To finish How to Fish, follow the five-island story route—Lighthouse, Forest, Desert, Rocks, then Volcano—and return each boss trophy to the quest giver. Defeating a boss alone does not open the next route. Keep key items and boss bodies until you have used them; selling or losing one can interrupt progression.
How island progression works
This route is based on community walkthroughs, not an official developer guide. The five island names and sequence are community-reported. The game launched on Steam on August 20, 2026; Steam describes it as a physics-based fishing simulator in which players work their way home after crashing onto an island. Steam’s listing is the official source for the game’s premise and platform details.
At each main story gate, complete the island’s quest, trigger and defeat its boss, then bring the requested trophy to the named NPC. The walkthrough below follows the community-reported sequence; prices and some map or encounter details may vary or be uncertain, so check the current game rather than relying on an unverified price.

1. Lighthouse: get the first boat keys
- Complete the Lighthouse Keeper’s crab-fishing request using the crab-fishing rod.
- Give the keeper a beer. Keep the empty beer can he returns; use it to trigger the Spider Crab encounter.
- Defeat the Spider Crab and retain its shell or trophy. Return it to the keeper to receive the boat keys.
- Before leaving, acquire the radar and a working engine. Community guides warn that the radar can be easy to miss.
The Empty Beer Can is a boss trigger, not disposable quest clutter. Do not sell or discard it before using it.

2. Forest: summon the Giant Piranha
- Find the woman by the lake and accept her request for three ground leeches.
- Collect three leeches and trade them to her for Modified Leech bait.
- Use the Modified Leech to summon and defeat the Giant Piranha.
- Return the Giant Piranha’s skeleton or trophy to the quest giver to unlock the next marker.
3. Desert: earn the Rocks coordinates
- Find the tourist on the beach and trade one eligible endangered fish for carrot bait. The community route lists Needlefish, Bowlfish, or Seahorse as eligible catches.
- Use the carrot bait to trigger and defeat Pufferfish.
- Return the Pufferfish fin to the quest giver for the Rocks coordinates.
Optional: Blue Shark
The Blue Shark and grill-lighting sequence is described by the community guide as an optional mini-boss and cooking-related side route. It is not required for the main island progression gate.
4. Rocks: use Tuna to trigger Albatross
- Buy a Professional Boss Lure, then use it to catch Tuna.
- Defeat Tuna and keep its body. The community route says to place it on a grassy patch to trigger Albatross.
- Defeat Albatross and take its head to the man hiding in the shop. Returning the head unlocks the Volcano coordinates.
The Tuna body is needed to trigger the encounter. Do not sell it before placing it at the trigger location.

5. Volcano: reach the final boss
- Feed five fish to the scientist to receive the Fish Bucket.
- Use the Fish Bucket to catch Bowhead Whale.
- Keep the Bowhead Whale’s body intact and carry it up the wooden plank path to the volcano to trigger the final boss.
- Defeat the boss and return its fin to the scientist to receive the black boat keys and reach the ending.
Can you skip islands?
Follow the story gates in order. A community guide reports that Patch 1.0.5 fixed travel to locked islands, making older island-skip instructions outdated. The route’s required trophies—not simply boss kills—are what unlock the next stage.

- Empty Beer Can: use it to trigger Spider Crab.
- Modified Leech bait: use it for Giant Piranha.
- Tuna body: place it to trigger Albatross before selling it.
- Intact Bowhead Whale body: carry it to the volcano for the final encounter.
- Boss trophies: return each to the relevant NPC to open the next route.
The independent How to Fish Wiki reports five route stages, 54 extracted creatures, 11 boss guides, and 28 achievements; those are fan-wiki counts, not developer-published totals.
