The Pufferfish is the third story boss in How to Fish, found on Desert Island, often called Island 3. To summon it, trade the Tourist a fish marked endangered to get the Carrot, then use the Carrot as bait. During the fight, keep moving and shooting from range, route around the later poison hazard, and save the Pufferfish Fin for island progression.
Where to find the Pufferfish boss
Travel to Desert Island. Several guides also call it Island 3; island numbering can vary between guides, so rely on the destination name shown in your game where available. Look for the Tourist beneath or beside a tree. The Tourist’s trade is the step that unlocks the bait needed to start the encounter.
What you need to summon it
- Use the Standard Lure to catch a fish with the endangered status marker. Needlefish and Seahorse are named examples; Bowlfish is another reported option. These are examples, not a complete list.
- Give the qualifying catch to the Tourist. An ordinary fish without the endangered marker may not satisfy the trade.
- Take the Carrot reward, called the Carrot Lure in some guides, equip or use it as bait, and fish to trigger the Pufferfish encounter.
Complete the Tourist trade before trying to summon the boss. The endangered marker, rather than simply catching a fish, is the important requirement.
How to beat the Pufferfish boss
The Pufferfish makes committed rolling charges and grows as the encounter continues. A purple poison cloud or trail appears in a later phase. The exact phase timing and damage values are not established, so focus on watching its movements and keeping an escape route open.

Keep moving while you attack
Do not plant yourself to shoot. Run laterally or circle the arena while firing from range so the boss’s charge is less likely to hit you directly. Guides recommend ranged weapons, including SMGs and Uzi-type weapons. One PC Gamer guide author reports succeeding with an upgraded SMG, but that is an example setup, not a required weapon.
Use terrain without cornering yourself
Trees and other terrain can help influence the Pufferfish’s approach and preserve distance. Circle around obstacles rather than letting them block your escape; getting trapped against terrain leaves little room to dodge the next charge.

Route around the poison
When the purple hazard appears, avoid crossing it. Move around its edge while keeping a clear route for the boss’s next charge. Choose a path that avoids both the hazard and a dead end against terrain.

Heal when you need to
Cooked fish is recommended by one guide as a healing option. Bring some if available, but the amount needed depends on how much damage you take; no fixed minimum is established.

What to bring and check before the encounter
- The Carrot from the Tourist trade, ready to use as bait.
- A ranged weapon you can fire while repositioning. Weapon choice is flexible; no particular model or upgrade is established as mandatory.
- Cooked fish for healing, if you have it.
- An open route around the arena so you can move around charges, obstacles, and the later poison hazard.
What to do after defeating it
Secure the Pufferfish Fin and return it to the Tourist or follow the progression prompt shown in the game. Guides connect the fin with coordinates or an unlock for the next island, but differ in the destination’s naming. Use the game’s displayed destination rather than relying on a particular island number.
