The most dependable way to track an unreleased game is to start with its official store page, then check the developer or publisher’s latest announcement. Wishlist the game where possible, add campaign updates for crowdfunded projects, and use release calendars only to discover titles or spot changes. Always confirm a date against the newest first-party statement before planning around it.
Use a source hierarchy instead of trusting one date
Unreleased games often appear in several places at once: a store page, a developer blog, a social account, a crowdfunding campaign and editorial calendars. Those sources do not have equal authority or precision. Rank them in this order:
- Developer or publisher announcement: the team that controls production can announce a delay, a change of scope or a platform-specific launch.
- Official platform store listing: the listing is the practical place to follow availability, see the current release wording and use built-in reminders.
- Crowdfunding campaign updates: for a funded project, backer posts and campaign FAQs can explain targets, milestones and revised schedules.
- Editorial calendars and third-party trackers: these are useful indexes, but they can retain an old date after the official page changes.
When sources disagree, compare three attributes: authority (who published it), recency (which statement is newest) and precision (an exact date is more specific than a year or a goal). Keep the wording used by the source rather than silently converting a target into a promise.
Start with the game’s official store page
Find the current release wording
Search the platform store for the exact game title and developer name. On Steam, an unreleased title can have a Coming Soon page with announcements and artwork. The page may show a calendar date, a broad window or no date beyond “Coming Soon.” Steamworks documents how these pages and release-date settings work in its Coming Soon guidance.

Read the date area and the most recent developer post together. A prominent date can be left over from an earlier plan, while a newer announcement may narrow, move or remove it. Look for an update timestamp and for language such as “delayed,” “target,” “aiming for” or “we will announce a date later.”
Wishlist for a release notification
Steam says it emails people who have wishlisted a game when the developer releases it. That makes a wishlist a useful reminder even when the schedule is uncertain. It is not a guarantee that the game will launch on the date you saw: the notification arrives when the release actually occurs.
Wishlist the title from its store page, then revisit the page after major showcases, demos, publisher announcements or visible delays. If the game is listed on more than one storefront, repeat this process on each one because a platform page can carry its own availability information.
Understand what each kind of date means
Steamworks’ release-date documentation explains that developers can use a calendar date or a less precise timeframe. The wording is a signal about certainty, not a promise that every project will meet the earliest estimate.

Do not turn “late 2027,” “this year” or “we are aiming for January” into a firm launch day. Those phrases describe a project’s current plan at the time they were written. A developer announcement about a January goal, for example, noted that the plan could depend on publisher support; it is evidence of a conditional target, not a universal scheduling rule.
Follow the developer and publisher’s own announcements
Find the news feed
Use the links on the store page to reach the named developer or publisher site, blog, mailing list and official social accounts. Prefer a channel that shows publication dates and keeps older posts available. For Steam games, the store’s community announcements can contain roadmap entries, development updates and date changes.

Read the newest relevant post in full. A headline may repeat an old date while the body explains a delay, an early-access phase or a staggered launch. Search the page for terms such as “release,” “launch,” “delay,” “window,” “platform,” “early access” and “roadmap.”
Check whether a newer post supersedes an older one
Keep the date of every statement you rely on. If a 2025 post says “2026” and a later 2026 post says the team still cannot provide an exact date, the later statement controls the current expectation. A Steam news update for Magin: The Rat Project Stories, for example, described a 2026 goal while saying an exact date was not yet available. Treat that as a project-specific status, not evidence that every 2026 game lacks a day-and-month date.
When a post says “we’ll share more soon,” do not infer that a launch is imminent. Set a reminder to check again after the next milestone instead.
Check crowdfunding updates for schedule changes
For a crowdfunded game, the campaign page is a separate first-party record. Read the creator’s updates, FAQ and reward-delivery notes, not just the original campaign pitch. Campaign FAQs may state a target and explain how often backers should expect updates.
Capture the exact scope of a campaign date: it may refer to a playable build, early access, a digital reward, a console version or the full 1.0 release. Those milestones are not interchangeable. If a creator changes the plan, use the newest dated update and retain the earlier target only as history.
The Hollow Bequest campaign FAQ illustrates why this distinction matters: a campaign target and its update cadence are useful scheduling information, but they remain the project team’s stated plan rather than an independently guaranteed date.

Use calendars and trackers for discovery, not confirmation
Editorial roundups can help you discover games you did not know about and organize a long list by month or year. For example, GamesRadar’s upcoming PC games calendar groups announced PC releases and projects still in development.
After finding a title in a roundup, open the official store page and the latest developer announcement. If the roundup and the first-party source differ, publish or plan from the first-party wording and note the date of that statement. A tracker can be excellent at collecting names while still being stale about an individual window.
Community discussions often mention services such as SteamDB when asking where to find upcoming indie dates. That wording shows what readers look for, but a mention in a discussion does not establish that any particular tracker is accurate. Treat every service outside the developer, publisher or store as a lead until you verify it.

- Find the official listing. Search the game on the relevant store and confirm the developer name, platform and current release wording.
- Follow or wishlist it. Use the store’s follow or wishlist control; on Steam, the wishlist can trigger an email when the game releases.
- Open the official news channel. Bookmark the developer or publisher feed and note its most recent schedule-related post.
- Add campaign updates when applicable. Check the crowdfunding FAQ and update history for targets, milestone definitions and the promised update cadence.
- Record the source language. Write “14 March 2027,” “Q3 2027,” “2027,” “targeting January” or “Coming Soon” exactly as stated, along with the publication date.
- Recheck after major events. Revisit the listing after a showcase, demo, publisher announcement, roadmap milestone or visible delay.
- Confirm before acting. Before taking time off, pre-ordering, upgrading hardware or promising a multiplayer session, open the latest official source again.
A simple record prevents old calendar entries from becoming false certainty:

When the store and an announcement disagree
Use the newest dated statement from the developer or publisher, then check whether the store page has been updated since that statement. A store date that is older than a delay announcement should be treated as stale until corrected. If the announcement is less precise than the store date, preserve the uncertainty instead of choosing the more optimistic figure.
When two official posts disagree
Compare publication times and the milestone each post describes. A post about early access may precede a separate 1.0 launch, and a PC date may precede a console date. The later post controls only the platform or edition it discusses.

When a calendar is newer than the official page
Use the calendar as a prompt to investigate. It may have incorporated a private press briefing, an error or an unannounced change; without a public first-party confirmation, it is not a dependable launch date. Record the official page’s wording and keep watching for confirmation.
Track platforms and editions separately
Do not assume that a PC date applies to consoles, a demo, early access or a complete 1.0 release. Create a separate entry for each platform and milestone when the announcement distinguishes them. Verify each platform’s own store listing and developer statement.
The available Steam guidance explains Steam’s Coming Soon pages, wishlists and date settings. It does not establish the current tracking features or notification behavior of console storefronts, so check those platforms directly rather than promising an equivalent alert.

- Relying on a search-result snippet: snippets can be truncated or outdated. Open the page and read its timestamp.
- Treating a target as a commitment: label goals and estimates as targets, especially when the announcement names dependencies such as publisher support.
- Copying an old roundup date: use the roundup to discover the game, then replace its date with the newest official wording.
- Mixing milestones: distinguish demo, beta, early access, full release and console launch in your notes.
- Ignoring regional or platform scope: record the region, edition and platform attached to the date whenever the source specifies them.
- Checking only once: a Coming Soon page can remain unchanged while development continues. Keep the wishlist active and revisit the official feed after major announcements.
How to judge whether an update is genuinely new
Look for a publication date, a changed release window, a new milestone or an explicit statement that an earlier plan has been revised. Artwork changes and routine development screenshots may not alter the schedule. Conversely, a short post saying the team cannot yet give an exact date is a meaningful update because it narrows what can responsibly be claimed.
For each entry in your tracker, preserve the previous wording in an archive and mark the newest statement as current. This lets you see whether a project has moved from a year to a quarter, slipped from a quarter to “to be announced,” or split its launch by platform.

A specific calendar date is the clearest public signal, but it remains subject to change until the game releases. A season, quarter or year is a planning window. “Target,” “goal” and similar terms describe intent. “Coming Soon” confirms an announced listing without supplying a usable date.

The dependable habit is therefore simple: discover games through calendars and community discussion, verify them on the official store and developer channels, record the source’s exact wording, and recheck after meaningful announcements. That approach gives you timely updates without mistaking an estimate for a promise.

Should I trust the date shown on a Steam Coming Soon page?
Treat it as the latest date displayed by the store, then compare it with the newest developer or publisher announcement. If the announcement is newer or less precise, use that later wording until the listing is updated.
Does wishlisting guarantee that I will know about every delay?
No. Steam documents a release email for wishlist holders when the game releases. For delays and roadmap changes, follow the developer or publisher’s dated announcement feed as well.
