The lowest hotel price is the lowest like-for-like final stay total—not the cheapest nightly number in a search result. Compare the same room, occupancy, cancellation deadline, payment timing, taxes, mandatory fees and currency on the hotel’s own website and at least one reputable online travel agency (OTA). Then continue to each channel’s final booking page, because that is where a live rate and every required charge are confirmed.
What “cheapest hotel” should mean
A hotel offer is a bundle of price and conditions. Two listings can show the same property and dates but sell different products. One may be refundable until 6 p.m. on the day before arrival; another may require payment now and allow no changes. A room with breakfast, a different bed, or a different occupancy is also not an equivalent comparison.
Use the total amount for the entire stay as your primary measure. Include the room charge, taxes, mandatory resort or destination fees, city charges, service fees, pay-at-property amounts and any required facility or transport charge. If a charge is collected at the hotel rather than online, include it in your own comparison even when a search page displays it separately.
Prices are live inventory. A rate can change between the first search and checkout, so the final booking page controls. Save the final amount and conditions before you pay.

Why the same hotel has different prices
Fees are displayed at different stages
One channel may show only the base room rate, while another includes taxes and mandatory resort fees in the first result. Separating a mandatory resort fee from the room price until late in the process increases the effort and cognitive cost of comparing offers. The Federal Trade Commission’s economic analysis of hotel resort fees discusses this problem.
Google’s Hotel Center policy says mandatory charges collected by the booking partner or the hotel must be represented, and its accuracy policy requires the partner booking page total to match the amount shown in Google. Display timing can still differ, so verify the checkout total yourself.
The cancellation and payment contracts are different
Refundable, nonrefundable, pay-now and pay-at-property rates are separate products. A nonrefundable offer can look dramatically cheaper because you are accepting the risk of losing the payment if plans change. A refundable rate may authorize a card now but charge later, or may require a deposit.

Hotels and OTAs can show lower prices to loyalty members, mobile-app users, email subscribers, corporate accounts or other closed groups. UK government guidance recognizes that hotels may offer lower prices through offline or private channels even when public OTA pricing is constrained. Check the hotel’s member sign-in, email offer, phone desk and other legitimate private channels if you qualify.
The room details do not match
“Same hotel” does not prove “same room.” Compare bed type, maximum occupancy, smoking status, view, accessible features, breakfast, included benefits and the exact cancellation deadline. A cheaper listing may be a smaller room, a sofa bed, a room without breakfast or a rate for fewer guests.

Currency, location and local charges vary
Taxes and city charges depend on the property’s jurisdiction. A site may display your home currency while the hotel charges in local currency. Check whether conversion is performed by the booking site, your card issuer or the property, and whether a local charge is payable on arrival.
Inventory changes while you shop
Hotel rooms are sold in real time. Another guest can take the last room at a rate, or the property can close a rate plan. Treat a search result as an offer to investigate, not a guaranteed price.

1. Define the exact stay
- Enter the property, check-in and check-out dates, number of rooms and every guest, including children where the site requests ages.
- Note the currency you want to use and whether you need breakfast, parking, an accessible room, a particular bed or a specific view.
- Decide how much flexibility you need. Mark the latest cancellation time you can accept before comparing prices.
Changing occupancy or dates after you start comparing invalidates the result. Keep a written note of the search inputs.
2. Start with metasearch to locate the market
Search the exact property and dates in a metasearch tool such as Google Hotels. For every promising result, record the room name, bed, occupancy, breakfast or other inclusions, cancellation deadline, payment timing and displayed currency. Metasearch is useful for discovering channels, but it is not the final authority on what you will pay.
3. Open the official hotel website
Follow the result to the property’s official booking engine and repeat the search with identical dates and occupancy. Check for a member, loyalty, email, phone or other private rate. A direct price may include benefits that are not obvious in the headline, such as a better cancellation rule or a different payment schedule.

4. Check at least one reputable OTA
Open an OTA listing for the same property and room conditions. Do not compare a nonrefundable OTA room with a refundable direct room, or a two-person room with a one-person room. Record the supplier shown at checkout and who will handle changes or a failed reservation.

Use a “total,” “all-in” or equivalent display when the channel offers one. Google says taxes and fees must be complete and correctly represented, including mandatory charges collected by the hotel. If a fee is described as payable at the property, add it to your worksheet rather than treating the online subtotal as the final cost.
6. Advance to each final booking page
Enter the required guest and payment details far enough to reveal the final amount, but do not submit payment until you have compared the pages. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2025 guidance for short-term lodging says:
“A business must calculate, then clearly, conspicuously, and prominently disclose the final amount of payment, including taxes, shipping, and optional add-ons, before asking people to pay.”

Check the total, currency, deposit, payment date, cancellation wording and any amount due at arrival. A booking page that cannot explain a mandatory charge is not ready for a fair comparison.
7. Build a like-for-like comparison

Only after every row matches should you choose the lower total. If one value is unknown, treat the offers as not yet comparable rather than assuming it is zero.
8. Preserve evidence
Save a screenshot or PDF of the final price, room description, cancellation deadline, payment schedule and fee explanation. Keep the confirmation email and reservation number. This record helps if the amount changes, a fee is disputed or the property cannot find the reservation.

Check whether it is nonrefundable
Look for “nonrefundable,” “no changes,” “pay now” or a similar label. Confirm whether cancellation loses the full amount or only a deposit. Compare the saving with the value of flexibility, not with a different refundable rate.
Look for occupancy and bed restrictions
Some pages default to one adult even when you need two adults and a child. Re-run the search with the real guests. Confirm that the listed bed arrangement and maximum occupancy are acceptable before treating the price as valid.

Separate online payment from hotel collection
A page may charge the room now but leave a city tax, resort fee or security deposit for the property. Record both amounts and when each is due. A “pay at property” label does not make a mandatory charge optional.
Confirm the currency and conversion method
Read the wording beside the total: it may identify an approximate conversion, a local-currency charge or a card-company conversion. Use the amount and currency that will actually be charged when comparing channels.
Direct booking versus an OTA
There is no universal winner. A direct site can be cheaper through a member or private rate, while an OTA can expose an otherwise unavailable room or a different promotion. The correct choice is the channel with the lower like-for-like total and acceptable terms.

When prices are close, compare non-price value before deciding: cancellation flexibility, payment timing, loyalty benefits, included breakfast or parking, and the party responsible for fixing a reservation problem. Do not assign a cash value to points or perks unless you genuinely expect to use them.
When a price changes between search and checkout
- Confirm that dates, occupancy, room type and currency did not reset.
- Check whether the earlier result omitted taxes or mandatory fees.
- Look for a changed cancellation deadline or payment plan.
- Refresh the metasearch result and reopen the partner page.
- Use the final checkout amount for your decision, and save the page if you book.
If the comparison page and partner booking page show different totals for identical conditions, do not assume the lower figure will be honored. Google’s accuracy policy expects the partner page total to match the amount shown in Google; report a clear mismatch through the relevant channel and use the amount actually presented before payment.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
- Comparing nightly prices: switch every site to the full-stay total.
- Ignoring hotel-collected fees: add mandatory resort, destination, city or facility charges to the total.
- Mixing cancellation rules: put the exact deadline beside each price.
- Forgetting occupancy: search with all travelers and their ages where required.
- Assuming “same hotel” means same room: match bed, view, breakfast and room category.
- Overlooking payment timing: note deposits, pay-now terms and amounts due at arrival.
- Accepting a converted total blindly: verify display and charge currencies.
- Failing to document the offer: save the final total and conditions before paying.
A quick decision rule
Choose the offer that satisfies all required room and occupancy details, has an acceptable cancellation and payment contract, and produces the lowest final stay total after mandatory charges. If two offers are equal, prefer the one whose currency, fee explanation and support responsibility are clearest. If a private direct rate beats a public OTA rate, confirm its eligibility and conditions before booking.
What official policies establish
The FTC’s 2025 fee rule guidance states that short-term-lodging sellers must disclose the final amount, including mandatory fees, before asking consumers to pay. Google Hotel Center policy states that taxes and fees must be complete and correctly represented and that mandatory charges collected by a partner or hotel belong in the total. These policies explain why the checkout total—not an early headline—is the figure to rely on. They do not establish a guaranteed percentage of savings for booking direct or through an OTA.
