Semrush can help you find and assess YouTube keyword ideas, but no keyword guarantees a viral video or a lasting rank. Use YouTube-specific demand and competition signals to shortlist topics, then check Google video results separately, study the videos viewers already see, and choose a subject your channel can answer well. YouTube says search considers relevance, engagement, and quality; audience response and the usefulness of the video matter beyond its keywords.

What YouTube keywords can—and cannot—do

Keywords help YouTube understand what a video covers and how it relates to a viewer’s query. They are one part of discovery, not a shortcut around a clear answer, strong viewer response, or a topic people want to watch.

YouTube says Search prioritizes “relevance, engagement, and quality.” Relevance can include how the title, tags, description, and video content match a query. Engagement can include watch time for that query, while quality signals can reflect expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness on the topic. YouTube also says it does not accept payment for better placement in organic search results.

Recommendations use signals that vary by surface and format, including whether viewers choose to watch or ignore a recommendation, viewing duration, percentage viewed, likes, and post-watch survey results. Topic interest, competition, and seasonality also affect impressions. A high-volume phrase therefore cannot promise virality or a fixed period of visibility.

Start with a topic your channel can credibly cover

Begin with real audience problems rather than a tool’s biggest number. Collect recurring questions from comments, support requests, community posts, and your own work. Keep ideas that fit your channel’s knowledge and that you can answer accurately.

  • Write down the problem the viewer is trying to solve, not just a broad subject.
  • Note what your channel can explain, demonstrate, or show better than a generic answer.
  • Keep topics that remain useful or recur, while noting any seasonal or time-sensitive angle.
  • Set aside high-volume ideas that would force your channel into a format or subject it cannot deliver well.

Find the phrases viewers actually use

Use YouTube Analytics’ Research features as a platform-native starting point for audience language and query ideas. Then use YouTube-facing keyword research to expand that list. Semrush describes its Keyword Analytics for YouTube app as offering keyword ideas, rising searches, search volume, competition context, leading videos, common phrasing, and country and time filters. The exact interface, access level, and available filters can change, so check what your account currently exposes before following a click-by-click workflow.

Build a shortlist of natural query variants around each problem. For example, “how to do YouTube keyword research” is a phrase used in Semrush’s guide; do not assume it has a particular search volume without checking live data for the relevant country and period.

Keep YouTube demand and Google demand separate

Use YouTube-specific data to assess YouTube queries. In Keyword Analytics for YouTube, compare the available search-volume and competitive-rate signals for the country and time window you care about. Treat these as tool indicators, not guarantees of audience size or ranking.

Semrush’s Keyword Magic Tool can broaden the phrase list with related queries and questions, and help check whether Google shows video results for a query. Its documented monthly volume is average monthly Google queries in the selected national database—not YouTube search volume. Semrush says this Google database data is updated monthly.

A Google video carousel, featured video, or other video result is a separate opportunity signal. It indicates that Google may show video for that query; it does not establish YouTube search volume or guarantee placement.

Inspect the results before choosing a keyword

Search the candidate phrase on YouTube and examine the results currently shown. Search results can vary by viewer and change over time, so one manual search is a useful snapshot rather than a universal ranking report.

  • Intent: What problem are the leading videos actually answering?
  • Format and depth: Are viewers being served a quick demonstration, a walkthrough, an explainer, or a longer comparison?
  • Freshness: Does the topic depend on current software, rules, or events, or is a durable explanation still useful?
  • Content gap: Is there a genuine missing step, clearer explanation, better example, or more accurate answer your channel can provide?
  • Competition: Are established videos and channels already satisfying the query? A strong video can still receive limited impressions when competition is high.

Do not target a phrase merely because its wording looks attainable. The intended viewer, the videos competing for that viewer, and your ability to satisfy the query should all fit.

Prioritize for channel fit and durability

Semrush’s May 15, 2026 guide describes a scoring worksheet that assigns demand 25%, competition 20%, channel fit 10%, and format fit 10%. These are weights in Semrush’s editorial prioritization method, not YouTube ranking factors or measured causal weights. Use a framework like it to make topic choices consistent, not to predict a rank.

For your own shortlist, weigh the signals that matter to the channel and its audience:

  • Demand: Is there evidence that people search for the problem on YouTube, in the relevant geography and period?
  • Competition: Can a channel of your size and authority plausibly offer a better answer?
  • Channel and format fit: Can you deliver the expected format with your expertise and resources?
  • Durability: Is the audience problem likely to persist, or will the answer date quickly?
  • Distinctiveness and value: Can the video add a useful example, clearer explanation, or accurate detail? For business channels, does the topic also serve a relevant audience or business goal?

Use accurate metadata and deliver on the promise

YouTube recommends identifying one or two main descriptive words and featuring them prominently in the title and description. Make the title specific and accurate, and use the central topic naturally near the start of the description. YouTube says the opening lines are visible before a viewer expands the description; write unique text that explains the video and its related terms without stuffing in variants. Its documentation sets a 5,000-character maximum, not a required minimum length.

Make the thumbnail and title match what the video actually delivers, then address the promised question promptly. If viewers click expecting one answer and receive another, keyword alignment will not fix the mismatch.

Give tags low priority. YouTube says tags “can be helpful but are not essential for discovery” and are primarily used to correct common spelling variants. Use them for a relevant misspelling when needed; do not stuff tags with unrelated trends.

Review performance and refresh with a reason

After publishing, use YouTube Analytics’ “How viewers find your” report to see which search queries bring viewers to the channel and pair that information with the platform’s Research features. Review whether the video is reaching the intended audience and whether its response suggests the answer is working. Use what you learn to improve future topic selection.

Revisit a video when the answer, audience need, or competitive landscape changes. A title or thumbnail edit can affect performance by changing viewer behavior, but YouTube says the edit itself does not automatically boost ranking. Change packaging only when it can be made more accurate or useful, and avoid disturbing a version that is already working without a clear reason.
