The quickest check is in Joomla Administrator: open System → Information Panel → System Information and read Database Type and Database Version. To find the database name, host, username, and table prefix, inspect the site-root configuration.php file or the relevant Global Configuration and server settings. If you cannot access either Joomla Administrator or the files, your hosting provider or server administrator must confirm the connection details.
Start with the Joomla Administrator screen
Use this route when the site loads normally and you have a Joomla Administrator or Super User account. It is read-only, fast, and shows the database information Joomla is actually reporting at runtime.

- Sign in to the Joomla Administrator area.
- Open System from the Administrator menu.
- Choose Information Panel → System Information.
- Locate Database Type and Database Version.
Database Type tells you which database driver or type Joomla is configured to use. This is the field to check when you need to know whether the installation is using a MySQL-family database or another supported type. Database Version is the server version reported to Joomla; it is not the Joomla application version.
Do not confuse this screen with the PHP or web-server sections on the same page. Those describe the execution environment, while the database fields describe the server Joomla is connected to.

Find the database name, host, user, and table prefix
The System Information page may identify the type and version without displaying every connection secret. For the complete connection record, inspect the Joomla configuration file or the configuration-related panels available in your version.

Use the Configuration File view when it is available
Current Joomla documentation presents System Information and Configuration File as separate panels in the same System Information area. If your Administrator interface offers a Configuration File view, open it to review the configuration values without downloading the file. Availability and the exact labels depend on the Joomla major version and the permissions of your account.
Use the view to confirm the database name, host, user, and table prefix. Avoid copying the complete configuration into a support ticket or public forum: it can contain the database password and other sensitive settings. If support needs a value, provide only the specific non-secret field requested.
Read the site-root configuration.php file
Every Joomla installation creates a file named configuration.php in the root directory of the site. This is the most complete source for the connection settings, especially when the Administrator interface is unavailable.

Open the file safely
Use one of the following administrative methods, depending on what your host provides:
- Hosting file manager: Open the document root used by the Joomla site and view
configuration.phpin the file editor. - FTP or SFTP: Connect to the site account, locate the Joomla root, and download the file for local inspection. Prefer encrypted SFTP when the host supports it.
- SSH: Change to the Joomla document root and use a read-only command such as
grepto locate the database properties. Do not overwrite the file while you are only identifying values.
Locate the relevant properties
Search for the settings corresponding to dbtype, host, user, password, db, and dbprefix. Joomla’s installation terminology calls these Database Type, Hostname, Username, Password, Database Name, and Table Prefix. The property names may be displayed with the PHP configuration syntax used by your Joomla release, but their meanings remain the same.

The database type answers “which kind of database?”; the host and database name identify where Joomla connects; the user and password authenticate the connection; and the prefix tells you which table names belong to this installation.
Do not edit values just to inspect them
Opening the file is an identification task, not a configuration change. Changing a host, database name, user, password, or prefix can prevent Joomla from connecting or make it look for tables that do not exist. Joomla’s installation guidance warns that changing database settings after installation can break the site unless you have a complete copy of the current database.

Check Global Configuration and hosting details
Joomla’s Global Configuration contains server-related settings, and a hosting control panel may show the database account, database name, and hostname used by the site. These interfaces vary by host and Joomla version, so use them as confirmation rather than assuming that every label or menu is identical.
If the host provides a database-management page, match its database name and user to the values in configuration.php. A control panel can list several databases or users, so do not infer the active one from a similarly named account; compare the exact values.
What to do when you cannot log in or open files
If you have neither Administrator access nor filesystem access, Joomla cannot reveal the settings through the public website. Contact the hosting provider or server administrator and ask for:
- the database type and server version used by the Joomla installation;
- the database hostname;
- the database name;
- the database username; and
- confirmation that the account has permission to use that database.
Do not ask for the password in an ordinary email or public ticket. If a credential must be reset, use the host’s secure process and update Joomla only after you have a verified backup and the replacement values.

Understand the values before changing anything
Database type versus database version
The type identifies the adapter or database family Joomla is configured to use. The version identifies the server release reported by that adapter. Two sites can use the same database type while running different server versions, so record both when reporting an environment or diagnosing compatibility.
Database name versus hostname
The database name selects the logical database containing Joomla’s tables. The hostname identifies the machine or service where that database server runs. On some hosts both are local to the web server; on others the hostname points to a separate database service. A correct database name with the wrong host still produces a connection failure.
Table prefix
Joomla prepends the table prefix to its table names. A prefix can distinguish one site’s tables from another site’s tables in a shared database. When inspecting a database manually, include the prefix when identifying tables; looking only for an unprefixed name can make a healthy installation appear to be missing.

A move to another server, domain, or hosting account can leave the file pointing to the old database service. Joomla’s troubleshooting guidance specifically directs maintainers to check configuration.php after a move or connection failure.

- Make a complete copy of the current database and site files before changing settings.
- Read the current
host,db,user, anddbprefixvalues from the site’s configuration file. - Compare those values with the database name, hostname, and user shown in the new hosting control panel.
- Ask the host to verify that the database account exists and has permission to use the selected database.
- Check the password through the host’s secure credential-reset process rather than guessing repeatedly.
- After a controlled correction, test both the public site and Administrator login. Keep the backup until the site is confirmed stable.
If the type or version shown in Joomla differs from what the host says is installed, stop and ask the server administrator to reconcile the driver and server configuration. Do not change the database type simply because another value is more familiar.
Joomla version and menu differences
The current Joomla 5.x documentation uses System → Information Panel → System Information. Older Joomla documentation may show Site → System Information instead. Follow the wording in the installed version rather than assuming a missing menu means the information is unavailable.

Security checklist
- Never publish the database password or the entire
configuration.phpfile. - Use private, authenticated channels when sending a host or database name to support.
- Do not alter connection settings merely to identify them.
- Keep a complete database and file backup before any migration or configuration change.
- After a migration, have the host confirm database permissions instead of repeatedly changing values.
- Remove downloaded copies of
configuration.phpfrom shared computers and temporary folders when you finish.
A practical decision path
Use the Administrator System Information screen when you only need the database type or version. Open the Configuration File view or read configuration.php when you need the database name, host, user, or table prefix. Use the hosting provider or server administrator when neither Joomla nor the filesystem is accessible. This order gives you the needed detail while minimizing exposure of credentials.
