To find a movie’s real filming locations, start with the official film commission or tourism website for the likely destination. Search its filming-location directory, movie map, or film trail for the production, compare listed sites with landmarks in the scene, then confirm access with the property or destination authority before visiting. A film’s fictional setting and its filming location may be different places.
Start with an official location directory or map
Film commissions and tourism offices sometimes publish searchable records of productions filmed in their areas. The Czech Film Commission, for example, groups location listings into categories such as historical sites, towns, nature, and transport infrastructure. Its directory also provides contact guidance for finding location managers, scouts, or production companies: Czech Film Commission locations.
Destination resources take different forms. FiHeTo describes customized interactive film-location maps for cities, regions, and countries, with projects for Barcelona and Jamaica: FiHeTo film tourism. Madrid’s regional government describes a georeferenced catalogue of audiovisual productions shot in the region and movie maps for exploring the city’s screen heritage: Madrid en el cine. New Jersey’s tourism agency announced film trails connecting screen productions with filming locations and nearby attractions on September 30, 2026; check the official site for current trail details: Visit New Jersey film trails announcement.
Search the official site for the film title, and try terms such as “filming locations,” “movie map,” or “film trail.” If you do not know the destination, use production notes or recognizable landmarks to identify likely places first. Do not assume that a story’s setting tells you where the crew filmed.

Check whether a listed place matches the scene
Compare more than a general resemblance. Look for stable details such as street layout, terrain, distinctive architecture, or a recognizable landmark. Account for set dressing, editing, and digital alteration: a tourism study notes that digitally altered locations may be difficult for visitors to recognize. A visual match by itself is not conclusive evidence that a scene was filmed at that spot.
When the exact location matters, cross-check the official listing against another credible location record. Film commissions may also be able to direct you to people or organizations with production-location knowledge.

Confirm access before planning a visit
Finding a place and being allowed to visit it are separate questions. A location’s appearance on a map or film trail does not establish that it is open to the public. Before travelling, confirm the address and current visitor rules with the property owner or responsible destination authority.

- Verify opening hours, closures, and any tour or booking requirements.
- Follow posted restrictions; do not enter private property or closed areas to recreate a scene.
Access, hours, tours, and map contents can change. Use current information from the authority responsible for the site rather than relying on an older location listing.

Choose the most useful resource for your trip
If a destination has several guides, compare what each one actually helps you do:
- Coverage: Does it cover the city, region, or country you plan to visit?
- Production detail: Does an entry name the film or show, or merely mark a notable place?
- Navigation: Is there an interactive map, a searchable catalogue, or a route that links several stops?
- Authority and freshness: Is the information from an official destination body, and does it appear current?
- Visitor information: Does it explain access, or will you need to check that separately with the site?
A catalogue can help identify a filming place without providing a practical itinerary. A trail may make it easier to connect locations, but still may not settle current access. Choose the resource that fits your research or travel need, then verify any missing details with the relevant authority.
