The Volcano Island finale in How to Fish is a two-boss sequence: defeat the regular Bowhead Whale, then throw its body into the volcano to trigger the Mutated Bowhead Whale. Prepare before that second fight begins. Afterward, return the Whale Fin to the scientist and start the RHIB to complete the ending sequence.

Carry the whale’s body to the volcano and throw it in. This triggers the Mutated Bowhead Whale, so treat it as the start of the next fight—not a break to restock.

What to prepare before throwing the whale into the volcano
Independent guides recommend bringing an upgraded assault rifle for ranged damage and a large supply of cooked fish for healing. These are tactical recommendations, not confirmed quest requirements; the available guides do not identify a mandatory weapon or loadout.

- Cooked fish: Prepare enough healing items for the consecutive encounters. The walkthrough suggests cooking fish in volcano lava and leaving extra cooked fish near the military camp so they are accessible across the sequence.
- Ranged weapon: An upgraded assault rifle is the recommended primary weapon, but the guides do not provide enough comparable weapon data to rank alternatives.
- Room to move: Keep an escape route clear, especially during the mutated fight. Staying mobile is more useful than remaining under the boss to deal damage.

How to survive both whale fights
Regular Bowhead Whale
Watch for the whale’s charge and its upward launch before a landing attack. Move when it rises rather than waiting beneath it, then use a safer opening to attack. The guides do not provide exact damage values or a guaranteed attack schedule.

Mutated Bowhead Whale
The mutated boss adds rolls, stomps, lava pools, and meteor-like attacks. Keep moving around it, avoid standing beneath it or on hazardous ground, and attack during safer movement windows. Heal with cooked fish after taking damage instead of waiting until your health is critical.
NerdsChalk and How2Fish Game Guide Hub describe these hazards and recommend evasion. The available sources do not establish boss health, precise weapon damage, or drop probabilities.

Explosives and patch information
A fan guide updated September 6, 2026 reports that patch 1.0.12 fixed explosive damage when an explosive lands on the final boss’s tail. The report does not state the damage or blast radius, and it is secondary reporting rather than a directly verified official patch note. If you plan to use explosives, check current official notes; the cited guide does not establish a reliable explosive strategy.
How2Fish Game Guide Hub’s patch report is the source for that change. Steam describes How to Fish as a 1–4 player, physics-based fishing simulator with quests and boss fights. Steam’s game listing gives the release date as August 20, 2026.
