You can make Jev analyze a large repository, but the reliable method is not to paste the repository into state. Build a compact map, screen likely files with focused questions, verify the best candidates against full source, and send only the answer-bearing chunks to the final question. Enable Jev’s experimental 262K mode only when that reduced evidence still cannot fit the default limits.

Know Jev’s two context limits before you send anything

Jev applies two limits to each request. By default, state plus all questions in the request may total 64k tokens, while state plus any single question may total only 32k tokens. The same state is counted in both calculations, so a large repository leaves less room for both your questions and the evidence needed to answer them.

The experimental header TypeSafe-Danger-Zone-Long-Context: true raises both limits to 262k tokens. Long context is disabled by default and, according to the TypeSafe/Jev documentation, works with Jev 1.14 and Jev 1.13. The header changes capacity; it does not make an unfiltered repository a good prompt.

Mode state + all questions state + one question Operational implication
Default 64k tokens 32k tokens Use compact retrieval and short, targeted questions.
Experimental long context 262k tokens 262k tokens Use only after reduction when the remaining evidence is genuinely large.

For example, a 20k-token state leaves at most 12k tokens for one question under the default single-question limit, and at most 44k tokens for all questions combined under the 64k limit. With a 200k-token state in 262K mode, the one-question and all-question budgets are each reduced to 62k. The state is never “free” simply because the limit is larger.

Jev ingests the state once and evaluates every question against it in parallel. That makes a shared, carefully chosen state efficient for related questions, but it also means irrelevant files consume capacity for every question in the request.

Why a whole-repository dump usually performs worse

Concatenating every file creates three problems at once:

  • Capacity: generated output, dependencies, logs and duplicated declarations can consume the budget before the relevant implementation appears.
  • Retrieval: similar symbols and repeated framework boilerplate make it harder to distinguish the code that actually answers the question.
  • Auditability: a broad answer may cite a plausible-looking file while missing the line that proves the behavior.

Repository-level long-context research reports that entire-repository concatenation can exceed context limits and degrade performance. The practical answer is selective context construction: preserve structure first, then increase detail only where evidence justifies it.

The staged workflow that scales

1. Create a repository manifest

Start with a manifest rather than source text. Record each relevant path, language, package or service boundary, exported symbols, routes, schemas and tests. Include ownership or deployment boundaries when they affect the question, such as a worker package versus an HTTP service.

A useful manifest row contains:

  • Path and package boundary.
  • Language and framework.
  • Public functions, classes, handlers or commands.
  • Routes, message topics, database tables or schemas touched.
  • Tests that exercise the behavior.
  • A short purpose statement and dependency hints.

Exclude generated files, vendored dependencies, binaries, minified assets, lockfile noise and large logs unless the question specifically concerns them. Keep a note of excluded directories so you can restore one deliberately when a dependency or generated artifact becomes relevant.

2. Reduce files to structural skeletons

Turn each candidate file into a compact skeleton containing its package, imports, declarations, routes and form fields. Preserve names and relationships, but remove method bodies and repetitive implementation details at this stage. This gives Jev a map of where behavior lives without spending the budget on every line.

The Jev repository’s documented workflow reports reducing a 434 KB source set to 34 KB. That is a workflow example, not a guaranteed ratio: compression depends on language, formatting and how much structure the question needs.

package: payments.api
imports: auth, db, validation
routes: POST /payments, GET /payments/{id}
declarations: createPayment, authorize, loadPayment
schemas: PaymentInput, PaymentRecord
tests: payments_api_test

Keep line numbers or stable symbol identifiers in the skeleton when possible. They make the later verification step faster and provide an audit trail back to the original file.

3. Screen with narrow questions

Use one focused question per file or logical unit. A screening question should test a property, not request a summary. Examples include:

  • “Does this handler verify the caller’s identity before loading the record?”
  • “Does this code build a SQL query by concatenating untrusted input?”
  • “Which function writes the password-reset token, and what expiry does it set?”
  • “Does this route publish an event after the database transaction commits?”

Short questions preserve state budget and make scores comparable. The Jev repository documents find and ask patterns for this kind of screening; use the syntax supported by the Jev version installed in your environment rather than copying options from a different release.

4. Treat scores as triage, not proof

Rank the screening results, then inspect the leading files in full. Jev’s README states: “Scores are calibrated probabilities, not proofs. Open the cited line when it matters.” A high score identifies a promising candidate; it does not establish that the candidate contains the complete control flow, the security check or the failing branch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Re-score or re-ask finalists with a more specific question when two files are close. Include adjacent helpers, middleware and tests if the behavior crosses file boundaries. Record why a file was selected and which line or symbol must be checked.

5. Verify finalists against full contents

Open the complete finalist files, not only the reduced skeleton. Confirm imports, early returns, exception handling, feature flags and callers. Then inspect the cited line and the surrounding control flow. For security, data-loss or migration questions, verify both the positive path and the failure path.

Do not let a screening result stand in for a test. If the answer depends on runtime configuration, read the configuration source and an applicable test or build definition as well.

6. Send only the answer-bearing chunk

After verification, construct the final state from the smallest chunk that contains the necessary evidence: the relevant function, its immediate helpers, the route or caller, and the test or schema that constrains it. State the file path and line range beside each chunk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented Read hook narrows around a requested location for files up to about 80 KB. Files above that size should be split deliberately. The benchmark reports lower recall when sections are not comparable, so split at meaningful boundaries such as classes, functions or modules rather than arbitrary byte counts.

What belongs in state

State should provide context that remains useful across every question in the request. A compact state commonly contains:

  • A repository tree limited to relevant packages.
  • The manifest and skeletons for candidate files.
  • Definitions of domain terms, route names and schema fields.
  • Short excerpts of shared configuration or middleware.
  • Test names and expected behavior that constrain the answer.
  • Stable file paths, symbols and line references.

Do not put every README, lockfile or generated client into state merely because it exists. Add an excluded artifact only when a screening result or dependency lookup shows that it can change the answer. Keep separate states for unrelated investigations; combining an authentication audit with an unrelated build-system question wastes the same budget twice.

Use deterministic tools alongside Jev

Jev is most useful when the name is unknown or the question is semantic across many files. Use deterministic tools for exact lookups:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • grep or ripgrep: locate an exact symbol, route, environment variable or SQL fragment.
  • Language indexes: find definitions, references and call hierarchies.
  • Build metadata: identify package boundaries, generated sources and actual dependency edges.
  • Test runners: confirm whether the path is exercised and whether the observed behavior is reproducible.

Feed the resulting paths and line ranges into the screening and verification stages. Conversely, use Jev to answer questions such as whether several differently named handlers enforce the same authorization rule. Always open the file and line behind an important Jev result before changing code or writing a security finding.

When to enable the 262K header

Enable long context only after reduction, screening and verification still leave a genuinely large evidence set. Appropriate cases include a cross-service data-flow question where the relevant implementations, schemas and tests together exceed the default limits, or a migration review that must compare many tightly related modules.

Add TypeSafe-Danger-Zone-Long-Context: true to the Jev request using the HTTP client or SDK mechanism supported by your deployment. Confirm the active Jev version, model identifier and header behavior in the official documentation before changing production code; those details are volatile.

TypeSafe explicitly warns that long context is “slower and less accurate than staying within the default limits.” Treat that warning as a design constraint:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Reduce the repository to a manifest and skeletons.
  2. Screen and verify candidates.
  3. Measure the remaining state and question tokens.
  4. Use the default mode if the evidence fits.
  5. Enable the header only when the reduced evidence still exceeds a default limit.
  6. After the answer, inspect cited lines and run deterministic checks.

Do not turn on long context merely because the repository is large on disk. A 500 MB repository may yield a small, relevant state after generated files and dependencies are removed; a much smaller monorepo can still require long context if the question spans many services.

Choosing an approach

Approach Context fit Recall and accuracy risk Latency and token cost Auditability Implementation effort
Whole-repository injection Often exceeds default limits Noise and missed evidence increase as the repository grows Highest input cost; may fail before answering Weak unless every claim is traced manually Lowest initially
Staged retrieval Designed to fit default limits Strong when finalists are verified; screening scores are not proof Lower input volume and better headroom Strong file and line trail Moderate
262K mode after reduction Fits a much larger evidence set Better capacity, but the vendor warns of lower accuracy than default mode Higher latency and potentially higher billed input Good if chunks and citations remain explicit Low after retrieval pipeline exists

For most repositories, staged retrieval is the default choice. Whole-repository injection is appropriate only for a small, already curated codebase. Long context is a fallback for a reduced set that is still too large.

Budget tokens deliberately

Make the token arithmetic explicit before each request. Reserve space for the question and for evidence that may be added after a first answer.

  • Default single-question request: if state is 24k tokens, no more than 8k tokens remain for that question.
  • Default multi-question request: the same 24k state leaves 40k tokens for all questions together, but each individual question still shares the 32k single-question ceiling.
  • 262K request: a 150k state leaves 112k tokens for all questions and for any one question, subject to the same combined total.

These are ceilings, not targets. Leave practical headroom for serialization, system instructions and a useful answer. If a final question needs a large explanation, shrink state first instead of filling the entire allowance with unrelated code.

Common failure modes and fixes

The state contains generated or vendored code

Symptom: the answer discusses framework internals or generated clients instead of your implementation. Fix: remove those directories from the initial manifest, then add only the generated definition that constrains the behavior under review.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

The question is broad and the score is indecisive

Symptom: many files receive similar relevance scores. Fix: split the question into a property and a location, such as identity verification, query construction or transaction ordering, and screen one logical unit at a time.

A cited line looks correct but the behavior is wrong

Symptom: a finding ignores an early return, middleware rule or feature flag. Fix: read the full finalist file, its caller and its test; then re-run the question with those adjacent chunks included.

A large file produces weak retrieval

Symptom: the relevant section is missed in a file above roughly 80 KB. Fix: split it at semantic boundaries and compare like-sized sections. Do not rely on a single arbitrary slice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long context makes responses slower

Symptom: latency rises without a corresponding accuracy gain. Fix: return to the default limits, reduce state, and ask fewer, narrower questions. The long-context warning is a reason to simplify, not a reason to add more files.

What the published benchmarks do—and do not—prove

The Jev repository’s paired find benchmark reports 30% lower mean billed input tokens with equal 7/7 correct answers in the compared agent runs. Its documented narrowing hook reports 41% lower billed input tokens in paired runs. These measurements come from small repository sets and should not be generalized to every language, architecture or workload. They support the value of narrowing, not a guaranteed saving for your project.

The broader long-context literature also reports that concatenating entire repositories can exceed limits and degrade performance. Taken together, the evidence favors a retrieval pipeline with explicit verification over indiscriminate context expansion.

Production checklist

  • Confirm the Jev version, model ID and current context behavior.
  • Generate a manifest with paths, packages, symbols, routes, schemas and tests.
  • Exclude generated, vendored, binary, minified, lockfile and log content unless required.
  • Build structural skeletons and preserve stable paths or line references.
  • Ask short screening questions for each file or logical unit.
  • Inspect and verify finalists against full contents and adjacent callers.
  • Split files larger than about 80 KB at semantic boundaries.
  • Construct the final state from only answer-bearing chunks.
  • Calculate state-plus-question tokens before sending.
  • Use deterministic search and tests to validate every important result.
  • Enable TypeSafe-Danger-Zone-Long-Context: true only when reduced evidence still exceeds default limits.
  • Record the cited files, lines and assumptions so another engineer can reproduce the finding.

The dependable way to fit a large codebase into Jev is therefore selective construction, not maximal injection: map the repository, narrow the search, verify the evidence, and reserve 262K mode for the cases that remain large after that work.
