Your Valheim seed is available through the world’s metadata, a dedicated server’s console or log, and—in some game builds—the in-game console or F2 overlay. The metadata file is the most dependable route when you can access the world folder; console and overlay commands vary by version. Seeds are case-sensitive and fixed when the world is created.
Choose the method that matches your access
Use the first method you can access without altering the world files. A local player who owns the save can inspect the metadata folder. A dedicated-server owner can read the startup console or log. A player who cannot download server files can try the in-game console or F2 display, but those options are more version-dependent.

Method 1: Read the world metadata file
World metadata is the most consistently documented way to recover a seed. Older worlds use a matching .fwl and .db pair. The .fwl file contains the world name and seed; guides describe the seed as appearing on the second row when the file is opened in a text-capable editor. Newer worlds use a folder with versioned .fwl2 and .db2 files, so do not apply the older single-file instructions blindly.
Find the folder on Windows
- Close Valheim, or at least leave the world before copying its files.
- Open File Explorer and enter
%userprofile%AppDataLocalLowIronGateValheimworlds_localin the address bar. - If you launch Valheim with a custom
-savediroption, use that save directory’sworlds_localsubfolder instead. - Identify the world by its name. For a legacy save, look for the matching
.fwland.dbfiles.
Copy the file to a working location before opening it. This avoids accidentally changing the live save while you inspect it.
Find the folder on Linux
- Open your file manager or terminal.
- Go to
~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_local. - If the server or client was started with
-savedir, follow that custom location instead of the default path. - Locate the matching world files or the newer versioned world folder.
Linux installations can run under a different user account when hosted as a service. If the expected directory is empty, check the account that actually starts Valheim.
Download a dedicated-server world
Use the host’s file manager or FTP facility to download the complete world folder. Do not download only one database or chunk file: the metadata and database must remain together, and 1.0-format worlds also contain additional chunk files. If the host exposes a custom save directory, start there and then open its worlds_local directory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRead a legacy .fwl file
- Make a copy of the
.fwlfile. - Open the copy in Notepad++ or another editor that can display the file contents.
- Look at the second row. The seed is the code associated with the world metadata, not the world’s display name.
- Preserve every letter’s capitalization when you copy the seed.
If the file appears unreadable, do not edit or resave it. Upload the file to a compatible Valheim seed viewer instead, or use the server-console method. A viewer can parse metadata that is inconvenient to read manually; one commonly used option is valheim-map.world.
Handle 1.0-style .fwl2 worlds
Since Valheim 1.0, guides describe worlds as folders under worlds_local containing versioned names such as _main.<n>.fwl2 and _main.<n>.db2, along with chunk files. Keep the entire folder intact. Do not rename .fwl2 to .fwl; the extensions represent different formats, and renaming can make the save unusable. If a seed viewer or editor does not support the newer format, use the server log or an in-game method rather than modifying the files.
Method 2: Read the dedicated-server console or log
This is usually the quickest option for an administrator who can restart the server. The seed is printed while the world generator initializes.

The line may include a number in brackets or parentheses. That number is not the world seed; use the code following the seed: label. The same initialization line is written to the server log, so you can search the saved log if the console scrolled past it.

Method 3: Use the in-game console
Several 2025–2026 community guides report that the console can print the seed, but another guide reports that no seed-printing command is available in its build. Treat this method as a test on your current version, not as a guarantee.
Enable the console through Steam
- Open the Steam Library.
- Right-click Valheim and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, find Launch Options.
- Enter
-console, then close the Properties window. - Start Valheim and join the world whose seed you need.
Try the reported seed commands
- Press
F5to open the console. - Enter
printseedsand submit it. - Read the line labelled world seed.
- If your build rejects that command, try the singular form
printseed.
The output can list dungeon seeds as well as the world seed. Use the value explicitly labelled world seed, not a dungeon entry. On some servers, console commands are restricted to administrators; if the command is denied, ask the server owner to run it or use the metadata and log methods.
Administrators may also see the genloc command in console guidance. It is a location-generation command, not a replacement for reading the world seed.

Method 4: Check the F2 overlay
One current guide reports that pressing F2 inside the world displays the world name and seed alongside FPS and ping. Another guide recommends F2 specifically because its build does not provide a console seed command.
- Enter the target world.
- Press
F2. - Look for a field labelled seed or world seed near the world name.
- Record the value exactly, including capitalization.
If your F2 panel shows only performance statistics, your build or server configuration may not expose the seed there. Move to the metadata or server-log method instead of assuming the seed is unavailable.
Method 5: Search Player.log
Older Steam-forum instructions use the local Player.log. Its location depends on the operating system and installation, so search your Valheim data directory for a file named exactly Player.log.
- Exit Valheim.
- Open the log in a text editor.
- Search for
Initializing world generator. - Look for a line formatted like
seed:<seed> ( <number> ). - Copy the value after
seed:; ignore the number in parentheses.
Newer builds may omit this initialization entry, especially after log rotation or format changes. A missing line does not prove that the world has no seed; use the world folder or server startup log.

Seed formatting and version pitfalls
Capitalization is significant
Seeds are case-sensitive. Two strings that differ only by uppercase and lowercase letters represent different worlds. Copy and paste the value when possible, and do not “correct” capitalization to make it look uniform.

The seed is fixed at world creation
The seed is assigned when the world is created. You cannot change the seed of that existing world by editing its name or entering another value in a console. A different seed requires creating a new world.
Do not mix file-format instructions
Instructions written for a single legacy .fwl file may not match a 1.0 world folder with .fwl2, .db2, and chunk files. Keep all files in a newer folder together and use a method that understands that format.
Respect custom save locations
The default Windows and Linux paths apply only when Valheim is using its standard save directory. A -savedir launch or server option moves the files. Search the configured directory first; otherwise you may inspect an old, unused copy of the world.
Troubleshooting when the seed is not showing
The console says the command is unknown
Try both reported spellings, printseeds and printseed. If neither works, your build may not implement the command, or the server may restrict it. Use F2, the startup log, or the world metadata instead.
F2 shows no seed
F2 seed display is not consistent across builds. Confirm that you are inside the world rather than at the title screen, then press F2 again. If the panel still lacks a seed field, switch methods.

The log contains several numbers
Use the value directly after seed:. The number in brackets or parentheses on the same line is a separate value and is not the seed.
You found several worlds
Match the world name and modification time to the save you actually play. On a server, verify the configured world name rather than selecting the newest-looking file. For legacy saves, keep the matching .fwl and .db pair together.
The expected folder is empty
Check whether Valheim was launched with -savedir, and check the account that runs a dedicated server. A cloud or service setup can place files outside the default user profile. Ask the server administrator for the active save directory if you cannot identify it.
A seed viewer rejects the file
Confirm that you uploaded the metadata file or complete world folder required by that viewer. Do not rename .fwl2 to .fwl to force compatibility. Use the console or log if the viewer does not support your world format.
Verify the result before sharing it
- Compare the seed’s capitalization with the value shown in a second source, such as the server log and the metadata file.
- Confirm that the world name belongs to the active save, especially when several worlds use similar names.
- If you use a map viewer, enter the seed exactly as copied and select the appropriate game version when the viewer offers that choice.
- Keep the original files unchanged; inspection should not require editing the save.
For a player who cannot access files, ask the host to send the exact world-seed field from the console or log. This avoids accidentally sharing a dungeon seed or the bracketed initialization number.
