Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted 7 Days to Die servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
CSMM cannot start or repair the 7 Days to Die dedicated server; it can only manage and monitor a server process that is already running and reachable. Start with the dedicated-server console or log, then check that the game versions match, the required ports are open, and CSMM itself completed its production setup. If the server is healthy but one player still cannot launch the game, troubleshoot that player’s installation separately.
What CSMM can—and cannot—load
“Catalysm’s Server Manager & Monitor (CSMM) is a management and monitoring portal for 7 Days to Die servers.” It provides a web management layer around a dedicated server. The underlying 7 Days to Die process must finish starting, listen on its game and management interfaces, and be reachable from the CSMM host. A CSMM page that spins, reports a timeout, or shows an offline server therefore does not prove that CSMM is the original failure.

There are three separate failure domains:
- Game-server failure: the dedicated process crashes, hangs during world loading, or never binds its ports.
- Network failure: the process is running, but a firewall, router, NAT rule, security group, or incorrect address prevents CSMM from reaching it.
- CSMM failure: the CSMM application, database migration, credentials, or server entry is incomplete or incorrect.
Keep those domains separate. Testing a player’s game client will not repair a blocked server port, and changing CSMM credentials will not fix a dedicated-server crash.
Use this recovery order
- Open the dedicated-server console or log. Confirm whether the process reaches a running state. Save the error output before changing settings. Also capture the output of CSMM’s documented version command, because CSMM support uses both pieces of information when diagnosing a connection.
- Check the game versions. The version installed on the connecting PC must equal the version installed on the game server. Update or roll back the mismatched side, restart the dedicated server, and test again.
- Verify the ports end to end. Compare the server’s XML configuration with the host firewall and any router or cloud-forwarding rules. A changed port in one place must be changed everywhere.
- Validate CSMM initialization. On a self-hosted installation, confirm the required Node.js/runtime prerequisites, install the production dependencies, run the one-time database migration for a fresh database, and start CSMM in production mode. Inspect the startup output for errors.
- Recheck the CSMM server entry. Confirm the address, game port, web/API or telnet details, and credentials. Do not assume default values when a hosting company supplied custom connection details.
- Test the player client independently. If the server console is healthy and CSMM can connect, temporarily remove mods, review antivirus exclusions, and clear the documented residual settings location under
%appdata%7DaysToDiefor the affected player.
Work through the list in this order. It prevents a client-side symptom from obscuring a server-side outage and gives you a known-good checkpoint after each change.

First decide whether the dedicated server is actually running
Read the console before the CSMM dashboard
Launch the dedicated-server console supplied by your operating system or host, or open its current log file. Look for a clean startup sequence, world-generation or world-load completion, and a message indicating that the server is listening. A process that exits, repeatedly restarts, freezes while loading a world, or reports an exception is a game-server problem; CSMM cannot connect until it is resolved.
Record the complete error block rather than only the last line. Include the game-server version, the time of the failure, and whether the world was newly created or previously working. If you later contact CSMM support, provide that output together with the output of CSMM’s version command.
Use a simple isolation test
- If the console never reaches a running state, stop troubleshooting CSMM and repair the dedicated server first.
- If the console reaches a running state but CSMM shows a timeout, move to version and network checks.
- If CSMM connects and displays the server but one person cannot join, investigate that player’s client rather than restarting CSMM repeatedly.
Make the game versions match exactly
CSMM’s server-setup guidance requires the game version on the connecting PC to equal the game-server version. This is a compatibility requirement between the game client and dedicated server, not merely a recommendation to keep software “up to date.” A client on a newer build can fail against an older server, and rolling back only the client can produce the same result.
- Read the version shown by the dedicated-server console or installation.
- Check the version displayed by the affected PC’s game client.
- Update the older side, or deliberately roll back the newer side, so both values match.
- Restart the dedicated server after changing its files, then close and relaunch the PC game before testing.
Do not change several unrelated settings while testing the version fix. A clean restart after the version alignment tells you whether compatibility was the cause.

Open and forward the ports CSMM needs
The current CSMM server-setup documentation lists these defaults:
| Purpose | Default port | Protocol | What must be reachable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 Days to Die connection | 26900 | TCP | The address and port used for the server connection |
| 7 Days to Die gameplay range | 26900–26902 | UDP | The gameplay traffic range configured for the server |
| CSMM or Alloc’s web map | 8082 | TCP | The web/API endpoint when that service is enabled |
These are documented defaults, not universal values. If the server XML uses custom ports, the custom values replace the table’s defaults. Mirror them in every layer: the operating-system firewall, router or NAT forwarding, cloud security group, and the CSMM server entry.

Check each network layer
- Server binding: verify in the console or log that the process actually listens on the configured ports. A firewall rule cannot help if the process never bound the port.
- Host firewall: allow the required TCP and UDP traffic on the correct network profile. Ensure an old rule is not limited to a different interface or port.
- Router or NAT: forward the external port to the server’s current internal address. A DHCP address change can silently invalidate an otherwise correct rule.
- Cloud or datacenter firewall: if the machine is hosted remotely, check provider-level security groups in addition to the operating-system firewall.
- CSMM entry: use the reachable address, the actual game port, and the correct web/API or telnet details rather than copying a public website address.
A timeout generally indicates that traffic is not reaching the expected listener or that replies are being blocked. An immediate refusal more often means the host is reachable but no process is listening on that port. Treat both as clues, not as proof of one specific cause.
Finish a fresh self-hosted CSMM installation
A newly installed CSMM instance has more prerequisites than an existing, working installation. The self-host documentation states that production mode is important “for security reasons, application stability and data persistence.” Skipping initialization can leave a web page available while the application cannot read its database or connect to a server.

Install the runtime and production dependencies
Confirm that the Node.js/runtime prerequisites required by the CSMM release are installed, then install the project’s production dependencies using the project’s installation instructions. Run these commands from the CSMM application directory and verify that dependency installation exits successfully; a warning or a missing native module can prevent startup later.
Run the initial database migration
For a fresh database, run the one-time migration exactly as documented:
NODE_ENV=production npm run db:migrate
Do not treat a migration error as a network timeout. Fix the database connection, permissions, or missing dependency reported by the command before starting the web application.
Start CSMM in production mode
Start the application with:
NODE_ENV=production npm run start
Watch the startup output. Confirm that the process remains running, binds the expected web port, connects to its database, and does not immediately exit. If it fails, preserve the first stack trace and environment error; repeatedly restarting usually hides the useful line.

Check persistence and service supervision
After a successful manual start, make sure the method used to run CSMM keeps the process alive after logout or reboot. A process that worked in an interactive shell but stopped when the shell closed can look like an intermittent connection problem. Validate that the database and configuration files are stored on persistent disk and that the service account can read and write them.
Re-add or correct the server entry in CSMM
Use CSMM’s quick-start flow to validate the server address, game port, web/API or telnet details, and credentials. Enter the values exactly as supplied by the server host or shown in the server configuration. A local self-hosted server may use a private address when CSMM runs on the same network; a remote CSMM instance needs an address routable from that instance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe quick-start method may not be accurate for servers rented from a hosting company. Providers can place the game process behind a proxy, assign a nonstandard port, or expose a separate telnet/API endpoint. Ask the provider for the current game port, management endpoint, credentials, and allowed source addresses instead of assuming 26900 and 8082 apply.
Recheck credentials without exposing them
- Confirm that the username and password belong to the server’s management interface, not the game account.
- Remove accidental spaces when copying values.
- Regenerate a credential only after confirming the endpoint and port; changing a password cannot fix an incorrect address.
- Keep secrets out of screenshots and support posts.
Separate a server outage from a single-player launch problem
If CSMM connects, the dedicated console is healthy, and other players can join, the remaining failure is likely on the affected PC. The official General Troubleshooting guidance dated October 1, 2026 recommends testing the client launch path separately.

Test without mods
Temporarily remove or disable installed mods and launch the unmodified game. A mod can prevent the client from reaching the menu or joining a world even when the server and CSMM are operating normally. Restore mods one group at a time after the clean launch succeeds so the incompatible item is identifiable.
Check antivirus and security software
Review antivirus quarantine and exclusion logs for the game executable and its launcher. Add an exclusion only for trusted, verified game files and undo it if it does not help. Security software can block a client executable, but it cannot explain a CSMM timeout that affects every player.

Clear the documented residual settings location
For a persistent client launch failure, close the game and back up the contents of %appdata%7DaysToDie before clearing the residual settings described by the troubleshooting guidance. This resets local settings without changing the dedicated server’s world or CSMM database. If the problem remains after a clean client test, reinstall or validate the game files using the platform’s repair feature.
When managed hosting is the better repair path
Self-hosting gives you control, but it also makes you responsible for the operating system, firewall, port forwarding, backups, updates, and recovery. Managed hosting can reduce that workload only if the provider exposes the interfaces CSMM needs. Compare the two approaches before moving a world:
| Decision point | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system and file control | Full control of files, services, and runtime | Limited to the controls and file access the provider exposes |
| Port configuration | You can choose and forward the required ports | Provider must permit the game, management, and web/API ports |
| Logs and console/telnet | Direct access if you configure the service | Must be included in the host’s panel or support process |
| CSMM compatibility | You control endpoint, credentials, and firewall rules | Verify CSMM access is supported before purchasing or migrating |
| Backups and recovery | You design and test your own schedule and off-machine copies | Check retention, restoration time, and whether backups include the world and configuration |
| Version pinning | You decide when to update or roll back | Confirm whether the host allows a version to be held during CSMM or mod compatibility work |
| Cost and support | Hardware, bandwidth, and your maintenance time | Recurring provider charge; pricing and support vary by host |
Move only after confirming, in writing, that the host provides console or log access, the required ports, a compatible management endpoint, backups you can restore, and control over the current 7 Days to Die version. A cheaper host that hides logs or blocks the management port can make the same CSMM problem harder to diagnose.
Common symptoms and the next action
| Symptom | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| Dedicated console exits or never finishes loading | Fix the game-server error, test without mods, and verify the world files before changing CSMM. |
| CSMM reports a connection timeout while the server is running | Check the configured address, TCP 26900 default, UDP 26900–26902 range, firewall, NAT, and any custom-port changes. |
| CSMM starts and then immediately stops | Inspect production startup output, runtime dependencies, database migration status, and persistent file permissions. |
| CSMM connects but shows authentication errors | Validate the management endpoint and credentials supplied by the host; do not substitute game-account credentials. |
| Only one player cannot load or join | Align that PC’s game version, disable mods temporarily, inspect antivirus actions, and reset the documented residual client settings. |
| A rented server ignores the documented defaults | Request the provider’s exact game port, web/API or telnet endpoint, credentials, and source-IP requirements. |
What to collect before asking for help
- The dedicated-server version and the connecting PC’s version.
- The complete console or log error around the failure, including timestamps.
- The CSMM version-command output and production startup output.
- The configured game, web/API, and telnet ports, with any custom values identified.
- Whether the server is self-hosted or rented, and whether other players can connect.
- A description of the firewall, NAT, or cloud security-group rules, with passwords and private keys removed.
This evidence lets support determine whether the process, network path, CSMM application, or one player’s client is responsible instead of asking you to reset every component at once.
