To get the RHIB keys in How to Fish, complete the Volcano Island endgame chain: fulfill the scientist’s bait request, defeat the Bowhead Whale, throw its body into the volcano, defeat the Mutated Bowhead Whale, and give its Whale Fin to the scientist. Then take the keys to the RHIB and use its start interaction—the boat, not the boss fight or key hand-in, triggers the ending.
What you need to do
- Reach Volcano Island, also called Island 5.
- Complete the scientist’s bait request. Guides describe a requirement of five fish or catches, but differ on whether any fish count or whether they must be caught locally. Follow the request shown in your game and check that its counter advances.
- Prepare for two linked whale fights before using the bait.
- Catch and defeat the regular Bowhead Whale. Keep its body.
- Carry the body to the volcano and throw it in to trigger the Mutated Bowhead Whale encounter.
- Defeat the mutated whale and collect its Whale Fin.
- Give the Whale Fin to the scientist and collect the RHIB keys.
- Go to the RHIB on Volcano Island and interact with its start control to trigger the ending.
The route to Volcano Island is described as Lighthouse → Forest → Desert → Rocks → Volcano, with quest completions unlocking later destinations. See the endgame walkthrough for that route.
Complete the scientist’s bait request
The bait stage is described inconsistently in available guides: one says any five fish, while others specify five catches from Volcano using the Scientific Lure route. Rather than assume that every catch counts in every version or quest state, use the scientist’s current request and verify that each catch registers before moving on. The RHIB guide, walkthrough, and versioned endgame guide all describe the five-catch step, but not identically.

Prepare for both whale fights before starting
The first whale’s body is the trigger for the second encounter. Once you throw it into the volcano, the harder Mutated Bowhead Whale fight begins, so prepare before taking that step. Guides recommend an upgraded assault rifle and a supply of cooked fish for healing; these are recommendations, not independently tested weapon or healing comparisons. The endgame guide was checked against version 1.0.5 on August 23, 2026, but that dated version reference does not establish that every mechanic remained unchanged afterward.

- Do not sell, cook, or otherwise lose the regular whale’s body before carrying it to the volcano.
- Have your weapon and healing food ready before throwing the body in.
Guides mention charges, stomps, and lava attacks, but do not establish reliable boss health, damage, or attack timing figures. Avoid relying on precise stats or dodge windows as if they were confirmed.
Know which whale drops the key item
The regular Bowhead Whale is the first fight, not the final boss. Its body is needed to start the mutated encounter. The Mutated Bowhead Whale—also called the mutated or lava whale in some guides—drops the Whale Fin that the scientist accepts for the RHIB keys. The shared sequence is described in the RHIB guide and walkthrough.

Why the scientist may not give you the keys
- You have the wrong item: the requested trophy is the final boss’s Whale Fin, not ordinary meat or another creature’s trophy. See the item and quest guide.
- You defeated only the regular whale: take that whale’s body to the volcano and throw it in to spawn the mutated boss.
- The bait counter has not advanced: check the scientist’s displayed request and confirm that the catches you make register. Guide accounts differ on which catches qualify.
- You have the keys but no ending: collect the keys, go to the RHIB, and use its start interaction. The key hand-in alone does not roll credits.
What happens after the RHIB ride
