Open the game’s map, place a pin or beacon on the destination, and follow it with the compass or minimap. If you no longer remember the destination, use a route-history feature such as a traveled-path overlay. When an unlocked fast-travel point is nearby, travel there first and walk the remaining distance. The exact controls and marker behavior differ by game, so confirm the map legend and interface instructions before setting out.
What each navigation tool actually does
Open-world games use several different systems to solve the same problem: preserving a destination in a world that is too large to memorize. They are not interchangeable. A map pin records a point you choose; a discovered-location icon records a place the game already knows; a compass or minimap turns that point into a direction; route history shows where you have been; and fast travel moves you to an unlocked hub rather than necessarily to the exact spot you want.
| Tool | What it preserves or shows | Typical limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Custom pin or beacon | A destination selected by the player | Some games show it only on the map; others also show it on the compass or in the world |
| Discovered-location icon | A landmark, settlement, dungeon, shrine, or other point the game has registered | It may represent only places already discovered, not an arbitrary patch of terrain |
| Compass or minimap | The direction and approximate distance to a marker while you move | A rotating map can make east and west feel inconsistent unless you use a fixed orientation |
| Route history | The ground you have already covered during a defined period of play | The feature may be optional, progression-gated, limited by time, or supplied as downloadable content |
| Fast travel | A rapid trip to an unlocked point, hub, or waystation | It can cost in-game currency and often cannot place you directly at an unregistered destination |
A reliable method for returning to any remembered location
- Open the map and identify the destination. Look for the discovered icon, a named landmark, a nearby settlement, or a distinctive geographic feature. Zoom out far enough to recognize the surrounding region, then zoom in to select the actual target.
- Place a marker you will recognize later. Choose a custom pin, beacon, or map marker. If the game offers categories, use a consistent convention—for example, one color for unfinished objectives and another for resources. If notes are supported, write a short reason such as “cave entrance behind waterfall.”
- Check what the marker means in play. Some interfaces show a marker on the map only. Others project it onto the compass, minimap, or physical world. Read the legend and move a short distance to confirm that the marker responds as expected before committing to a long journey.
- Orient yourself before walking. If the minimap rotates, turn until the heading matches a recognizable landmark, or switch to a north-fixed option when the game provides one. Compare the marker’s direction with terrain such as a river, ridge, road, or coastline.
- Follow the marker in stages. Use the map for broad routing and the compass or minimap for the next few hundred meters. Reopen the map at major intersections, after entering a cave, or whenever the marker disappears behind an obstacle.
- Use route history if the destination is vague. A traveled-path overlay can reveal the road, trail, or shoreline you used previously. Follow the old path until a landmark makes the destination recognizable again.
- Shorten the trip with fast travel when appropriate. Select an unlocked point close to the marker, account for any fee, and walk the final segment. Fast travel usually moves you to a hub, not to an arbitrary coordinate.
How pins and beacons work in major examples
Elden Ring: a beacon gives you a visible target
In Elden Ring, discovered map markers add icons to the map, while a beacon placed on a marker can guide you during play. Bandai Namco’s official ELDEN RING Introduction Part 3 – Gameplay Overview, published July 19, 2023, explains that a beacon creates an icon on the compass and a blue light visible in the world. The guide states: “In the example below I’ve added a beacon to the map marker’s location, which will create an icon on my compass, as well as a blue light visually showing the location of the beacon in the game.”

The golden guidance points in a broad direction associated with important content. A custom beacon is the better choice for an arbitrary remembered location such as a merchant, crafting material, optional cave, or the entrance to a previously noticed ruin. Place the beacon after selecting the target on the map, then use the compass and blue world beacon to keep the destination in sight. If the route appears blocked, remove the beacon, select a safer approach on the map, and place it again.

Breath of the Wild: map pins plus a stable minimap heading
Nintendo’s official guidance for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild describes placing map pins to preserve a location. The game also offers a north-fixed minimap option. A fixed north orientation is useful when you are returning to a distant landmark because the top of the minimap remains a stable reference instead of rotating with Link’s facing direction. You can then translate a remembered instruction such as “the canyon is east of the tower” into a repeatable heading.
Use the telescope when you are standing on a high point and can see the target or a landmark near it. Mark the sighted position, then select the marker on the map before leaving the overlook. A pin is an aid to navigation, not proof that the route is walkable: cliffs, water, guardians, and locked areas can force a detour.
Tears of the Kingdom: telescope pins, warp markers, and footprints
Nintendo’s official The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom guide recommends using the telescope to spot a location and place a pin. The Purah Pad also supports a warp marker, and Nintendo documents Footprint Mode as a way to display the route you have traveled on the map. These tools solve different problems. The pin preserves a destination you can see; the warp marker supports a return point when that feature has been added through the game’s progression; Footprint Mode helps when you remember traveling somewhere but cannot remember which valley, road, or island route you used.
When returning to an elevated island or deep area, first select the correct vertical layer on the map. A marker can be horizontally accurate while still leaving you above, below, or on the wrong layer. Use the footprint trail to identify the approach you previously used, then place a fresh pin at the final entrance or landing point once you recognize it.

Using the compass and minimap without losing your bearings
Choose a consistent orientation
A rotating minimap is useful for immediate turns but poor for comparing today’s route with a memory from an earlier session. If the game offers north-fixed mode, enable it while retracing a long journey. If it does not, pause at intersections and read the world map, where north is usually fixed, before continuing.
Use landmarks to verify the heading
Do not follow an arrow blindly through a complex landscape. Confirm the direction against a feature that cannot move: a mountain notch, bridge, shoreline bend, tower, large tree, or road junction. If the marker says you are traveling correctly but the landscape does not match the remembered approach, you may be on the opposite side of a ravine or building. Reopen the map and choose a route that reaches the same landmark from the correct side.
Understand marker distance and occlusion
Some games place a marker at the edge of the compass when the destination is far away; others show only a symbol without a reliable distance. In-world markers can be hidden by hills, buildings, weather, or underground geometry. Treat the marker as a bearing, then use the map to identify roads, bridges, elevators, and entrances that connect the bearing to the target.

Use route history first
A route-history feature is the best solution when the problem is not “which direction?” but “which part of the world did I visit?” In Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo’s Footprint Mode displays the route traveled on the map. In Breath of the Wild, the optional Hero’s Path feature records up to 200 hours of gameplay, according to Nintendo’s 2017 announcement for The Master Trials DLC.

Scan the recorded line for unusual behavior: a long detour around a mountain, a straight glide across a gap, a spiral around a tower, or a short branch that ends at a cave. Those patterns are often more recognizable than the destination itself. Once you identify the correct branch, place a new pin at the location you want to revisit so you will not need the history overlay next time.
Reconstruct the route from landmarks
If route history is unavailable, list three things you remember in order: a starting hub, a major landmark, and the final approach. Search the map for that sequence rather than trying to identify the exact destination immediately. For example, “village, then river crossing, then broken bridge” narrows the search far more effectively than “somewhere north.”
Inspect map icons and the legend
Map symbols can represent discovered points, shops, objectives, collectibles, custom notes, or temporary markers. Open the legend before interpreting an unfamiliar icon. A symbol that looks like a remembered location may instead be a quest objective that moved, a fast-travel point you have not unlocked, or a marker placed during an earlier session.

Fast travel: when it helps and when it does not
Fast travel is most useful after you have identified a nearby hub. It reduces the uninteresting portion of the journey while preserving the final navigation challenge. Check three conditions before selecting it:

- The destination point is already unlocked and available on the map.
- The game permits fast travel in your current state; combat, indoor areas, quests, or special modes can disable it.
- You can pay any required in-game cost and still have enough resources for the activity you are returning to perform.
The Elder Scrolls Online provides a clear example. ZeniMax Online Studios’ official new-player guide says that previously visited Wayshrines can be selected from anywhere on the map for a small gold fee. This is an ESO-specific rule, not a universal open-world convention. In other games, travel may be free, may require a consumable, or may work only between selected towers, shrines, camps, or settlements.
After arriving, place or reselect the destination marker before leaving the fast-travel point. The last stretch may cross a region with multiple roads or levels, and the hub’s map icon alone does not preserve the exact entrance you meant to find.
Game-specific return strategies
For Elden Ring
- Open the map and locate the remembered map marker or surrounding landmark.
- Place a beacon on the target so it appears on the compass and as a blue light in the world.
- Use the map to choose a route around cliffs, locked passages, or dangerous terrain; do not assume the straight-line bearing is traversable.
- Keep Guidance of Grace separate from your custom beacon in your mental model: Guidance points toward important content, while the beacon records your chosen destination.
For Breath of the Wild
- Place a pin from the map or telescope view.
- Enable the north-fixed minimap option if you need a stable heading during a long return.
- Use towers, shrines, roads, and terrain silhouettes to verify the approach.
- If you own The Master Trials DLC and have access to Hero’s Path, inspect the recorded line for the earlier route; the feature covers up to 200 hours.
For Tears of the Kingdom
- Use the telescope to identify the destination and place a pin.
- Check whether the relevant Purah Pad warp-marker feature has been added through progression.
- Open Footprint Mode when you remember traveling there but not the route.
- Verify the map layer—surface, sky, or depths—before following the marker.
For The Elder Scrolls Online
- Open the world map and select a previously visited Wayshrine near the target.
- Confirm the gold fee and begin travel from the map.
- After loading, set a local waypoint or use the compass to complete the route.
What to compare when a game offers several navigation options
| Game or feature | Player action | Where the guidance appears | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elden Ring beacon | Place a beacon on a map marker | Compass icon and blue light in the world | Guidance of Grace points generally toward important content; a beacon is for a chosen destination |
| Breath of the Wild pins | Place a map pin, including from telescope use | Map; heading can be assisted by a north-fixed minimap | Hero’s Path is optional and part of The Master Trials DLC |
| Tears of the Kingdom tools | Place a telescope pin; use a Purah Pad warp marker when available | Map and, depending on the feature, travel or route displays | Footprint Mode and related additions depend on game progression |
| The Elder Scrolls Online Wayshrines | Select a previously visited Wayshrine from the map | Fast-travel map interface | Travel from anywhere carries a small gold fee |
| ZELDA NOTES | Select a map marker for voice navigation | Supported companion-device navigation and an updating game position | Nintendo Support says the device map updates the in-game position every few seconds; confirm current app and game support |
These examples show why “mark location” is not a single standardized feature. Before relying on a tool, determine whether it accepts arbitrary coordinates or only discovered points, whether it remains visible outside the map, whether it records past movement, and whether unlocking, downloadable content, an add-on, or in-game currency is involved.
Troubleshooting a failed return trip
The marker is missing
Check whether you selected the correct map layer, whether the marker is filtered out by the legend, and whether a limited number of custom markers has caused an older one to be removed. Reopen the map and place a fresh marker at a nearby landmark you can identify.

The marker points somewhere impossible
A straight bearing does not account for vertical levels, locked doors, cliffs, water, or quest-state barriers. Zoom in, identify the nearest reachable road or entrance, and move the marker to that approach. In multilevel worlds, verify whether the target is above or below your current position.
The compass keeps changing
The minimap may be rotating, or the game may be displaying your current facing rather than a fixed north heading. Use a north-fixed setting when available; otherwise pause at a landmark, read the world map, and restart with a known heading.
Fast travel is unavailable
Leave combat, exit restricted interiors, finish the blocking quest step, or travel manually to an unlocked point. Some games disable fast travel while a special mode or event is active. If a fee is required, earn or reserve enough of the relevant currency before attempting the return.
The route history is confusing
History overlays can contain many unrelated excursions. Look for the branch that begins near the remembered hub and ends near a distinctive landmark. Hide other map layers if the interface allows it, then place a permanent destination pin once the correct branch is identified.
Optional physical references
Nintendo’s official information for Breath of the Wild guidebook editions describes a foldout Hyrule world map with place names and a separate map showing Korok locations. A printed map can help with broad orientation or offline planning, but it does not track live position, display your custom pins, or substitute for the game’s map on another title. Current stock, edition availability, and price vary, so treat a physical guide as an optional reference rather than a navigation system.
A simple habit that prevents future searching
Whenever you notice a place worth revisiting, mark it immediately instead of trusting memory. Use a consistent marker type, add a short note if supported, and keep the marker until the associated task is complete. At the end of a session, take a moment to check that important markers still appear on the correct map layer. This small routine turns a difficult “where was that?” search into a short, repeatable trip, regardless of whether the game provides a compass beacon, a footprint overlay, or only a basic map pin.
