When a controller does not work in the 4DEAD Demo, the quickest reliable path is to launch the demo from Steam, verify that the Steam Overlay opens, test one controller with every other input device disconnected, then correct the per-game Steam Input layout and remove software or driver conflicts. SteamDB marks the Windows demo as having Full Controller Support, but that label does not guarantee that every controller, mode switch, emulator, or multi-device setup will work without adjustment.
Does the 4DEAD demo support controllers?
Yes. SteamDB records the 4DEAD Demo (Steam App 5323620) with a Full Controller Support designation. The free Windows demo is published by Kodansha and developed by Kishiro, with English and Japanese interface and subtitle support. SteamDB lists its release date as 16 October 2026.
“Full Controller Support” means Steam has classified the game as supporting controller play; it is not a tested-model list or a promise that every input mode will behave identically. The researched official pages do not publish a 4DEAD-specific button map, a controller-model matrix, or a controller failure-rate statistic. A wrong prompt, a nonresponsive action, or an unexpected keyboard mapping therefore needs to be diagnosed through Steam Input, device isolation, and Windows driver behavior rather than by assuming one universal layout.

You control No. 42, a creature that dies if it does not consume prey within four seconds. That short survival window makes intermittent input feel especially severe: a small delay or a missed button can end a run before you can determine what failed. Kodansha’s official product page calls the controls simple enough to master in four seconds; that is promotional wording, not an independent usability measurement.

Use this fix sequence first
Perform the checks in order. Each step removes a different class of failure, so changing several settings at once can make the cause harder to identify.
- Start the demo from the Steam Library. Do not launch a desktop executable or a shortcut that bypasses Steam. Open Steam, choose Library, select the 4DEAD Demo, and click Play.
- Verify the Steam Overlay. While the demo is running, press the Steam button on the controller or use
Shift+Tabon the keyboard. Valve describes the Overlay as vital to Steam Controller functionality. If it does not appear, open Steam’s settings, enable the in-game overlay, restart the Steam client, and launch the demo again. - Open the game’s controller settings. In Steam, open the demo’s controller configuration and try the official or default layout first. If that does not respond correctly, test a community configuration that matches your controller type.
- Test only one controller. Close the demo. Disconnect other gamepads, wheels, flight sticks, adapters, and unusual USB input devices. For the first clean test, disconnect the keyboard and mouse as well if practical, then reconnect only the suspect controller and relaunch Steam and the demo.
- Reconnect devices individually. If the controller works alone, reconnect the keyboard, mouse, second gamepad, wheel, or other device one at a time. Relaunch or retest after each connection. The device present when the failure returns is the likely conflict.
- Close conflict software temporarily. Exit controller remappers, XInput emulators, overlay tools, capture utilities, and hardware-management programs. Valve specifically lists Razer Synapse, XInput emulators, Fraps, Skype or Skypehost, MSI Afterburner, ASUS AI Suite, and ZoneAlarm as possible conflicts with Steam Controller functionality. Restart Steam after closing them.
- Check the input type. Determine whether the controller is being presented as XInput, DirectInput, a keyboard, or a mouse. If it works only when another device is absent, or appears as the wrong type, update or disable the driver for the device identified during isolation.
- Choose one coherent mapping. For testing, use either native gamepad commands or a keyboard-and-mouse emulation layout. A flexible Directional Pad or Button Pad layout can send keyboard, mouse, or gamepad commands. A gamepad-only joystick style cannot create gamepad support if the game is not receiving a valid gamepad device.
Fix a demo that launches but ignores the controller
Confirm Steam is the launch path
Steam Input depends on Steam being involved in the launch. Start the demo from the Library entry rather than from a file in Windows Explorer. Once the game is open, test the Overlay with Shift+Tab. An absent Overlay is an important diagnostic result: it indicates that Steam’s in-game integration is disabled, blocked, or not attached to the process.
Enable the in-game overlay in Steam’s settings, fully exit and reopen Steam, and start the demo again. Do not judge the controller configuration until the Overlay appears. If the Overlay works but the game still ignores input, continue with the per-game configuration and isolation steps rather than repeatedly reinstalling the demo.

Open and test the per-game Steam Input configuration
Steam can apply a layout that translates physical controls into commands the game understands. Open the 4DEAD Demo’s controller settings from its Steam page and select the official or default configuration. Test movement, menu navigation, and one action before changing individual bindings.
A configuration can fail when it uses an input style the game does not support. Valve’s guidance distinguishes between:
- Gamepad-only joystick styles: these send gamepad signals and require the game to accept gamepad input.
- Directional Pad and Button Pad styles: these can emit keyboard, mouse, or gamepad commands and are useful when a title accepts keyboard events more reliably than native gamepad events.
If menus respond but gameplay does not, inspect the bindings for the movement stick, face buttons, triggers, and the action that starts or confirms a run. If a community layout maps an action to a keyboard key, the game may display keyboard prompts even though the physical control is a gamepad button. That is expected behavior for emulation, not proof that the controller is defective.

Why prompts show a keyboard instead of a controller
Prompt changes usually mean the game is receiving input from two different sources or Steam Input is translating the controller into keyboard events. A keyboard prompt can appear after a single keyboard key is pressed, after a layout uses keyboard emulation, or when the game detects the controller as a DirectInput device instead of the gamepad interface it expects.

If prompts remain on keyboard icons but actions work, switch to a layout that sends the gamepad commands expected by the demo. If the game accepts only keyboard-emulated commands on your setup, use a consistent keyboard layout and avoid pressing the physical keyboard during play; mixed input can make prompts change back and forth.
Do not install multiple remappers while diagnosing this symptom. Each extra translation layer can expose a second virtual controller or alter the device priority that the game receives.
Eliminate multi-device and driver conflicts
Run a one-controller isolation test
Valve recommends removing all devices, adding the Steam Controller or test controller, and then adding other devices individually until functionality breaks. Apply that method to the 4DEAD demo:
- Exit the demo and Steam completely.
- Unplug every additional controller, wheel, fight stick, adapter, and unusual USB input device. Disconnect wireless receivers that belong to devices you are not testing.
- Connect one controller directly to the computer. For the cleanest baseline, use a wired USB connection and avoid a hub.
- Reopen Steam, launch the demo, and test movement, an action button, and menu navigation.
- If it works, reconnect one device at a time and retest. Record the device or software present when the failure returns.
Games can prioritize DirectInput and XInput devices differently. A wheel or second gamepad may claim an input slot or become the preferred device even when the primary controller is connected first. Windows also limits XInput devices to four, so four-device setups can behave differently from a single-controller test.

XInput and DirectInput are different Windows input paths. A controller may offer a mode switch, expose both interfaces, or rely on a driver that creates a virtual device. If the controller works in one mode but not another, keep the working mode for the demo and remove duplicate virtual entries from the test setup.

If the failure appears only after another device is connected, update or disable the driver for that identified device rather than changing every driver at once. Reboot Windows after a driver change, start Steam, and repeat the single-controller test. This preserves a clear cause-and-effect record and makes it easier to undo the change.
Close software that can intercept input
Temporarily exit software that remaps controls, injects overlays, captures the screen, monitors hardware, or emulates XInput. Valve’s conflict list includes Razer Synapse, XInput emulators, Fraps, Skype or Skypehost, MSI Afterburner, ASUS AI Suite, and ZoneAlarm. The purpose of this step is diagnosis, not permanent removal: close one group of likely programs, restart Steam, and retest.
If closing a program restores control, add the demo to that program’s exclusion list if one exists, or leave the program closed while playing. If the problem persists with all listed software closed and one controller connected, the remaining suspects are the Steam configuration, the controller mode, the Windows driver, or a game-specific defect.
Fix buttons that are mapped incorrectly
Start from a known layout
Reset the per-game layout to the official or default configuration before editing individual bindings. Test each control in a predictable order: left stick, right stick, directional buttons, face buttons, bumpers, triggers, menu buttons, and any stick-click actions. Write down which physical control produces which in-game action.
If every button is shifted in the same direction, the controller may be using a different labeling convention or mode. If only one control is wrong, edit that binding instead of replacing the entire layout. Save the layout, return to the game, and test it immediately so you know which change produced the result.
Use keyboard emulation only when necessary
A Button Pad or Directional Pad can map a physical control to a keyboard key when the demo is responding to keyboard input but not native gamepad input. This can restore playability, but it has trade-offs: the game may show keyboard prompts, analog movement may become digital, and simultaneous inputs may behave differently from a native gamepad layout.

Do not combine a keyboard-emulated movement layout with a native gamepad action layout unless you have a specific reason. Mixed layouts can create duplicate commands and make it unclear whether Steam or the game is interpreting a press.

When a wired replacement controller is the sensible test
Replace hardware only after the one-controller test, overlay check, configuration reset, and conflict isolation. A wired USB controller that exposes XInput is a useful diagnostic device because it removes wireless pairing and battery variables while using a common Windows gamepad interface. It is also easier to test alone without installing extra software.

SteamDB’s Full Controller Support tag does not endorse a particular brand or model. Choose by connection reliability, XInput availability, mapping options in Steam Input, and whether the device has a clearly labeled mode switch. Keep the original controller until the replacement has passed the same one-device test.
Check the demo’s PC requirements and scope
The parent Steam listing gives Windows 10, an Intel Core i5 processor, and 2 GB of RAM as minimum requirements. These specifications concern whether the game can run; they do not guarantee controller compatibility. A computer can meet the minimum requirements and still have an input conflict caused by a driver, overlay, or second device.
The demo is single-player and includes adjustable difficulty and custom volume controls according to SteamDB’s listing. Those options do not change the Steam Input troubleshooting process, but they can help distinguish a control failure from a gameplay or audio setting: if the menus respond and volume or difficulty can be changed, Steam is delivering at least some input to the game.
What to include when reporting an unresolved problem
Contact Kishiro through the demo’s Steam community or support channels only after recording a reproducible test. Include:
- Controller manufacturer and model, plus whether the connection is wired, Bluetooth, or through a receiver.
- Windows version and whether the controller is set to XInput, DirectInput, or another mode.
- Steam Input setting and the name of the layout used.
- Whether the Steam Overlay opens with
Shift+Tab. - The exact symptom: no response, wrong buttons, keyboard prompts, intermittent disconnects, or failure only with another device attached.
- The result of the one-controller test and the device or software that caused the failure to return.
- Whether the official/default layout and a keyboard-emulated layout behave differently.
This information is more actionable than saying only that “the controller does not work.” The available official pages do not provide a tested-model matrix or a 4DEAD-specific control map, so report the observed behavior instead of assuming a button assignment that has not been verified.
Bottom line
The 4DEAD Demo is listed with Full Controller Support, but Steam’s label cannot resolve conflicts between layouts, drivers, virtual devices, and multiple controllers. Launch through Steam, restore the Overlay, test one controller alone, select a compatible per-game layout, and add devices and software back one at a time. If a clean single-controller setup still fails, document the exact configuration and report it to the developer; do not infer that every controller model is supported identically from the store label.
