The fastest way to find data-hungry apps is to use the usage screen built into your phone. On an iPhone, open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) and scroll through the app list. On Android, search Settings for data usage, mobile data, or app data usage, then open the per-app report. Compare the period shown on the phone with your carrier’s billing period before treating any figure as your bill total.

Both platforms show which apps consumed the most cellular data, but the menus, reset controls, and restrictions differ. The steps below explain how to read the figures, investigate system activity, and reduce usage without accidentally breaking background updates.

What the numbers actually mean

Phone settings record cellular (mobile) traffic attributed to apps and some system functions. They do not automatically represent the amount your carrier will bill. A phone may count from the date its statistics were last reset, while the carrier counts from a fixed billing-cycle start date. Carrier accounting can also use different rounding or session rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wi-Fi traffic is normally reported separately or excluded from the cellular total. If an app appears low in the cellular list but you used it heavily on Wi-Fi, that is expected. Conversely, an app can use cellular data unexpectedly when Wi-Fi is weak. On iPhone, Apple’s Wi-Fi Assist feature can switch a poor Wi-Fi connection to cellular data, so it belongs in an investigation of unexplained use.

Use the phone’s list to rank apps and find likely causes. Use the carrier’s account or app for the authoritative current-period amount, particularly when you are close to a data cap.

Find the biggest users on an iPhone

Open the cellular-data report

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular. In some regional versions, the label is Mobile Data.
  3. Scroll down to the section listing apps. Each entry has a cellular-data total for the period represented by the page.
  4. Read the values and identify the largest entries. The list is the starting point for deciding which apps deserve investigation; it is not a prediction based on an app’s category.

Apple’s support guidance describes this page as the place to see which apps use cellular data. The switch beside an app controls whether that app may use cellular service. The app remains available over Wi-Fi when cellular access is turned off.

Check the period before comparing apps

Scroll to the bottom of the Cellular page and note the Current Period context and the Reset Statistics option. The current period begins when the statistics were last reset, not necessarily when your carrier plan renewed. If you want a clean comparison, reset the statistics at the start of a carrier billing period and record that date. Resetting removes the device’s accumulated counters; it does not erase the carrier’s records or change your plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not reset immediately if you are still diagnosing an unexplained spike and need the existing history. Instead, capture a screenshot or write down the top entries first.

Restrict a specific app

  1. In Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data), find the app.
  2. Turn off its cellular-data switch.
  3. Leave the switch off when you want that app to operate only over Wi-Fi, or turn it back on when cellular access is needed.

Turning the switch off prevents that app from using cellular data, but it may delay uploads, synchronization, notifications, or other actions until the phone connects to Wi-Fi. Apply the restriction to an app whose behavior you understand rather than disabling services required for time-sensitive work.

Inspect System Services

Tap System Services in the Cellular settings to see cellular use attributed to iPhone system functions. These entries help explain a total that the individual app list does not. Apple does not provide individual off switches for services from this list, so use it for diagnosis rather than as a set of controls.

System Services are separate from app entries. If a system category is responsible for an unexpected amount, check recent device changes, roaming status, and the carrier’s records before deleting apps or repeatedly resetting statistics.

Account for Dual SIM and roaming views

On an iPhone with Dual SIM, the cellular usage shown is for the cellular-data number selected in settings. Confirm that you are viewing the line you intended before comparing the values with a plan or a second line. If the page exposes a roaming statistic, treat it as a separate diagnostic figure: roaming use can be subject to different allowances and charges than domestic use.

Check Wi-Fi Assist when cellular use seems inexplicable

Apple identifies Wi-Fi Assist as a possible reason for higher cellular consumption. When it is enabled, the phone can use cellular data if Wi-Fi connectivity is poor. Review the Wi-Fi Assist setting while investigating a total that does not match your expectations, especially if the largest app entries do not explain the difference. Disabling it can keep a marginal Wi-Fi connection from falling back to cellular, but the trade-off is that an app may stop loading until Wi-Fi improves or cellular access is deliberately enabled.

Locate the per-app report

Android’s exact route depends on the manufacturer, Android release, and the device’s settings app. There is no single menu path that appears on every model. Start with this method:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Use the Settings search field and enter data usage, mobile data, or app data usage.
  3. Open the result that shows mobile-data usage or a list of apps.
  4. Choose the relevant SIM or mobile-data period if the device offers more than one option.
  5. Review the app list and note the largest values.

On many phones, the report is reached through a network or connections section and then App data usage, but the wording and location vary. If a label in this article is absent, use the three search terms above rather than assuming the phone is not tracking usage.

Separate foreground and background activity

Many Android reports distinguish data used while an app is open (foreground) from data used while it runs in the background. A high foreground value points to activity during active use. A high background value indicates synchronization, media downloads, backups, notifications, or another task that ran while you were not looking at the app. The exact breakdown is device-dependent, so use the categories your phone exposes instead of treating them as universal measurements.

Use Data Saver for a broad reduction

Android’s consumer guidance describes Data Saver as a way to optimize mobile-data use. Turn it on from the network or data-usage settings when you want a general reduction in background traffic. Data Saver is not a replacement for checking the app list: it changes behavior across apps, while the report tells you which apps already consumed data.

Some apps can be allowed unrestricted background data while Data Saver is active. Keep that exception limited to services that genuinely need timely background access, because every exception weakens the overall reduction.

Restrict background data for one app

  1. Open the per-app entry from the mobile-data report.
  2. Look for a control such as Background data, Allow background data usage, or a similarly named switch.
  3. Turn the control off when you want the app to use mobile data only while you are actively using it, if your device provides that option.
  4. Test the app over Wi-Fi and then over cellular to confirm which functions were affected.

Android Open Source Project documentation describes per-app background-data controls, and Pixel Help documents the same type of control on Pixel devices. Labels and the placement of the control differ elsewhere. Restricting background data can delay messages, synchronization, cloud uploads, or other work; some system apps need background access to function correctly.

Turn a usage list into a reliable diagnosis

1. Establish one comparison period

Write down the start and end dates represented by the phone’s counters. On iPhone, reset at the beginning of the carrier cycle if you want the next report to align. On Android, use the available date-range or cycle setting. Do not compare an iPhone counter covering six weeks with a carrier total covering one month and conclude that the phone is wrong.

2. Rank the entries by their actual values

Identify the largest numbers in the app list, then open those apps’ own settings or usage details. A large number can reflect intentional activity, background work, or a period that started earlier than you remembered. The ranking is more useful than a generic list of “high-data” app types because it reflects your device and your dates.

3. Distinguish app use from system use

On iPhone, add the System Services view to your investigation. On Android, inspect whether the report separates app, system, hotspot, or other categories. If system activity is substantial, changing one app’s switch will not account for the full total.

4. Check foreground and background details

Where Android exposes both values, a background-heavy app is a candidate for a background restriction or Data Saver exception review. A foreground-heavy app may simply reflect deliberate use; reducing it requires changing how or where you use the app rather than only blocking background traffic. iPhone’s app list does not present the same universal foreground/background split, so use the available app total and related settings.

5. Verify with the carrier

Apple advises confirming current-period cellular usage with the carrier for the most accurate figure. This is especially important when the phone and carrier totals disagree, when the plan is shared across lines, or when roaming is involved. Use the carrier’s billing-period total to make decisions about a cap, and use the phone’s app list to locate likely contributors.

Reduce mobile-data use without breaking important functions

On iPhone

  • Turn off cellular access for apps that do not need to work away from Wi-Fi.
  • Leave cellular access on for apps that must update or upload while you are mobile, and monitor them during the next defined period.
  • Review System Services when app totals do not explain the increase.
  • Check Wi-Fi Assist if weak Wi-Fi could be causing cellular fallback.
  • Reset Statistics only after recording the old period and choosing a new start date.

On Android

  • Enable Data Saver when you want a broad reduction in background traffic.
  • Restrict background data for individual high-usage apps where the device offers that control.
  • Review unrestricted-data exceptions so only necessary services bypass Data Saver.
  • Test notifications and synchronization after a restriction; restore background access if a required function stops updating.
  • Recheck the per-app report after a complete, clearly dated period rather than judging a change from a few minutes of use.

Common discrepancies and how to troubleshoot them

The phone total is higher than the carrier total

First compare dates and reset history. The phone may include days outside the carrier cycle, or it may be displaying a different SIM on a Dual SIM iPhone. Check whether the phone’s list includes roaming, hotspot, or system categories that your carrier presents separately. Confirm the current-period number in the carrier account before changing settings.

The carrier total is higher than the app list

Check for another line in a shared plan, tethering or hotspot traffic, roaming, and a carrier cycle that began before the phone’s current statistics period. On iPhone, review System Services and Wi-Fi Assist. On Android, inspect every SIM and the complete mobile-data report your model provides. A per-app list is not necessarily a complete copy of the carrier’s accounting view.

An app shows data even though you rarely opened it

Look for background usage. Android may show it directly; on iPhone, compare the app’s total with the timing of the spike and consider whether cellular access should be disabled. Background restrictions can delay updates, so test the app after changing the setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The expected Android menu is missing

Use Settings search with data usage, mobile data, or app data usage. Manufacturer software can rename or relocate the report, and instructions for one Android model may not match another. Open the result that lists application-level mobile usage rather than a general Wi-Fi page.

Notifications stop after limiting an app

Restore the app’s cellular switch on iPhone or its background-data permission on Android, then decide whether a narrower control is available. Some system and communication functions depend on background access. A reduction is useful only if it does not prevent a service you need from updating.

A repeatable monthly check

  1. On the first day of the carrier billing period, record the carrier’s starting total.
  2. Reset iPhone statistics, or set the Android usage cycle to the same dates when the device supports that option.
  3. At mid-cycle, record the largest app entries and whether Android identifies foreground or background activity.
  4. Apply one targeted restriction at a time so you can tell which change affected usage or notifications.
  5. At the end of the period, compare the phone’s ranking with the carrier’s total and record any system, roaming, or Wi-Fi Assist explanation.
  6. Keep the settings that reduce unnecessary traffic while restoring access for apps whose timely background operation matters.

This process gives you a comparable history instead of a one-time snapshot. It also keeps the phone’s diagnostic detail and the carrier’s billing figure in their proper roles: the device identifies likely app causes, while the carrier confirms the amount counted against the plan.
