To fit a resume on one page in Google Docs, switch the document to Pages layout, trim lower-priority content, then adjust paragraph spacing and page settings in small steps. If a template still spills onto a second page, check for hidden tables and row-height constraints. Finally, verify the result in a page-based view rather than relying on Pageless scrolling.
Set the document to Pages layout
A one-page resume is a page-layout goal, so use Google Docs’ Pages format rather than Pageless. In Pages, page breaks and settings such as paper size, orientation, and margins define the document’s pagination. Pageless is designed for continuous scrolling and does not provide some page-specific features.
- Open File > Page setup.
- Select Pages if the document is currently Pageless, then confirm the change.
Google’s instructions describe Pages as the format for setting up a document with pages and page breaks: Change a document’s page setup: pages or pageless. For the controls available in Page setup, see Change page settings on Google Docs.
Reduce content before making it smaller
Review the resume and remove repetition or lower-priority detail before compressing the layout. Preserve the accomplishments and qualifications most relevant to the role; cutting useful evidence just to meet a page count can make the resume less effective. There is no universal one-page requirement established by the product guidance cited here, so treat one page as your chosen format rather than a rule for every applicant.

Adjust line and paragraph spacing
Extra space around paragraphs can push a few lines onto a second page. Select the affected text and open Format > Line & paragraph spacing. Choose a supported preset or custom spacing, and remove excess space before or after paragraphs where appropriate. Google’s formatting guide also describes controls such as Keep with next and Keep lines together, which can affect pagination: Change how paragraphs & fonts look.
Change one setting at a time and check the page. Tightening everything at once can make the document harder to scan without revealing which change solved the overflow.

Make careful page-setting changes
Use File > Page setup to review margins, paper size, and orientation. Adjust margins only as much as needed, checking the full page after each change. The available product guidance does not establish a universally correct resume font size or margin, so avoid shrinking text until it becomes difficult to read simply to force a one-page result.

Fix a template that still creates a second page
Some resume templates may use tables whose structure is not immediately obvious. In a Google Docs community answer dated February 21, 2025, Product Expert Jo S. Diamond identifies excessive text, line spacing, minimum row height, and large page margins as possible causes of template overflow. This is community troubleshooting advice, not an official statement that every template uses tables.

- Check whether the content itself is too long for the available page area.
- Review line and paragraph spacing.
- Reveal table borders, if applicable, and inspect row heights for unnecessary minimum height.
- Review page margins in Page setup.

Check the complete document in Pages or print layout after the edits. Pageless uses continuous scrolling, so it is not a dependable view for judging how many printed pages the resume will occupy. If you use page numbers or other page-specific elements, Google documents them under headers, footers, page numbers and footnotes.
