplete migration, stop manual database edits. Restore a known-good backup or move through a Ghost version path supported for that installation. Preserve the database copy and logs so that a later import or support investigation has the original state.

Separate application failure from theme and integration failure
First get the core Ghost process to start with
ghost run. Only then test the presentation layer. Switch temporarily to a known-compatible theme and disable a recently changed integration, webhook, or headless client one at a time. Major Ghost releases can introduce breaking changes for custom themes, heavily modified themes, integrations, and headless setups.If the default or known-compatible theme loads while the custom theme fails, repair the theme against the Ghost release instead of changing Node.js again. If the application will not start even without the theme and integrations, continue with runtime, configuration, database, or migration diagnosis.

Restart under the service manager and verify externally
After
ghost runstarts cleanly, stop the foreground process and use the normal service command:Recommended Free Tools

Test the public URL, the admin path, image delivery, member sign-in, and a representative post. A successful process start does not prove that mail, storage paths, or reverse-proxy routing are correct.
Choosing between repair, rollback, and reinstall
The safest option depends on whether the failure is a runtime mismatch, an interrupted update, or an old installation whose upgrade path is no longer reliable.

When a reinstall and import is safer
Ghost recommends a reinstall for very old 0.x–2.x sites and for SQLite used in production on any Ghost version. These cases can have obsolete dependencies, unsupported upgrade jumps, or a database layout that makes repeated in-place repairs riskier than a clean installation.
Prepare the migration
- Run
ghost backupand verify that the backup file can be read. - Copy the complete
contentdirectory, including media and themes. - Export content in a format your target Ghost version accepts.
- Record the public URL, mail settings, custom routes, redirects, integrations, and any reverse-proxy configuration.
- Keep the old database untouched until the new installation has been tested.
Build and validate the new installation
Install a Ghost release with a supported Node.js version, import the content, restore themes and media, and re-create configuration deliberately rather than copying an obsolete production file wholesale. Verify posts, images, members, routes, redirects, mail, and administrative access on a staging hostname or protected test address before changing DNS or the reverse proxy.
Do not use a reinstall to conceal a migration error. Preserve the original database and logs; if the import reports a schema or content problem, you need the source state to recover.

How to prevent the next Node.js incident
- Record the current Node.js, Ghost, and Ghost-CLI versions before any upgrade.
- Read the Ghost release’s Node.js compatibility guidance before selecting a runtime.
- Run and verify
ghost backupbefore changing Node.js, Ghost-CLI, dependencies, configuration, or migrations. - Keep a copy of the full
contentdirectory outside the live installation. - Upgrade a staging copy first when the site uses custom themes, integrations, or a headless front end.
- Test the service’s actual executable path; do not rely only on the interactive shell’s nvm selection.
- Keep rollback and restore procedures written down, including who owns the installation and which process manager starts it.
- Never edit applied migration records to bypass an error.
When managed Ghost hosting is the better fit
Self-hosting gives you control over the Node.js runtime, process manager, database, and filesystem, but you also own compatibility work and recovery. Ghost(Pro) is the managed alternative for readers who do not want to maintain that stack. Ghost says it handles minor updates and runs a compatibility check before major upgrades. It does not remove the need to keep content and theme exports, but it shifts routine runtime maintenance and upgrade checks to the provider.
