ChromeOS does not provide a built-in report that ranks apps by battery watt-hours. You can still identify likely causes: use ChromeOS Task Manager (Search+Esc) to find tabs or extensions with sustained CPU activity, then use the Diagnostics app to inspect overall CPU load, battery health, cycle count, electrical current, and discharge performance. Finally, review Settings > System preferences > Power for Battery Saver, idle, lid-close, and sleep behavior.
Treat CPU activity as a lead rather than proof of battery consumption. Change one app or setting at a time, repeat a similar workload, and separate software-related drain from a charging-path or battery fault.
What ChromeOS can—and cannot—tell you about battery drain
The official ChromeOS tools expose two different kinds of evidence. Task Manager shows resource use by browser tabs and extensions, while Diagnostics shows system CPU activity and battery condition. Neither Google Chromebook Help nor ChromiumOS documentation describes these screens as a direct per-app battery meter. A tab using 40% of CPU is a strong reason to investigate, but it is not a measurement of that tab’s share of battery power.

The workflow below narrows the possibilities without assigning a battery percentage that ChromeOS does not actually measure.

| ChromeOS Task Manager | Press Search+Esc | Usage for tabs and extensions | Find browser processes that remain busy while you are otherwise idle; close a tab or disable an extension temporarily. |
| Diagnostics | Launcher search for Diagnostics, or Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics | CPU graph; battery health, cycle count, electrical current, and a discharge test | Check whether the whole system is busy and whether the battery or charging path behaves abnormally. |
| Power settings | Settings > System preferences > Power | Battery Saver, brightness and backlight behavior, idle controls, and lid-close sleep behavior | Remove avoidable power use and confirm that the Chromebook is allowed to sleep when you expect it to. |
Step 1: Use Task Manager to identify busy tabs and extensions
Open Task Manager
- Press the Search key and Esc together. Search is the key with the launcher icon; on some keyboards it is labeled with a magnifying glass.
- Read the rows for open tabs, extensions, and browser processes. Focus on activity that stays high for several minutes while you are not intentionally running a demanding task.
- Write down the name of a possible culprit before changing anything. A note about the tab, extension, time unplugged, brightness, and workload makes the later comparison more meaningful.
ChromiumOS documentation describes Task Manager as a way to see usage of tabs and extensions. Use it to find candidates, not to produce a battery ranking. A video call, game, large spreadsheet, or web application can legitimately use CPU while it is active. The useful signal is sustained activity that continues after the task should have become idle.
Test a suspected tab
- Save any work in the suspected tab.
- Close that tab, or sign out of the web service if closing it would lose a session.
- Observe the Chromebook for a comparable period under the same general workload. Keep brightness and connected accessories as similar as practical.
- If the symptom improves, reopen the service and test it again. A repeatable change makes the tab a plausible contributor, but still does not establish a wattage figure.
Test an extension safely
For an extension, open Chrome’s Extensions management page, switch off only the suspected extension, and repeat the same observation. Disable one extension at a time so that you know which change affected the result. If the extension is required for work or school, ask the administrator before removing it permanently. Re-enable it if the battery behavior does not change.
If Task Manager does not reveal an obvious browser process, do not conclude that no software is involved. The load may be intermittent, outside the browser, or too small to stand out in the list. Move to Diagnostics to see whether overall CPU activity remains elevated.

Open Diagnostics and confirm availability
- Open the launcher and search for Diagnostics, or go to Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics.
- The Diagnostics app is available on ChromeOS version 90 and later, according to Google Chromebook Help.
- To check your version, open Settings > About ChromeOS. The same page provides the update controls described later in this guide.
Google Chromebook Help describes Diagnostics as a way to check hardware and connection problems involving the battery, CPU, memory, or Wi-Fi. Its CPU graph is useful for confirming that the system is busy, but Google does not describe the graph as a per-application energy meter.

Read the CPU graph
Watch the graph while the Chromebook is doing very little. If CPU use stays elevated, return to Task Manager and look for a tab or extension that corresponds with the activity. If the graph rises only when you perform a known task, that activity may be normal. CPU usage is a clue to investigate, not proof that one app is responsible for a specific amount of battery drain.
Inspect battery health, cycle count, and electrical current
In the Battery section, review the reported battery health, cycle count, and electrical current. These values describe the battery and its present electrical behavior; they do not identify which app consumed the charge. Record them with the date and whether the charger is connected so that a later check has context.
Run the discharge test when appropriate
Diagnostics can run a discharge test that measures charge and discharge rates over a fixed period. Start it when the Chromebook is safely able to remain on battery and you can leave it undisturbed for the test. A very low charge or discharge rate can point to a battery or charging-port problem, according to Google’s troubleshooting guidance. It is not evidence that a particular browser tab is draining the battery.
Do not apply a universal replacement threshold based on one reading. Battery behavior varies by model and condition, and the official guidance does not establish a single health percentage at which every Chromebook battery should be replaced. If the results look abnormal, continue with the charging-path checks below and contact the Chromebook manufacturer if the problem persists.

Step 3: Check the charger and charging path before blaming an app
Verify the simple causes
- Confirm the charger is connected firmly at the Chromebook and at the wall outlet.
- Try the outlet with another device or verify that its switch is on.
- Inspect both ends of the cable for a loose connection.
If the Chromebook will not charge, Google recommends unplugging the charger from both the Chromebook and the wall, reconnecting it to the Chromebook first and then to the wall, and leaving it connected for at least 30 minutes. If it still will not charge after these checks, contact the Chromebook manufacturer. A charging-port or battery fault can make runtime appear poor even when Task Manager shows little activity.
A single symptom is not enough to diagnose a defective battery. Compare the Diagnostics readings, charging behavior, and observed runtime. If CPU activity is low, the charger is known-good, and runtime remains unusually short, the available guidance does not establish a specific cause; manufacturer support is the appropriate escalation.
Step 4: Review Power settings that can create avoidable drain
Use Battery Saver deliberately
- Open Settings > System preferences > Power.
- Turn on Battery Saver when you need to extend time away from an outlet.
- Review the controls it applies before deciding whether the trade-offs suit your work.
Google says Battery Saver can lower display brightness, turn off the keyboard backlight, enable Chrome Energy Saver, enable Android Battery Saver when apps are used, and throttle the CPU. These actions reduce demand but can change screen visibility, keyboard lighting, processor responsiveness, or Android-app behavior. Choose a brightness level that remains comfortable rather than assuming the lowest setting is always practical.
Check idle and sleep behavior
On the Power page, review what happens when the Chromebook is inactive. A device configured to stay awake on battery can continue running a tab, synchronization task, or Android app after you stop using it. Closing the lid normally puts a Chromebook to sleep, but ChromeOS also provides a setting that disables sleep when the lid is closed. If that option is enabled, the Chromebook may continue consuming power in a bag or on a desk with the lid down.

These settings explain behavior patterns, not a guaranteed number of hours recovered. The available Google guidance does not quantify the effect for a particular Chromebook, workload, or brightness level. The practical test is to change one control, use the Chromebook under a similar workload, and compare the result.
Step 5: Update ChromeOS, then retest under comparable conditions
- Open Settings > About ChromeOS and review the installed version.
- Choose Check for updates if that option is available.
- Allow ChromeOS to download an update while connected to the internet, then restart when prompted to complete installation.
- Repeat the same battery observation you made before the update: similar tabs, brightness, accessories, and time unplugged.
Chromebooks automatically check for and download updates when connected to the internet. An update can change system behavior, but Google’s instructions do not promise that installing one will fix battery drain. Treat the update as a controlled troubleshooting step rather than proof of a particular cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to run a useful one-change-at-a-time comparison
Battery tests become misleading when several variables change together. Use this simple record for each trial:
- ChromeOS version and whether the charger was connected before starting.
- Tabs and extensions that were open.
- Screen brightness, keyboard-backlight state, Bluetooth or USB accessories, and whether Android apps were running.
- Starting charge level, elapsed time unplugged, and the activity performed.
- The single change you made, such as closing one tab, disabling one extension, or enabling Battery Saver.
Compare trials that have similar workloads. A ten-minute video call is not a fair baseline for an hour of reading static pages, and a discharge test is not interchangeable with casual browsing. You are looking for a repeatable direction—less CPU activity, slower charge loss, or a changed sleep behavior—not a laboratory-grade battery percentage for an individual app.

Charging optimization: why the battery may stop below 100%
Supported Chromebooks may include charging optimization features that intentionally avoid a full charge. Google describes Optimized charging as able to use Adaptive charging, which can keep the battery around 80%, or Charge limit, which can cap the maximum at 80%.
This behavior explains why the charge indicator may remain below 100% even when the charger is connected. It does not identify an app consuming power and should not be treated as evidence of software drain. Check the charging-optimization control and the Diagnostics battery readings before changing your conclusions about runtime.
Managed Chromebooks and settings you cannot change
Work- and school-managed Chromebooks can have administrator-controlled power settings. An organization may restrict Battery Saver, idle behavior, lid-close actions, or update controls. If a setting is unavailable, locked, or immediately reverts, contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the policy. You can still use the information that the device exposes in Task Manager and Diagnostics, subject to the organization’s configuration.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling CPU percentage battery percentage: CPU load is only an investigative signal.
- Blaming a below-100% charge on an app: Adaptive charging or an 80% Charge limit can be intentional.
- Changing many settings at once: You lose the ability to tell which change mattered.
- Using one short observation as a diagnosis: Repeat the comparison under similar conditions.
- Replacing a battery from a generic cutoff: The official guidance does not define one universal replacement threshold.
- Ignoring the charging path: A loose connection, outlet problem, port issue, or failing battery can mimic app-related drain.
- Assuming an update guarantees a fix: Update, restart, and retest, but keep the conclusion tied to what you observe.
When to contact support
Escalate to the Chromebook manufacturer when the charger and outlet have been checked, the cable has been reconnected in the recommended order, the device has been left charging for at least 30 minutes, and the charging or discharge problem continues. Include the Chromebook model, ChromeOS version, Diagnostics battery health, cycle count, electrical-current reading, discharge-test result, and a description of the workload. That information gives support a clearer starting point than a general statement that an app is draining the battery.
Google Chromebook Help summarizes the purpose of Diagnostics this way: “You can use the Diagnostics app to check for hardware and connection problems on your Chromebook, like issues with the battery, CPU, memory or Wi-Fi.” Use that scope when interpreting the results: Diagnostics can help separate system activity and hardware symptoms, while it does not provide the per-app battery-use ranking many users expect.
