The U.S. Census Bureau’s USA Trade Online is the official starting point for finding state export numbers. Open the state-level exports report, select your state of Origin of Movement, choose an HS or NAICS commodity classification, set a destination (or World Total), select a value measure and monthly or annual periods, then download the results as CSV, XLSX or JSON. To measure change reliably, keep the state definition, commodity code, destination scope, measure and time frequency identical in every query.
What state export data actually measures
State export statistics describe goods attributed to a state when they leave the United States. Census assigns that geography using Origin of Movement: State Exports are Origin of Movement, which is the state where the goods begin its journey to the port of export.
This is a logistics-based assignment, not necessarily the location of a company’s headquarters, the place where every component was manufactured, or the final destination of the business that sold the goods.
For example, goods manufactured in one state and trucked to a port in another can be credited to the state where the export journey begins under the Origin of Movement rule. Do not substitute a port location or a state-of-destination import series when you are trying to answer an export question.

Where can I find my state’s export numbers?
USA Trade Online: the primary source
Use USA Trade Online when you need a custom, downloadable table. It lets you combine state, commodity, destination, measure and time dimensions in one report. This is the best choice for a one-off answer such as “What did my state export to Germany last year?” and for building a documented series that someone else can reproduce.
International Trade API: repeatable retrievals
Use the Census International Trade API when you will pull the same series repeatedly, such as a monthly monitoring job or a data pipeline. Census’ historical documentation identifies monthly API coverage from 2013 to the present for the relevant state-trade data. Confirm the exact product and series availability before coding, because coverage can differ by table and classification.
TradeStats Express: a visual cross-check
TradeStats Express, a Department of Commerce dashboard, presents state exports and imports by product and partner using Census-published data. It is convenient for exploring a chart or checking whether a result looks plausible. For a precise, reproducible analysis, record the underlying Census series and query settings rather than citing only a dashboard view.
How to find your state’s export data in USA Trade Online
- Open the state-level exports product. Choose the USA Trade Online report for state exports, not a national exports table or a state-imports product.
- Set State of Origin. Select the state you are studying. This field implements Origin of Movement. A port state or State of Destination is not an equivalent substitute.
- Choose a commodity system. Select HS for a customs-based product question, or NAICS for an industry-oriented grouping. Record the system, code, level and description exactly as displayed.
- Select the commodity code. A broad chapter or sector answers a different question from a detailed code. Do not compare an HS code with a NAICS code as though they were the same product category.
- Choose the country dimension. Pick a named destination for a bilateral question. Choose World Total or all countries for the state’s overall exports, depending on the label offered by the report.
- Select measures. Use total export value for a headline dollar trend. Add shipping weight or transportation measures only when you need a physical-volume or logistics perspective; they are not interchangeable with value.
- Configure time. Choose annual periods for clean full-year comparisons. Add monthly periods when seasonality, a disruption or a turning point matters. The state products support monthly and annual views, and may offer cumulative year-to-date periods; exact historical availability depends on the selected report.
- Run and inspect the table. Before interpreting a number, check the period label, units, state, commodity, destination and measure. A value can be technically correct but answer the wrong question if one of these dimensions changed.
- Download the result. The current USA Trade Online user guide lists JSON, CSV and XLSX export formats. Keep the raw file unchanged and save a note or screenshot of the query selections.
How to choose HS versus NAICS

Classification choice changes the meaning of the result. If your question is “How much machinery did the state ship?”, an HS selection may be appropriate when you can define the product precisely. If the question is “How large are exports associated with this manufacturing industry?”, a NAICS grouping may be more useful. State-level NAICS detail is commonly available at four digits, while HS is commonly available at six-digit detail, but the report you select controls the actual levels offered.
How to see what your state exports to a specific country
Use a named destination in the country dimension and leave every other axis explicit. A defensible bilateral query records:
- State of Origin;
- Destination country;
- HS or NAICS system and exact code;
- Measure, normally total value for a dollar comparison;
- Monthly, annual or cumulative year-to-date period; and
- the download date and any data-vintage or revision note.
Do not infer that a destination-country total is the value ultimately consumed there. The destination field describes the export partner in the trade statistics; it does not turn Origin of Movement into a measure of where a company is headquartered or where every product is finally used.
How to download state export data to Excel, CSV or JSON
CSV or XLSX for spreadsheet analysis
Choose CSV when you want a portable flat file or plan to load the data into a spreadsheet, database or visualization tool. Choose XLSX when you want a workbook that opens directly in spreadsheet software. Preserve the downloaded file as the raw input, then make calculations in a separate worksheet so the original values remain auditable.

JSON for code and structured workflows
JSON is useful when a script, notebook or data pipeline will consume the response. Save the query parameters beside the file: state, classification, code, country, measure, period range and retrieval date. This prevents a later user from having to guess what the series represents.
Minimum metadata to save with any download
- Origin-of-Movement state;
- HS or NAICS system, version if shown, level, code and description;
- destination country or World Total;
- measure and units;
- monthly, annual or year-to-date frequency;
- period range;
- download date; and
- any provisional, revision or suppression notation displayed by the product.
How to compare state exports year over year
First decide whether the comparison is annual or monthly. For annual analysis, compare complete calendar years. For monthly analysis, compare the same month in different years when seasonality is likely—for example, March with March—not January with the immediately preceding December.
For two periods, let the earlier value be E and the later value be L:
- Absolute change:
L − E. - Percentage change:
(L − E) / E × 100.
If E is zero, report the absolute change and state that a percentage rate is undefined. Do not label a move from zero to a positive value as an ordinary percentage increase.

Also record the data vintage or revision date. Changing any one of them can create an apparent increase or decrease that is actually a change in the query.

Put the calculated absolute and percentage changes beside this table, not in place of the raw values. Readers need to see the periods and units before they can evaluate the change.
Monthly, annual and year-to-date data: which should you use?
Annual data
Annual values are usually the clearest choice for a long-run trend because they avoid most month-to-month noise and align with complete calendar years. They are appropriate for statements such as “exports were higher in 2024 than in 2023,” provided both years are complete and the query is otherwise identical.

Monthly data
Monthly values reveal seasonality, sudden shocks and turning points. Compare the same month year over year when a product has a seasonal shipping pattern. A single month can be unusually high or low, so show several months or explain why one month is analytically important.
Cumulative year-to-date data
Year-to-date totals answer a different question: how much has been recorded from the start of the current year through a specified month. Label the cutoff month and do not compare a partial year-to-date total with a full annual total. Census documentation describes monthly, annual and cumulative year-to-date state-export periods beginning in the early 2000s, but exact availability varies by product and series.
How to track changes with the International Trade API
- Define the series before writing code. Write down the state, classification and code, destination, measure and monthly period range.
- Check historical coverage. The historical documentation identifies monthly coverage from 2013 to the present for the relevant state-trade data; verify that your chosen series supports the dates you need.
- Request one small period first. Confirm that the response fields, units and labels match the USA Trade Online table.
- Store the raw response. Keep the JSON response and the request parameters together, with the retrieval date.
- Automate validation. Have the script check for missing periods, changed labels, zero denominators and revised observations before calculating growth rates.
- Re-run consistently. Use the same parameters for each monthly pull and log any changed observation or revision.
The API is valuable because the query can be repeated exactly, not because it removes the need to understand Census definitions. A perfectly repeatable request for the wrong state concept still produces the wrong answer.
How to use TradeStats Express without losing precision

Use its charts to spot a pattern, then reproduce the selection in the Census state-export product when the result will support a report, policy decision or published statistic. Save the Census classification, code, destination, measure and period alongside any chart image. This makes the number traceable if the dashboard layout changes.
Why your number may change after you download it
Latest periods can be provisional
Treat the latest month as provisional for narrative purposes. Current periods can be revised, so recheck the source before publishing a statement about the newest month.

Revisions and data vintages
A later download can differ from an earlier file even when the query is unchanged. Record the retrieval date or other vintage indicator and do not silently overwrite the original file.
Different classifications produce different totals
An HS product total and a NAICS industry total are not two measurements of the same category. They are different classification systems with different boundaries.

Different measures answer different questions
Export value reflects dollars, while shipping weight and transportation measures describe physical or logistical characteristics. A higher dollar value does not necessarily mean more weight shipped.
Different geography fields are not interchangeable
Origin of Movement for exports and State of Destination for imports answer different geographic questions. A port-based assumption can misattribute goods to the wrong state.

Troubleshooting common mistakes
“I selected the right state, but the number looks like a port total.”
Reopen the report settings and confirm that the geography field is State of Origin in the state-exports product. A port or state-of-destination selection is not the Census export definition.
“My year-over-year percentage is enormous.”
Check whether the earlier value is very small or zero, whether one period is monthly and the other annual, and whether the destination or commodity code changed. If the earlier value is zero, use the absolute change and mark the percentage as undefined.
“The spreadsheet total does not match the dashboard.”
Compare units, rounding, period type and filters. Confirm that the spreadsheet contains World Total versus a named country, and that it uses the same HS or NAICS code and measure.
“I cannot find a historical month.”
Check the selected product’s availability rather than assuming every classification goes back equally far. The historical page identifies relevant monthly API coverage from 2013 onward, while some state-export series have documentation reaching into the early 2000s.

“The newest observation changed.”
Keep both downloads, note their retrieval dates and identify the revised period. Use the newer value only after confirming that it is the intended vintage for your analysis.

A reproducible state-export checklist
- Is this the state-level exports product?
- Is geography set to Origin of Movement?
- Did you record the exact HS or NAICS system, level, code and description?
- Is the destination a named country or World Total, and is that scope intentional?
- Are you using value, weight or transportation measures for the question you actually asked?
- Are both comparison periods monthly, annual or the same year-to-date cutoff?
- Did you retain the raw CSV, XLSX or JSON file?
- Did you save the query settings, units and retrieval date?
- Did you check for provisional periods, revisions and zero denominators?
What to remember
Start with USA Trade Online, use Origin of Movement, and document every filter. HS and NAICS are different lenses; country and World Total answer different questions; and monthly, annual and year-to-date periods cannot be mixed casually. CSV and XLSX are practical for spreadsheet work, while JSON and the International Trade API make recurring analysis reproducible. TradeStats Express can help you explore or cross-check, but the Census series and its exact settings should be the authoritative record.
