Open Settings on your Kindle Fire or Amazon Fire tablet. On newer models, go to Device Options and select About Fire Tablet; then look for a field labelled Fire OS version, Software version, or, on some older devices, System Version. Menu names vary by generation, so use the version displayed on your tablet rather than inferring it from the model name.
Where to find the Fire OS version
- Open Settings. Tap the Settings app on the tablet.
- Open the device information area. On newer Fire tablets, tap Device Options, then About Fire Tablet. Amazon documents this area for identifying the device model. Amazon’s model-identification instructions describe the current route.
- Read the software information. Look for a field called Fire OS version, Software version, or, on some older devices, System Version. Labels and placement can differ. Amazon’s original Kindle Fire user guide says the Device settings page displays the system version. Amazon’s Kindle Fire user guide applies to that older interface.
Model name and software version are different
The model name tells you which tablet you own; the software version tells you which system software is installed now. Amazon’s model specifications and update listings cover different generations and are useful for identification and comparison, but neither replaces checking the version shown in Settings. Amazon’s model-identification help and Amazon’s Fire tablet specifications provide model context.
There is no single Fire OS version for every Kindle Fire or Fire tablet. Amazon’s listings include Fire OS 8 on several recent models, Fire OS 5 on some older Fire models, Fire OS 4 on certain 2013 Kindle Fire models, and Fire OS 2 on legacy 2012 models. The exact tablet and its installed software determine what you should see.

- Record the exact model and generation from the device information screen, as well as the software version currently installed.
- Find that exact model in Amazon’s Fire tablet software update listing. Do not assume that a version available for a newer tablet applies to yours.
- Compare like with like. The update listing is model-specific; an OS generation available for one Fire tablet does not mean another generation can install it.
As listed on Amazon’s update page when accessed in 2026, Fire OS 8 version 8.3.3.7 is shown for the Fire HD 10 (13th generation), Fire Max 11 (13th generation), Fire HD 8 (12th generation), and Fire 7 (12th generation). This is a dated listing, not a permanent latest-version claim; check Amazon’s page for the current entry for your exact model.

Automatic updates and manual installation
Amazon says Fire tablets automatically download software updates when connected to the internet. If you need to install an update manually, first identify your exact tablet model and follow Amazon’s model-specific instructions. Choose no update package based only on a similar product name or screen size. Amazon’s software update page provides the model-specific listings and guidance.

Amazon’s Fire Tablet Device Software Security Updates policy says a tablet bought new from Amazon as seller on Amazon.com will receive security updates until at least four years after purchase, or until a later date stated on the policy page. Amazon may continue updates beyond that period, subject to technical and other limitations. The stated period does not promise how long the tablet itself will last; check the current policy and your device’s purchase circumstances. Amazon’s security-update policy has the qualifications and any later dates.
