The most reliable way to choose shoes online is to measure both feet, use the size chart for the exact brand and model, check width and fit notes, and make sure the larger foot is accommodated. A size you wear in another shoe is only a starting point: brands and styles can use different shapes, widths and internal volumes. Check the seller’s current return conditions before you place the order.
What you need before ordering
Gather a sheet of paper, a pencil, a ruler or tape measure, and the socks you expect to wear with the shoes. You need the product page for the exact model, including its regional size system, measurement units, width choices and fit notes. Keep the seller’s return page open as well; a return window, wear restriction or shipping charge can determine whether ordering two sizes is practical.
- Measure both feet rather than relying on an old shoe size.
- Record the measurement in the units used by the model’s chart, commonly millimeters, centimeters or inches.
- Use the longest toe on each foot. It may not be the big toe.
- Use the larger foot when selecting length and width.
- Read model-specific fit comments instead of assuming every shoe is “true to size.”
Have the product page open while you measure, not just a general brand homepage. Some retailers place a chart at brand level and a separate fit note on the individual model. The model page is the better reference when the two appear to differ. Note whether the chart describes foot length, an insole measurement, or a finished-shoe measurement; use the definition the seller provides rather than treating all numbers as interchangeable.
Measure your feet at home, step by step
Official sizing guides from Vans and Timberland use a simple wall-and-paper method. Repeat the complete process for the left and right foot.

1. Set up a straight reference
- Place one edge of the paper against a wall or another straight vertical edge.
- Put the paper on a hard, flat floor. Carpet can compress and change the result.
- Wear the socks intended for the shoe, if the shoe will normally be worn with socks.
Keep the paper from sliding and keep the wall edge straight. If you cannot place your heel directly against a wall, use another rigid reference and make sure the starting edge is square to the paper. The goal is a repeatable heel reference, not a particular brand of paper or ruler.
2. Position one foot
- Stand with your heel touching the wall or straight reference.
- Keep your weight distributed naturally rather than pulling the toes back.
- Have another person help if possible so you remain upright while the foot is marked.
Use the same posture for both feet. Do not compare one measurement taken seated with another taken standing unless the product instructions specifically call for that method. A helper can hold the pencil and check that it stays vertical while you stand normally.
3. Mark the longest toe
Mark the end of the longest toe, not automatically the big toe. The Vans guide specifically cautions that the longest toe can be a different toe. Keep the pencil vertical so the mark does not lean beyond the toe.

Look at each foot separately. The longest toe can differ from one foot to the other, so do not copy the first foot’s mark onto the second. Make a small, clear mark that you can measure without guessing where the toe ended.
4. Measure heel to mark
Measure in a straight line from the wall-side edge of the paper to the toe mark. Record the result in millimeters if the chart requests millimeters; do not round it into a different unit until you have checked the chart’s instructions.
Write down the left and right results separately, including the units. If the chart uses centimeters and your ruler shows millimeters, convert carefully and consistently. Do not select a size by rounding toward the smaller entry simply because it looks closer; first read how that brand tells shoppers to handle measurements between sizes.
5. Repeat for the other foot
Measure the other foot under the same conditions. Differences between feet are common enough that sizing from only one foot can leave the larger foot cramped. Keep both measurements, and note any difference in width or shape that you can see or feel.

The longer measurement normally sets the minimum length for the pair, but width can also determine the suitable choice. If one foot is noticeably wider, record that separately rather than assuming a longer size will solve it.
When to measure
FootJoy’s measuring guidance recommends measuring toward the end of the day. Its fitting material also discusses sitting for that fitting. Treat this as FootJoy’s recommendation, not a universal rule for every at-home method; the important point is to use the same conditions for both feet and follow the instructions on the product’s own size page.
Use the exact product chart, not a generic conversion
Enter the larger foot’s measured length into the chart attached to the shoe or brand. Start with the chart’s stated regional system—such as US, UK or EU—and its stated units. A generic conversion table can produce a different result because brands do not all build a model from the same measurements.

Danner says its footwear uses US sizing based on the Brannock Device, while also warning that sizing can vary among styles. The Vans size guide likewise notes that size varies by brand or style. Those warnings mean a number from another pair is not a guarantee for the new model.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How to read a chart when you are between sizes
- First check whether the chart maps your measured length to a specific size or to a range.
- Check whether the model is offered in half sizes or alternate widths before choosing a longer size.
- Read “How it fits,” “fit,” or equivalent notes on the model page; these notes can override a broad brand-level expectation.
- If your measurement falls between entries, use the seller’s stated recommendation and the return policy rather than inventing a conversion.
Do not treat US, UK, EU and centimeter values as interchangeable unless the same chart explicitly connects them. A conversion is an estimate; the model’s own chart is the relevant reference.
Distinguish foot length from shoe dimensions
A chart may be labeled by the foot length it is intended to fit, while another page may show an insole or product dimension. Those labels describe different things. Follow the chart’s own heading and any accompanying instructions. If the page does not explain what a number represents, contact the seller before ordering instead of comparing it directly with a measurement from a different chart.
Length is only one part of fit
A heel-to-toe measurement tells you length, but not whether the shoe has enough room across the forefoot, over the instep or around the heel. It also does not tell you whether the shoe’s flex point lines up with the ball of your foot.
Width and overall volume
Check the model’s width choices. If one foot is wider than the other, a longer size may add unwanted length without providing the right forefoot width. A shoe can have the correct nominal length and still feel tight at the sides or over the top of the foot. Choose an alternate width when the model offers one and the chart or fit notes indicate that it matches your measurement.
Overall volume includes the space above the foot as well as the space across it. A low-volume shoe can press on the instep even when the toe has room; a roomy style can allow movement even when the length is correct. Product descriptions, width labels and model-specific fit comments are the available online clues. Do not infer volume from the size number alone.
Heel-to-toe length versus arch length
The Genuine Brannock Device measures heel-to-toe length, arch (heel-to-ball) length and width. Its instructions explain how to compare heel-to-toe and arch readings and determine width. FootJoy also advises considering both measurements because the ball of the foot should align with the shoe’s flex point.
This matters when a shoe feels the wrong length even though your toes have room. If the ball of your foot sits ahead of the shoe’s intended flex point, the model may not suit your arch length or shape. Home paper measurements normally do not provide an arch-length reading, so use a store’s measuring device or a fitting service when this is a recurring problem.
Fit the larger foot and account for asymmetry
The Brannock instructions say to fit the larger foot, and Rockport’s size and fit notes give the same general advice. Compare both feet’s length and width, then select a size and width that do not compress the larger one.
If the feet differ in length
Use the larger foot’s chart result for the pair. If the difference is substantial, look for a model with a secure heel and a width option rather than simply adding length. A removable insole or professionally fitted insert may help in some shoes, but the seller’s construction and return terms determine whether such changes are practical.

Do not assume that buying two different sizes is allowed. Some sellers require a matched pair for a return, and an exchange may be processed differently from a refund. Check those terms before placing an order if the difference between your feet makes a single size uncertain.
If the feet differ in width
Look for alternate widths first. Lengthening the shoe does not automatically create the correct shape across the forefoot. If the model has only one width, compare its fit notes and internal shape with your wider foot and be prepared to use the return process if the sides feel compressed.
If the shoe feels loose on the smaller foot
Do not downsize if doing so restricts the larger foot. Instead, follow the manufacturer’s guidance about lacing or fit adjustments, provided they do not create pressure points. Keep the shoes indoors while checking fit when the seller requires returned shoes to be unworn.

Fit guidance is often model-specific. Crocs says most of its shoes have a roomy fit; that statement applies to its own range and is not a rule for other footwear. Danner warns that sizing varies by style. A running shoe, leather dress shoe, boot and sandal can therefore require different choices even for the same measured foot.
Read comments for the exact colorway or construction when the retailer separates them. A boot with a substantial lining, a sandal with adjustable straps and a low-profile shoe can present different volume and security even at the same nominal size. Treat a brand-level note as context, then give priority to the model page and its available widths.
| What to compare | Why it matters | What to do online |
|---|---|---|
| Measured length | The larger foot sets the minimum usable length. | Match it to the exact model’s chart and units. |
| Width options | Length alone cannot describe forefoot room. | Choose the width listed for the model, if available. |
| Shape and volume | Toe-box, instep and heel dimensions differ by style. | Read the model’s fit notes and photographs carefully. |
| Flex point and arch length | A shoe can have toe room but bend in the wrong place. | Use a professional or Brannock measurement if this is a persistent issue. |
| Return eligibility | A correct measurement cannot predict every finished-shoe fit. | Confirm deadline, condition and shipping terms before checkout. |
Check the return policy before checkout
Return rules vary by seller, region and order. As examples on current US guidance, the Vans and Timberland pages describe a 30-day return period for eligible online purchases, subject to condition requirements. Do not assume another retailer offers the same period, free shipping or exchange terms.
Those examples are US pages, so shoppers elsewhere should open the regional policy connected to their order. Marketplace purchases may also follow the marketplace’s terms instead of the shoe brand’s direct-to-consumer terms. Check the seller shown at checkout and retain the order confirmation.
Record these details
- The last day to start a return, and whether the clock begins at purchase or delivery.
- Whether shoes must be unworn, with the original box, tags and accessories.
- Whether trying them indoors is allowed under the condition rule.
- Who pays return shipping and whether the original shipping charge is refunded.
- Whether an exchange is available or you must place a new order.
Save the product page, chart and policy at the time of purchase. Policies can change, and the terms attached to your order control the return. If a return label has an expiration date or a seller requires an online authorization, note that detail before the parcel arrives.
How to test an online purchase without losing return eligibility
- Try both shoes indoors on a clean floor, using the intended socks.
- Stand and walk normally, checking that toes are not pressed against the end and that the heel is not slipping excessively.
- Check the widest part of each foot for side pressure and the instep for compression.
- Bend your feet and confirm that the shoe flexes near the ball of the foot rather than across the toes or behind the ball.
- Stop and follow the seller’s return instructions if the fit is wrong; do not wear the shoes outdoors when the seller requires them to be unworn.
Compare both shoes, not just the one that feels tighter. A pair can feel different on the left and right because your feet differ. Check the fit while standing and walking, since a seated foot position may not reveal heel movement or pressure when your weight is on the shoe. Remove labels or packaging only after confirming that doing so will not affect eligibility for a return.
Common sizing mistakes and their fixes
Using the size from a different brand
Problem: You order the same number you wear elsewhere. Fix: Re-measure and use the new model’s chart and fit notes. Danner and Vans both caution that sizing can vary by style or brand.

Measuring only the big toe
Problem: The mark is placed at the big toe even though another toe is longer. Fix: Mark whichever toe extends farthest on each foot, as the Vans guide specifies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Problem: The shorter foot determines the order. Fix: Measure both and fit the larger foot, following Brannock and Rockport guidance.
Choosing length to solve a width problem
Problem: You size up because the sides feel tight, creating excess toe length. Fix: Check alternate widths or choose a model whose shape and volume better match your foot.
Assuming a measuring device guarantees comfort
Problem: You treat a device reading as a final answer. Fix: Use the reading as a starting point, then check the model’s construction and try the shoes under the seller’s return conditions.
Ignoring the unit or region on the chart
Problem: You read a US number as though it were a UK or EU number, or compare millimeters with inches without converting. Fix: Start with the chart’s regional label and units, and use only the conversions that the same chart supplies.
Testing outdoors before deciding
Problem: You walk outside to test traction and then discover the seller requires unworn footwear for a return. Fix: Complete the initial fit check indoors and read the condition rule before wearing the shoes beyond the home.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using a Brannock Device
A Genuine Brannock Device is an optional physical tool that measures heel-to-toe length, arch length and width. It can be useful in a shoe store, especially when your arch length and width do not agree with your heel-to-toe result. The manufacturer’s instructions state: “When used properly, the Genuine Brannock Device® foot measurer is designed to indicate the correct shoe size.” The same instructions explain that measurement is the first step and that manufacturing and style differences can require fitting adjustments.
Rockport likewise describes Brannock and additional forefoot measurements as a starting point. Manufacturers do not all begin a model from the same measurements, so a device reading does not guarantee finished-shoe comfort. If you use one, measure each foot, compare heel-to-toe and arch readings, determine width, and still verify the online model’s chart and return policy.
A device is most useful when you need information that a paper outline cannot provide, especially arch length or a width reading. It is not a reason to skip the model chart. Record the readings, identify which foot is larger, and use them to ask a retailer a more precise question about the shoe’s width or flex point.

Questions to ask before you click Buy
- Does this page show the chart for the exact model, or only a general brand chart?
- Are the numbers foot-length measurements, and are they in the units I recorded?
- Is the longest toe on each foot reflected in my measurement?
- Does the shoe come in the width the larger foot needs?
- Does the model have a roomy, narrow or otherwise specific fit note?
- Will the shoe be worn with socks, and did I measure with comparable socks?
- Can I try it indoors and still return it?
- What is the regional return deadline, condition requirement and shipping cost?
If the page does not answer a question about sizing, width or returns, ask the seller before ordering. A clear answer is more useful than relying on a conversion chart from another retailer.

- Open the exact model’s size chart, regional system and fit notes.
- Compare width options, toe-box shape, instep volume and any style-specific sizing warning.
- Select the size and width that accommodate the larger foot without using a generic conversion as the final authority.
- Read the seller’s return deadline, condition, exchange and shipping rules for your region.
- Try the shoes indoors and act within the stated return process if the fit is not right.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure my foot for online shoe shopping?
Place paper against a wall, stand with your heel at the reference, mark the longest toe, and measure straight from the wall to the mark. Repeat for both feet under the same conditions, then use the larger result with the exact model’s chart.
Should I size up if one foot is bigger?
Fit the larger foot, as the Brannock and Rockport guidance recommends. Check whether the model offers half sizes or alternate widths before simply adding length. A longer shoe does not automatically solve a width difference.
Is my usual size reliable when ordering another brand?
It is only a starting estimate. Danner and Vans both note that sizing can vary by style or brand. Re-measure and follow the chart and fit notes for the specific model you want.
What if my measurement falls between two sizes?
Read the model’s instructions, check for half sizes and widths, and follow the seller’s stated recommendation. Confirm the return deadline and condition before ordering rather than relying on a generic conversion rule.
Does foot length tell me what width to buy?
No. Heel-to-toe length does not describe forefoot width, instep volume, heel shape or arch length. Check width options and model-specific fit notes; a Brannock measurement can add width and arch information.
Can I use a Brannock Device to guarantee an online fit?
No. It measures heel-to-toe length, arch length and width and is a useful starting point. Its instructions and Rockport’s guidance note that manufacturing and style differences can still require fitting adjustments.
When should I measure my feet?
FootJoy recommends measuring toward the end of the day and discusses sitting for its fitting guidance. Treat that as FootJoy’s recommendation, not a universal rule. Consistent conditions for both feet and the product page’s instructions matter most.

The Bottom Line
Measure both feet, fit the larger one, and let the exact shoe model’s chart, width options and fit notes—not a familiar size number—guide the order. A return policy is your final safeguard because measurements cannot capture every difference in shoe shape and construction.
