To estimate a Pokémon card’s value, identify the exact card and printing, then compare recent completed sales for copies with the same variant, language, condition, and grade. The result is an evidence-based range, not a guaranteed price: eBay notes that actual prices vary with condition, timing, demand, and other market factors.
A card name by itself is not enough. Set, collector number, finish, language, condition, and (for graded cards) the grading company and grade can all change which sales are valid comparisons.
Why a card name alone cannot establish value
Several Pokémon cards can share a character name while differing in set, collector number, rarity, artwork, foil treatment, language, or promotional status. Those differences can put otherwise similar-looking cards in entirely different markets. Start by treating identification as a separate task from pricing.

Use the card’s printed information and physical appearance to create an identity record. Only after that record is complete should you search sale data. This prevents a common error: using the highest listing for a similarly named card as if it were evidence for the card in your hand.

Step 1: Record the card’s exact identity
Write down the name and collector number
Record the Pokémon or Trainer name exactly as printed. Then copy the collector number, usually shown in a format such as XXX/YYY. The number is often the fastest way to separate cards with the same name across different sets.
Look for the number near the bottom edge of the card, usually beside the set symbol or rarity information. Transcribe every digit and letter; a single error can return a different card in a marketplace search.
Identify the set
Note the set name or set symbol, release era if known, and any other visible printing mark. A name and number combination is much stronger than a name alone, but you should still confirm that the artwork and layout match the suspected set.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe official Pokémon Card-Dex illustrates why these fields should be kept separate. In its historical Black & White entries, Snivy appears as 1/114 with rarity C. That notation is useful for understanding an older set, but it is not a universal layout guide for every later expansion.
Record language and special markings
Write down the card’s language because prices can differ between language markets. Also record visible marks such as PROMO, a stamped event or product logo, a first-edition-style mark where applicable, or other text that distinguishes the printing.
Take clear front and back photographs before searching. A photo preserves details you might otherwise overlook and lets you compare artwork, symbols, borders, and numbering with reference entries.
Step 2: Distinguish the physical variant
Standard, holo, and reverse holo
Inspect the foil pattern rather than relying only on the card name and number. A standard card may have no foil; a holo version commonly has foil on the illustration area; a reverse holo commonly has foil across the card background while the illustration treatment differs.
TCGplayer’s rarity guidance explains that reverse holo changes appearance but does not change the card’s rarity or collector number. Consequently, two cards with the same number can still require different sales comparisons when their finishes differ.

Promos and alternate artwork
Promo cards may carry a PROMO marking instead of fitting the normal set-number pattern. Alternate-art, special-art, and other premium printings should be identified by their distinctive artwork and numbering, not inferred from a character name.
When a card has a special finish or artwork, search using all of the identifying terms together. For example, combine the name, set, collector number, and a precise finish term rather than searching only for the Pokémon’s name.
Build a comparison record
Before looking at prices, put the details in a short record:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Card or Trainer name
- Set and collector number
- Language
- Standard, holo, reverse holo, promo, alternate-art, or other printing
- Raw condition, or grading company and grade for a slabbed card
- Single card or part of a bundle
This record becomes the filter for every comparable sale you consider.
Step 3: Assess condition honestly
Inspect the front and back
Use bright, indirect light and handle the card by its edges. Check for bends, creases, dents, scratches, scuffs, whitening on corners or edges, surface wear, stains, and print defects. Examine the back as carefully as the front; edge whitening and corner damage are often easier to see there.
Do not clean, flatten, or alter a card to make it appear newer. Those actions can create additional damage and may affect how a grading company evaluates it.
Separate raw from graded comparisons
A raw card is an ungraded card. A slabbed card has been encapsulated and assigned a grade by a grading company. Compare raw cards only with raw sales in similar condition. For a graded card, match both the grading company and the grade whenever possible.
A sale for a high-grade slab is not a valid benchmark for a visibly worn raw card. Likewise, a heavily played copy should not be used to price a near-mint copy without adjusting the conclusion.

Whether used at home, in a hobby shop or at a breaker station, the bulk card sleeves keep supplies ready for everyday use and help make card handling, packaging and collection management more efficient.
Describe condition rather than promising a grade
If you are not a professional grader, describe what you can see instead of predicting a guaranteed grade. Use specific observations such as “small whitening on two back corners” or “one visible surface scratch” and let comparable raw sales show the market range.
Step 4: Use completed sales, not asking prices
Start with eBay’s completed-sale data
eBay says its Price Guide is built from completed eBay sales. It attempts to match the same card and, when available, the same grade; it also includes accepted Best Offer prices rather than merely the seller’s initial asking amount. The guide provides raw and graded insights, median sold prices, transaction details, and historical sales trends covering up to two years.
The feature updates every 24 hours, so it is a snapshot rather than a live quote. eBay currently states that the Price Guide is available only in the United States. If it is unavailable in your region, use completed-sale records you can access and apply the same matching standards.
Search with the full identity
Enter the name, set, collector number, and variant in the search terms. Add the language when relevant. For a slabbed card, include the grading company and numeric grade. Then open individual sold records and verify that the pictured card matches yours.
Exclude results that are not comparable:
- Different collector numbers or sets
- Standard cards when yours is holo, reverse holo, promo, or alternate-art
- Different languages when language affects the market you intend to use
- Graded cards when yours is raw, or a different grading company or grade
- Bundles, lots, or listings that contain multiple cards
- Listings whose photographs reveal a different condition
Check the transaction details
Record the sale date, sold amount, shipping charge, condition description, and whether the transaction was a single card. A buyer’s total cost can include shipping, and market conditions can change between an older sale and a recent one. Keep the date attached to every figure you record.
Step 5: Turn comparable sales into a realistic range
Use several recent matches
Collect several comparable transactions instead of anchoring on one unusually high or low result. A cluster of sales is more informative than the maximum listing or a single outlier. If only a few exact matches exist, widen the search cautiously and explain which attribute is less closely matched.
For each candidate sale, line up the following fields:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Comparison field | What must match | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Card identity | Name, set, collector number, and artwork | Prevents mixing different printings |
| Language | Same language where possible | Different language markets can produce different results |
| Finish or variant | Standard, holo, reverse holo, promo, alternate-art, or other finish | Appearance and demand can differ even when the number is the same |
| Condition | Similar raw wear, or same grading company and grade | Condition directly affects realized prices |
| Timing | Recent sale date | Demand and supply can change over time |
| Transaction type | Single card rather than a lot or bundle | A bundle price cannot be assigned to one card without reliable allocation |
| Total transaction | Sold amount and shipping considered together | Shipping changes what the buyer actually paid |
Use the pattern, not the highest number
Once mismatches are removed, look at the middle of the comparable results and the spread between lower and higher sales. A narrow cluster supports a tighter estimate. A wide spread signals that condition, timing, listing quality, or buyer demand may be materially different.

State the result as an estimated range tied to the date and comparison set. Do not call it a guaranteed sale price, appraisal, or amount you will take home. A guide or marketplace estimate cannot account for every future offer, fee, or shipping arrangement.
Step 6: Decide whether grading is worthwhile
Price the raw card first
Establish the raw-card range before considering professional grading. This gives you a baseline against which to compare graded sales and prevents the assumption that encapsulation automatically creates profit.
Compare the same grade and company
Use sold examples for the same grading company and grade when available. Different companies and grades are not interchangeable benchmarks. The consulted evidence does not establish any universal grading fee, the grade your card would receive, or a guaranteed increase in value.
Include every cost and risk
To evaluate grading, subtract the complete cost of grading, shipping, insurance, selling fees, and any other transaction expense from a realistic expected sale. Also account for the possibility that the card receives a lower grade than hoped or takes longer to sell. Grading makes sense only when the likely net result and the protection or authentication benefits justify those costs and risks.
Account for what you will actually receive
A sold price is not automatically your take-home amount. Selling fees, shipping, taxes where applicable, and the buyer’s final offer can reduce proceeds. The available evidence does not support one universal net-value formula because these costs depend on the marketplace, location, listing method, and transaction terms.
Keep two figures separate in your notes:
- Market estimate: the range supported by comparable completed sales.
- Expected proceeds: the market estimate minus the specific fees, shipping, and other costs you expect to incur.
This distinction is especially important when deciding whether grading or a lower, faster offer is worthwhile.

Ignoring reverse holo or promo status
A reverse holo can share the same rarity and collector number as another finish while looking different. Promo cards may use a PROMO marking. Treat these as separate variants when selecting comps.
Comparing a raw card with a slab
Filter raw and graded results separately. For slabs, match the grading company and grade; for raw cards, match visible wear.
Using a bundle price as a single-card value
Remove lots and bundles unless the listing clearly identifies an individual price supported by comparable transactions. Otherwise, the total cannot reliably be assigned to one card.

Record the sale date and favor recent matches. eBay cautions that its data can lag real time and that condition, timing, demand, and other market factors affect actual prices.
A repeatable worksheet
Copy this checklist for each card:
- Write the exact name, set, collector number, language, and visible markings.
- Classify the finish: standard, holo, reverse holo, promo, alternate-art, or another printing.
- Photograph the front and back and record every bend, crease, dent, scratch, whitening spot, and surface defect.
- Mark the card as raw, or record the grading company and grade shown on its slab.
- Search completed sales using the full identity record.
- Remove mismatched sets, numbers, finishes, languages, conditions, grades, bundles, and lots.
- Record several remaining sales with dates, sold amounts, shipping, and transaction details.
- Use the resulting cluster to state a dated estimated range.
- Subtract your specific selling and shipping costs to estimate proceeds.
- Only then compare the raw baseline with same-company, same-grade sales to decide whether grading is sensible.
Handling and storing the card while you research
Because condition affects price, handle the card carefully while inspecting and photographing it. A protective trading-card sleeve can help preserve the card’s current condition during storage and shipping. It does not raise the card’s market value by itself, and no particular brand or exact size is required by the valuation method.
What a defensible answer looks like
A well-supported valuation identifies the card precisely, names the variant and condition, cites a group of comparable completed sales, and states the date and limitations of the estimate. It does not promise that the card will sell at the highest observed price or that a guide’s median will become your net proceeds.
If exact matches are scarce, say so and explain the compromise—for example, that the estimate uses the same card and finish but fewer recent transactions, or that language or grade could not be matched perfectly. Clear limits are more useful than false precision.
