Start by checking whether buffering affects one app, one device, or your whole home network. Then test the connection on the TV or streaming device, improve Wi-Fi placement, and restart the equipment before considering a wired connection or calling your internet provider. A faster plan or new router is not automatically the answer.
First, find out what is affected
Try another streaming app on the same TV, then try the affected service on another device using the same home network. These comparisons help narrow the cause, but they are clues rather than proof: an app outage or a device-specific fault can produce the same pattern.
- Only one app buffers: Check that service’s playback guidance and install available app or device updates.
- Several apps buffer on one TV: Focus first on that device’s Wi-Fi link, software, and connection test.
- Several devices or services have trouble: Check for competing internet activity, router or connection problems, and possible ISP issues.
During the comparison, pause downloads, video calls, or other heavy internet use on other devices and see whether playback improves. Prime Video includes pausing other internet activity as a troubleshooting step. Prime Video playback troubleshooting.

When the app offers a network check on your TV or streaming device, use it there. A speed test on a phone or computer may not reflect the TV’s Wi-Fi signal or the route it uses to reach the service.

Netflix recommends a stable connection of 15 Mbps or higher for Netflix UHD/4K. That is Netflix’s service-specific recommendation, not a universal threshold for every streaming provider or a guarantee against buffering. If the TV’s result is below it, pause other internet use and contact your ISP if the measured speed is lower than your expected service. A single test is only a snapshot: an unstable connection, interference, software trouble, or a service-side problem can still interrupt a stream. Improve the Wi-Fi path
Try one placement change at a time, then replay the same content. That makes it easier to tell whether the change helped.

- Move the router closer to the TV or streaming device if practical.
- Place the router in an open, elevated spot, such as a shelf or desk, rather than on the floor or inside a cabinet.
- Move it away from appliances and other wireless devices where possible.
- Avoid placing the router or TV behind metal, inside a recess, or where walls and other obstructions block the signal.
- Keep the TV within the router’s usable range; a signal that reaches other rooms may still be weak where the TV sits.
Netflix and YouTube both recommend considering placement, distance, and interference when a connection is unreliable. See Netflix’s connection guidance and YouTube’s video troubleshooting guidance. These checks do not establish that your router is obsolete, so try them before shopping for replacement equipment.

Restart the device and network equipment
- Close the streaming app and restart the TV or streaming device.
- Unplug the modem and, if separate, the router from power for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the equipment and wait until its indicator lights settle.
- Open the app and retry the same stream.

Update software and check service-specific issues
Install available updates for the TV or streaming device and the streaming app. If the problem is limited to one service, follow that service’s instructions rather than assuming Wi-Fi is the cause.
For Prime Video, check whether the same account is being used to play the title on other devices. Its troubleshooting guidance also identifies VPN or proxy use and an incorrect device date or time as possible checks for certain playback errors; those are service-specific possibilities, not the default explanation for Wi-Fi buffering. On hotel, café, school, or other public networks, access policies may block video services. Hotspot, cellular, and satellite connections may also have limitations relevant to streaming; Netflix flags public-network restrictions and connection capability in its connection guidance.
Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If your TV or streaming device supports Ethernet, connect it directly to the router and retry the same stream. Check the exact device for an Ethernet port; some setups may require an adapter. A cable is useful here as a comparison, not a guaranteed fix: it will not resolve weak broadband service, a streaming outage, or a device problem.

If playback is stable over Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, that points toward wireless coverage or interference, though it does not prove a single cause. If other devices still buffer while the TV is wired, the issue may be broader. Netflix recommends telling your ISP whether the affected device is on Wi-Fi or a direct cable connection. When to contact your internet provider
Contact your ISP if the trouble affects several devices or continues after the basic checks, especially when a connection test is below the speed you expect. Give the support representative details that help distinguish a home Wi-Fi issue from a wider connection problem:
- When buffering occurs and which apps or services are affected.
- Whether other devices on the same network have the same problem.
- The speed-test result, when you measured it, and whether the test ran on the TV or another device.
- Whether the TV connects by Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Whether restarting the modem and router changed anything.
