Find topics by starting with a specific viewer problem or curiosity, turn it into a promise you can visibly fulfill, and use YouTube’s retention report to see where that promise held or failed. A clear title and thumbnail should lead to an opening that identifies the subject and demonstrates the payoff quickly; later, compare the retention curve with the actual footage before deciding what to change.
What makes a video topic worth clicking
A strong topic answers a recognizable question or creates a specific curiosity for a defined audience. “Photography tips” is a subject; “How to get sharp night photos without a tripod” is a viewer problem with a clear outcome. The narrower version helps you decide what belongs in the video, what the title should promise, and what evidence the opening must show.
Write the idea as a one-sentence promise containing three elements:
- Audience: who has the problem or curiosity.
- Outcome: what they will learn, see, compare or accomplish.
- Immediate relevance: why solving it now matters to that viewer.
For example: “For new home-network owners, I will show which settings stop common Wi-Fi dropouts and verify each change on screen.” The wording is practical, but it also sets a boundary. If the video cannot demonstrate or resolve the promise, change the angle before recording.

How do I find video ideas people will watch?
Collect questions from real conversations
Keep a running list of recurring questions from comments, community discussions, search suggestions and conversations with the audience you intend to serve. Capture the question in the viewer’s words rather than translating it immediately into industry language. “Why does my laptop fan run after I close the lid?” is more useful than “power-management optimization” because it reveals the symptom and the urgency.
Group similar questions, then choose one that can be answered in a single coherent video. A list of loosely related questions usually produces a weak promise and a wandering structure. If several questions deserve treatment, make a series in which each episode has its own outcome.
Convert a subject into a specific angle
A broad subject is not yet an idea. Add a point of view, test, comparison, transformation, troubleshooting path or decision to make the payoff visible. Useful angle patterns include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Demonstration: show a process from problem to result.
- Comparison: evaluate two options for one defined use case.
- Test: set a condition, measure an outcome and explain the limits.
- Transformation: improve a starting state and document the meaningful changes.
- Diagnosis: identify likely causes, then verify them in a sensible order.
- Decision guide: explain which choice fits which user, budget or constraint.
Select the angle that can be demonstrated or resolved with the material you actually have. An inflated premise may win an initial click but creates an expectation the opening and body cannot satisfy.
Rank ideas by evidence and usefulness
Before scripting, score each candidate informally against four questions:
- Can I state the viewer’s problem in one sentence?
- Can I show meaningful evidence or a concrete result?
- Will the audience know what they will gain before clicking?
- Can the video deliver that gain without padding?
Prefer ideas with a clear “before” state, a visible “after” state or a decision the viewer can make. Demand is never guaranteed by a topic format; the purpose of this screen is to make the promise testable and honest.
Build the promise into the title, thumbnail and hook
The title and thumbnail create an expectation before a viewer hears a word. The opening should confirm the subject quickly and provide evidence that the click was well placed. YouTube’s official guidance recommends revising title or thumbnail accuracy and experimenting with the first 30 seconds when the intro measure is weak.
Write one promise, expressed three ways
Draft the promise first, then adapt it to each surface:

- Title: state the problem or outcome in the fewest precise words.
- Thumbnail: show the contrast, object, result or decision that makes the promise easy to grasp visually.
- Opening: identify what is being solved and show the first proof, step or consequence.
Do not let the thumbnail imply a result the video never reaches. A dramatic image can attract attention, but a mismatch makes the opening feel like a delay or bait-and-switch.
What should I say in the first 30 seconds?
State the subject, name the viewer’s desired outcome and establish why your evidence is credible or useful. Then begin the demonstration, comparison or diagnosis. A concise opening can follow this sequence:
- Identify: “This is why your exported video looks blurry.”
- Promise: “We’ll fix the setting and verify the result with the same clip.”
- Proof or orientation: show the problem, the test setup or the first decisive step.
Avoid a long greeting, biography, channel history or unrelated setup before the promised subject appears. Context belongs where it helps the next decision. If safety, legal or technical prerequisites are essential, state them briefly and proceed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYouTube defines the intro measure as “the percentage of your audience still watched your video after the first 30 seconds.” It is a diagnostic for this video, not a universal pass/fail score. A lower result can reflect an inaccurate promise, a slow start, an audience mismatch or a format that needs more orientation; inspect the footage before choosing a cause.
Give the video a progression viewers can follow
Once the opening earns attention, organize the body so every section answers a question, advances a demonstration or adds context needed for the next choice. A practical outline is:
- Problem and constraints: define the starting condition and who the advice applies to.
- Method or options: present the steps, test conditions or alternatives.
- Evidence: show the result, trade-off or failure mode rather than merely asserting it.
- Decision: explain which option fits which viewer or situation.
- Next action: tell viewers what to try, verify or measure.
Use transitions that explain why the next part matters: “That setting fixes the symptom, but it also changes battery life, so we’ll check the trade-off next.” Such signposts reduce cognitive load without adding empty narration.
Match duration to the work
There is no source-backed ideal duration target. Make the video as long as necessary to fulfill the promise and no longer. Remove repeated examples, decorative intros and tangents that postpone the evidence. A complex repair may need more time than a single setting change; the same retention standard should not be imposed on both.

Interpret the intro and curve together
The intro measure summarizes the share still watching at 30 seconds. The curve then shows how viewing changed through the rest of the video. Compare videos of similar length and format; raw percentages from unlike videos can mislead. A short tutorial, a long review and a live recording create different opportunities for skipping and rewatching.
Investigate a spike before celebrating it
A spike can indicate that viewers replayed a useful passage or shared it. It can also mean the passage was unclear and people scrubbed backward to understand it. Watch the exact segment, read relevant comments and check whether the moment contains a key definition, visual detail or confusing edit. Only then decide whether to move that information earlier, clarify it or develop it into a separate video.
Investigate a dip before rewriting the format
A dip may mean viewers skipped a section or left the video. Look for a delayed payoff, a topic change, repetitive explanation, technical problem or title-thumbnail mismatch at that timestamp. Compare similar uploads before concluding that the entire format is at fault. One curve shows what happened in one audience and one video; it does not identify a single universal cause.
Use top moments as topic signals
If a compelling moment occurs late, ask whether the main video would improve if the key information appeared earlier. Also ask whether that moment deserves its own follow-up topic. A strong segment can reveal a more precise viewer question than the original broad premise, but confirm the pattern across comparable videos instead of reacting to one isolated peak.
A repeatable workflow from idea to next upload
1. Write the viewer question
Record the exact problem, curiosity or decision. Specify the audience and the condition under which the answer matters.
2. Draft the one-sentence promise
State what the viewer will learn or see and the evidence you will provide. Delete any outcome you cannot demonstrate.
3. Choose the visible payoff
Select a test, comparison, transformation, diagnosis or decision that makes success observable. List the proof you need before filming.

5. Script the first 30 seconds
Name the subject, promise the outcome and show the first evidence or decisive step. Remove greetings and background that do not serve those jobs.
6. Outline the progression
Arrange sections in the order a viewer needs them. Add a transition whenever the reason for moving on is not obvious.
7. Publish and allow reporting time
YouTube says audience-retention data typically takes 1–2 days to process. Wait for the report to populate before making a judgment from incomplete data.
8. Inspect the actual moments
At each notable spike or dip, watch the footage, read relevant feedback and note what the viewer had just been promised. Record several plausible explanations instead of assigning one cause immediately.
9. Compare like with like
Use videos with similar length, format and audience intent. Look for a pattern across multiple uploads.
10. Change one meaningful variable
For the next video, move a proven payoff earlier, tighten the promise, clarify a transition or choose a narrower topic. A focused change makes the resulting curve easier to interpret.
When key-moment highlights are missing
YouTube’s highlighted key moments are not detected for every video. The help guidance states that a video should be at least 60 seconds long and have at least 100 views for these highlights. These are reporting conditions, not creative targets: do not stretch a short answer or chase views merely to unlock a label. Use the available curve and your own review when highlights are absent.

What the Analytics API adds
Most creators can act from the Studio report, but the YouTube Analytics API exposes two related levels of evidence. audienceWatchRatio compares plays of a portion of a video with total views, while relativeRetentionPerformance compares performance with videos of similar length. The API also provides granular startedWatching and stoppedWatching values for segments.

These measures answer different questions. Ratio and relative-performance metrics help put a portion in context; starts and stops help locate when viewing began or ended within segments. Neither metric supplies the viewer’s motive. A dashboard can tell you where behavior changed, but the recording, comments and comparisons are needed to form a defensible explanation.
Compare topic or hook experiments fairly
When deciding whether one idea or opening worked better, record the following for each upload:
| Comparison axis | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Audience and question | Intended viewer and the exact problem or curiosity | Different audiences can produce different behavior even when the format is identical. |
| Promise and opening | Title/thumbnail expectation and what appears in the first 30 seconds | Shows whether the click is being confirmed promptly. |
| Length and format | Runtime, tutorial, comparison, livestream or other structure | Retention curves are more useful among comparable videos. |
| Curve shape | Intro measure, notable spikes, dips and the footage at those timestamps | Connects behavior with an actual editorial moment instead of a number alone. |
| Repeatability | Whether the same pattern appears across similar uploads | Reduces the risk of overreacting to one audience or one unusual event. |
Do not claim that a topic is inherently superior because its raw retention percentage is higher than an unrelated format. Treat the comparison as evidence about a particular audience, promise and execution.

The topic is broad but the title is specific
Symptom: the title promises a result, while the body surveys a whole subject. Fix: narrow the scope to one problem, decision or demonstration, or rewrite the title to match the broader educational goal.
The opening repeats the thumbnail
Symptom: the first seconds restate the click without adding proof. Fix: show the test setup, the before state, a surprising constraint or the first decisive action immediately after identifying the topic.
The best information arrives too late
Symptom: a later segment receives unusual attention while earlier sections lose viewers. Fix: test a structure that surfaces the key result earlier, then use the rest of the video to explain how or why it works.
A spike is treated as proof of success
Symptom: a creator copies a moment without checking whether viewers were replaying because it was useful or unclear. Fix: watch the passage, inspect comments and compare related videos before promoting that pattern.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A dip leads to a total format change
Symptom: one weak segment causes the creator to abandon a topic or style. Fix: identify the exact transition, promise mismatch or repetition at the timestamp and change that element first.
Reporting conditions are mistaken for performance goals
Symptom: a creator lengthens a video or pursues arbitrary view counts to obtain highlighted moments. Fix: make the shortest complete video and use the data that is available; the 60-second and 100-view conditions describe when highlights may appear, not what viewers prefer.
Pre-publish checklist
- The viewer problem or curiosity is written in the audience’s own language.
- The title and thumbnail make one accurate, specific promise.
- The first 30 seconds identify the subject and show evidence of the payoff.
- Every section answers a question, advances the demonstration or supplies necessary context.
- The runtime reflects the work required, with no deliberate delay before the result.
- Potential prerequisites, limitations and trade-offs are stated where they affect a decision.
- You know which moments you will inspect in the retention report after processing.
Use retention as feedback, not a guarantee
Audience retention tells you how viewers behaved in a particular video. It can reveal whether the opening matched the click, where attention changed and which moments deserve closer examination. It cannot guarantee that a future topic, hook or editing choice will perform the same way. Build a repeatable practice: make a precise promise, fulfill it visibly, inspect the actual curve after 1–2 days, and carry only well-supported patterns into the next idea.
