In How to Fish, the reported long-throw setup is to equip dynamite, hold Q to charge the throw, then release. A jump near release is a guide-recommended way to try to place the stick beyond the shoreline, but it is not established that jumping independently adds range. After the stick lands, shoot the dynamite itself to detonate it.
How to set up and throw dynamite
- Equip dynamite. Select it as your active item before aiming toward the water.
- Hold Q to charge. The guides describe holding, rather than tapping, Q as the way to build a longer throw. They say distance increases with charge up to a maximum charge.
- Release toward your target. For a basic charged throw, aim for the area where you want the dynamite to land and release Q after charging.
- Switch to a firearm and shoot the stick. The guides say shooting the landed dynamite triggers the explosion; throwing it alone does not complete the detonation step.
These are secondary-guide instructions, not developer-confirmed mechanics or independently tested findings. If Q has been rebound in your controls, the guides do not establish what key replaces it. They also do not confirm that the same input works on every platform.
How to try the charged jump throw
AllThingsHow describes a full charge followed by a jump and release as a way to send dynamite past the surf into deeper water. NerdsChalk also discusses the technique but says it is unclear whether jumping itself increases distance or simply changes the release position. Treat it as a placement technique to try, not a guaranteed range boost.

- Jump near the end of the charge.
- Release Q during the jump, aiming beyond the shoreline.
- Watch where the stick lands. If it is near the target, create distance from the blast, then shoot the stick.
Use a charged ground throw when the target is within ordinary throwing reach; try the jump throw when you want to attempt a landing farther out. The guides provide no measured comparison of their landing distances, so adjust based on where the stick actually lands in your game.

What is the maximum dynamite range?
No numeric maximum range in meters or game units is published by the reviewed guides. They describe a longer hold as producing a longer throw, up to a maximum charge, but do not give a verified distance for that maximum. A precise range would therefore be a guess.
The jump method is likewise not a confirmed way to increase maximum range. One guide recommends it for reaching deeper water; another leaves open whether the jump changes distance or only release position. Current key binding, throw physics, and patch-specific behavior are not confirmed by official developer documentation in the available sources.

When dynamite is useful—and the tradeoffs
- Clearing fish schools: The guides describe dynamite as a quick way to collect multiple fish when it lands among a group and is detonated.
- Achievement tasks: NerdsChalk describes dynamite-related uses that include killing a seagull with dynamite and launching a boat into the air.
- Speed versus longer-term earnings: One guide characterizes dynamite as a speed-and-volume option and advises that rod fishing may be stronger for longer-term earnings. That is guide advice, not a verified rule for every player or game state.
AllThingsHow Staff reported a shop cost of $25 in game currency in 2026. That is a virtual-item price, not a real-world cost; the available information does not establish whether the price changes by version or game state.

Avoid catching yourself in the blast
A short or undercharged throw can land close to you, and the guides warn that close-range explosions can catch the player in the blast. Move away from the landed stick before shooting it. No specific safe distance is established, so do not rely on a fixed number of steps or units.
