To free up space on a Pixel, first check Settings > Storage, then remove files you no longer need from the category taking up space. The safest wins are usually backed-up photos and videos, offline downloads, unused apps, and files you can copy to a computer. There is no evidence that these steps will recover 10 GB on every phone: that number is a personal claim, not a typical result.
Find what is using storage on your Pixel
Open Settings > Storage and review the categories before deleting anything. Tap a category to inspect its contents. For suggested cleanup, choose Free up space; if a category does not show files there, use Browse. Menu labels can vary by Android version, and some of Google’s cleanup instructions apply only to Android 11 and later.
Storage holds data such as photos and music; memory is where programs run. If your goal is to reclaim phone space, focus on storage categories rather than trying to manage memory.
Choose a cleanup that fits the data
Consider whether the item is backed up, whether you can restore it, and whether you still need it offline. Google’s instructions do not establish typical gigabyte savings for any one method, so inspect the category and decide based on what is actually on your phone.

Remove backed-up photos and videos
Before removing local photo or video copies, confirm that backup has completed. Smart Storage can automatically clear backed-up photos and videos when device storage is almost full. You can also remove local copies manually. Deleting a local copy is not the same as deleting the backed-up item from your account; Google says backed-up copies can be found in Photos when the device is online. Check the deletion option carefully so you do not remove the account copy you meant to keep.
Delete offline media and downloads
Downloaded films, music, and other offline media are managed in the app that downloaded them. Remove items there if you no longer need offline access. For ordinary files, review Downloads and delete only what you recognize and no longer need.

Uninstall apps you no longer use
Uninstall apps that are no longer useful. Android’s unused-app feature can remove temporary files, revoke permissions, pause background activity, and stop notifications for apps unused for a long time. To review its list, open the device’s Unused apps section. To exempt an app, turn off Pause app activity if unused for that app.

Clearing cache removes temporary data; the app may take longer to open the next time while it rebuilds that data. Clear storage is different: it permanently deletes the app’s data. Try deleting data from inside the app first, and avoid clearing storage as a general cleanup shortcut.

Copy files to a computer
For files you want to keep but do not need on the phone, connect the Pixel to a computer over USB, copy the files and folders, verify the copies, and then delete the phone copies. You need available computer space and a working USB data connection; a compatible USB-C data cable is only necessary if you do not already have a suitable one.
Know what the 10% warning means
Google Pixel Help says, “Your phone can have issues when less than 10% of storage is available.” That is a warning about the share of phone storage remaining, not a promise that a cleanup will recover 10 GB. The amount needed to reach a more comfortable free-space level depends on your phone’s capacity and current use.

Phone storage and Google Account storage are separate
Freeing local space on the Pixel and freeing space in a Google Account are different tasks. Google says each Google Account comes with up to 15 GB of account storage, subject to its account-storage terms. Buying more account storage or cleaning up that account does not, by itself, remove files stored locally on the phone. Likewise, deleting a local copy of a backed-up photo is a phone cleanup action; make sure the backup is complete before doing it.
