To see your phone’s current security patch, open Settings > About phone > Android version and read Android security update. That screen also lists the Android version, Google Play system update, and build number as separate items. To look for a newer system update, open Settings > System > Software updates and follow the prompts. Menu names vary by manufacturer, and Pixel devices may use a slightly different label.
Before installing, connect to Wi-Fi and charge the phone to at least 75 percent. Updates can be large and may take time. If no update appears, that does not automatically mean something is broken: release timing depends on the device, manufacturer, and mobile carrier, and older phones may not support a newer Android version.
What the Android security patch date tells you
The Android security patch date is the date shown for the phone’s Android security update. It is a software-status field, not the same thing as the Android version number. A phone can keep the same Android version while receiving a newer security update, or it can show a newer Android version with a security-update date that is a different month.
Google’s About phone > Android version screen separates several details that are easy to confuse:

These fields answer different questions. If someone asks which security patch is installed, give the value beside Android security update. If they ask which Android release or build is installed, provide those fields separately.
Prepare before downloading or installing
Use a Wi-Fi connection
Connect the phone to Wi-Fi before starting an update. Google recommends Wi-Fi because update packages can be large. A stable connection also reduces the chance that a download is interrupted while the phone is retrieving the software.
Charge to at least 75 percent
Charge the phone to at least 75 percent before installation. This is Google’s preparation guidance for the update process. Keep the phone connected to power if the device or its on-screen instructions request it.
Allow time for the process
An update may take time to download, prepare, install, and restart. Do not treat a period of apparent inactivity as proof that the update failed. Read the status message on the phone and leave it undisturbed while installation is in progress.
Find the installed security patch date
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap About phone. On a tablet, the equivalent entry may be About tablet.
- Tap Android version.
- Read the date beside Android security update.
- If you are documenting the device, record the Android version, Google Play system update, and Build number in separate fields rather than combining them into one “update date.”
The displayed date is the patch level that the device reports as installed. It is the most useful value for a support ticket, an internal device inventory, or a comparison between two phones.
Check for and install a newer update
- Return to the main Settings screen.
- Tap System.
- Tap Software updates.
- Read the status shown by the phone. If an update is offered, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it.
- When the phone asks to restart, accept the restart when you are ready for the installation to finish.
This manual check works even if an earlier notification was dismissed or never appeared. The exact wording can differ by phone maker, Android version, and carrier, so do not assume every device will display the same sequence of labels.

What happens after the download
On Pixel phones and Pixel Tablet, Google says a downloaded Android update becomes active after the next restart. Many other Android devices restart automatically during installation. Follow the behavior and instructions shown on your own device; do not interrupt a restart that is part of the update process.

When the menu labels do not match
Android manufacturers can customize Settings, so the general Google path is a starting point rather than a guarantee of identical labels. You may see a menu with different wording or a different grouping of update controls.
On devices that have a Security and privacy section, Google notes that System and updates may expose separate entries for Security update and Google Play system update. If you see both, use the entry named Security update for the Android security-patch status and keep the Play system value separate.
If neither System nor Software updates appears where expected, use the manufacturer’s support instructions for the exact model and software version. The model-specific documentation is the appropriate authority for a customized Settings layout.
How to interpret the update screen
An update is available
If the software-update screen offers a download or installation, the phone has identified software that it can offer to that device at that time. Read any requirements shown on screen, connect to Wi-Fi, reach the 75-percent charge recommendation, and proceed through the prompts.

The phone says it is up to date
An “up to date” message means the phone is not currently offering a newer update through that check. It does not establish a universal release date for every other Android phone, because update availability varies by device, manufacturer, and carrier.

The Android version changed but the patch date did not match your expectation
Check the specific field labels rather than inferring the security date from the Android version. Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update, and build number are separate values and can change on different schedules.
The Google Play system date is newer
A newer Google Play system date does not replace an older Android security-update date. Record both labels exactly as displayed. They represent separate update categories.
Why two phones receive updates at different times
Android does not have one release calendar that applies identically to every phone. Timing can vary according to the device model, the manufacturer’s software process, and the mobile carrier. A security patch that appears on one phone may therefore arrive later on another phone, even when both use Android.
For an exact schedule, consult the support information for the phone’s manufacturer and carrier. Pixel owners can also consult Google’s Pixel-specific update information. A delay by itself is not evidence of a failed installation.
When comparing phones, include the model and carrier in your notes. “Android version” alone is not enough to explain why two devices show different patch dates.
Troubleshoot a missing update
1. Check again after restarting
If no update appears, restart the phone and run the software-update check again. Use this as a first diagnostic step when the device’s menu or support instructions suggest it. A restart can clear a temporarily interrupted update check without changing the phone’s reported patch information.

2. Consider an interrupted download
Google’s guidance says an interrupted download may retry automatically over the next few days. If the phone indicates that a download was interrupted, allow the device to retry and keep it connected to Wi-Fi and sufficiently charged.

Update timing depends on the device, manufacturer, and carrier. If the phone is not offering a patch that another device has already received, that difference alone does not prove a fault. Check the manufacturer’s and carrier’s information for the exact model and region before treating the delay as an error.
4. Verify that the device is supported
Older devices cannot always run newer Android versions. A missing major Android release may therefore reflect the phone’s support limits rather than a broken update mechanism. Check support for the exact model instead of assuming that the newest Android version can be installed on every device.
5. Use the model-specific support route
If the update menu is missing, repeatedly fails, or uses unfamiliar labels, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for that model. Those instructions account for vendor-specific Settings layouts and carrier distribution rules that the general Android path cannot describe.
Check the result after installation
- Wait for the update process and any required restart to finish.
- Open Settings > About phone (or About tablet), then open Android version.
- Read the new Android security update date.
- Record the Android version, Google Play system update, and build number separately if you need an audit trail.
- If the values have not changed, use the software-update screen and the manufacturer’s support instructions to determine whether the download completed, whether another restart is required, or whether the device is not eligible for a newer release.
The post-install check confirms what the phone actually reports, rather than relying on a notification or an assumption that a downloaded package became active immediately.

Use one row per phone and preserve the date on which you made the check. This prevents a later reader from mistaking a historical status for the phone’s current state.
Older phones, tablets, and unsupported releases
The procedure applies to Android phones and, with the corresponding label, Android tablets. On a tablet, start with About tablet rather than About phone.
Do not equate “newest Android version available somewhere” with “newest Android version supported by this device.” Google specifically cautions that older devices may not be able to run newer Android versions. The correct question is whether the exact model is supported, not whether another Android device has already received the release.

If a phone shows a security-patch date but no newer Android version, those facts can coexist. The device may have received a security update without being eligible for a later major Android release, or the manufacturer and carrier may not yet be offering that release to the device.
A compact record for support or troubleshooting
When contacting a manufacturer, carrier, or administrator, provide the information in this order:
- Manufacturer and exact model.
- Carrier, if applicable.
- Android version.
- Android security update date.
- Google Play system update date.
- Build number.
- The exact message shown under Software updates, including whether an update is offered, downloading, installing, or unavailable.
- Whether the phone was connected to Wi-Fi, charged to at least 75 percent, restarted, and checked again.
This separates the device’s identity, its installed patch level, and the result of the current update check. It also gives support staff the details needed to distinguish a menu-location issue, an interrupted download, a rollout delay, and an unsupported Android release.
