Start with Microsoft’s Windows on Arm Ready Software directory, then verify the publisher’s current release and check every driver, plug-in, shell extension, and peripheral your workflow needs. Prefer an Arm64-native build. If none exists, Windows 11 on Arm can emulate x86 and x64 desktop apps, but emulation cannot make an incompatible driver work or guarantee the same performance and features.
The reliable way to check an app before you depend on it
Use this order for each app you care about:
- Search Microsoft’s Windows on Arm Ready Software resource. Read the listed product, version, component, and status details rather than treating a name match as a permanent guarantee. Microsoft describes the directory as maintained, so entries can change.
- Open the publisher’s download and support pages. Confirm that the exact release you plan to install supports Windows on Arm or has an Arm64 build. The directory is a useful first check; the publisher controls the release and its support commitments.
- Identify the architecture. Arm64 is native. x86 and x64 are Intel/AMD desktop binaries that Windows 11 on Arm can run through emulation. Do not apply Windows 11 guidance to a Windows 10 on Arm machine without checking the difference: Windows 10 on Arm supports x86 emulation, not the x64 emulation described for Windows 11.
- List dependencies. Look for kernel-mode drivers, user-mode print drivers, shell extensions, plug-ins, services, anti-cheat modules, or software that must load into another Windows process. These components need compatible Arm64 versions; ordinary app emulation does not translate a driver.
- Test the real job. Install the intended version, open representative files, use the features you actually need, and attach the peripherals involved. A program that opens successfully may still fail at printing, device access, plug-in loading, or another critical step.
- Use per-app emulation settings only when needed. If an x86/x64 app has a compatibility problem, Windows exposes additional controls in the executable’s Properties > Compatibility page. Change one setting at a time and retest; a setting can improve compatibility while reducing speed or preventing launch.
This process separates three questions that are often confused: whether Windows can start the program, whether it performs well enough, and whether the complete workflow—including drivers and hardware—works.
Native Arm64 versus emulated x86 and x64
An Arm64-native application contains code built for the processor in a Snapdragon laptop. It runs without translating the app’s instructions. Microsoft says native builds can provide better performance, responsiveness, and battery efficiency.

Windows on Arm translates its user-mode code while the program runs. Microsoft’s documentation states: “Windows 11 on Arm supports emulation of both x86 and x64 apps.” That capability lets many existing desktop applications run without an Arm-native release, but translation adds overhead and does not promise identical behavior for every workload.

“Runs” therefore means only that the application’s user-mode code can start and operate in some circumstances. It is not a certification that every feature, extension, file format, device, or performance target will work.
How to use Microsoft’s compatibility directory
Search the exact product
Enter the app’s product name and distinguish it from similarly named utilities, editions, and add-ons. If the directory shows a version or component, compare that detail with the installer or release offered by the publisher. A listing for one edition or release should not be read as approval for every other edition.
Read status and component information
Check whether the entry describes the main desktop application, a plug-in, a driver, or another component. A directory result may answer the app-architecture question while leaving an accessory or integration unaddressed. Record the version and status you found so you can recheck it when the app updates.

Use the publisher’s own download and support documentation to determine whether the current release is Arm64-native, supports Windows on Arm through emulation, or has restrictions. Publisher documentation is the authority for what that particular build supports; Microsoft’s directory is a starting point, not a substitute for release-specific information.
Check the Windows version before interpreting compatibility
Windows 11 on Arm
Windows 11 on Arm supports emulation for both x86 and x64 desktop applications. Microsoft introduced the Prism emulator with Windows 11 version 24H2. Prism is included in the operating system, requires no separate component installation, and is tuned for Snapdragon processors. It is available on supported Windows 11 on Arm devices running 24H2, while some Prism performance features require hardware available only on Snapdragon X series.

Windows 10 on Arm
Windows 10 on Arm has a different emulation scope: the guidance cited by Microsoft covers x86 emulation, not x64. If a publisher offers only an x64 desktop installer, do not assume it will work on Windows 10 simply because the same product runs on a Windows 11 Snapdragon laptop.
Why the distinction matters
“Snapdragon laptop” identifies the processor family, not one uniform software environment. Snapdragon generations, Windows editions, build versions, and device firmware can differ. Note the laptop’s Windows version and build before you rely on a compatibility statement, especially when evaluating Prism-related behavior.
Drivers and extensions are the most common hidden failure
Windows emulation handles user-mode application code. It does not emulate drivers. Microsoft specifically documents that kernel-mode components and user-mode print drivers must be built as native Arm64 code.
Kernel-mode drivers
Hardware utilities, security software, virtualization tools, storage managers, specialized input devices, and other products may install code that runs in the Windows kernel. If the required driver has no Arm64 build, the application may install or launch while its hardware feature remains unavailable.
Print drivers
A print application can open documents yet fail when you select a printer or a device-specific option. User-mode print drivers also need native Arm64 builds. Check the printer manufacturer’s driver support separately from the editor or viewer you use to create the document.

Shell extensions and in-process plug-ins
Some software adds right-click commands, file previews, codecs, browser components, or plug-ins that load into Windows processes. Those components cannot rely on ordinary x86/x64 app emulation in the same way as a standalone user-mode program. Ask the publisher whether each extension has an Arm64-compatible version.

Attached devices and services
Scanners, measurement equipment, audio interfaces, cameras, security keys, and other peripherals can require a driver, service, plug-in, or vendor control panel. Validate the device path—not just the main application—before moving an important workflow to the laptop.
A practical pre-install checklist
- Write down the exact app name, edition, release channel, and version you intend to use.
- Record whether your laptop runs Windows 11 24H2 or another Windows release on Arm.
- Search the Windows on Arm Ready Software directory and note its version, component, and status information.
- Check the publisher’s current download and support pages for “Arm64,” “Windows on Arm,” or a documented emulation requirement.
- Find out whether the installer adds a kernel-mode driver, print driver, shell extension, service, plug-in, or device-specific component.
- Check the maker of each required peripheral for an Arm64 driver and Windows-version support.
- Prepare representative files and a short list of must-have operations for your test.
- Keep a recovery path available if the app is business-critical: a known-good computer, an earlier supported release, or a way to remove the new installation.
How to test the workflow instead of just launching the app
1. Install the intended release
Use the same edition and release you expect to keep. A different installer can contain different architecture choices, drivers, or plug-ins, so testing a trial build does not establish that another package will behave identically.
2. Exercise representative files
Open the file types and project sizes that matter to you. Save a copy, export to the formats your team uses, and reopen the result. This catches failures that a blank document will not reveal.
3. Run the critical features
Follow the shortest path that represents real work: import from the required source, edit, calculate or render, save, print, synchronize, or publish as appropriate. Verify the one or two features that would make the app unusable if they failed.

4. Connect every required device
Pair or attach the actual printer, scanner, camera, interface, or other hardware. Confirm discovery, data transfer, device controls, and the final output. If a feature depends on a driver, test it even when the main window behaves normally.
5. Check plug-ins and integrations
Load the extensions, codecs, file providers, cloud integrations, and shell features your workflow requires. A native or emulated core application does not prove that a third-party extension is compatible.
6. Observe stability and responsiveness
Repeat the critical operation more than once and test a normal workload rather than a single small file. Note crashes, hangs, missing menus, slow startup, excessive battery drain, and any error that appears only after a device or plug-in is active.
This is a validation method, not a promise that a directory entry guarantees your result. App versions, device configurations, and workflows change.

Microsoft’s Surface FAQ identifies Microsoft 365 applications including Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, and OneNote as native Arm experiences. It also names Chrome, Spotify, Zoom, WhatsApp, Blender, Affinity Suite, and DaVinci Resolve as applications that run natively on Arm.

These are Microsoft-published examples, not a blanket approval for every release or every feature. Confirm the current publisher build, Windows version, plug-ins, and peripherals before treating one of these applications as suitable for a specific job. A product can change architecture or dependencies between releases, and a device configuration can expose requirements that a basic installation does not.
Troubleshoot an app that will not work correctly
The app will not install
- Confirm that the installer matches your Windows version and is not an unsupported architecture-specific package.
- Look for a newer publisher release or an Arm64 installer.
- Check whether setup is trying to install a driver or service. That component may be the blocker even if the main program supports emulation.
The app installs but will not launch
- Confirm that you are on Windows 11 if you expect x64 emulation; Windows 10 on Arm has a narrower emulation scope.
- Check the publisher’s support notes for required drivers, services, or security modules.
- Open the executable’s Properties > Compatibility page and review the available per-app emulation options. Change only one option, retry, and undo it if launch becomes less reliable.
The app launches but a feature fails
- Identify whether the failed feature touches a printer, external device, kernel component, shell extension, or plug-in.
- Find an Arm64 version of that dependency from its publisher or hardware maker.
- Retest with the dependency removed or disabled, if the app allows it. If the core app works then, the dependency—not emulation of the main executable—is the likely limitation.
The app works but feels slow or drains more battery
Check whether an Arm64-native release exists and compare it with the emulated build under the same workload. Emulation overhead varies by application, and Microsoft’s general guidance favors native builds for performance and efficiency. Do not assume a per-app compatibility setting will improve speed; those controls are troubleshooting measures and can trade performance for compatibility.
A setting change makes things worse
Return to the executable’s Compatibility page, undo the last change, and retest the unmodified configuration. Microsoft notes that per-app emulation adjustments can cause an application to crash or fail to launch, so preserve the setting that produced the most reliable result rather than stacking multiple changes.
A simple decision framework

What “works well” should mean for your decision
For a casual utility, successful launch and normal interaction may be sufficient. For a work application, define success more strictly:
- The exact release installs on your Windows version.
- Core files open, save, and export correctly.
- Required plug-ins and integrations load.
- Every essential printer or peripheral works with an Arm64-compatible driver.
- The app remains stable during a representative workload.
- Performance and battery behavior are acceptable compared with your needs.
An Arm64 label improves the odds for the application itself, while an emulated x86/x64 build can be perfectly usable for many user-mode tasks. Neither label answers the driver and workflow questions by itself. The dependable answer comes from the directory check, publisher confirmation, dependency review, and a test of the work you actually perform.
