The reliable way to find a Universes Beyond card is to work in this order: choose the format, write down your deck’s role and color constraints, search by rules and attributes, verify the exact card’s legality, compare printings, and calculate the complete checkout cost. Search tools can find candidates, but they cannot prove that a card improves your deck or that a displayed price is still available.
What you are actually choosing
“A card” and “a product” are not the same buying decision. A Universes Beyond product may contain a specific card, a randomized booster, a Commander deck, or supplemental cards with different format rules. Even after you identify the card name, separate printings can differ by set, collector number, language, foil treatment, condition, and price.
That distinction matters because a search result can be strategically suitable but illegal in your format, legal but outside your color identity, or inexpensive until shipping and tax are added. Start with the deck and format, not with a character or set you happen to recognize.

Magic has exceeded 25,000 unique cards over its history, according to Wizards of the Coast’s August 13, 2021 Companion announcement. That figure is historical rather than a current card count, but it explains why structured filters are more useful than browsing an entire crossover set.

For release information, use the official MTG Set Archive. It can tell you what a product is and when it was released; it does not replace checking an individual card’s current legality or a seller’s current listing.
Step 1: Define the deck constraints before searching
Write a short constraint sheet. It prevents an attractive result from sending you in the wrong direction.
- Format: Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Commander, or another format you actually play.
- Deck identity: Your colors, Commander color identity if applicable, deck size, and any restrictions from your local event.
- Role: Removal, card draw, ramp, creature, finisher, protection, mana source, sideboard answer, or a particular combo component.
- Mana requirements: Maximum mana value, colored-pip requirements, and whether the card must be useful early, late, or at both stages.
- Theme or mechanic: A tribe, artifact count, graveyard plan, sacrifice theme, historic card type, or another interaction your list already supports.
- Budget ceiling: Set a total amount for the card and a separate allowance for shipping and tax. If you need several copies, multiply the ceiling before searching.
- Presentation preferences: Regular or foil, language, border treatment, and acceptable condition.
These are decision rules, not guarantees that a search result will strengthen the deck. They simply make the search reproducible and stop price from becoming the only criterion.
Step 2: Choose the right search route
Official Wizards Companion database
Wizards describes Companion as an official card-search option. Its August 13, 2021 announcement documented an advanced search with fields for card name, rules text, card type, color, mana value, format, expansion, and rarity: Companion: Card Database Launches Early Access. The announcement called the service early access, so labels and navigation may have changed. Treat the documented fields as a guide and confirm what the current interface actually offers.
Use the format and expansion fields first when you want Universes Beyond cards, then narrow by color, type, mana value, and rules text. Searching rules text is useful when the deck needs an effect rather than a particular character. For example, you can look for text that grants card draw, creates a token, destroys a permanent, or checks a chosen creature type, then inspect the resulting cards for cost and fit.
Third-party card search
A page at scryfall.my describes combined searches for card attributes, formats, sets, legality, and price, along with individual pages showing printing information. It is a third-party page, not proof of an official Wizards interface or domain. Use it to discover candidates and compare versions, but confirm important rules and legality with Wizards.
Search tools narrow a pool; they do not evaluate your curve, metagame, mana base, or play pattern. Open the full card text and ask whether the effect advances your plan, whether you can cast it reliably, and whether another card already performs the role more efficiently.
Set and product archive
The Wizards card-set archive is the best starting point when you know the crossover property or product but not the card. Use it to identify the relevant set, release date, and product type, then return to a card database for individual-card searches.
Step 3: Understand Universes Beyond legality by release date and product
Do not assume that every Universes Beyond card follows one universal rule. Wizards’ October 25, 2024 announcement says that new Universes Beyond booster sets released from 2025 onward would be legal in all major Constructed formats, like ordinary Magic sets. The announcement preserves the existing legality of earlier releases, including The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth and Assassin’s Creed, rather than changing them retroactively. Read the full policy at Aligning the Universes: Making All Our Sets Legal in All Our Formats.

“So, starting in 2025, new Universes Beyond booster sets will be legal in all Constructed formats, just like what you’d consider ‘normal’ Magic sets like Bloomburrow.”

The same announcement warns that some Commander products, supplemental content, and cards such as Special Guests may not share the legality of a main booster set. A product’s marketing name is therefore not enough: check the exact card and the exact format.
The announcement also described a Standard plan with no rotation in 2026 and a shift to rotation with the first set of the calendar year beginning in 2027. Those are time-sensitive policy statements. If you are building or entering a Standard event, verify the current rotation and banned-and-restricted information on Wizards’ current pages immediately before playing; later announcements can supersede a 2024 plan.
Step 4: Verify legality before comparing prices
Do this check while a card is still only a candidate. It is wasteful to compare listings for a card you cannot register.
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Format | The card is legal in the intended format today. | A card can be legal in one format and unavailable in another. |
| Product status | Whether it came from a booster set, Commander product, or supplemental release. | Products and Special Guests can have narrower legality than a main set. |
| Exact printing | Set, collector number, and any special treatment. | Two printings can display different legality or set information in a database. |
| Deck identity | Color and Commander color-identity requirements. | A card can be format-legal but illegal in your particular Commander deck. |
| Restrictions | Current banned or restricted status and event-specific rules. | Format policy changes over time and local events may add constraints. |
Use an official Wizards source for the final rules decision. A third-party legality badge is a convenient cross-check, not a substitute for current policy. Recheck after a major set release, a ban announcement, or a change to your event’s rules.
Step 5: Search by the job the card must perform
Once legality is clear, search for function rather than flavor alone.
Start with card type and color
Apply the deck’s colors and the needed card type first. A Commander deck should use its Commander’s color identity; a 60-card deck should respect its mana base and sideboard plan. Filtering by color and type quickly removes cards that can never enter the list.
Add rules text
Use a rules-text search for the effect you need: drawing cards, destroying an artifact, creating a token, returning a permanent, changing a creature’s power, or rewarding a mechanic. Search several related terms because wording can differ between cards. Read the complete oracle text on the card page before deciding that two results are interchangeable.

Set a mana-value range
Choose a range that fits your curve rather than simply selecting the cheapest spell. A high-impact card that cannot be cast on time may be worse for your deck than a less spectacular card that works on turn two or three. In Commander, also consider how often the card remains useful in a multiplayer game.

Expansion narrows the search to Universes Beyond releases. Rarity can help when you want a common or uncommon for a lower-cost build, but rarity is not a reliable proxy for power, availability, or current price. Treat it as a search constraint, not a quality score.
Step 6: Compare the card with the deck, not just the search result
For every candidate, answer these questions before opening a marketplace listing:
- Does the card advance the deck’s primary plan, or is it merely on-theme?
- Can the mana base produce its colors when you need it?
- Does it duplicate an effect already present, and is the redundancy valuable?
- What happens when the card is drawn late, drawn without support, or answered immediately?
- Does it compete with a more important spell at the same mana value?
- In Commander, does it help the table plan without violating color identity or deck-construction rules?
- For a sideboard card, is the intended matchup or local metagame actually present?
Databases cannot answer these strategic questions. Goldfish hands, games with friends, or sanctioned testing can reveal whether the card performs, but do not confuse a database match with a proven upgrade.
Step 7: Treat every printing as a separate shopping choice
After selecting a card name, open its printing-level information. The Scryfall-related page describes fields such as set, collector number, language, foil availability, and estimated marketplace prices. Check those details against the seller’s page before paying.
| Printing detail | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Set and collector number | Is this the exact release and number you intended? |
| Language | Will the language be accepted by your group, and can you read the rules text comfortably? |
| Foil treatment | Are you paying for foil because you want it, or because the filter selected it by accident? |
| Condition | Does the seller describe the card as near mint, lightly played, or another grade, and does that match your tolerance? |
| Version or border | Is the artwork, frame, promo treatment, or showcase version important to you? |
| Availability | Is the listing still in stock at checkout, rather than merely indexed by a search page? |
A displayed marketplace estimate is a snapshot, not a guaranteed offer. The available evidence does not establish a live retailer price, stock level, card condition, shipping charge, or tax. Confirm all of those on the actual listing and calculate the total before deciding that a card fits your budget.
Step 8: Build a real budget instead of trusting a price filter
Use a price filter to discover candidates under a target, then calculate the purchase total yourself:
Total cost = card price × quantity + shipping + tax + any marketplace or payment fees.
If you need four copies, a price that looks acceptable for one card may exceed the ceiling when multiplied. If you need one Commander copy, shipping can be a larger share of the final amount. Set a maximum total, not just a maximum per-card figure, and leave room for price movement between searching and checkout.

Price filters are discovery aids. They do not reserve inventory, guarantee the displayed currency, or account for condition and delivery charges. Because no live listing was verified here, there is no defensible current “best price” or universal budget threshold to quote.
Step 9: Choose singles or sealed product deliberately
When you know the card you need
Comparing the exact card and its available listings is the more targeted route when the deck requires a particular effect or playset. That is a practical consequence of the goal: you are paying for a known card rather than accepting whatever a randomized product contains. It is not proof that singles will always be cheaper.
When you want discovery or a collection
Sealed Universes Beyond products can make sense when opening packs is part of the entertainment, when you want cards from a whole release, or when you are drafting a product with friends. A booster cannot promise a specific card. The available product information does not establish pull odds or prove that sealed product costs less than buying targeted singles, so do not build a strict deck budget around an assumed pull.
When the product is supplemental
Commander decks and other supplemental products deserve an additional legality check. A card’s presence in a recognizable Universes Beyond product does not automatically give it the same format access as a 2025-or-later booster set.
A repeatable search procedure
- Write the constraint sheet. Record format, colors or Commander identity, role, mana-value range, theme, copy count, and total budget.
- Open an official search route. In Companion, use the current advanced-search controls if available; begin with format and expansion.
- Search by function. Add card type, color, mana value, and rules-text terms that describe the effect.
- Create a shortlist. Keep several candidates instead of choosing the first character or artwork you recognize.
- Read full card text. Check targeting, timing, costs, restrictions, and any conditions that the short search result hides.
- Verify legality. Confirm the exact card and product for the intended format through current Wizards information.
- Evaluate deck fit. Test the card against your curve, mana base, plan, redundancy, and expected opponents.
- Compare printings. Check set, collector number, language, foil status, condition, and version.
- Calculate the total. Multiply by quantity and add shipping, tax, and fees.
- Recheck at checkout. Confirm that the listing, condition, stock, currency, and total have not changed.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming all Universes Beyond sets share one legality rule
Symptom: You find a card in a crossover product and assume it is legal everywhere.
Correction: Separate 2025-and-later booster-set policy from earlier releases and supplemental products. Check the exact card and format.
Using a historical interface description as a current guarantee
Symptom: A button or filter from the 2021 Companion announcement is missing or labeled differently.
Correction: Treat the announcement as documentation of the search fields Wizards described, then follow the controls in the current application and verify results independently.

Symptom: The listing shows the right card name but the wrong set, language, foil treatment, or condition.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Correction: Match collector number and version, then inspect the seller’s description before paying.
Calling a displayed estimate a budget price
Symptom: The card appears under your limit in a search result but exceeds it in the cart.
Correction: Add quantity, shipping, tax, and fees and recheck the total immediately before checkout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBuying boosters for a card you must have
Symptom: You spend the budget on randomized product and still lack the required card.
Correction: Compare targeted listings for the exact card first. Buy sealed product only when uncertainty and opening it are part of your goal.
Confusing theme with deck performance
Symptom: A flavorful card displaces a cheaper or more reliable spell that performs the same role.
Correction: Compare mana requirements, timing, redundancy, and real games rather than choosing on character recognition alone.

Decision examples without guessing a card
Commander theme deck
Begin with the Commander’s color identity, the deck’s central mechanic, and a role such as creature payoff or graveyard interaction. Filter by those constraints, then reject cards that require colors outside the identity. Compare multiplayer usefulness and repeatability before comparing versions.
Budget 60-card deck
Set a per-copy and total-playset ceiling. Search for the required role within the deck’s mana curve, then compare regular printings before premium treatments. Verify that the card is legal in the intended constructed format, especially if the product is an older or supplemental release.
Collector-focused purchase
Legality may be less important if the card is for a collection, but the printing details become central. Match set, collector number, language, foil treatment, border, and condition, and account for storage or shipping costs in the total.
Strict event deadline
Prioritize a currently available, legal printing over a preferred treatment that may be out of stock. Confirm delivery time and condition on the seller’s page; a search estimate cannot guarantee arrival before the event.
Quick Recap
What to recheck before submitting a deck
- The format and current banned or restricted list are still the ones used by your event.
- The exact Universes Beyond product does not have narrower legality than the main booster set you were considering.
- Your Commander color identity, copy count, and deck-size rules are satisfied.
- The printing in your cart matches the card name, set, collector number, language, foil status, and condition you selected.
- The total after shipping, tax, and fees remains below your ceiling.
- You are not relying on an assumed booster pull, an old price snapshot, or a historical rotation statement.
