A Bosch cordless tool that will not charge is usually caused by a power connection, poor battery contact, temperature outside the charging range, an incompatible pack, or a failed battery or charger. Work through the checks in order: verify the outlet and charger, reseat and clean the battery contacts, let the pack reach 0–45 °C (32–113 °F), identify the indicator pattern, and test a known-good compatible battery. Stop and use Bosch authorized service if an error returns, the charger has no power after outlet checks, or a cord or housing is damaged.

Start with the symptom you can see

Leave the battery disconnected while you identify what the charger is doing. The light pattern narrows the likely cause, but indicator meanings vary by charger model. The table below combines Bosch’s documented possibilities and the corresponding first action.

Charger symptom Documented possibilities What to do
No indicator lights Defective wall outlet, mains cable or charger; plug not fully inserted Test a known-working outlet, push the plug fully into the socket and inspect the cable. If there is still no light, arrange authorized service.
Red light flashing Internal charger error, incorrect battery insertion, dirty contacts or defective battery Remove and reinstall the pack, unplug and reconnect the charger once, and dry-clean the contacts. If the flashing returns, stop using it and contact authorized service.
Red light steady Battery temperature outside the permitted charging range Wait for the battery to cool or warm naturally until it is between 0 and 45 °C (32 and 113 °F), then retry.
Green light steady on a GAL18V20 Battery fully charged, no battery present, incompatible battery or temperature outside the permitted range Check whether a pack is seated, confirm its temperature and verify that it is a genuine compatible Bosch pack. Consult the manual for the exact model.
Green light blinking on a GAL18V20 Fast charging in progress Keep the pack connected until the indicator becomes steady. The blinking light does not provide an exact percentage.

A light that changes after reseating the pack is useful evidence: it points to insertion or contact rather than proving that the battery is healthy. Conversely, an unchanged error with two compatible packs makes the charger, cord or outlet more suspect.

1. Verify the power source before touching the battery

If no charger indicator illuminates, begin at the wall rather than opening the charger. Bosch documentation identifies a defective outlet, mains cable or charger, as well as an incompletely inserted plug, as possible causes.

  1. Unplug the charger from the wall.
  2. Plug another appliance that you know works into the same outlet. If it does not operate, use a different outlet and resolve the household power problem first.
  3. Insert the charger plug fully into the working socket. A loose connection can leave every indicator dark.
  4. Check the charger cable and plug for visible cuts, crushed sections, exposed conductors or heat damage. Do not continue using a damaged cable.
  5. Reconnect the charger without a battery and observe the indicators. If the charger remains completely dark on a known-working outlet, treat the charger, cable or internal power circuitry as the likely fault and arrange Bosch authorized service.

Do not bypass the charger, bridge its terminals or connect the battery directly to a power source. Those actions defeat the charger’s protection circuitry and create a fire, shock or battery-damage hazard.

2. Reseat the battery so the charger can detect it

An incorrectly inserted pack is a documented reason for no charging. The battery must slide all the way into the guide rails and lock in place; partial engagement can look like a charger failure.

  1. Disconnect the charger from the wall before handling the contacts.
  2. Press the battery-release button and remove the pack completely.
  3. Align the pack with the charger’s rails and push it in until it is fully seated and locked. Do not force it at an angle.
  4. Reconnect the charger and watch for a normal charging indication.
  5. If the indicator still reports an error, remove and reinsert the pack once more to rule out a marginal mechanical contact.

A pack that will not latch, rocks in the rails or has visibly damaged plastic should not be wedged into place. Use a replacement pack or service assessment rather than modifying the housing.

3. Clean the contacts without damaging them

Dust, debris or oxidation between the charger contacts and battery terminals can interrupt the low-voltage detection and charging connection. Bosch’s instructions call for dry cleaning and also suggest inserting and removing the battery several times to improve contact.

  1. Unplug the charger from the wall.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Inspect the metal contacts on both the battery and charger under good light.
  4. Wipe away loose, dry debris with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Keep liquids, sprays and metal tools away from the terminals.
  5. Reinsert and remove the battery several times with the charger still unplugged, then seat it fully.
  6. Reconnect the charger and test again.

Never scrape the terminals with a conductive object, short two terminals together or operate a charger with wet contacts. If a contact is bent, burned, deeply corroded or loose, stop the test and have the component assessed by an authorized service centre.

4. Bring the battery into the permitted charging temperature

Bosch charger manuals specify a charging range of 0–45 °C (32–113 °F). A steady red temperature indicator means the pack is outside that range. This is a protective condition, not a signal to force charging.

  1. Remove the battery from the charger if it is connected.
  2. Move it to a dry place at ordinary room temperature, away from a heater, direct sun, freezer or other heat source.
  3. Allow the pack to warm or cool naturally. Do not use water, a heat gun, a radiator or a freezer to change its temperature.
  4. Once the battery is within 0–45 °C, reinstall it and check the indicator.

A recently used pack may be warm even when the room feels comfortable; heavy tool use can raise the pack temperature. A pack stored in an unheated shed may be below the lower limit. The charger’s steady red indication should clear only after the battery itself returns to the permitted range.

Bosch’s official guidance states: “Wait until the battery temperature is back within the permitted charging temperature range (0–45 °C).” The figure is a model-specific operating requirement in Bosch charger instructions, so use the manual for your exact charger if its labeling differs.

5. Interpret a flashing red indicator and perform one reset

On Bosch chargers covered by the cited instructions, a flashing red indicator can represent an internal charger error, incorrect insertion, dirty contacts or a defective battery. Because the same pattern has several possible causes, perform the external checks before declaring a component failed.

  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Unplug the charger from the outlet and leave it disconnected briefly.
  3. Confirm that the outlet works and that the plug and cable are intact.
  4. Dry-clean the contacts and reseat the battery as described above.
  5. Reconnect the charger and observe the light.

If the red light begins flashing again after this single unplug-and-reconnect attempt, do not repeatedly cycle the charger or disassemble it. Bosch directs users to an authorized service centre when the error persists. Repeated flashing can come from the charger or the pack, and internal diagnosis requires equipment and procedures not provided for user repair.

6. Confirm that the battery belongs to the charger’s platform

Visual similarity does not establish electrical compatibility. Bosch sells distinct battery platforms, including Bosch Professional 18V and POWER FOR ALL systems, and a pack from one platform may not be intended for a charger from the other. Voltage, connector geometry, control electronics and charger firmware all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the GAL18V20, Bosch instructs users to “Confirm battery compatibility with charger by checking list of genuine Bosch battery packs outlined on page 5 of this manual.” Check the model number printed on the charger, the battery’s platform markings and the compatibility list for that exact charger. Do not rely on a pack merely fitting the rails.

  • Match the charger model number, not only the brand name.
  • Match the nominal voltage and platform family shown on the labels.
  • Use a genuine Bosch pack identified as compatible in the charger’s instructions.
  • Do not substitute a battery from another voltage or platform, even if its casing appears similar.

If the compatibility information is missing or ambiguous, pause the test and ask Bosch or an authorized service provider to identify the correct combination. A compatibility mistake can produce a no-charge indication without proving that either component is defective.

7. Use a known-good compatible pack to isolate the failed part

Once the outlet, seating, contacts, temperature and platform have been checked, a second compatible battery is the most useful user-level diagnostic. It separates a battery fault from a charger-side fault without opening either component.

  1. Obtain a battery that is known to be genuine and compatible with your exact charger model. Do not use an unverified pack simply because it has the same nominal voltage.
  2. Check that the test pack is between 0 and 45 °C (32 and 113 °F).
  3. Insert it fully and observe the indicator.
  4. Compare the result with the original battery under the same conditions.
Test result Most useful conclusion Next action
Test pack charges normally; original pack does not The original battery is the likely failed component. Replace the original with a compatible Bosch pack or have it evaluated by authorized service.
Neither compatible pack charges The charger, mains cable or outlet is more likely at fault. Retest the outlet once, then arrange charger/service support rather than buying another battery first.
Both packs show a temperature warning The packs may both be outside 0–45 °C, or the charger may need diagnosis. Bring both to room temperature and retest; seek service if the warning persists.
Only one pack flashes red while the other behaves normally The flashing pack is the likely battery-side problem. Stop using that pack and pursue replacement or service.

This test identifies the more likely failed component; it is not an authorization to repair a lithium-ion pack internally. A battery that is swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot or physically damaged should be isolated from use and handled through Bosch service guidance.

8. GAL18V20 indicator behavior in detail

The GAL18V20 documentation gives two green-light states that are easy to misread. A blinking green indicator means fast charging is in progress. Leave the pack connected until the light turns steady; blinking does not disclose an exact state-of-charge percentage.

A steady green indicator on this model can mean that the pack is fully charged, that no battery is present, that the inserted battery is incompatible, or that the battery temperature is outside the permitted range. Check the physical presence of the pack, its temperature and its compatibility before assuming it is full. If the result conflicts with the battery’s behavior in the tool, test the pack in the correct compatible charger or seek service.

Other Bosch charger models may use different labels, colors or timing. Treat the model-specific owner’s manual as authoritative rather than transferring GAL18V20 meanings to another charger.

9. Decide whether to replace the battery, replace the charger or seek service

Replace or service the battery

A genuine compatible pack that fails while another compatible pack charges normally is the strongest replacement case. Bosch lists a defective battery as a replacement situation. Use the exact platform and voltage required by your tool and charger; do not buy solely from a similar-looking connector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Service the charger or cable

A charger that remains dark on a known-working outlet, or one that produces a recurring internal-error indication with more than one compatible pack, should be assessed by Bosch authorized service. The same applies to a damaged mains cable, cracked housing, burnt odor or signs of overheating. User disassembly can expose mains voltage and may defeat safety certification.

Do not keep testing a damaged pack

Stop immediately if the battery casing is cracked, swollen, leaking, smoking or becoming abnormally hot. Do not puncture, open, short, freeze or heat it. Keep it away from ignition sources and obtain handling instructions from Bosch or an authorized service provider.

10. Replacement checklist for Bosch 18V charging equipment

When a component is confirmed as failed, compare replacements on the details that determine whether they will actually work:

Check Why it matters What to verify before purchase
Platform Bosch Professional 18V and POWER FOR ALL are separate system families. The platform marking on the tool, battery and charger.
Nominal voltage A similar connector does not make a different-voltage pack safe or compatible. The voltage printed on the original battery and charger instructions.
Exact charger compatibility Indicator behavior and supported packs are model-specific. The charger model number and its genuine Bosch battery list.
Failure isolation Replacing the wrong component leaves the original fault unresolved. Results from the known-good compatible-pack test.
Region and warranty Service channels and warranty terms vary by region. Your local Bosch service destination and the applicable purchase documentation.

The Bosch GAL18V20 is a documented Bosch 18V charger, but its name alone does not establish compatibility with every Bosch 18V battery. Match your own charger model and platform first. A compatible Bosch 18V replacement battery belongs after, not before, the known-good-pack test unless the original pack is visibly damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. A complete decision path

Use this order to avoid buying parts based on a misleading light:

  1. No lights: prove the outlet works, fully insert the plug and inspect the cable. If the charger stays dark, seek service.
  2. Steady red: let the battery return naturally to 0–45 °C (32–113 °F), then retry.
  3. Flashing red: reseat the pack, dry-clean contacts and unplug/reconnect once. Recurrence requires service.
  4. Green on a GAL18V20: distinguish blinking fast charge from steady charged/absent/incompatible/temperature states using the model’s manual.
  5. Suspected mismatch: verify the Bosch platform, voltage and exact charger list.
  6. Still unresolved: test one known-good compatible pack. Replace or service the component indicated by the result.

This sequence keeps mains troubleshooting, battery handling and compatibility checks separate. It also prevents a failed charger from being mistaken for several failed batteries, or an incompatible pack from being mistaken for a defective charger.
